  • This is a quick video on how to install lawn edging, I am using a product called bend-a-board that I bought from home depot. There are many different ways to install an edger and this is the method that I prefer. It’s pretty simple to do, so give it a try and let me know on the comment section below.

    Did you find any pieces smaller than 16 or 20 ft for transport?

    My soil is rock hard. I’m trying to remove the turf and start this process, but it’s proving impossible. Any tips on making the dirt easier to work with?

    • @ShortCutLawn

      You can water it really good 16-24hrs prior to working. That should soften the dirt.

      In North Fort Worth it's nothing but rocky dry soil. A pick axe is a great tool to use standing over the trench and digging as well as SCLs suggestion of watering. It's taking me forever to dig. I also used a flat shovel sideways to just remove the grass. SLCs comes up easy, mine would not. But it worked. I am thinking of perhaps getting a soaker hose and lay over where I need to dig to get a deep soak. That should work if the ground is just dry. I noticed where my sprinkler heads are located it's easy--er! I only have about 40'. LOL. BUT I WILL GET IT DONE! One rock was about 14"x 8" that I had to dig up. It's going to look great once done, but I knew it was going to be laborous too going in.

    Looks great. Only problem I see with it is you now have a place for weeds to one in. Might have been better to fill it with landscape rock or bark.

      Thanks 👍🏼 the key to a good yard/lawn is maintenance, weeds will grow in the middle of a perfect lawn if you let it. Weeds have grown on that area and I just simply pluck it as I see it.

    So, in retrospect, how do you feel about pushing the board 1/2" _below_ grade? Did it work out as you anticipated or do you wish you would have had it project up above grade a little?

    • @ShortCutLawn
      @ShortCutLawn  4 года назад +1

      Works great for me. I mow over the edge with my reel mower, I won’t be able to do it if the board is sticking above grade. 👍🏼

    You would have a heart attack with my extremely rocky soil. It sure isn't pristine the way your dirt came out and how you blow the dirt out of the grass afterward. What a pain for rocky soil.

    Thank you! Here in suburban Colorado, everyone seems to use metal edges. The metal is now bent, slightly deformed in a hundred different places every 20-50 feet. It also has a tendency to sink easily if pressed by stepping or mowing, and I think the sunken metal then cooks the grass in the summer. The thin, metal edging solution would also seem a hazard for playing. Either way, it's not a good-looking, long-term solution. This is perfect!

    Your lawn and project look great! So if I keep my zoysia lawn at 2 inches high and I want it to look like your lawn how much of the board should be above ground? 1 1/2 inches or 1 inch? or I have to place the board below the turf, maybe 1/2 inch so I can mow over it?

    • @ShortCutLawn
      @ShortCutLawn  3 года назад +1

      Yes 1/2” if you want to mow over it.
      The more you have this board buried the less chance of it warping in hot days.
      I personally never experienced it warping but others have, I think they are setting it too high.

    The "flat shovel" referred to in the video is actually not a shovel at all. It's properly referred to as a 'spade,' sometimes also called a 'garden spade' because it's been a favored tool of gardeners for centuries. Also, I would have used a sacrificial scrap piece of one-inch pine (or whatever) over the plastic to keep from damaging it with the hammer. I know, I know -- "Another comments section know-it-all." Hah! Thanks for the video. Have never heard of this product. It's on my list to check out next time I'm at The Home Depot. And you do know it's correctly written with the definite article -- THE Home Depot --- don't you?
