- Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks with his Mongolian counterpart on 3rd of September, 2014 on a 6 hour work visit. 15 documents were signed during the visit including visa free status for its citizens and plans to modernize and build new track on the railway two countries share was discussed upon other issues. Don't get me wrong, if the choice is between living under the Nazi regime or the Soviet regime, I'll always take the latter, so I'm glad Germany got trounced by the Soviets and the Allies. But let's not forget Russia's ulterior motives here. The Soviet Union was not at war with Germany because the Soviets felt some altruistic need to liberate the people of Europe. They were happy to cooperate with the Nazis while it served their own goals. Sadly, Stalin's old buddy Adolf turned out to be just as much of a backstabbing jerk as he was himself.
Let's *also* not forget that, for most of Eastern Europe, the Soviets really just replaced one dictatorial regime with another.

You have to remember, that he grew up in a very ordinary family. He was NOT a high ranking KGB agent, he was a clerk in Germany during the fall of the Berlin Wall, when he stood before the mob. That wasn't why Yeltsin picked him to supersede him. He was chosen for his cool head under pressure. He probably knows more about the events of the Soviet Era than anyone outside the Kremlin. That he has been given the time to rectify / acknowledge some of that, and the aftermath of the fall, is probably something that weighs heavily on his shoulders. All that and more is what makes him cry with the playing of the national anthem. It is not just simple love for his country, it's people and culture, past and present.
