Will never forget our trip to Monument Valley. We drove from Las Vegas, through Page and arrived about 11pm. Parked up at the View Hotel and checked into our Cabin. Wow! What a sky. What a dawn. Although we didn't make it to Hunts Messa we did do a horseback tour with a Navajo Guide. Every western movie dream of a boy from Belfast. Unbelievable. Great video as always...
Another cracking video, full of interest, humour and brilliant advice and guidance. On my 'must watch' list every month. I was fortunate to visit Hunts Mesa in April 2023 with these folk and to say it was simply stunning would be an understatement. We had similar conditions and managed to get some amazing images. The Navajo guides are brilliant and make sure you get to these incredible locations in safety. The drive in and out was epic! Highly recommended.
As someone who is a practiced 'panner' of many years I would also add that you should keep the panning movement going after the shutter has been fired. Great show as always.
Got to agree with some of the other comments here. This is the best one you’ve done. That monument valley piece was epic. Great cinematography, superb story, superb light and the backing music you chose for the piece was perfect! Those trucks are impressive too.
Another great and informative show. Not all the segments fall in my bracket of photography but I love watching them anyhow. Gives me the opportunity to learn and to watch experts in their files show off their knowledge. Keep up the jars work.
Another great show and the trip to Monument Valley was amazing. Thank you Marcus, for sharing such a breathtaking place, while once again you were busy with one of your groups.
That Huntsmesser part was awesome. Just wish there would have been an astrophotography section in this Bortle 1 domain. I’d love to come with next time!
Hi Max. We are doing less and less astro stuff on our trips as it’s becoming increasingly specialist and if you’re also doing a full itinerary during the day, it tires people out too much. Hunts Mesa is not actually that good for it anyway. You really want to be down on the valley floor for that, rather than up on a Mesa. Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed the show.
You have outdone yourselves, and that is saying something. And you are right about the Colorado Plateau - not just Monument Valley, the entire area it is absolutely spectacular. I think there must be similar places in North Africa and Central Asia. Probably Australia and South America, too, but the Southwest US is certainly more accessible for many of us. Thanks for another amazing show.
Hi Team: As always the production value of your stories is exceptional. I really enjoyed the story of Hunts Mesa. The continuing story of photographing the National Parks is really getting interesting. I commend the guys on the physical toll it must have taken for this challenge. Keep well . . . Cheers, Keith (Canada)
Beautiful is not sufficient to describe today’s scenes and images. This was absolutely moving, it touches the soul and reminds us of how we are connected to nature and this Earth. Thank you for sharing and making us feel like we were there with you 🤍🌄📷
I always found it easiest for panning to be at 90° to the road, and preferably on the inside of a smooth radius curve. This means perspective on the vehicle doesn’t change much.
Another excellent POL. Thank you. A small point for Marcus. Mesa is pronounced maysa. And, in Monument Valley, the other tall feature is called a butte, pronounced buoot, not butt. A simplified definition is that buttes have smaller diameters than mesas. And the next time you go, check out Goulding’s Lodge and the old Goulding’s Trading Post. A great place to stay or just eat and lots of history. It is because of Harry Goulding that so many movies were made in Monument Valley, especially providing periodic jobs and income for the Navajos during the Great Depression. 😊
Cheers Stuart. You’re right about the pronunciation - I’ve just got into a bad habit of saying it how I say it. With regards to Gouldings - we have stayed there in the past (also at The View) and now stay at neither as there are better options in the area. We’ve toured most of the area over the years, so have finally narrowed down the good bits and the not so good. Thanks for watching as always. (Marcus)
What a fantastic location Hunt’s Mesa looks. I drove and camped the White Rim Trail and had amazing views from Murphys Campground that were almost as remarkable as Hunts but in hindsight were sub par. What is the opening and closing location with the rock stack and ocean/sea to the left?
Hunt's Mesa is home to several of my favorite photographs. Unfortunately, none of them are mine. Definitely not for the budget photographer and the jostling involved in the ascent is notorious. Great show.
I've yet to make it to Monument Valley and I head to the southwest US every spring. Hunt's Mesa, eh? Very cool. I like that panning piece too, very good. I was at a racetrack two weeks ago it went pretty well, but made a huge rookie mistake by forgetting an ND. At least the conditions were forgiving and not overly bright. Banana Fried Chicken Park is on my route in August, haha! Great show as always, thank you!
I watched the Hunt's Mesa section several times, just loved the view. Always been intrigued by the RZ67, and would love a tutorial on hold to get the film to digital for use in computer software.
Hi Patrick. Scanning large negs is pretty easy and can be done with a digital camera and a macro lens. We have done features about it in the past but will probably revisit the topic in the future as options are always evolving.
Hi Ken. Yes the moon shot is still active but there are only 1 or two chances per year to get it. Last year the only chance had the perfect conditions but I was away in Italy! So, I’ll keep trying. Thanks for watching. All the best
If you know where the subject is going to be (such as is the case of a car on a road) then the best thing is to pre-focus in manual focus. Typically you will be using f/11 or f/16, so the depth of field will be sufficient to compensate for any minor distance discrepancies. Hope this helps.
It hasn’t been renamed. The Park Authority are choosing to use the original Welsh title Bannau Brycheiniog as the official name. I find using original names of places very interesting add often insightful. Lots of people will still visit the Beacons as the well known English version.
thoroughly enjoyed the piece about Monument Valley. A little disappointed that the section on 5x4 photography was soooo short, thought Marcus could have covered a bit more about camera movements specific to the 5x4 or even talked about bellows factor for ths piece, instead he just took a picture of a door.
Hi Malcolm. Thanks for taking the time to comment. To address your points, there was no bellows extension required for this shot and as I said in the feature, I chose not to apply camera movements (other than a hint of lens fall) as they weren’t necessary. It’s therefore not easy to explain something I am not doing - although I did explain why I wasn’t applying swing. We’ve done features about lens movements in the past and we’ll certainly do it again in the future, so keep watching. All the best
The names haven't been changed merely reverted to their original Welsh name Hence Eryri and Bannau Brycheiniog. Plenty of advice online as to how to pronouncethese words correctly.
See the view isn't quite the best in the planet. It's all a matter of what you're used to. I bet people from there would go to Scotland and have their minds blown at the views. I'm originally from Scotland and moved to Vancouver Canada back in '06. The views from around here that are all taller than Ben Nevis, the start of the Canadian Rockies would blow most peoples mind, and they still do for me. But it's like you become so used to a view right on your doorstep that you start taking it for granted. I was recently on a little train ride from France to Italy that cut through Switzerland, as it came out of a tunnel, beautiful mountains, amazing views... everyone on the train piled over to my side and was snapping pictures, I removed my headphones, looked up from what I was watching on the tablet and thought, oh yeah cool.. looks kinda like back home. Then went back to what I was watching. I guess I really have no point here other than, best view in the world? I dunno mang.. it's all to do with what you're used to. I've had people over here tell me how unbelievably amazing Scotland was on their two week visit and how they can't understand why I'd EVER leave there for Vancouver. Yet, they've never travelled more than 30minutes outside of the city here.
OK, so I'm a POOS, because I really enjoy the show. If I was to have one comment, it is that the "analogue affairs" stuff is far too dominating for my taste. I get that Marcus is a dominant personality and has his own agenda, but I do question how many people have any interest whatsoever in analogue photography. For my part, it leave me stone cold. I simply don't see the point any more. The rest of it leaves me open-mouthed ... the trip to Monument Valley literally had me in tears. Given my rather advanced years, will I ever get to experience anything like that?
Hi Chris. We appreciate that film photography isn’t for everyone, but as we say in the programme - there’s plenty of generic photo info in there which can be applied to digital. But to answer your question, according to the analytics which we get, Analogue Affairs holds the audience better than any other part of the show. There are plenty of people out there who are interested in it, but we put it at the end of each show so that if you’re not interested then it’s easy to turn off. Glad you enjoyed the rest of the show. We appreciate your feedback and support.
@@PhotographyOnline Although not currently a film shooter, I like the segment. Gives me a chance to critique his approach to scenes while learning about how film works. Today, I would have caused the light on that back wall to fall off a bit; it was too bright for my taste, and distracted from the very cool door. Yes, the door was cool. But I like doors anyways. 🤷♀

