You guys have saved me money after watching this video. So after watching your tips and advice, i looked at your recommendation for FFORDES photgraphic who i never heard of. I was looking for a used A6400 and flipping heck found one totaly awesome price and first time using them i loved the experience. Great advice from Marcus about framing your shot for publication. As a longtime magazine editor I deeply appreciated shooters who composed with the final publication platform in mind. One tip I would suggest is renting gear -- great way to try before buying or when you have a special need such as shooting the Aurora.

Best Utube channel for photographers i've seen... Ever. Many congratulations. 18 minutes in... Filters. I've heard it said that the polarising filter is the only one that can't be simulated in post processing. Despite this. I would like to up the value of graduated filters. I use them very much to reduce the dynamic range of an image and enable a scene to be captured in one shot, rather than having to go the multi image/HDR route. ...Keep up the good work.

Another very good show. The only tip I would add to the "Shooting the Aurora" As mentioned, carry plenty of spare batteries but I would carry them in my jacket or trouser pockets not in the camera bag, thus keeping them warm.

What an incredible coincidence, I picked up a Canon 5DSR for myself just before Xmas for £900. It seems with everyone rushing over to mirrorless, its become the forgotton camera.
Well you got yourself a bargain Simon as they have shot up in value now. Great camera.
Just the action and sound of winding the film brings back memories. I think my right thumb automatically reached up when I first heard it. And I too thought, “well that doesn’t sound right.” Glad it still worked out. Gorgeous shots there.

@@PhotographyOnline It's not a problem. I know that I am growing as a photographer.
In my earlier days with photography I was unsure and could not decide which lenses to buy for both new and used. So I rented them for a weekend and used them to the max. This prevented me from wasting money on the wrong lens. The camera shop I used also took the cost of the rental of the purchase of the lens from the buying price. Please note not all the lenses only from the one that was the same as I purchased.

Marcus I find it very handy to tune the JPEG settings on your camera to see what you can get away with when it comes to clipping of the red channel. It is preaty much the same like shooting with mavic pro in gamma profiles. Contrast and saturation tuned down and you will see clearly what you can recover. Especially when on the landscape profile for JPEG there is a lot more vibrance and contrast in the tone curve and it will affect the judgement of untrained or someone new to photography. We already know out of our head but the others are just about to find out. And aperture priority is FINE once you not set in auto ISO ... Don't be such a scientist 😉😂

Hi Zdenek. Thanks for watching again and for taking the time to comment. We will be doing a feature in the coming months about the pitfalls of using Aperture Priority or other auto or semi auto modes. In the situation which Marcus had at Storr, where there was a large deep shadow area adjecent to a bright highlight area, the last thing you want to be doing is using the camera's meter, as the slightest adjustment to composition will influcnece the exposure - obviously not what you would want. So bypassing the camera's meter by using Manual mode and the histogram as a guide, this gives a consistent exposure where the blacks remain black and the brightest point is calibrated to the upper limit of the sensor's latitude. Of course, you can use AP in any situation, but by doing so you are putting faith in technology which is a very hit and miss affair. Anyway, as we said, we'll be explaining this in an upcoming Essential Camera Skills feature.

For the manual vs AP because you exposing for the highlights as these are the ones you want to meet your optimal exposure levels you are not metering the whole scene, but highlights only. It is the metering mode then you are using more then using manual 😉 anyway it's great you all are canon users... and Kase filters

And absolutely, used is often, maybe usually the smart way to go unless you're stinking rich. Same with cars, actually.
Well over half my kit is used which I have purchased from camera shops or photography forums.
RUclips influencers like this channel will also help push used prices like tge eos 5Div SR. As people will now know it is a great bit of kit just for landscapes.
I would love a R5 as I do sports, wildlife and portraits. As tge eye AF is just bloody amazing !

Marcus' information on the color histogram was very helpful, presented with straightforward simplicity.
I totally agree about the imperceptible light changes at dusk and dawn, and the practice of taking numerous digital exposures as minutes pass.
I have often been surprised at what I find recorded later, that I did not clearly perceive at the time.

Great show again. I've used m.p.b a few times to sell/buy 2nd hand gear and been happy with the price vs hassle free experience. You do have to be careful but there are a couple of grey import camera companies with actual physical offices in the UK (HDEW & Panamoz) that you can buy new gear from for a big reduction on normal prices and that supply you with their own warranties which typical exceed the standard manufacturers warranty. I admit I haven't had to claim on those warranties but I did a lot of online research on both companies and customer reviews over several years were good and I liked that they had physical offices in the UK within driving distance of me. My dealings with both companies were positive. Oh and the cameras I bought from both came with UK plugs and all documentation was in English or the multi-language format. No, I don't work for them nor get a commission from either....alas lol. There are other grey import companies that ship the kit from Hong Kong/Singapore and returns have to go back there - that I didn't want but it's a personal thing.
I have certainly wasted money on tripods and filters. I've binned my graduated filters just too much of a faff for me and unnecessary weight when I can just bracket and not worry that the edge of the graduated part is cutting through my scene. As Nick said it's a personal thing no right/wrong just I've never missed not having ND grads. I'd agree though that a Polariser and 6 stop ND filter would be what I now consider to be my 'go to' filters with the 10 stop the next one I use most. I have a lesser one but use it so rarely I can't even remember what it is!
I liked Marcus' tips for the Storr shoot. I admit I hadn't realised the histogram was based on JPEG.
I can personally recommend Ffordes, I have bought from them for many years and will continue to do so. I get next day delivery in the UK and when I was in China less than 2 weeks and all safely packaged.

