Tensions rise in the Indo-Pacific region as China continues to ramp up its military presence around Taiwan. As per Taiwan's defence ministry, 66 Chinese aircraft have been detected around the island in the biggest sortie of the year. This comes as Beijing conducts exercises in the nearby waters. The Chinese military exercises coincide with the 2024 NATO summit in Washington, where a draft communique says China has become a decisive enabler of Russia's war effort in Ukraine and continues to pose systemic challenges to Europe and its security. In recent months, China has ramped up its military presence around Taiwan. Beijing claims the self-ruled island as part of its territory.
