  • This one is for my good friend Oakroom48 who just celebrated her birthday. Barbara and I have both been wishing that we could have seen this production of "Arabella" by Richard Strauss with Julia Varady and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. The production was at the Munich opera in January 1977. Hope you enjoy this Barb! Sorry I'm late for your birthday, but you know I've been having computer issues.
    Synopsis of the opera here.

"...so I give myself to you for time and eternity"". They married the same year (1977) when this was recorded. Absolutely beautiful! Thank you!

From 5:59 on, this duet is pure gold. One of the most beautiful things Strauss ever wrote. This is what true love would sound like if it could speak (or sing).

Sometimes I think I prefer Arabella to the Rosenkavalier

This is a very beautiful and deeply touching video. As others have commented, I do not know if DFD and Varady were husband and wife then but no matter. Knowing this about their personal lives adds an exalted dimension to their declaration of love. Very poignant.

@dermotafan Don't worry, she's more than discovered by true opera buffs, as well as lauded by opera critics the world over. I agree with you that she is great, my preference for Della Casa notwithstanding!

I adore here, but I've never warmed to Fischer-Dieskau's sound. Prefer Bernd Weikl or Ingvar Wixell. I find the beloved German baritone always seems to be pushing for more and more sound. Varady is glorious here.

Julia Varady is Fischer-Dieskau's widow. I don't know if they were married when this was took place.
