Hi Ruth! As a retired eye doc I’m always amazed to see someone like yourself squinting an eye shut when looking through your viewfinder. In general it implies you’re looking through the viewfinder with you’re non dominant eye. Just because you’re right handed doesn’t demand that you use your right eye. Next time you’re shooting, keep both eyes open & alternate the camera before each eye & stay with the eye that’s most comfortable w/o squinting. In the long run you’ll be less fatigued. Happy Shooting😊!
"With you're (sic) non-dominant eye.."? Really? Camera makers (with an eye to the predominant market..) such as Leica almost demand you use your right eye so your nose does not get in the way. I'm strongly left-handed for writing and other fine control (but play football, golf, cricket right handed/footed) and use my right eye for a microscope, all viewfinders and rifle/shotgun sighting while keeping my left eyelid open. At med. school my mentors always encouraged the practise of keeping both eyes open, no matter what.
Best explanation I have heard and seen so far about the differences between shooting in RAW or JPEG. Thanks . When people ask me the difference between RAW and JPEG I tell them , shooting in RAW is like a soup without spices..It's bland and you add the spices when you edit the soup/pictures on your computer, JPEG means the camera edits the spices to the soup/pictures for you .
I only watched the Blackpool bit with Ruth behind the camera, I sometimes get tired of people going on and on about cameras and lenses most which we can't afford to buy so what's the point? Blackpool is a great place to be for a holiday or with a camera, at the moment Blackpool is having a refit, new transport, new hotels, refurbed shops when it's all finished it will look great again, and remember right next door we have Cleverleys and Fleetwood and a really nice shopping centre, when it's not raining the sunsets at Blackpool can be amazing and so can the evening light. Thank you Ruth for taking us there and it was great to see you deving your films I could almost smell the chemicals from here. ps I shall watch the rest of the video when time allows!

I, too, love the freedom of wandering around and finding quirky and gritty street subjects to shoot as a refreshing contrast to my more contemplative landscape photography. You were too harsh on your under pier shot as well - I thought it was great. The video academy series is absolutely invaluable for me, as I am looking to move into submitting stock video after years of only selling stills to Getty images. Superb show as always, team!

My late grandparent,s went to the same B&B, in Blackpool for 37yrs! No Easy Jet back then, yes, some area,s are run down, but a great spot for photography. The pier,s alone are worth taking time over, long exp, B/W, etc,etc.
I was taught videography almost the same as your tutorial - from here to there efficiently with good cutaways helping it all look seamless and logical - no jump cuts. The Thomas Heaton school of 'here's me walking through the land scape showing you stuff'. Its a great start but the good thing about you-tube is there's a myriad of ways to tell a story and to evolve once we have the basics. The rule book is often tossed out the window, disruption is pervasive and jump cuts are de rigueur. But no matter the technique it's still a story...of sorts.

It does if you save it as a jpeg and then work from the saved file - which is exactly what you are doing when you shoot in jpeg in the camera and then work on the file on your computer. It's best not to edit a jpeg.

