Only thing he can do in a pick and roll is drop. He’s either stopping a lob or stopping an attempt at the basket. He’s also not good enough on the perimeter to guard skilled bigs, which aren’t rare anymore. His defense is outdated. He’s a good shot blocker and good at playing drop coverage but he’s got some slow ass feet
game theory is about taking away what your opponent likes to do most. i don't think any player in the league is perfect for every scenario. the main value of having a rim protector is that it increases the amount of shots outside the paint, and gives you some help in guessing what you can give up.
@@glovs4188 Shush most NBA fans don't like that take. They like players that can do one thing well but don't realize those types of players should be on the bench.
@@glovs4188in a vacuum yes, but in Basketball for example protecting the Rim is by leaps and bounds the most important defensive attribute. It's like Goal Keeping in soccer. I agree but when you haven’t someone like that as in Rudy’s case you have to people who can hold their own on the perimeter. When he was on the jazz he got exposed due to them having poor perimeter defenders so.
@@clover7726That’s not true. You need perimeter defense just as much as rim protection. Did you not just see what the Clippers did to Rudy on the Jazz? The Jazz had no good perimeter defenders so every time Rudy went to protect the rim they got a wide open 3. Elite rim protectors without perimeter defenders can make teams pay by forcing the centers to close in on guards while they dish it out. Players like Luka, Kyrie, James Harden, Steph, and LeBron do it all the time.

Rudy is a great defender not 4 x DPOY good i prefer AD all day to him but his problem is his offensive pairing with scoring guards. Rudy and Ant doesn’t work bc Ant isn’t a great passer same with D Mitchell, u can have a lob threat vertical spacing big who can’t score the ball, but they need to paired with a great passer, like a cp3 or a luka doncic that way there weaknesses is minimed and u can win with them.
Do a vid on cam thomas, he has the keys to the franchise right now. Itll be cool to see whether those 40 point gameS were flukes or he can truly be a star
I think I’d still take A-B tier defensive versatility over A+ rim defending and c-d tier everything else. I think he’s a bad switcher and a sub-par perimeter defender, he has to stay low on the post to be effective. teams like the thunder and the Celtics will take advantage of that and he’ll get absolutely dismantled like he does every year in the playoffs when teams get a chance to fully scheme around his inefficiencies.
This year Rudy got a pitty DPOY. It was Wemby and it was not even close. Wemby should have been UNANIMOUS DPOY. I would also take AD as a defender over Rudy any day.
All jokes aside Haslem has a real point. Limiting Rudy’s minutes in playoff basketball has proven itself to be a necessity. Im there is a real argument to be made that if Finchy pulled Rudy on that final play Luka will probably still make that shot cuz he is Luka but with a different defender it would’ve been in the immortal words of the GOAT “a bad shot” instead of the baby reindeer cook session we got
So you have 1 example where you feel the outcome would have been the same... Now let's talk about the rest of the playoffs where the Timberwolves smoked the Suns, upset the reigning champs (with Rudy Gobert having the 2nd highest +/- of the team behind Conley) and guess what: against Dallas Gobert had the best +/- of the 5 TWolves starters. What was your argument again for benching Gobert and who should play more in his place??
@@maartenvz Naz Reid is a much more versatile defender so him. You can't always look at the plus minus to determine how good a player did, because as Kenny showed us, Rudy got cooked multiple times because he can't switch.
It really pissed me off when people compared wemby to him citing stocks. Like bruh the spurs were 22nd in defensive rating. idgaf if you have 17 stocks, if your team is 22nd in defense, you're not that good of a rim protector. And I understand the t-wolves have great personelle, but he unlocked that in them. They can all be fierce on the perimeter because they know they have him.
My question about Rudy has always been this; is his defence good enough to make up for the fact that you basically play 4 on 5 on offence, because his game is so limited? And in the Playoffs so far, the answer is no.
