For the record, the people in the audience absolutely knew they attended a historic moment. I was pretty young, 9th grade. When this aired on mtv it was all most of us talked about.
just some music trivia for you Gen Z kids, the guitar (1959 Martin D-18E) that Kurt is holding in his hand became the World's Most Expensive Guitar to ever be sold at an Auction, it sold for 6 MIL dollars. Kurt also holds the recod for the 2nd most highest price a guitar was ever sold at an auction, his famous 1969 Fender Mustang sold for 4.5 MIL dollars. Kurt also holds the record for the highest price ever paid for a rock n roll piece of clothing. The grey cardigan that he is wearing on the UNplugged album sold for $333,400 in 2019.
Man Who Sold the World was on the radio constantly when this came out. I always cranked it when it came on. I knew it was Bowie, but didn't hear the Bowie version until many years later-no RUclips back then.
Another great Nirvana show to check out is Live at the Paramount. its not as famous as their MTV Unplugged gig, but honestly, it’s my favorite. the setlist is awesome, covering tracks from all three albums, and the cinematography is super cool. plus, their Paramount performance is so tight and full of energy that I actually prefer a few of the live versions of their songs from this show over the studio ones. there are even 4k versions on youtube, so you can really feel like you're there!
For pennyroyal tea, Kurt himself said that he wished this version of it would’ve been the one on in utero. Also, you guys should really check out The New Abnormal by The Strokes. If you like Nirvana (and also Is This It) you’d love this album
Another epic reaction to an amazing band/album/performance. You guys really are picking some brilliant music to open your minds ears and souls. The whole 90s grunge thing is 🔥 and I've seen your prog reactions to tool and pink floyd, can't wait for you guys to try some rush. Especially 2112 & moving pictures. You'll be opened up to yet another portal of music and growth. Keep up the epic work guys, appreciate you both. From some random middle aged dad in England ❤
Thanks guys for a great reaction ill never forget when this premiered on mtv when it was still music...i knew i was witnessing history RIP kurt❤my fav song on this set is where did u sleep last night allgreat tho😊
I don’t think mtv would let us play that. The person on the cello is Lori Golston. IMO she’s the most under appreciated person who’s played with Nirvana. She adds so much and she’s an amazing cellist Also you guys should check on System of a Down’s self titled. If you love Nirvana you’d also love them!
Love seeing you guys discover this era. Gotta do these soon- Soundgarden- "Badmotorfinger" (it's their heaviest IMO) Temple of the Dog AiC- Unplugged AiC- Tripod (self titled) AiC- Sap (because why not?)
Pearl Jam's Unplugged is goated!! And of course AIC Unplugged is heart-wrenching. might as well complete the Grunge Unplugged set; its all a masterclass in musical awesomeness.
You guys reaction is the exact reaction we had watching it being broadcast live. We thought it would be a drug-addled mess, no one expected it to be this amazing. Nirvana went into the media stratosphere after this. They took the whole world by surprise.
New Metal basically means they play heavy metal instruments but they also often have a turntable DJ and half rap/half singing lyrics. Notable bands are Limp Bizkit, Korn, Linkin Park, etc. Old Metal is the pioneers of the genre aka Black Sabbath Iron Maiden, etc..., then you have hair metal, and thrash metal, death metal, its go so many sub genre it's impossible to remember them all and they all kind of bleed over.
Such an amazing performance, his voice was incredible. Someone mentioned the jaw movement, but from what I heard he always did that as his own sort of metronome to keep his own song timing
I've seen this show a hundred times (the unplugged, not this reaction) and I never noticed Dave playing bass on "Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam" before.
“I was simply blown away when I found that Kurt Cobain liked my work, and have always wanted to talk to him about his reasons for covering ‘The Man Who Sold the World’” and that it was a good straight forward rendition and sounded somehow very honest. It would have been nice to have worked with him, but just talking with him would have been real cool.” -David Bowie
You guys should check out the first album from Foo Fighters to see Dave in action. He played all the instruments, by the way, congrats for the channel it's awsome... Cheers from Brazil!!
You guys would love Alice in Chain's, Stone Temple Pilots, and Pearl Jam unplugged. These guys really set the bar and showed people these guys were professionals at their craft.
Nirvana easily the best, best vocal performance ever, some of the greatest covers of all time, and the story behind it. PJ is just their 1st album in acoustic and AIC had layne barely able to sing. Theres a reason why Nirvana Unplugged is hailed as one of the greatest live albums of all time, the others arent. Where did you sleep last night + Man who sold the world are 2 of the best cover songs of all time
Kurt had an addiction to cough medicine from early on which stayed with him his whole life. It was caused by digestive issues which plagued him for years. Ultimately, he also became addicted to heroin...you know how that ends!
I love you guy’s videos, it’s so cool watching people experience the music I’ve loved my whole life for the first time. You should totally check out Rage Against the Machine’s first album which is self-titled. It’s certainly one of if not the best hard rock album of all time
"It might be nice to eventually start playing acoustic guitars and be thought of as a singer and a songwriter rather than a grunge rocker, because then I might be able to take advantage of that when I'm older and sit down and play acoustic guitar like Johnny Cash or something and it won't it won't be a big joke" Didn't sound like a man planning to leave to me. #Justiceforkurt
Side note ... Mark Lanegan does Where Did you Sleep Last Night as well .... Very cool version and prefer that one. Apparently he and Kurt would listen to old Ledbetter songs together....
Great reaction guys! I have to second the suggestion to watch Nirvana - Live at the Paramount (Oct. 31, 1991) Shot brilliantly on film and looks/sounds so good!
Nu-Metal= A hodge podge of everything. Tuned down guitars, funk, jazz , grunge, arena rock ,hip hop beat, influeces some with, others without a DJ. Forfatherd by bads such as Faith No More, Janes Addiction , Primus, Chilli Peppers
Chronologically, I'd like you to cover the Gothenburg melodic death metal scene which was happening around the same time as the Grunge scene, a little later. Maybe ease into it with mid to late 00s metalcore.
I've seen a couple people say it but you guys should watch the Montage of Heck documentary about Kurt's life. It's really well done, artistic, and visually beautiful.
I think you might have missed Polly and On a Plain unless they got cut… I think it’s on the Unplugged DVD where there’s a look back on the show from people who were there as fans and working at MTV, pretty good watch. Best part was when they got wind that Nirvana was bringing out guests they all thought Vedder or someone big and when they found out it was the Meat Puppets they were all like “who the fuck are the Meat Puppets??”
I'd go either hip hop or a 90s alt/rock marathon. You can reasonably pull everything from Oasis to Tool into that bucket w Smashing Pumpkins and dare I say STP since they were never really a 'grunge' band.
he was withdrawing like a mfer before the show and almost didn't make the stage.. and they gave him something before the show to get him through the show.
Eventually do a Doom Metal and/or Stoner Metal marathon for sure. Bands like Sleep, Electric Wizard, YOB, Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, Elder, Windhand, Pallbearer, etc. If you love Black Sabbath, these bands really scratch an itch.
I watched a doco with his friends saying he'd shot up a couple hours beforehand, so he was on the tail end of one here apparently. He definitely seems like he has opiates in his system, the drawl/slow speech etc.
Not going to lie, a little disappointed you guys didn't react to any Mudhoney albums in your "grunge" reactions yet. They're one of the Seattle bands that really epitomised grunge ... them and Tad. Mudhoney's 1992 album "Piece of Cake" is peak grunge and probably their most accessible album but work backwards from there 'cos there are some absolute gems on those earlier albums.
AIC Unplugged for our next live stream!
Do vulgar Display of Power
Do Appetite for destruction
Do Primus Sailing the seas of cheese or Brown Album
@@BillyBongOh I hard agree with Vulgar Display of Power
@@BillyBongI second all 3!
DO NIRVANA LIVE AT PARAMOUNT FOR THE NEXT NEXT ONE PLEASSE
Do Tago Mago by can. Don’t listen to “peking O” tho it’s kinda shit lol. Every other track on there is massively influential and underrated! 🔥
Kurt lived a quarter of a lifetime, but this performance is immortal.
108 is a long life
Who said you're supposed to live until you lose your mind?
Time is a flat circle
@@Blisteryn I'm pretty sure he did lose his mind lmao
For the record, the people in the audience absolutely knew they attended a historic moment. I was pretty young, 9th grade. When this aired on mtv it was all most of us talked about.
“The guy on the drums is locked in”. 😂 You have no idea.
Pretty sure they know
@@shenanigans3710 i think hes talking about how dave had to try REAALLY hard to not hit the drums hard
The reason Kurt always moved his jaw when he was playing was not because he was on drugs… he did that to keep tempo when playing 👍🏼
Came here to comment this
He had stomach problems and just on benzodiazepines I think
Dave's doing kick and high-hat with his feet, playing bass, and singing at the same time.