Another superb Vlog very informative and so well put together, the story making a video was excellent getting to the top of the mountain must of been very hard work but you make it look so easy. Very entertaining and full of useful information.
Thanks for this great episode again. Just one thing about Joe: Joe is rumored to do some of his/her work on raw files as well. Namely the correction of lense aberations. That's not bad at all. Joe allows the lense designers to focus on other goals than they used to before digital. Now they can put more effort on less weight and on more affordable products etc, because Joe can do his/her magic before the raw file or JPEG is stored. I am looking at this from a rather theoretical view point, as I always shoot in raw silver halide grains ;-) And when scanning my negatives, TIFF is the closest thing to raw, which I can get out of my scanner.
Hi Florian. I am not sure about this (so I could be wrong) but I think that all lens corrections are applied with software after the file has been recorded. So it’s basically a command to whichever editor you are using to apply the changes (enabling the command to be undone or ignored). So I am not sure that this is a job for Joe or not.
Sorry I missed the premiere, but it was a lovely day and I had a new (old) lens. Nice to see Ruth getting to do a location shoot for a change, instead of one of the boys. I enjoy giving each image a quick edit in LR, so it's RAW for me. Joe is mostly redundant in my camera.
Really usefull contents for a new learner like me, it will really help me in my Photography journey. I really want to see a video about handheld shooting techniques and handheld focusing techniques for sharp photo and also about composition techniques. ❤️
Another interesting show from the team, particularly the RAW v JPEG section. My Fuji has storage for 2 x SD cards, I've set one to store RAW, the other JPEG, generally only working on the RAW image and, if I'm honest, deleting the JPEG's when I format the cards. I may reconsider this and start to think again about how I set up the camera when shooting as at the moment, I'm only thinking about settings for RAW images, and not considering such elements as WB, etc. Also good to see Blackpool again, a place close to my heart, and obviously good for some street photography! Another excellent production. I thought that the mini-film was excellent, perhaps just lacking a going-through-a-gate-in-slow-motion shot. I've only just realised that Marcus is a dead ringer for former England cricket captain, Michael Atherton.
If shooting JPEG, do not allow the camera to apply contrast/sharpening to the image. Turn the contrast and sharpening to the lowest setting and try and adjust them in post. Some of the latest sharpening software, although very processor and GPU intensive, do a much better job than the camerasonboard computers .
Excellent content as usual. Very interesting about the raw Vs jpeg. I usually only shoot jpeg for one very simple reason. I love perfecting my photography skills. Too me adjusting the camera and getting the settings correct for the photo I want to take is all part of the fun and experience. Yes I have to think about the settings as well as composing a scene, but that is what makes a great photographer. Another reason is, I hate spending hours on a computer having to edit every photo because they don't look right. Just think back to before digital cameras and computers existed, you had to know how to set your camera for each scene in order to get the best shot possible. There was no editing available then, and that is what separated a good photographer from a not so good one. I consider that the same with raw Vs jpeg. A good photographer will use jpeg a not so good photographer or lazy photographer will use raw and rely on software to correct their shortfalls. Being a good photo editor doesn't make you a good photographer it just means you are good at editing. While jpeg is more limited for editing, if you have the shot correct or almost as you want it in the first place it should only need minimal editing if any which can be more than easily done in lightroom or Photoshop. Many may disagree with me, I have no idea, but I have been teaching photography for ages now and always have my students use their cameras set on jpeg only so they are forced to set up their cameras properly and I have been thanked for it many times, as they have really improved their skills and understanding of how a camera works and what settings do what. While there are instances when some photographers may benefit from raw such as for weddings or where an image absolutely must look a certain way that can not be captured direct from the camera otherwise it is jpeg always for me.
Generally if I shoot jpeg - and I love the way Fuji outputs them - I'll save as a Tiff to create a master file do any further work on them in post without further destruction in the edit. Not the latitude and integrity of a RAW file but good if you like jpegs out of camera.
Really enjoyed the episode especially the Raw/JPEG and the video with Dolby. 2 questions is Dolby available for androids? Also since you said our EYEris is equivalent to about f8 Then what is our retinas aprximate EYESO? LOL

As to RAW and jpeg, I just wish Lightroom would support Sony A7IV HEIF 10 bit files. Much better than jpeg. I shoot compressed lossless raw in card 1 and jpeg card 2.
In the article about Raw and JPEG setting in camera, you suggest if setting camera for Raw to shift the contact etc right up. If we do this does it not distort what we think we are actually taking. I know that raw image can be adjusted at processing but surely it would be better to se what we are actually taking. Histogram will guide but using the actual view from back screen In first instance would it be more beneficial so see closer matched image rather than distorted view of high contrast etc.
Hi Colin. At no time did we suggest you increase the contrast. We merely suggested it was an option if you wanted all your photos to look punchy in the back of the camera. Hope that makes sense now.
@@PhotographyOnline I thought the suggestion might cause an illusion that the shot taken might be captured nearer optimism settings than would be if not checking histogram. My comments were based on my wanting to achieve a better idea of what I've captured from the image on the back of the camera. No criticism of the show . I am going to try changing these settings to see what my outcomes on rear screen. I am shooting raw and jpeg which I now realise is a waste of memory as never look at the jpegs. Thanks for the show, it introduces me to lots of fit ideas of opportunities in my photo taking and post processing