20:44 man look at the effort from Ant, it's basically a 2 on 3 break so the defence has numbers and he could have easily picked up Hardy but he just backpedals and then steps out of the way without putting any pressure on the ball or protecting the rim. Doesn't box out anyone, just a lazy/Hardenesque play.
Nah. Bro is a non factor outside of 8 feet from the basket. Using these made up "advanced analytic stats" to justify him being a DPOY is exactly why he's overrated. Defense has so many levels and the only thing he's effective at is as a help defense shot blocker.
@@MrJman967 you understand why big rim protectors are favored for this award? Bc shots at the rim are the most efficient shot in basketball, if you take away that, the opposing team has to settle for shits they wouldnt normally take. Like kenny said, its not abt the things that happen, its the things he prevents from happening.
Kenny you should import a college team into 2k and rebuild from an expansion draft. You could spin a wheel for a random team or just go with you're team of choice.
Who’s the perfect defender in the league? Besides…Bam or like AD? And I guess Wemby. But most guys can do one or the other. Draymond great help defender, good on ball, but rim protection?? Cmon. We watch was the Lakers do to the Warriors. If you pulled Kendrick Perkins up on ball screens, he would get fried. Nobody ask Jrue holiday to block shots at the rim and if they did, he would look terrible as a defender. Rudy does his job well.
Rudy is one of the greatest rim protectors relative to his era. The issue is that he's just a rim protector. His hedge defense is not great due to his slow feet, and he's a liability when switching. In an era where switch defense and hedge defense are required, it's really impressive that his teams all do well defensively despite being limited to drop coverage.
The hard part of evaluating defense is that most defensive decisions, especially in the playoffs, are largely influenced by coaching. Even below average defenders can look good if the coaches strategize correctly. This is why KAT looked really good defending Jokic and really bad against everyone else.
@@skinnytimmy1 he is very washed. Bro isnt even top 15 anymore. Not only that the past 5 years hes been injury prone and hasnt been available for the playoffs. Thats the definition of washed kid
Before i watch, i think his impact solely from the rim is enough to put him as a top 3 lock in defensive impact every season. It’s just that his perimeter defense can be exposed and in doing so, taking him away from the rim is a disadvantage even if a guy like luka doesn’t score on gobert directly.
“I just made a highlight block but they still scored” great quote summing up how overrated blocks as a defensive metric are. And rim protection for that matter when it comes to determining individual defense given Dpoy is an individual award
The problem with Gobert is AD, Draymond and Bam. Because Now we have seen bigs who can protect the paint and then run out to the 3 point line. Or who can switch on to the others teams best perimeter player and consistently stay in front of him . The eye test just says they look like better defenders.
it feels good to know my wolves were your most watched team last year. plus it’s part xenophobia, part rudy’s controversies, him being misunderstood as a defender(casual watchers), and people don’t like to hype up a player who averages 13 ppg
I feel like his film in the jazz vs rockets series needs to be looked at because watching that I felt like james harden and clint capela were unstoppable
Shot deterrence is the word that describes Rudy's defense in my opinion. He's not gonna put up 5 block games constantly like a Wemby, Chet or AD. He relies on his length and positioning. If I can remember I think he said that tries to stay down, and let his reach and positioning work for him as much as he possible so that he can be in position to get the rebound. He's got crazy dimensions so it makes sense, but think this is what also why players don't fear him defensively. Along side him being a big weak guarding up at the 3 point line ( he can sometimes but it's normally splash plays. Players may scurry from him when they see him, but they will come back to try him. One thing I do like about Rudy is that I do like that spin recovery he does when he has to close out at the 3pt line. Sometimes he catch people with that.
