Angelina Jordan Astar is a Norwegian born child prodigy in music. Angelina was first recorded on tape, singing a Whitney Houston song at 1 1/2 years old. She began teaching herself to sing at 2 years old. Her first studio recording was made at 6, with her singing "I Who Have Nothing." Angelina's primary focus has been on the great jazz masters, such as Screamin Jay Hawkins's 1956 classic, "I Put a Spell on You," sung in Hawkins own style. At 7, her parents relented; allowing her to audition on Norway's Got Talent. She was the last to audition, and no one was prepared for her. A diminutive 7 year old, mussy haired, barefooted, and teeth still growing in, stepped onto the stage of NGT. Her first performance was "Gloomy Sunday," Sung in the style of Billie Holiday. She went on to win shortly after turning 8. Her parents insisted that she should enjoy as normal a childhood as possible, which has been the reason she's down under the radar. Nonetheless, Angelina has performed around the world and performed for Heads of State and many others, such as Quincy Jones, Alan Walker, and Noah Jones. She's performed over 180 covers and has 5 originals, all by the age of 15. Angelina will be turning 17 in January 2023. She now lives in LA. Deciding on not signing a contract through America's Got Talent The Champions in 2020, she was prevented from being able to advance to the top 10 level. Her audition for AGT-TC was her own arrangement of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." Her audition earned a golden buzzer, as well as a congratulatory tweet from Queen. Queen subsequently gave Angelina the rights to her version of their song. Angelina also turned down a contract with Disney. She did, however, sign with Republic Records at 14. Republic gave her complete artistic control and control over the release dates. As she graduates high school in 2023, we are expecting an album and possible live performance in the US. - The Barefoot Princess - Why does Angelina sing barefooted? Angelina Jordan is known as "The Barefoot Princess" or "The Barefoot Princess of Jazz", amongst many other names. She always performs barefooted, whether in front of a live audience or during a studio performance. The story is that while living in the Middle East, at age 6, Angelina came across an orphaned girl, of her own age, sitting in the street, weighing people on a bathroom scale to earn money. Angelina said to herself, "I would like to share her life for one second to know what it is like to sit alone, wet, and damp, and barefoot in a corner of the street." Angelina could see the girl's bare feet were scarred and that it was cold outside, so she offered her own shoes to the girl. Little Angelina says that she really loved her shoes, as they were very nice and she knew she would miss them. But she saw the other little girl’s need for them, which outweighed her own desire to keep them. So she insisted the little girl take them. Angelina called her Princess, even though the girl said she didn't live in a castle, but the ruins of a building next to where she sat. After sharing their hopes and dreams, the little girl said of Angelina's wish to sing for the world, "You will become the one you dream of and when your dreams come true you, have to remember the poor children without shoes; and I will pray for you Angelina.” Later that day 6 y/o Angelina wrote in her diary, "The world is very strange. Right then and there, I felt as if a door in my heart opened up, and it was filled with lots of lights. It was as if there was, from Earth to Heaven, a staircase. I climbed the stairs. To be able to do something for another human - it was such a big thing…hard to describe really.” From that point on, Angelina takes off her shoes, in honor of ‘Princess’ and all the other less fortunate children of the world, who are orphaned, hungry, or in want of even basic clothing. In 2015, at the age of 9, Angelina wrote a book about the encounter, as everyone continued to ask why she sang barefoot. Her grandmother, Mery Zamani, created the artwork for the book. So at 9, Angelina Jordan became the youngest published author in Norway. Angelina has performed alongside many other artists, raising attention and helping to raise over 21 million euros and millions of dollars for children in need.