Hi Andrew. The route we took is not a marked one, but one we do often as we find it easier than the marked one and the views are better. So there’s no link sadly. If you follow the route from Sligachan to Bruach na Frithe, then it’ll be very similar to the one we take.
Nowadays, film photography often gets a bit glorified while shooting in jpg is sniffed at. Listening to Marcus' explanation of shooting in RAW vs jpg, it got me thinking that the process of shooting in jpg (if done properly and intentionally) is exactly the same as shooting in film as it requires deliberate thinking upfront. What do you think?
Hi Joe. You’re not the guy inside everyone’s camera are you?!! Although it could be argued that the decisions of shooting in jpeg and film could be similar, the end file of a jpeg is compressed and therefore has lost some of the detail. Obviously film doesn’t do that (unless you mess up the processing!).
It’s a sponsored feature Bill, which is related to photography. Adverts are those annoying things which pop up in the middle of the show and often have no interest or relevance to the content of the video. There’s quite a big difference there.
I feel your RAW report was heavily biased towards raw, I use jpg, I have since I did a serious test when I went digital in 2000, though occasionally I store raw on a different card. I have rarely been able to better the jpg result when sitting at my computer. It was inferred that you had to select the jpg criteria before each shot, rubbish, you set it when you get the camera and rarely alter it. If you understand exposure you can almost always avoid raw, and shed loads of external storage. One wildlife photographer recently went on a field trip and took 17,000 images, in RAW, I hate to think how many SD cards he had to use. If you cock up exposure you may be able to recover the image if you use raw, or have something with a range of +-7EV but I prefer to spend time in the field, rather than in a darken room with coffee and valium.
Not sure which video you were watching Mike but it clearly wasn’t ours as we had no debate about it. We did however do a feature to show the pros and cons of each format which many people found helpful.
so you are saying raw is for the kids that can't colour in inside the lines and need to rub stuff out and do it again later and jpeg is for the kids that can pick the right colour crayon and colour in the image neatly the first time?......................... i know, i'm going to hell lol one of the advantages of jpeg is if you shoot action and have an entry level camera with a small buffer and it gets clogged up with raw files, jpegs will keep it clear, good for action in wildlife and sports.
Hope the van didn't get a ticket for being parked in a Disabled Bay for the video shoot! I know it was just to get the Mountains in shot, but even so not good form.

Great inspirational video. It hit home.
My editor, Darktable, doesn’t change the original jpeg, it does nondestructive editing, so the jpeg does not detoriate after several edits.
It does if you save it as a jpeg and then work from the saved file - which is exactly what you are doing when you shoot in jpeg in the camera and then work on the file on your computer. It's best not to edit a jpeg.

If you are recording jpegs as a backup, then you should shoot RAW as a backup instead. Only shoot jpeg if you don’t want to edit your photos.

Its worth noting some editors are non- destructive such as On1 and therefore the jpeg is not touched or degraded with each additional change 😉
But only if you keep them within the system. If you export it then the changes are embedded.

Using PSCC on jpegs, if done properly, is also completely non-destructive.

Hi Barry. Sadly Dolby is not available on Android. It’s currently only on iPhone 12 or later.

Hi Andrew. The route we took is not a marked one, but one we do often as we find it easier than the marked one and the views are better. So there’s no link sadly. If you follow the route from Sligachan to Bruach na Frithe, then it’ll be very similar to the one we take.

Nowadays, film photography often gets a bit glorified while shooting in jpg is sniffed at. Listening to Marcus' explanation of shooting in RAW vs jpg, it got me thinking that the process of shooting in jpg (if done properly and intentionally) is exactly the same as shooting in film as it requires deliberate thinking upfront. What do you think?
Hi Joe. You’re not the guy inside everyone’s camera are you?!! Although it could be argued that the decisions of shooting in jpeg and film could be similar, the end file of a jpeg is compressed and therefore has lost some of the detail. Obviously film doesn’t do that (unless you mess up the processing!).

It’s a sponsored feature Bill, which is related to photography. Adverts are those annoying things which pop up in the middle of the show and often have no interest or relevance to the content of the video. There’s quite a big difference there.

I feel your RAW report was heavily biased towards raw, I use jpg, I have since I did a serious test when I went digital in 2000, though occasionally I store raw on a different card. I have rarely been able to better the jpg result when sitting at my computer. It was inferred that you had to select the jpg criteria before each shot, rubbish, you set it when you get the camera and rarely alter it. If you understand exposure you can almost always avoid raw, and shed loads of external storage. One wildlife photographer recently went on a field trip and took 17,000 images, in RAW, I hate to think how many SD cards he had to use. If you cock up exposure you may be able to recover the image if you use raw, or have something with a range of +-7EV but I prefer to spend time in the field, rather than in a darken room with coffee and valium.

Sounds like the only benefits to jpeg is in the amount of pics on a card.
And the fact that you don’t need yo edit them.
The JPEG vs RAW debate was settled more than 10 years ago.
Not sure which video you were watching Mike but it clearly wasn’t ours as we had no debate about it. We did however do a feature to show the pros and cons of each format which many people found helpful.
so you are saying raw is for the kids that can't colour in inside the lines and need to rub stuff out and do it again later and jpeg is for the kids that can pick the right colour crayon and colour in the image neatly the first time?......................... i know, i'm going to hell lol
one of the advantages of jpeg is if you shoot action and have an entry level camera with a small buffer and it gets clogged up with raw files, jpegs will keep it clear, good for action in wildlife and sports.