The problem with this. Cause he's slow on his feet, he can only be in the right position if he plays low drop. And low drop leads to wide open pull up 3s. Which is like 70%TS for most star guards. And if he plays the level of the screen his slow footedness gets expose and guards blow by him. The reason his regular season defensive metrics is so good is cause probably 20 teams don't have that star guard. And the reason why he cant win the playoffs is cause the 10 teams that do will absolutely destroy him. Now, if he can atleast do. Something on offense to justify him being on the court cause his defense has been nullified. But, he doesn't. So that does deserve a supermax? Up to you.
Wemby's individual numbers were comparable if not better. Rudy benefitted from his team's collective defense as well as team success. I wonder what the percentage charts of shots deterred would look like this year.
11:15 it started vs the Rockets in 2017 or 18, whatever season when Utah was close to 1 seed I still think Rudy is great, but just saying you should track from when the criticism started Utah was really good for many seaons but always struggled because teams exlploited Rudy being on This may not have been Rudy only, but I think those situations are what should be analysed
Mavs really ran high pick and roll all game. I remember seeing it live and saying it looked like someone playing 2k as the mavs since luka and kyrie literally just took turns spamming pick and rolls
I would like to see this style of video done with AD, BAM, or Draymond. I think the point on versatility vs run protection for a championship winning team is key for the discussion around Rudy’s DPOY. Also would be worth going thru Kawhi’s DPOY season and even Marcus Smart’s to see what may have pushed voters in their directions given they aren’t run protectors(vertically at least, Smart has always been great with taking charges). You could even through in a Jrue. Rudy Gobert has the size to deter shots at the rim, how much of that deterrence is just from his size tho? I think he gets the over rated thing from his lack of improvement on the offensive end. In the clipper game, like Kenny said, he couldn’t punish them for being small with offensive rebounds or post touches and we know he had terrible hands then, still kinda bad now. But that kinda makes him look worse in the post season when we know a five out look with make him useless, but that’s only because of his lack of offensive impact. I don’t think that’s fair to discredit his DPOY awards even tho I feel like Draymond deserved more during the warriors run than just one and it does feel like AD and Bam should also have one, so it’s easy to point at the guy with the most in that span as the problem, which admittedly also isn’t fair to Rudy.
It's the offensive shit that's really limiting for Gobert. The reason he got benched in the Olympics is because France desperately needed offense and Rudy wasn't providing any. Not that he was struggling on defense. Plus France felt they had enough defensive weapons to where they felt they could still manage with Rudy on the bench.
I do believe now that Rudy is underrated, and overly hated, but I still wonder how much of his defensive impact is his reputation, and how much is his real defensive skill.
Based on the examples of Rudy vs Mavs the blame was on the coaching staff because their defensive scheme was bad they needed Kat to be on PJ or a bad shooter then help on the roller
Exactly my point dude, you can’t be a dpoy if your only job is to sit under the basket and look scary??? Where are the crazy rebound numbers & blocks if all you’re gonna do is sit in the paint??? He’s a HORRIBLE defender on the perimeter so ik for a fact that doesn’t go towards his defensive prowess…..it’s just meat riding atp
Rudy is an amazing defender and he managed to massively improve Minnesota' s defense. His problem is offense tbh and it is serious. His jumpsuit is not existent, he can't consistently make his free throws so he can't score consistently unless it is a dunk. In a playoff setting that is a serious problem.

But Rudy did great things with the French team, 21 points 16 rebounds in the 2019 quarter final world cup against team USA, and he locked up Pau Gasol in the 2014 World cup in quarter final again. Right now he's just the backup of one the best young players in the World
i wanted to cry watching that luka step back live. hurt so much
Only thing he can do in a pick and roll is drop. He’s either stopping a lob or stopping an attempt at the basket. You can’t switch on screens with him on the floor so players like Brunson, Luka, or shai pull up for a middy while he’s dropping to the basket. He’s also not good enough on the perimeter to guard skilled bigs, which aren’t rare anymore. His defense is outdated. He’s a good shot blocker and good at playing drop coverage but he’s got some slow ass feet
Unreal Rudy love
These type of vids are fire!
