  • The biggest issue I see with Lumion artists renders that ask for my advice, is the lighting nodes are far too high for interior scenes. Most of the time their renders look far better just by tweaking light values. The default value of 300 is absolutely INSANE. I typically use 1-25 depending on the location of the light, with even 100 being very high.
    If the value of your lights is too high, you have to compensate with effects but that can lead to losing detail.
    The first comparison I did was just to show how the lighting changes, but I realized that where it lined up with the video was kind of confusing. The value in my comparison was 20, where the viewport would have been at 7 during that time.

  • @krukrvavi

    They should just connect values to lumens, it would make whole process easier, and also enable rendering accurate lighting scenarios

    • @LuminousLabs
      @LuminousLabs  2 года назад +1

      I agree, there needs to be some kind of update to the way the values are displayed since it really doesn't make sense. The slider is not linear and I think that really messes with people.
      Thanks for checking out the video!

    This was so helpful man. I have been struggling with the lighting because of this fact and now i understand that they just put some random number as default. and here i was thinking the figure was actual "Lumen" value, I'm a lighting expert but putting it to lumion the program it just didnt make sense. 400 lumens is so low but Lumion "400" it just looks stupidly unnatural.

  • @NedDanielss

    So so so helpful, this really is fundamental lol they should feature this for people starting?? Obviously lack of raytracing limits interiors but I think sooooo many people (myself included) have trouble with interiors purely because they don’t understand these settings. Took me a while to notice how insane the values on the lights are because the slider bar makes it look like they’re relatively low

    • @LuminousLabs
      @LuminousLabs  2 года назад +1

      Exactly! To me it seems like as long as the light source is strong enough to reach the floor that is around where it should be. I do hope they make an “exterior” and “interior” section just so people who are new will have different starting values.
      I don’t completely understand how the values work myself, because it doesn’t seem to be linear. The ies profiles that are built in seem to be quite visible even at the lower values
      I’m glad this video could help you out!

    I always feel like I am turning knobs blindly when it comes to lighting, like Area Light vs Lime Light, vs spot lights, I get lost. And, Yeah, with a default of 300 I always think I'm doing something wrong when I crank it down to 45 in order to get it looking "ok". Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

    I really hope they add the ability to dial in the brightness before placing lights in the scene. Right now you have to add a light, change the brightness then copy that light around. Thanks for the great vid.

    • @dereksisson8393
      @dereksisson8393 2 года назад

      You can add multiple lights first, then adjust the settings of all similar lights at the same time. I am Not at a computer to explain the exact steps, but it is super easy once you know how.

    • @LuminousLabs
      @LuminousLabs  2 года назад +1

      You are correct, however I think Lumion needs to change this. I am confused why it is not possible to link lights. If you have 6 lights in a living room they are 99.99%+ going to all be the exact same light so why can't they just mimic each other.

    • @LuminousLabs

      Hi Geoff!
      I have been playing around with D5. While it is not as polished as some people would have you believe, I think it is better for interiors than Lumion. There are a lot of things that I find can make Lumion turn into a dumpster fire with interiors that D5 has no problem with.
      Overall it seems like a much much faster render as well, but not as many output settings. If you have not heard of Nvidia DLSS I would recommend looking briefly into it. DLSS is a huge feature that is going to be the future of rendering.

    • @geoff2579
      @geoff2579 2 года назад +1

      @@LuminousLabs Thanks Greg! Have just been looking into DLSS, thanks for the heads up. It does sound interesting. I still haven't found the time to experiment with D5 as yet.. I realise it's still being developed but it does look like it's going to give Lumion a run for it's money esp as it continues to add new features. I'm also hoping D5 is fairly easy to learn.. I'll definitely be watching your D5 vids to hear your thoughts.

      I actually think D5 is far easier to learn, a lot of the learning curve from lumion is just built into D5.
      I recommend everyone give it a try, it's never bad to have options!

    • @LuminousLabs

      I actually don't like the GI effect. Hyperlight is actually the new GI effect, but for some reason Lumion wanted to keep the old one in for people who were used to it. The GI effect doesn't deliver the same results as Hyperlight but is WAY more expensive. Hyperlight should have been called GI2.

    Why lumion lights intersect surfaces ? How can we avoid this?

    • @LuminousLabs
      @LuminousLabs  2 года назад

      What I assume is happening is you have an area light or a fill light. These lights don't cast shadows so they will just pass though the geometry unfortunately.
      If you are using fill lights at all, swap it to an omnilight and make sure it is casting shadow.

    Hmm good job researching this actual sphere of influence for a light point. I knwe thatdefault 300 units is way to strong but didn't figure out the light kind of "cuts" after reaching the distance as shown here. I wonder now how much difference would it make to select the lights at small values and make them work with global illumination

    • @LuminousLabs
      @LuminousLabs  2 года назад

      I haven’t played with global illumination effect but hyperlight does seem to work a bit better! At the very end where I turn the lamp up, you can see how much more noise it brings in the scene.
      The sphere of influence is called its attenuation, I just wasnt sure if everyone would know what I meant since that word isn’t anywhere in lumion’s interface.
      Thank you for checking out the video! I hope it helps you out :)

      @@LuminousLabs I think (and hope) we're going to see a major improvement in interior lighting in the next version - it looks to me so from what Lumion devs have shown in the teaser. As for hyperlight - this has always looked kind of random to me, not really a realistic effect, it mimics the color bleeding effect which ray tracing would give. reason why I thought of GI instead was in relation to what you have shown with this sphere of range that a single light point has - perhaps marking a light to work in GI effect could help that?