None in recent years, until this young lady, has moved me or made me feel the music like she does. There are so many artists and groups that people claim are better, but without auto tune or blaring music to drown out the imperfections of their voices, they would be nothing, in my opinion. Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. It is normal for a reactor who listens to Angelina for the first time, especially this cover, to be displaced. He is a genius and cannot be labeled. I understand your reaction to a 9 yr old child prodigy, Norwegian Jazz singer Angelina Jordan. I listen to her arrangement of Screamin' Jay Hawkins's original song "Spell on You" over & over in disbelief! I found her performance on the "Norway Got Talent" 2014 season went she was 7 years old. I was blown away by her version of "Gloomy Sunday" in the style of Billie Holiday and Her last performance of "Summer Time," winning the show and a worldwide fan base she calls her "Angels." No, you're not supposed to be able to sing like that at 9, although Angelina had already demonstrated that she was an incredible jazz singer by the time she got to this ridiculous arrangement - her own - and probably the best video produced so far this century. 9 years old, singing jazz for 6 years. Billie Holiday is her base to include other mentors of Ella, Etta, Louis, Frank, Elvis, and many more. She soaks up styles and singing characteristics like a sponge. We know the confusion when first hearing this and other songs she does. It comes from seeing this little child but hearing a seasoned professional with jazzy bluesy qualities. It's only the beginning of discovering her music in Angelina's Wonderland. Her musical skills and her humble humanitarian heart are already legendary at her now 16 years old.

The Original was by the author Screaming Jay Hawkins the more famous version is by Nina Simone from the 60's, I think, and now Angelina. Though I'm sure numerous others have sung it. You may have thought, Any Winehouse, but there was a bit of Louis Armstrong in there. She was brought up on the Jazz Masters Ella, Washington, Armstrong, Gershwin, Billie Holiday.

I love this performance so much. As they say AJ don't play. We get the most stunning, amazing performance of a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. It will be revisited for Decades and will remain relevant for Generations to come. Anyone who discovers this performance for the first time today or a 100 years from today are going to be as amazed and astounded as everybody has been to this point. Think of the children who will be inspired by this one performance in the decades to come. This is an Iconic performance and will always be Iconic. Angelina has on her own from early on at 6 or 7 yrs old reintroduced what I believe will be a whole new Jazz Era and redefined by this young phenom and prodigy. That is astounding! And she is just 16 years old... That is unfathomable. She has already established her proficiency and incredible work ethic in this endeavor guided by an incredible family and professional support now surrounding her.

Hi there just subbed for your journey with my Granddaughter by heart Angelina Jordan Astar - we all saw her grow up in Front of our eyes and every Angel (she gave us Fans that name) has adopted her too - maybe one thing to add is that you have not heard from her because her family is very protective and tried to grant Angelina a somehow normal childhood and best education in turning down a lot of big record companies and even Disney who showed up in Norway at her door with big Whalets after Angelina had won her National Talentshow at age 7/8 - she was allowed to do charity events and concerts in her holliday time only - after 2020 agt the Champions her family and she wisely joined Republic Records with the complete freedom to do her Art as she please and dont get promoted until she graduates school (hopefully she will finish highschool next year as we all wait for her new Album to come up) - Mark my words - next year Fall or Winter you can listen to her music everywhere on Radio - cheers from a 58 year old fanboy from Germany (soon 59)....

Her grandmother Mery Zamani is an internationally known artist (painter) who introduced Angelina to jazz from the time she was born and Mery is considered a prodigy as well and she has always been an inspiration for AJ. We are privileged to witness the evolution of this incredible artist from age 6 to now 16 with over 200 videos from about 100 different artists plus 5 originals, 2 written for her and one demo that was never released (at 10). AJ is a humble, generous, kind, empathetic and elegant young lady and soon to be the next big superstar. She signed with Republic Records at 14 and will be 17 next month (Jan.10,2023) and is due to release her first album with RR sometime next year. Hearing her for the first time challenged my beliefs about what is possible. Many have been stunned and thought “how can such a young child convey such mature emotions?” The “old soul” explanation probably has some truth, but it’s also worth realizing that young children experience intense emotions, possibly more intense than at any other time. She gives a voice to this intensity in a way that goes right to the Heart. You can hear a different side of her in each song she sings. I look forward to seeing more of your reactions to her music.

I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on RUclips, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she con convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener. Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956. She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. Things I found particularly worthy of note in this video are (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers. (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player. All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

She entered and won Norway's Got Talent at the age of 8. Amy Winehouse is a common reference point when people hear Angelina, and Angelina has covered some of Amy's songs. Also, Angelina's voice is her instrument and she has more mastery over it than most singers with decades of experience. Many of the songs she covers originally had multiple voices and a full band (or more), but in her arrangements have only a backing guitar and her voice, and her fans still often feel her's is better than the original.