I have a deep appreciation for the fact that even with as much basketball content you create, you are doing more to schematically understand the game.
AD having 0 DPOYs is criminal
He play for the Lakers
If Duncan can’t have any so can AD
@@M0IVD0 Duncan should've won too
game theory is about taking away what your opponent likes to do most. i don't think any player in the league is perfect for every scenario. the main value of having a rim protector is that it increases the amount of shots outside the paint, and gives you some help in guessing what you can give up.
Game theory also tells you that jack of all trades master of none is often times better than a master of one.
In basketball it's literally impossible to have an elite defense without having elite rim protection and that's why guards will never be even close to as valuable as a big on defense.
Players like Luka, Kyrie, James Harden, Steph, and LeBron do it all the time.
great vid. had to dip before the mavs game point of the video. can’t relive that this soon.

Rudy so over Hated
Overrated. The word is Overrated.
Absolutely not. Well deserved. After the goofy stuff he did during Covid, he deserves all the hate
@@FinneganMurray-pb2ej I’m sure the nuggets don’t think so
@@FinneganMurray-pb2ejHe is underrated. Every team he has been part of has had a top notch defense.
If everyone thinks he’s “overrated” then he isn’t overrated anymore. Same thing happened with dame, he was “underrated” for years even after being a multiple time all star/all-nba player
Wait, wait, wait, 0:52 Kendrick Perkins seriously has a vote for awards??? Dude has the worst takes ever!
as a wolves fan it was so painful to relive that dallas game. Had to be reminded that we were up 15 at one point and the whole time I knew we were losing. Lob after lob after lob. Rudy was really outplayed by gafford and lively that whole series
The classic edge shirt goes crazy
All valid points but the dpoy is a regular season award, and the dude was the anchor of a crazy defense, imo this was his last year still better than wemby
Draymond and perk and them just wanna pick on the dude everybody picks on to feel better abt themselves, its really a case of bullying more than anything😂
Was blessed enough to see Lukas shot in person at the game, unfortunately I’m a wolves fan😭
12:20 this was one of the first playoff games I ever watched, or at least remember watching, being new to actually watching basketball, and as a Jazz fan, I was so mad, and thinking back to it now it just hurts
Lebron cheated by teaming with AD. The guy avg 25ppg 10rpg and elite defense on a nightly basis. LeFraud n3eds LeHelp

he's 7'1, you shouldn't need an elite passer for him to be a lob threat.

Do a vid on cam thomas, he has the keys to the franchise right now. Itll be cool to see whether those 40 point gameS were flukes or he can truly be a star
Crazy how it was the Knicks game
fate works in mysterious ways doesn’t it
I think I’d still take A-B tier defensive versatility over A+ rim defending and c-d tier everything else.
@@dothog1401 Naz wasn't good defending this playoffs, a couple of highlights blocks don't mean he was effective at all.
Top 6 wemby playing
Graph is also Jakob Poeltl prop lol goddamn

this was a really enjoyable video format!
Shoutout to that Edge shirt 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
That edge shit is fire
My question about Rudy has always been this; is his defence good enough to make up for the fact that you basically play 4 on 5 on offence, because his game is so limited? And in the Playoffs so far, the answer is no.
these are the videos i subbed for
Such a great video Kenny. You are incredible at what you do.
Kenny knew what he was doing with the title wearing a shirt that says edge
Help defense and paint deterrence is important, but so is on ball defense.
This was the most fun I’ve had watching a Kenny vid
20:44 man look at the effort from Ant, it's basically a 2 on 3 break so the defence has numbers and he could have easily picked up Hardy but he just backpedals and then steps out of the way without putting any pressure on the ball or protecting the rim. Doesn't box out anyone, just a lazy/Hardenesque play.
