Younger folks today have no idea how big of a deal this fight was, especially considering it wasn't heavyweight. The golden boy gold medal winner taking on the ultimate badass with a chip on his shoulder, who left lightweight after dominating it for around 7 years to take on bigger, and bigger name, opponents. It had all the drama of a Hollywood movie.

Don King being slimy as usual. He dropped Duran like a hot potato right after the No Mas incident, and was also happy to book the early rematch (he likely hoped Duran would lose and then use the pre-fight antics as marketing material for a trilogy bout, that's smart but also low).
The narrative of Leonard fighting a wrong strategy is not very accurate. Leonard himself has great footwork but is not that crafty of an outfighter/boxer (when he fought actual outfighters like Benitez and Hearns, he was outboxed and had to lean on his speed/power to get him out of there). They wanted to push Duran backwards because they felt that HE couldn't fight on the outside. Duran used his underrated counterpunching when they were at distance, and bulled Leonard to the ropes where he had the advantage. In the rematch, Leonard danced but wasn't exactly able to outbox Duran the way Benitez did (Leonard could move and he could punch, but he couldn't move and punch the way guys like Ali did). It was the taunting more than anything which made Duran quit.
Leonard has his technical flaws, but he was also a smart fighter who used his athletic talents incredibly well. He was basically unbeatable during his prime, which is why Duran beating him despite being the smaller and older fighter is such a great achievement.

Nope, Duran was under contract for more fights with King......his last fight with King was the Kirkland Laing debacle. King yelled at Duran after the fight that Duran would never fight for King again......Bob Arum stepped in and with 2 fights, Duran was jr Middleweight champ and had his career back. King stabbed Duran in the back and got Duran to sign for the 2nd Leonard fight by throwing all that cash at him, everyone knowing he couldn't be ready for the fight. Duran was uninspired having to fill out the contract with King.

The quick rematch was signed by Carlos eleta not King, who also abandoned Duran btw.
I think you are selling Leonard short. He handidly outboxed Benitez. He tried to outbox Duran in the early rounds of the first fight as well but Duran was faster than him to the punch and too elusive. There are interviews before the 1st fight where Ray pretty much admits their strategy of boxing Duran instead of Brawling him.
Ray also got a 21 foot ring instead of the standard 18 foot one for the rematch. Clearly hit and run was on his mind. It didn't quite work as well as it should have given Duran was only a point behind after 7 rounds.

In I Never Played the Game by Cosell, he writes about how the relationship between Duran and him deteriorated after the No Mas fight. After that fight Duran developed an animosity toward Cosell. Duran knew Cosell and Leonard were friends; not just colleagues. After Duran’s defeat in New Orleans, there was a scathing interview Cosell conducted on live TV inquiring if Duran was smuggling in cocaine prior to the rematch with Leonard. Cosell made Duran look bad. Duran knew Leonard was Cosell’s boy, so Duran knew he wouldn’t ever be in good with Cosell.
It came to a head in the back staging area of the Holmes Cooney fight. Duran started throwing shadow boxing punches at Cosell that got increasingly closer until Duran actually swiped and hit Cosell’s shoulder. Cosell realized, then, that Duran wasn’t playing. It was Cosell’s wife that stepped in front of Duran and told him to go away. Duran gave Cosell one last glare and left.

For a few minutes there, the epitome of phoniness, SRL, actually had a few genuine moments admitting it was Duran and not the wrong strategy to slug that caused him to lose this fight. That wasn't what he was spouting just a few days later saying he fell victim to his own macho wanting to show the world he wasn't intimidated by Duran's reputation and pre-fight taunts. Later, he also questioned the validity of Duran's decision win asking fans to go back and watch the fight again and look at how well he was doing during infighting and if he really should have gotten the decision. Here, beat up, sore and tired, he let his guard drop for just about 90 seconds giving Duran credit for forcing him to fight Duran's fight.

yup, Duran's foot speed was close to Ray's in that fight, so Duran could easily cut off the ring and force Ray to fight. There was another interview with Cosell a few days later, in the 'studio' and Howard asked Ray again, "why didn't you move, why did you stand and fight"....Ray said it again, that Duran was cutting off the ring and Ray couldn't move. Duran made Ray fight, he had no choice. The 2nd fight, Duran was physically a mess and could hardly move like he did in Montreal. Duran took the 10 mill in the 2nd fight, but he also found out that his people sold him out. King helped Ray get Roberto into the ring when he wasn't prepared. Duran's corner wanted the money, Ray gave up most of his purse to Duran's team, to force Duran into taking the fight. It's the only way Ray could have won, Montreal proved that Duran was better.

The reason why Floyd Mayweather never lost is because he always got it right the first time.

He lost to Castillo and Maindana, they both throw/landed more punches than him.

He never rematched fellow greats. The fact that he had to rematch maidana of all people says all about his competition.

Ray is one of my all time favourites, but he always had a way to disguise the fact that he was making excuses. Anyone with intelligence will know what I mean.

His wife and sister both passed out from horror at ringside, seeing the horrific beating that Duran was delivering to his ribs when against the ropes. Most men would consider at least discussing it with their family before rematching the same guy who delivered that whipping.

Back then, being married was serious business. Not like today where nothing is taken serious. A marriage was like a partnership. And you discussed EVERYTHING with your partner. From hairstyles to the clothes you wear

  • @Wilson632

What a scrap Leonard said he had to use the referee to keep the Duran off of him. I thought Duran won the first half of the fight and Leonard won the second half. I gave Leonard a Split Decision win. But Duran was a Don King fighter. So the split decision would have to go to Duran🤜🤛