Deciding on not signing a contract through America's Got Talent The Champions in 2020, she was prevented from being able to advance to the top 10 level. Her audition for AGT-TC was her own arrangement of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." Her audition earned a golden buzzer, as well as a congratulatory tweet from Queen. Queen subsequently gave Angelina the rights to her version of their song. Angelina also turned down a contract with Disney. She did, however, sign with Republic Records at 14. Republic gave her complete artistic control and control over the release dates. As she graduates high school in 2023, we are expecting an album and possible live performance in the US.
- The Barefoot Princess -
Why does Angelina sing barefooted? Angelina Jordan is known as "The Barefoot Princess" or "The Barefoot Princess of Jazz", amongst many other names. She always performs barefooted, whether in front of a live audience or during a studio performance. The story is that while living in the Middle East, at age 6, Angelina came across an orphaned girl, of her own age, sitting in the street, weighing people on a bathroom scale to earn money. Angelina said to herself, "I would like to share her life for one second to know what it is like to sit alone, wet, and damp, and barefoot in a corner of the street." Angelina could see the girl's bare feet were scarred and that it was cold outside, so she offered her own shoes to the girl. Little Angelina says that she really loved her shoes, as they were very nice and she knew she would miss them. But she saw the other little girl’s need for them, which outweighed her own desire to keep them. So she insisted the little girl take them.
Angelina called her Princess, even though the girl said she didn't live in a castle, but the ruins of a building next to where she sat. After sharing their hopes and dreams, the little girl said of Angelina's wish to sing for the world, "You will become the one you dream of and when your dreams come true you, have to remember the poor children without shoes; and I will pray for you Angelina.” Later that day 6 y/o Angelina wrote in her diary, "The world is very strange. Right then and there, I felt as if a door in my heart opened up, and it was filled with lots of lights. It was as if there was, from Earth to Heaven, a staircase. I climbed the stairs. To be able to do something for another human - it was such a big thing…hard to describe really.”
From that point on, Angelina takes off her shoes, in honor of ‘Princess’ and all the other less fortunate children of the world, who are orphaned, hungry, or in want of even basic clothing. In 2015, at the age of 9, Angelina wrote a book about the encounter, as everyone continued to ask why she sang barefoot. Her grandmother, Mery Zamani, created the artwork for the book. So at 9, Angelina Jordan became the youngest published author in Norway. Angelina has performed alongside many other artists, raising attention and helping to raise over 21 million euros and millions of dollars for children in need.

None in recent years, until this young lady, has moved me or made me feel the music like she does. There are so many artists and groups that people claim are better, but without auto tune or blaring music to drown out the imperfections of their voices, they would be nothing, in my opinion. Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - Her nationality is Norwegian but is fluent in English even at this age - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. I listen to her arrangement of Screamin' Jay Hawkins's original song "Spell on You" over & over in disbelief! I found her performance on the "Norway Got Talent" 2014 season went she was 7 years old. I was blown away by her version of "Gloomy Sunday" in the style of Billie Holiday and Her last performance of "Summer Time," winning the show and a worldwide fan base she calls her "Angels." Warning, You may fall into Angelina's "Rabbit Hole" with no way out and become another "Angel"!
No, you're not supposed to be able to sing like that at 9, although Angelina had already demonstrated that she was an incredible jazz singer by the time she got to this ridiculous arrangement - her own - and probably the best video produced so far this century. Angelina won Norway's Got Talent when she was 8 yrs old after starting the competition at 7 yrs old. The youngest winner of any Got Talent show on the planet. She had to wait two years because you had to be 7 yrs old to enter. She started with a rendition of Billie Holiday's 'Gloomy Sunday' which she just infused with Billie's soul. She followed this by another Billie classic with a pitch perfect rendition of 'I'm a Fool to Want You' acapella. 9 years old, singing jazz for 6 years. Billie Holiday is her base to include other mentors of Ella, Etta, Louis, Frank, Elvis, and many more. She soaks up styles and singing characteristics like a sponge. We know the confusion when first hearing this and other songs she does. It comes from seeing this little child but hearing a seasoned professional with jazzy bluesy qualities. It's only the beginning of discovering her music in Angelina's Wonderland. Her musical skills and her humble humanitarian heart are already legendary at her now 16 years old.