Yall just find any way to suck on hardens meat huh?
kenny i was just watching a ttw rudy rant this is great
I am loving these vid ideas by kenny it's so new and fun to watch

Please keep doing this “investigation” style videos they’re very entertaining
Nah 4 dpoys means ur a great defender no matter what
Nah. Bro is a non factor outside of 8 feet from the basket. Using these made up "advanced analytic stats" to justify him being a DPOY is exactly why he's overrated. Defense has so many levels and the only thing he's effective at is as a help defense shot blocker.
@@MrJman967 and as a post defender and is a walking top 6 defense.
you dont know how nba awards work lmao
@@MrJman967 you understand why big rim protectors are favored for this award? Bc shots at the rim are the most efficient shot in basketball, if you take away that, the opposing team has to settle for shits they wouldnt normally take. Like kenny said, its not abt the things that happen, its the things he prevents from happening.
Zero critical thinking detected
I literally just cast that game 6 out of my mind as a Jazz fan. It was the only way to keep going. That game broke me and I have never been the same😭
Can you go back and rewatch washed players best season? Like cp3, russ, harden, kawhi, and etc
Kawhi ain't washed 😂
@@skinnytimmy1 he is very washed. Bro isnt even top 15 anymore. Not only that the past 5 years hes been injury prone and hasnt been available for the playoffs. Thats the definition of washed kid
Klay to
Before i watch, i think his impact solely from the rim is enough to put him as a top 3 lock in defensive impact every season. It’s just that his perimeter defense can be exposed and in doing so, taking him away from the rim is a disadvantage even if a guy like luka doesn’t score on gobert directly.
Most hated player for no reason
Is that an Edge shirt? Like the Rated R Superstar? 🙌
Great video, Kenny.
“I just made a highlight block but they still scored” great quote summing up how overrated blocks as a defensive metric are. And rim protection for that matter when it comes to determining individual defense given Dpoy is an individual award
Loved it. Great video
Can you do one on an mvp season??
sending this to the gc thank u kenny
Would love to see a video about your top5 or whatever favourite roll players both ever and active
The problem with Gobert is AD, Draymond and Bam. Because Now we have seen bigs who can protect the paint and then run out to the 3 point line. Or who can switch on to the others teams best perimeter player and consistently stay in front of him . The eye test just says they look like better defenders.
Mitch did that man filthy wit that in n out

Kenny changed the title 👀
it feels good to know my wolves were your most watched team last year. plus it’s part xenophobia, part rudy’s controversies, him being misunderstood as a defender(casual watchers), and people don’t like to hype up a player who averages 13 ppg
as a wolves fan I dont like how much we payed but still love big ruu, was tuff to watch him get cooked by luka
Up to you.
U should do one for the year Marcus smart won it, a lot of people were saying it was more of a “damn, here u go” type of award.
Great video kenny!!
Love this series. Next can we do.. Does Giannis have a bag?
Really like the videos Kenny
Wemby's individual numbers were comparable if not better. Rudy benefitted from his team's collective defense as well as team success. I wonder what the percentage charts of shots deterred would look like this year.
11:15 it started vs the Rockets in 2017 or 18, whatever season when Utah was close to 1 seed
I still think Rudy is great, but just saying you should track from when the criticism started
Utah was really good for many seaons but always struggled because teams exlploited Rudy being on
This may not have been Rudy only, but I think those situations are what should be analysed
I don’t think that’s fair to discredit his DPOY awards even tho I feel like Draymond deserved more during the warriors run than just one and it does feel like AD and Bam should also have one, so it’s easy to point at the guy with the most in that span as the problem, which admittedly also isn’t fair to Rudy.
was at this game ( im a clippers fan). most insane game ive ever been to. Terance Mann is my king.
Beef Stew lowkey been holding it down ever since he stepped into the league
Rudy is an amazing defender and he managed to massively improve Minnesota' s defense. His problem is offense tbh and it is serious. His jumpsuit is not existent, he can't consistently make his free throws so he can't score consistently unless it is a dunk. In a playoff setting that is a serious problem.
