Aiden did a great job. I love this movie. I dont think it ever received the recognition it deserved. For those that dont know the movie, it is called the song catcher.
Everyone is not blessed with a perfect singing voice and I am glad of it. People sing to express their feelings and a perfect pitch is not necessary. I think this is beautiful.
When the Mountains Cry A lie that comes on a poison thorn,it has roots all dirty and torn! Youg'ens playen as the black crow flies,Mama's weapin hear the Montains cry! There was another, A wild dark flower, cold was her heart, in its darkest hour. Tears on the ground where her love did die,Neith the bloody moon, hear the mountains cry Oh dig his grave narrow and deep,Lay a jug of whisky by his thursty feet And lay two pennies on his Rovin eyes Two Woeman Whaile as the mountains cry
This touch my soul when I first saw that many years ago and here I am all these years later still looking and searching to hear these beautiful songs from this beautiful movie
This song was written by who is colloquially known as Janis Joplin during a Time Travel Mission in the Appalacian Mountains. We were breaking up Coal MIner Unions for a TIme Corporation connected to the Coal/Oil industry. Thank you Janis for another amazing timeless tune you receive no credit for.
To the posters who criticize this version of this song ... Have you seen The Songcatcher? This version is perfect for its context. The voice sounds strained which makes it perfect to express the strains and sadness of loss that comes with the events in the movie that lead up to this moment.
I love this movie so much, and have watched it more than 20+ times and have to buy it. And this song - captivating. I'm from the Northeast, and for the most part, we're faster paced here, and sort of combative. I've never taken to a movie as much as I have the Songcatcher. I wish there was a Part 2, and 3 and 4 . ...
I assume this is Aidan Quinn. I was disappointed this wasn't on the album because, like tm13tube, I think it doesn't matter that he doesn't have much of a voice as this version fitted perfectly in the movie, which was what the point of it was. This is a fantastic movie, incredibly moving, evocative of a time and place, very sad and yet life-affirming. And this was one of the most moving songs in it.
It's strange because there was no real soundtrack available for this movie... It's been put together by users that really wanted to show case the talent behind it all....
@ballsnotrequired - I had to reply to my comment due to utube error. You're right, all I could find were covers by other utube users. What is more strange is I'm born and raised in the Northeast urban jungle as we call it and this movie and all the music blew me away. I don't recall how I found it, probably browsing Cablevision or the worse cable company on earth beside Verizon, is Comcast, before they got too damn greedy and I removed cable entirely. So I bought the DVD and watched it, idk maybe 20 times so far 😊 Take care.
The fact that his voice or rendering, isn't perfect is the whole point, that so many miss! Those who can only play strictly by reading music only, tend to be that way. All technical & unable to add or express their own emotional brand onto a song, where others can hear it. Music readers are often very different types of players and don't understand those who can't read music, or how we can play at all.
Lyrics A lilac grows, on a poison thorn, It has roots, dirty and torn. Youngins’ a playin’ as the black crow flies, Mama’s weepin’, when the mountains cry. There was another, a wild dirt flower, Cold was her heart and dark as dire. Tears on the ground, as her love did die. Neath’ the bloody moon, when the mountains cry. Oh dig his grave, oh dig his grave, A narrow and deep, a narraow and deep, Set a jug of whiskey, by his thirstin’ feet, And lay 2 pennies on his roamin’ eyes, Two women wailing, When the mountains cry. Oh the wind grows weary, and the willows sigh… Rivers of sorrow, when the mountains cry Oh the wind grows weary, and the willows sigh… Rivers of Sorrow, When the mountains cry. Rivers of Sorrow, When the mountains cry. If you haven’t seen The Songcatcher, I highly recommend it.
2:30 I've never seen this movie but I tend to analyze videos and movies alot. The woman on the left didn't want the woman on the left to go, judging by the way she was almost rapid eating she was nervous/anxious to asking her to, "stay with (me), we need another teacher". Followed by a slight sigh as if she already knew her attempt to coax her to stay was futile. "I didn't think you would", followed by another anxious bite. "Hmph". The woman on the right recognizes her inner frustrations/sadness and calmly says, " I shall miss you"., followed by an immediate hug to break the tension and express her love, as it will likely be the last time she sees her. The woman on the left caught of guard with a surprised gasp, taken in by the hug, and instantly embracing it. *Squeezes tightly* "I will miss you, too" I love it!
I have searched the net for the lyrics to this song, and noones sure, but I,ve heard this song enough and being from Ports., Ohio, an Appalachain, I can understand all the lyrics!, but it is a beautiful song! you can feel the sadness!
@avorozheev IF im not mistaken it was written for the movie and no one has recorded it or can for that matter. I may be totally wrong but seems like i read that somewhere.
Boo I want to have the entire music ology of this entire movie at my disposal I want to hear every single song I heard in this movie from those people at my fingertips