The Original was by the author Screaming Jay Hawkins the more famous version is by Nina Simone from the 60's, I think, and now Angelina. Though I'm sure numerous others have sung it. You may have thought, Any Winehouse, but there was a bit of Louis Armstrong in there. She was brought up on the Jazz Masters Ella, Washington, Armstrong, Gershwin, Billie Holiday.
Screamin' Jay Hawkins, original version (his face was on the mug she was holding at the beginning of the video). Please, listen to her rendition of Gloomy Sunday (when she was seven! And she IS essentially, intrinsically awesome.) Thank you so much for not interrupting the video.
I love this performance so much. As they say AJ don't play. We get the most stunning, amazing performance of a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. It will be revisited for Decades and will remain relevant for Generations to come. Anyone who discovers this performance for the first time today or a 100 years from today are going to be as amazed and astounded as everybody has been to this point.
Think of the children who will be inspired by this one performance in the decades to come. This is an Iconic performance and will always be Iconic. Angelina has on her own from early on at 6 or 7 yrs old reintroduced what I believe will be a whole new Jazz Era and redefined by this young phenom and prodigy. That is astounding! And she is just 16 years old... That is unfathomable. She has already established her proficiency and incredible work ethic in this endeavor guided by an incredible family and professional support now surrounding her.
We know Angelina will continue to amaze! We will be here to experience and cherish it for as long as we live.... and I am praying for many more years for myself to enjoy it till the end of my days... Hi there just subbed for your journey with my Granddaughter by heart Angelina Jordan Astar - we all saw her grow up in Front of our eyes and every Angel (she gave us Fans that name) has adopted her too - maybe one thing to add is that you have not heard from her because her family is very protective and tried to grant Angelina a somehow normal childhood and best education in turning down a lot of big record companies and even Disney who showed up in Norway at her door with big Whalets after Angelina had won her National Talentshow at age 7/8 - she was allowed to do charity events and concerts in her holliday time only - after 2020 agt the Champions her family and she wisely joined Republic Records with the complete freedom to do her Art as she please and dont get promoted until she graduates school (hopefully she will finish highschool next year as we all wait for her new Album to come up) - Mark my words - next year Fall or Winter you can listen to her music everywhere on Radio - cheers from a 58 year old fanboy from Germany (soon 59)....

Her grandmother Mery Zamani is an internationally known artist (painter) who introduced Angelina to jazz from the time she was born and Mery is considered a prodigy as well and she has always been an inspiration for AJ. We are privileged to witness the evolution of this incredible artist from age 6 to now 16 with over 200 videos from about 100 different artists plus 5 originals, 2 written for her and one demo that was never released (at 10). AJ is a humble, generous, kind, empathetic and elegant young lady and soon to be the next big superstar. She signed with Republic Records at 14 and will be 17 next month (Jan.10,2023) and is due to release her first album with RR sometime next year. He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. The barefoot is part of Angelina's mission to get shoes all kids of this world and she set up a charity for this. When she visited Iran, her grandmothers country of origin, she saw a young girl barefoot begging at the side of the road. Angelina gave the girl her shoes and decided to always perform without shoes. Along with her grandmother, who is a known artist, they wrote and published a book about the incident. It made Angelina the youngest person in Norway to publish a book. The proceedes go to her charity, so far she has collected, along with others, over 21 million Euro's.