A used gear top tip is to look in classified adds in cities that your friends and family live. If you see a great deal, have them buy it and mail it to you or just hold it as a good excuse to visit.

I've used a Nikon 35mm shift lens on a Nikon DSLR with crop sensor bringing it to approx 50 mm. On manual at horizontal I simply took the shot at extreme LHS, middle and extreme RHS. Stitched together into a perfect 3:1 using Microsoft ICE or in ON1. It's my new (and much cheaper) Hasselblad X Pan!
Hi James. Thanks for sharing your method. Do you find that the edges are a bit soft when shifting all the way to the extremes? I have never used the Nikon lens, but the Canon 24mm was quite soft at the edges when shifted to the max.

That piece about saving a few pennies was really excellent. I think too that, too often, we see the person with "all the gear and no idea" - the internet and Facebook groups especially seem to be full of them. You missed out the opportunity to point people to buy 3rd party accessories from the likes of Amazon - many excellent deals to be had there and copious reviews from others to help you make the decision. I recently purchased a carbon fibre tripod for my grand-daughter from Amazon and was amazed at the quality - £44!! Keep up the great work team!

@@PhotographyOnline I understand your position but am personally far happier buying from Amazon than from Ebay, which was mentioned in your piece. I also don't agree that Amazon ruin the photo retail market for the "real" photo shops. All of my major and used equipment is through "real" shops, accessories through Amazon.
We only mentioned EBay in a negative way - cautioning that anything bought on it has no guarantee it is working. So we certainly didn’t endorse it. We just try to encourage people buy equipment from independent retailers who employ sales staff who know what they are talking about, otherwise they’ll become a thing of the past which will be a shame.

Money saving tip - buy and fit a good glass screen protector to your camera. I only started doing this around a year ago and it saved me a small fortune when I dropped my Sony A7R4 onto rocks. The screen protector took the full force of the impact and looked awful, On removing the screen protector I was relieved to find the screen was totally unmarked. I got 3 protectors for around £7 off amazon - one of the best things I have bought for such a cheap price!

My Aurora tip would be to use an iPad, linked to the camera over WiFi. There are three huge advantages. 1, use the iPad to trigger the shot, 2, review the image on the iPad and 3, many settings such as exposure time and ISO can be set without touching the camera. While this takes a moment to set up, there are advantages in many types of photography. I hardly ever see this option mentioned.

One important tip that was missed (well i didn't spot it) in the aurora shooting section was to turn off any form of image stabilisation on the lens, but otherwise superb presentation !!
Hi Graham. Yes you are right that IS should always be turned off when using a tripod (unless it’s super windy), but this isn’t a Astro/Aurora issue, but any photo taken on a tripod. Thanks for mentioning it.

Hi Gary. Welcome on board. The tripod I use is a KingJoy A86 but I very much doubt you will find one in Australia. However, if you do want one, I have a brand new one already in the country, so this will be easy to get to you if required. The head I used is a Manfrotto 322RC2 which they don't make new anymore but there are plenty of used ones around. Another great show and I always pick up some new tips and tricks from the team. I know the team are big advocates of the Kase Filter system and I would like to see one of the team members try and review the Kase Wolverine magnetic filter system. I recently purchased a set. and I am very impressed with their quality and ease of use. I won't abandon my Nisi filter system but the Kase Wolverine is my new favorite travelling companion.
I'm thinking about these to replace my screw-ins.
First photo video that I’ve seen that discusses “dew point” issues...good job. I can go to Mt. Rainier in Washington (the state, not the zoo) and deal with condensation at 6,600’ in August and temps in the high 30’s - low 40’s (Fahrenheit). Thanks!

I wait for this eagerly every month and that first minute alone with Marcus covering off the histogram was worth the wait, but I’m not happy guys, in the preview I saw a camera deliberately dropped onto a rock, arghhh!, I still wake up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night after doing the same thing (not deliberate) to a brand new 6D a couple of years ago on the Beacons! Shudder emoji! 😂

A very good video and well worth watching as quite a few tips to be picked up. One small request I wonder if it is possible to change the noise you use to introduce sections. Great show ! What is the tripod head that Marcus is using on the Kingjoy while shooting the sunrise at The Old Man ? It seems to have a pistol grip and, it appears to have a feature for quickly switching between landscape and portrait mode ? Thanks for your consistently great content. Hi Douglas. Thanks for your question. The grip head is a Manfrotto 322RC2. They no longer makes these but you can often get good used ones from EBay. We have many here if you struggle to find one. Just email us.

If you're new to photography vintage lenses are a cheap way to experiment with different focal lengths and lens types before opting to purchase expensive modern quality lenses. And they tend to hold their price so can often be sold on for the same price they were purchased for.