Thats awesome, i love the old country! :D i was raised in MI but i married a boy from pineville, its sad how these days its eat up with drugs though :[ Still its a beautiful place, just amazing views everywhere you look. :]
Madam, With utmost respect and honor. Being well traveled and observant I would offer that there are few if any places more beautiful than the mountains of NorthWest North Carolina. The mountains cry if you can listen. Absolutely beautiful. Listen.
A beautifully haunting melody. The movie is wonderful. “The Song Catcher” Unfortunately on my CD Aidan Quinn is not singing this song. What a disappointment.
Because they did not do a soundtrack for this musical. It's crazy, isn't it? It's absolutely disgusting because it is so worth it. Every song I have put together my own cd. My name, it was hard it was so hard... What am I favorite is Pat carroll singing when I was a single girl....
Our culture has become so warped and spoiled by technology that demands that all artists be perfectly on pitch all the time. If you hear the old recordings, such as Dogg Boggs and others, none of them were "good" singers by our standards. If you remember, none of the people in the mountains were professionally trained in the traditional sense. They sang how they sang, and they were appreciated for it. The ruggedness and imperfection is what make it beautiful.
@ferociousgumby I don't think songs like this (especially sung over this type of incident) are so much about pitch as they are about the emotion in the voice, and the reaction they invoke in those listening. Quinn puts some decent emotion into this scene.
I don't know if "butcher's" is quite accurate, but I do think the off-key version is for effect. You can tell that A.Q. can sing well, he's just not. You have to consider that in early America, song was a language & entertainment. Some of the best bluegrass is sung by non-professionals with unrefined voices, but it is just that haunting, breaking tone that IS bluegrass. Bluegrass by it's very nature is earthy and was never meant to be songs that "put on airs" or as properly said "aires".
It's an absolute tragedy insanely wrong that the original scores from this movie was never put into true format and available to the public it is a crying shame something should be done
Michael Craig Yes in Ireland funerals are a n experience Lifestyle is different but something about these people attracts me and makes me want to learn more
@stillwaterguy04 I understand your point about it not being sung well. However, I think the director was trying to show how even those with bad singing voices still knew their traditional mountain music and played/sung it to mourn. I'm not trying to be an asshole.
@rw93003 Fuck, you are right! It does, although his teeth are not nearly as bad as that lead singer in the Pogues. That one seriously needed a goddamn dentist!
True about the singing. The Appalachian singers had sometimes primitive-sounding voices, but they were always on pitch! Going flat is excruciating. Get someone else to sing it! Pull Pete Seeger out of retirement or something..
Singing abilities is not nearly as important as the under current of emotion, as stated above, and Quinn does I think a respectable job, especially for a "non-singer." It's all about the feelings and the lyrics. A simple voice for a simple song for simple people.
Thank you so much for this. I have looked lots of places to find it and couldn't. I am pleased to find that Aidan Quinn sings this version. I thought so but you never know. He could sing 'Beautiful Fly on the Wall' to me and I would love it!
Josef Hofmann there's no one cultural representative of America. it’s too vast and complex to be united culturally like some other countries - as far as i can see the only unity is in the shared themes of freedom and such; ideological stuff. culturally, you should stick to regionalism
Philip Ians that’s honestly the mistake I think a lot of non Americans make about this country. The assumption is of a homogenous whole, where really it’s a collective of different cultures united under one overarching umbrella
Aiden did a great job. I love this movie. I dont think it ever received the recognition it deserved. For those that dont know the movie, it is called the song catcher.
It's a great movie
I live where a lot of this movie was filmed and represents. It makes me so proud of my heritage. ❤
nice movie.i loved the songs and the storyline is good
Agreed
Love this movie. Have a copy on my movie shelf.
Everyone is not blessed with a perfect singing voice and I am glad of it. People sing to express their feelings and a perfect pitch is not necessary. I think this is beautiful.
Lisa C i agree
as long as it cone from the soul it'd always beautiful
Me too
Same
I don't think it's bad at all. I've heard worse!! This Music comes from the Heart and always tells a Story.
I think Aiden Quinn did a lovely job singing this. Pure and simple. Could listen to it over and over.
Exactly. Especially when you realize he comes from a culture where everyone was expected to be able to sing a song or two.
I found his voice to be perfect for the time and song. He really captured the mood of the mountains, the people, and the culture.
I live in the mtns of WNC. These are the songs of the people, singing from their heart. The music is felt, not just heard
Possibly the saddest lament I’ve heard in a long time mainly how it’s just a voice and a guitar. Never forgot it.
Loved the movie and the mountain music., I was born and raised in the Ky/TN mountains. Could relate to the movie. Loved Aiden Quinn's voice .
This is the culture America should be exporting around the world.
Give that country and that whiskey voice just tell me you played from the fuckin heart. Their was a rose tatto

