How to Properly LIGHT UP Your LUMION Interior Scene with Only Lighting Effects

  • EXTERIOR version out now! • How to Properly LIGHT ...
    This is a video tutorial that is meant to teach Lumion users what (in my opinion) the best way to achieve realistic lighting in the software is. My typical approach is to use the Lumion lighting system very sparingly. While I did use spotlights in this tutorial I used a strong lamp preset with a brightness of 1 (default is 300), with the sole purpose of adding a small amount of lighting to the shelf in the background. I have found the best results for using spotlights in general is to just put them on low so it helps your models have more interesting shadows, and the general lighting of your scene should be done in the Lumion post-production as I did above.
    This video focuses mostly the effects that I find to be the most helpful for setting your scene, and also a few that I don't think should be typically used but thought it might be good to show for educational purposes.
    Note Near the end I say the plant has great "subdivision surface" what I meant to say was "subsurface scatter" in case there is any confusion about it.
    My final render, the lighting effect stack (to use in your own projects), and all of my example photos I used in the video are available here:
    drive.google.com/drive/folder...
    The website for our business can be found at luminouslabs.ca/ , if there are any broken links or any other oddities, we apologize as we are currently in the process of upgrading and rearranging our site, however we have tried to avoid any issues as best as we can.

    nice video! but how do you render photorealistic for a project with no windows? eg inside a mall, store setting where there is no natural sunlight. Thanks!

  • @AWViz
    @AWViz 3 года назад +3

    So I just recently discovered your channel and I want to thank you for producing some very valuable content! With that said...a quick question...the reflection sphere/cube, do you know if that even matters when you add speedray reflections? The impression that I get is that speedray reflections completely negate the need for a reflection sphere...I always thought the spheres were only useful for getting impressions of accurate reflections in model/edit mode. Ive never noticed them adding any extra detail to final renderings/animations when I have speedray reflections enabled. Thoughts?
    I agree with you about global illumination...it does nothing of value for me. But I personally use the sun with real skies quite often...its good for when you want to use real skies but want finer control of shadow placement.
    A good way to use volumetric sunlight, as well as God Rays...I render them out as separate channels and paint them in, in pshop/post production. I do the same with Fog too. I find Lumion's sliders arent fine enough to simply bake them into the final image, for the most part.
    Again, thank you for putting in the work to provide all of this useful information!

    • @LuminousLabs
      @LuminousLabs  3 года назад +2

      I don't think you need to worry as much about reflection control anymore. They made it so if you don't have one in photo mode it automatically sets itself to the camera. I think it is mostly used now just in case you are getting a weird reflection from the default one and have to override it. I really hop they can expand on speedray because honestly I think if they can crank that up a few levels of quality it might be really helpful!
      Thank you for checking out the channel though :) It is always nice to hear that people are enjoying the videos.

    Nice. The lighting can be frustrating for me on interiors and I'm actually always trying to get more shadows (ambient occlusion) in the corners and crevices. (I am aware of the Omnishadow and what it does) -Otherwise the renderings have no depth and come out flat. Im probably washing them out with the spotlights. Good to know to set super low. I use them because they and the sun are the only light sources that cast shadows. Also our clients wont understand if the lights aren't on and casting light and shadow. I've just recently learned that if you add a tiny amount of weathering to objects and walls it will give you a tiny bit of AO and look more natural and not computer-like. Thx for the thorough run-through on effects. :-)

    • @LuminousLabs
      @LuminousLabs  3 года назад +1

      Yes it does seem weird that the lighting objects would not be the best way to light the scene but getting more experienced with the lighting effects will definitely help you get more defined shadows!

    • @LuminousLabs

      That skybox is actually just a drone photo from evermotion. We do however use a lot of drone photos because they are very cheap and very fast.

      Something I found actually helped me out a lot was to not use the "presets" and actually add the effects individually. This got me much more familiar with effect stack and instead of saying "how do I fix this" it lets me ask "how do I enhance this".
      The other thing about lighting is the Lumion default lights are WAY too high. They are by default set to 300 which in my opinion is like putting a search and rescue spotlight into a house lamp.

    • @LuminousLabs

      That is more difficult, however something I find helps is to turn off Real Skies and use the Sun/Sky and Cloud effects. From there you can turn up sky brightness and it should affect the interior of the scene as well. I also made a video showing how you can make walls invisible from the outside but visible from the inside. By doing this with the overcast effect it can help light interiors.

    A problem with Lumion spots set to 1 is the attenuation is tied to the intensity so they get cut off drastically after a few feet or so.

    • @LuminousLabs
      @LuminousLabs  3 года назад +1

      That is definitely an issue with the spotlights. I would normally not use them for a scene like this but I just wanted to have them included so I could show people how overpowering the default 300 setting could be. I also just wanted to bring a bit of light to the top of the shelf.
      I hope that Lumion has a big upgrade for interior lighting in the pipeline! The scene I always struggled the most with were interior bathroom scenes. They are small areas with no windows and to get the lighting right it can take awhile.