Super mad props to whoever donated for Silverchair Frogstomp. They were/are a super important band for the 90s.
Silverchair was my junior high early high school years! My all time favorite band
Dude! Their Neon Ballroom album is a masterpiece
@@j.robinson8823 it was great. But I love Frogstomp and Freakshow equally. Many great tracks on all 3 albums
yes bro i love silverchair, i hope they react to frogstomp sometime

In the aftermath of his death people realized that the design of this set looked like a funeral
So glad you guys have grown as a channel to the point where you can livestream. I tuned in and had a blast
As long as y'all don't get hit too hard by youtube, y'all have absolute gold here imo.
the boy on the left increasingly dresses more grunge
It’s like Kurt was playing at his own memorial.

I ❤️ AiC, and their Unplugged is so very special, but PJ was amazing. What a performance!
For sure.
STPs Unplugged is great as well!
Queensrÿche unplugged is incredible and overlooked
This album was so iconic because it was like a new studio album but performed live.
I mean, mostly a cover album. Not anything new on it, still my fav acoustic album ever.
It also came out after cobain died

You should check out You Know You're Right if you haven't yet. It's the very last song Nirvana released, years after Kurt's death.
15:31 he can make mistakes but they just make the songs better
I would also suggest that you check out another MTV performance of theirs called Live And Loud.

Beastie Boys marathon 😎
After hearing this album I went and bought The Vaselines and The Meat Puppets II.

Yall need to listen to Clutch -Elephant Riders its another great band from the 90s. You two would love them
Most iconic episode yet!
I remember watching this when it first came on. MTV... I cried

Nu metal is metal that incorporates elements from other genres, like rap and funk.
You guys need to discover Portishead. And your life will change forever.
Dave was actually not supposed to play for the unplugged, they were about to go without drums for this but it was changed last min
amazing and good band to listen nirvana
Kurt had an addiction to cough medicine from early on which stayed with him his whole life. It was caused by digestive issues which plagued him for years. Ultimately, he also became addicted to heroin...you know how that ends!
Portishead - Dummy (trip-hop) ... Blind Melon - Soup (folky alt rock) ... Toadies - Rubberneck (southern alt rock)
Great suggestions. Toadies: Rubberneck incredible album!