This whole time I thought it was “ a lilac comes...” 😆
This was an intensely beautiful movie! EXCELLENT song as well..
This touch my soul when I first saw that many years ago and here I am all these years later still looking and searching to hear these beautiful songs from this beautiful movie
This has become my new, favorite song. It is so hauntingly beautiful.
I honestly love how Aiden Quinn sings this song
Aidan Quinn rocked this song and movie wish I had been back in the old days wonderful voice

this song was written for this movie! and sang first by the guy singing! most ppl don't know this!
millieo Do you basely but then with them but I am fucking wrong or you don’t
um...what?
There is nothing wrong with his voice. It is mournful. One would feel mournful if they had to sing at a loved one's funeral.
I love this movie so much, and have watched it more than 20+ times and have to buy it. And this song - captivating. Now I know how I come upon Graves in the oddest places on sides of hills and hill tops here in the Appalachian
I want this played at my wake...
I think that fella did a fine job you got a nice lonesome voice
Aiden Quinn.....😊
Great movie. Great song that fits the movie.
I like the way which Aidan Quinn sings this song. I'm sure that other artist sing it just as well or maybe better, but this version is fine.
Thank you, Anton, for taking interest in the music of my homeland as well as that of so many other lands.
really liked this song in the movie.
It just doesn't get much better than this!
That was awesome. I'll have to see the movie now.
@ferociousgumby Primitive voice goes with the mountain song. They are one and the same. Beautiful.
I assume this is Aidan Quinn. I was disappointed this wasn't on the album because, like tm13tube, I think it doesn't matter that he doesn't have much of a voice as this version fitted perfectly in the movie, which was what the point of it was. Thank you (evocative). I saw this movie for the first time this week and I couldn't put a word to what it was! Buying the soundtrack this week.
Kentucky is my heart.
Mine too
A beautiful sad song. I love it !
so true sis
love this love this movie
DAMN GOOD song in my book.
I want this played at my wake :-)
Love to hear Jack White sing this song!!!!
Levon Helm should have done this!
very nice...lovely yet melancholic
Thank you for allowing me to be able to hear this song again
I'd pay $15 bucks to buy this one song with Aidan Quinn singing it the exact same way he does in the movie but without the background movie audio.
It's strange because there was no real soundtrack available for this movie... It's been put together by users that really wanted to show case the talent behind it all....

Sounds very like "Dirty Old Town" by The Dubliners
Still one of my favorites 😍🥰

Reminds me of a song by The Pogoues, "Dirty, Old Town."
The Appalachians are the most beautiful place on the entire East Coast.
Madam,
With utmost respect and honor. Being well traveled and observant I would offer that there are few if any places more beautiful than the mountains of NorthWest North Carolina. The mountains cry if you can listen.
Absolutely beautiful. Listen.
Exactly right! Someone wrote on another site that her voice sounded like "a goat". That person obviously isn't open to any different kinds of music.
A beautifully haunting melody. The movie is wonderful. “The Song Catcher” Unfortunately on my CD Aidan Quinn is not singing this song. What a disappointment.

when I pass I won't this played at my funeral

Id rather hear him sing than some of that pop bubble gum crap they pass off as music these days.
Yeah, I agree. It sounded alright to me.
one year later....
Sounds like "Dirty Old Town" by the Pogues to me
when they take it down it will be reposted
@stillwaterguy04 Damned copyright police, I love this song ;) And who sings this song in original?
No perfect pitch needed all soul
Do they still have old time funerals like this, and live like this in the Applachians?
Michael Craig Yes in Ireland funerals are a n experience Lifestyle is different but something about these people attracts me and makes me want to learn more
Yes, we do

Now, is this not awesome or what? (and I hate extreme language)
