    Thanks for the upload. I saw the show in Edmonton that year. After years of rock bands this show completely blew my mind. I was hooked. It was so different and amazing. Great sound, all things considered.

    His Vancouver show on November 9th 1980 was cancelled due to a snow storm and re booked for March 81 . It was the most anticipated concert in many years and was totally awsome , he did not disappoint and to this day puts on a great show

    Not to be picky, but this recording is definitely from the last night of the Teletour in 1980, which took place at Kinsmen Fieldhouse in Edmonton, Canada on 12 Nov 1980. I have a recording from the night before (Max Bell Arena in Calgary, Canada on 11 Nov 1980) as well as this one. You can tell this is the last night of the Teletour because of the band introductions between Tracks and We Are Glass. And there was also that "bum note" played during Down In The Park. For The Calgary show, there was no bum note in DITP...and there were no band introductions either.

    Outstanding... Gary had an excellent drummer. His band deserves more credit. Also his bass player Paul. High 5 guys. Superb sound on this recording. Must be a soundboard
    Edit: I wish Cedric was still on the drums for Gary. He truly was a very talented drummer and helped Gary shape his earlier sound. Was Cedric always with Gary or only on his 1st few records?

    • @davidspion9548
      @davidspion9548 2 года назад +1

      Cedric wasn't on Numan's early work. The first two albums had Gary's uncle, Jess Lidyard, on drums.
      Ced joined when Gary dropped the Tubeway Army name and recorded The Pleasure Principle album. His uncle left the band due to not wanting to tour.
      Sadly, Cedric died in 2012. He was a great drummer and will always be missed by fans of Numan who were around back then.

    Many thanks for uploading, Ian! Much appreciated, mate! It's a great and unusual audio recording - sounds like it's straight from the desk as a monitor recording, and as you write, probably for radio. Hardly any reverb or processing on the vocals, and a dream for any analogue synth player to try to replicate the raw synth sounds. AND thanks for the Beach Boys and Who uploads, and playlists and more. Great channel to discover. Hope all our Numanoid 'friends' discover your channel soon! Happy Days! ... Ian

    Ian! I believe you've uploaded one of the most unique videos we're EVER gonna see/hear of Gary Numan!
    00:48:37 Are 'Friends' Electric ...
    Y'all just sing it for yourselves as you've always been hearing it. Give it some nasal:
    Naa-aa Naa-aa Naa-aaaaa , Naa-aa Naa-aa Naa-aaaaa , Naa-aa Naa-aa Naa-aaaaa, Naa-aa Naa-aa Naa-aa- Naa-aa ... rpt.
    Each note runs into and effectively overlaps the next. Just listen to the many studio/live versions. Sing-along and enjoy! ;-)
    Doesn't happen HERE though, does it! Oh no! It's played like staccato...
    Dood dood dood , dood dood dood etc. Distinct gaps between each note, No overlap. None at all.
    So why do the notes join and overlap on every other recorded and live version, yet not here?
    "The answer my friend, is blowin' in the wind..."
    Those notes, as Gary has said countless times, he played on a Minimoog, which you can see on all the videos.
    A Minimoog is monophonic. It only plays one note at a time. If you press a key for a second note, the first note cuts off instantly. Cool!
    So how and why DON'T they cut each other off on the original album recording?
    Easy - because the Minimoog sound was passed straight through a reverb (processor) which prolonged each note/sound, EVEN after you release the pressed key. Thereby - to our ears - effectively overlapping each sound to the Naa-aa Naa-aa Naa-aaaaa we're used to.
    On 00:16:08 Me! I Disconnect From You, you can hear the keyboardist play each note straight into each other, so they sound continuous-ish and we don't hear the gaps.
    So let's go back and listen once again to this recording from the beginning to the end. Peacefully. We're hearing the music as it was actually played by the musicians at the time. NOT how it sounded after the effects have been added on ... blah, blah.
    We may never hear something like this again!
    It's probably gonna disappoint a lot of people simply because it doesn't sound 'right'. It could easily disappoint fan-musicians.
    There are two exceptions I can hear:
    1) Gary's guitar is heavily processed with direct foot pedals before it reaches the mixing desk.
    2) The eerie background synthesizer either has built-in on-board effects, or direct reverb effect before the mixing desk.
    That"s cool.
    Apologies if it's a boring insight,
    and Enjoy Ian's videos

    • @WAZA___
      @WAZA___ 3 года назад +1

      @Ian The minimoog was not used on the studio version of AFE. A roland synth and polymoog was used.

    • @ianmacauley4996
      @ianmacauley4996 3 года назад +1

      Sorry, Waza, You're just plain wrong, mate! The Studio AFE was recorded using a (hired) Minimoog and Polymoog. There are many GN interviews where he describes that recording in detail, and even more well-researched and sourced professional articles describing it.
      Although he started it on a Minimoog, he says in more recent interviews he recorded it with the Polymoog in one-finger mode. I started playing on an EMS Synthi VCS3 and a Minimoog at Uni in mid 1973. That AFE sound is 100% recognisable as a then Mini/Poly-moog. There was no other normally available synth back then with that unmistakable bass, oscillator stack, and that unmistakable filter on that AFE lead sound.
      And there were NO easily commercially available Roland Synths back in Jan '79 that could make THAT sound - if ever!
      Stay Safe, fella! ;- )

      @@JamesWilliams-ki7im i do still have the cassette, but it's not the original stephen roper one. I would guess a second or third generation. The gap in riwv was due to the cassette being turned over. Unfortunately most of the bootlegs from that tour had gaps in that song. I thought it would be worth remixing that part to get a 'complete' version