Bannau Brycheiniog isn't hard to pronounce. Listen to someone pronounce it, online it's easy to find examples, and have a practice. Refering to the name as banana fried chicken is just lazy. You did the same thing with Harrys laboured attempt to pronounce Eryri, when you visited Snowdonia. It's almost as if you had a thing against the Welsh language.

That Hunt's Messa segment was awesome!

seeing James checking focus with a loupe on the back of his digital camera made me chuckle - another great show many thanks
Yes James swears by using a loupe. Personally I don’t get it, as there’s the magnify button for checking sharpness, but each to their own. (Marcus)

Yeah I didn’t do too well with my terminology did I?! (Marcus)

It’s the loo with a view!
Why all the name changes with your parks?
Ask the Welsh.
The names haven't been changed merely reverted to their original Welsh name Hence Eryri and Bannau Brycheiniog. Plenty of advice online as to how to pronouncethese words correctly.
Yep the good old U.K. traffic problem, you can’t plan travel in this country, if you have a time to get to your destination just double it!
Very true. It’s worse once you get south of Manchester but can be a problem anywhere in the summer

In fact it's not a lighthouse OR a windmill. Being on the Norfolk Broads, it's probably a windpump. Yours smartarsedly...
It’s called Thurme windmill, but by it is a drainage pump
@@PhotographyOnline I stand corrected!