Your next one you should watch is her age 13 audition for AGT the Champions BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY. Because it is a example of how she choses the texture of her voice to suit the song. She has nearly 200 songs and a very loyL fan base called Angels. My favourite of her recent ones 16 years old SUSPICIOUS MINDS. Watch the one in the antique shop as the arrangement is pure Angelina. The one live with the band is not as good because the band goes back to a more traditional arrangement.
The arrangement in suspicious minds is pure Angelina, but it is credited to Rob Christie, her pianist in every video since republic records signed her, and head of Republic LA, Grammy winner etc. Because as you say it is pure Angelina, as if she wrote it herself, written perfectly for her, I took it as a message from Rob that he's on board with what she does and isn't trying to change her in any way.

Her parents wanted her to have a normal childhood and finish school. Probably one of the reasons her label didnt do the big bang marketing push yet. But everyone in the industry agrees she's a safe bet to become one of the big names.
This song has been covered by quite a few artists including Annie Lennox, Nina Simone, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Pete Townshend of The Who. The original artist was Screamin' Jay Hawkins and it was his picture on the candle Angelina held at the beginning of the clip. This was her tribute to him and at 9 years and 2 months old she outclassed professional singers over three or four times her age.

Hearing her for the first time challenged my beliefs about what is possible. Many have been stunned and thought “how can such a young child convey such mature emotions?” The “old soul” explanation probably has some truth, but it’s also worth realizing that young children experience intense emotions, possibly more intense than at any other time. She gives a voice to this intensity in a way that goes right to the Heart. You can hear a different side of her in each song she sings. I look forward to seeing more of your reactions to her music.

I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on RUclips, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she con convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener.
Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956. She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original.
Things I found particularly worthy of note in this video are
(a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled.
(b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers.
(c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it.
(d) The smile on the face of the Bass player.
(e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine"
(f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand
(g) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody.
Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.
That would be PRODIGY, #'S don't lie, and it's impossible to see and hear this for the 1st time and NOT be confused... 16 yrs old now and you'll probably be speechless when you see and hear her again... That's if you dare.. 😉🎵🎤🎹🎷🎶🎸👏🏻🔥🔥🔥

She's basically been a star since she was 7 years old. First and foremost, she is a jazz singer but has the ability to sing any genre. She also does all of her own musical arrangements. Her early influences are Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, and Etta James to name a few. Her love of jazz came from her grandmother playing jazz music around her when she was young. She entered and won Norway's Got Talent at the age of 8. With her new found fame, she used it to appear on many shows from abroad and help raise millions for the less fortunate children around the world. At age 13, she was invited to participate on America's Got Talent: The Champions in 2020. She shocked the audience and the judges with her rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. She received a standing ovation from all and got the Golden Buzzer from judge Heidi Klum to go straight to the Finals. Her performance went viral and even the group Queen responded on Twitter by saying, " Wow, what a rendition!" Not only that, but she received the copyrights for her version of this song from Queen, which makes it hers now. She did not win, but her fan base grew and expanded her popularity.

She is the youngest published author in Norway. Angelina wrote and her Grandmother illustrated a book about why she sings barefoot. She was on a trip to Iran where her grandmother is from and met a street girl weighing people for money. Angelina sat and talked with the girl. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, a doctor but that it could never happen. Angelina told her to never give up hope. The girl complimented Angelina on her shoes and Angelina noticed her scarred bare feet so she gave them to her, and the little girl told Angelina she would pray for her every day. Angelina sings barefoot to this day to remind herself (and the world) that there are still children in need. All book proceeds go to charity.

Amy Winehouse is a common reference point when people hear Angelina, and Angelina has covered some of Amy's songs. Also, Angelina's voice is her instrument and she has more mastery over it than most singers with decades of experience. Many of the songs she covers originally had multiple voices and a full band (or more), but in her arrangements have only a backing guitar and her voice, and her fans still often feel her's is better than the original.

I see I'm already late to the party, so I won't repeat what others have probably already said about her age here and what not 🙂 But I will just reinforce what they probably have told you ; that you have absolutely NO CLUE as to what you've just discovered. IMO she is already, at age 16, one of the very best singers in the world, if not THE best. The G.O.A.T. status will be hers before she hangs up her vocal gloves, believe me. She's amazing! The only singer whose ever been able to entreat me to listen to their music repeatedly, daily, for several years now. Her capabilities are outstanding. Any track from her, not a bad one.