Hi. We can only feature the cameras that we have. We often use our own cameras which are all Canon. If we had other cameras then we would feature these too, but we can't go and buy one of everything just to keep the balance neutral. We do try to feature other brands where possible though. When shopping for "used" gear, there is a great alternative to actual used items. I use Fuji Shop for Refurbished lenses which are absolutely as new and still save decent money.

Hi, Marcus made a point in his section on shooting early sunrises about the image you see on your rear screen is jpeg, is this common to all cameras? I use a Fuji XT-2, and generally always shoot in raw, so this was news to me. Great program again, especially liked the Aurora setup section. I've never seen the aurora, which is strange as I live in Aberdeen, Scotland, but if I ever do, at least I now know how to set up camera! Thank you all, please keep up the great work.
Hi Bob, yeah the image you see on the screen is JPEG representation of the image you have captured in RAW and is based on settings you have chosen such as white balance, picture style etc. As you will see your RAW files won't look like what you see on the back of the camera once imported and viewed in your RAW processing application.

Just love the series but now confused ? I have a Nikon D7200 + Nikon 35mm1.8 and a Nikon 18-300 3.5-6.3 but now I would like to do some wild life and feel that a 500/600mm would fit the bill. Do I just buy a Sigma 150-600 for example and sell the 18-300. Any advice is more than appreciated. Thanks Mike
Hi Mike,
It obviously depends on how much you're willing to spend. The big prime lenses on offer from Nikon (as well as Sigma) are phenomenal but you will pay much much much more. The Sigma superzooms 150-600mm, and 60-600mm are excellent, and for the everyday user should offer enough quality. For the money those superzooms are great value. My best advice is often, you might be able to spend £4K on a big pro telephoto, but then you can't afford anywhere to go and use it! Hope that helps.

Hi Ed. There is no video head. Do you mean the tripod head? If so, it’s a Manfrotto 322RC2. Hope this helps.

Hi 612. We have nothing against Nikon, but we don't have Nikon cameras. I don't recall us ever saying anything negative about Nikon? All of the technique features we do, we use our own camera equipment, and this happens to be Canon. However, the same technique can be applied to any camera, so the fact that we demonstrate it on Canon cameras doesn't mean you can't do exactly the same with any other brand. Hope that makes sense. Hi Mick. I use a Manfrotto 322RC2 head. They don’t make them new any more but you can usually find many good used ones on eBay. Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for yet another fantastic episode! Out of curiosity, at 3:15 why not remove the guess work about correct exposure and use a custom unity white balance (where each channel uses a relative coefficient of 1) to get the RAW histogram on the back of the camera? With many cameras, a dark frame (or a white frame) could be an excellent approximation.
Hi Come. It wouldn't make any difference to change the white balance as I was shooting in RAW. The white balance only affects the jpeg file which is used for the camera's display. It's the RAW capture which you need to be careful not to blow the highlights on - not the resulting jpeg. White balance only takes place after the RAW capture, so it will make no difference in this regard. Hope that makes sense.

Re-reading my comment, I realize that it is a nerdy confusing mess and that the unity WB won't bring anything to experts like you who know their camera in and out. However, with an unfamiliar camera it can help optimizing the exposure without any risk of clipping. Let me try and clarify what I mean. The unity white balance is a white balance that applies the coefficients (1,1,1,1) to the (R,G,G,B) values from the raw image. This produces a jpeg where the red, green and blue channel are the same as in the RAW image (except for the debayering). If you were using a unity white balance, the channel histogram on the back of the camera would technically become a RAW histogram. From that raw histogram you would know exactly if the raw image is clipped or not (as opposed to guessing from the histogram of a jpeg created with a more traditional WB). With many cameras, creating a unity white balance is very easy: create a custom WB using a dark frame (body cap on or f/32, ISO 100 and 1/4000s in the shades) or a white frame (all channels blown). Of course you would still need to use a reasonable white balance for composition because unity WB is very green. For the red channel, this technique can really make a substantial difference because the WB coefficients for the red channel are often well above twice the green coefficients. This means that in some cases, for the red channel, there can be well over 1 stop of difference between clipping in the jpeg and in the RAW. I hope I didn't only add a layer of confusing nonsense.

Regarding buying used cameras. How many exposures can you accept before you have to consider if it´s worth buying?

@@PhotographyOnline If I remember right you can see somewhere in the camera how many photos you have took in total, how many times you pressed the shutter button and took a picture. If you then look at the total number, is there a limit to each camera when things start to get worn out and may need to be replaced. E.g. if I see that the camera I am going to buy there are 500.000 times when the shutter button is pressed, is that much and is it expensive to fix if parts in a DSLR like the mirror stops working? I guess in a mirrorless camera it is another 50p.
Got it! Most pro spec shutters are engineered to do around 250-300 thousand actuations so you wouldn’t want to buy a camera which was already edging 200,000. Consumer cameras are rated at around 150,000, so you wouldn’t want to get one over 100,000. A shutter can fail at any time though, so it’s always going to be a lottery. Many shutters will last well behind their engineered life.
