    I was waiting for this! You’re one of the very few channels I follow, but I was waiting for a good, honest, professional comment on this performance of Floor. I have no idea how to look at this with any professional knowledge, I only know that I’m moved emotionally by almost everything that Floor sings. You confirmed my suspicion that she is very able to sing even opera, even without the need to wiggle the jaw😀.

      In car engine terms (probably not the best illustration), many people are 4 cylinders who with lots of training and effort maximize their tools and can pull off a V6 sound quite well. A few people are natural V6's who can with training and effort can work up to V8 power and make singing look much more effortless. Then there are a few world class singers who are naturally gifted with V8 tools and power; I think Floor might be one of those.

      @@BigBrainSinger A number of things have always struck me about Floor and her vocal skillset(s). Her first love is obviously Rock/Hard Rock/Metal; that's the stuff she goes to when she is free to choose what to sing...but she seems to have a developed enough palate and a natural enough curiosity to seek out and appreciate quality music in other styles. Probably the greatest source of annoyance for me is that she's my age (40), she's been singing professionally for going on 25 years, and outside of the European metal/rock scene, she's (and Nightwish too for that matter) still not all that well-known. Which is why I am truly appreciative for all the people like you who are taking the dive and getting to know them!

      Not true. If you listen to her first After Forever album you will hear that her untrained voice is basically classical. She then trained at the Rockacademie Tilburg, but she was not happy with her vocal teachers, so she took extra private lessons from a "conservatorium" teacher. In The Netherlands, conservatium is classical all the way. After her graduation from Rockademie, she had some extra training in classical and musical theatre. So she had years of classical training.

    Great to see you again Charlie! I was very interested in what you had to say about this performance. I have seen other vocal coaches(?) do reactions and analysis of this performance. They usually feel Floor does a respectable job, but falls a little short in her pure opera technique. This does not really surprise me. Floor has stated herself that she is not a true soprano or a complete opera singer. I myself am only casually knowledgeable regarding opera, but feel she does a wonderful job on this aria. However you are an expert and I respect your opinion unconditionally. Formant? A new musical term. Learning. Peace my friend. ✌👍

    • @BigBrainSinger
      @BigBrainSinger  3 года назад +1

      Good to hear from you, Thorgrim. So, I agree with everything you said. I clarified in some comment responses that the way she is singing is not on the same level as world star career opera singers, but that's because she didn't spend her time training for it. She does sing with excellent technique that does meet all requirements for good operatic singing, including creating the singer's formant, which is a combination of resonances in the voice that acoustically travel far and "cut" through other sounds of the same volume, like an orchestra or guitar (any acoustic instrument). The "singer's formant" is how I gauge someone's operatic technique because it is what allows the human voice to truly project without artificial amplification. She does it, her diction in Italian is spot on, and her tone is lovely and stylistically appropriate. That checks my boxes for 5 stars in this one. I do see how she doesn't hold up to other world class singers in this repertoire, but as that's not her goal, it's a non-topic for this content in my opinion. She is unique in her own ways by following her artistic goals and fulfilling them amazingly.

    Let's say from the first sound produced by a baby we develop while using our vocal chords. When that machine, for whatever reason, starts to misfire, it is training that make it possible to circumvent the horrible disappointment of 'not able to communicate'. As I said in a conversation through IG. It took three years to learn how to produce a working sentence without being ashamed of the content of what was said. Just, it still is hard and now after 10 years I need to think which sound to make. Story for another day though.

    Something that I have noticed, is that Floor seems to use the jaw wiggle for specific effects. There are a different sounds that she makes with her various vibratos. The jaw wiggle is just one tool in her tool box, and she seems to know exactly how to use it.

    • @BigBrainSinger
      @BigBrainSinger  3 года назад +1

      I think it's less about the jaw wiggle as an effect as much as the wiggle is the result of maintaining a specific timbre while creating vibrato. I appreciate her ability to stay honest with her operatic technique in that she utilizes true resonance versus fake vibrato.

This TV program came to me years after the broadcast as I have no TV since about 1990 - simply because the content is not good enough. And the big black screen is a dead spot in the home, when off, so it had to go. The goal of this TV series was to bring classical music to younger generations.
    Floor is Dutch, I am Dutch. Her Italian pronunciation or diction is perfect - sort of - I would want to hear an Italian on that. My guess is they would think she has a Dutch accent. That's harder to figure out in song than in speaking, though.

    • @BigBrainSinger

      Hi Zooloo, the purpose of a microphone does differ from situation to situation, and in this case the microphone is being used to record the sound in that particular acoustic space for both recording and amplification. What's interesting is the large distance from her which is only happening because her voice is projecting. The distance also ensures that it will pickup the room noise and acoustic, whereas a dynamic mic close to her mouth would only get vocals for the most part

If not, This does either way seem to prove that her voice can carry even without a mic and carry it through a big hall. I was actually just listening to an actual opera singer whose voice sounded much more powerful and resonant though. That being said she’s done very well for somebody who had only a year of training in classical singing. That probably shows that she took her notes in her studies very very seriously for that year, and she probably still refers to them very often on the regular even now in her life.

      Reality check: ANY opera singer (and any music, period) that you hear on a video or a sound recording has been recorded by a mic... There is no other way to get the sound on the tape... So the presence of a mic tells us nothing. The crucial thing is whether the sound in the room itself is amplified or not. And that does not seem to be the case, given that the show where this was recorded is a serious classical music show. They would not use amplification.

    Why the tension in her forehead?

    • @BigBrainSinger
      @BigBrainSinger  3 года назад +8

      It could be emotive, but forehead tension sometimes relates to extrinsic tension in the vocal tract. Hard to say; but since she is so vocally flexible, I wouldn't dismiss the possibility that she is using some tension to manipulate the sound. While that's not idea for someone who is a career opera singer singing 3-4 hour shows every other night, she does a fantastic job technically with this aria, so the forehead tension shows no actual problem. Of course, if she put all of her time practicing and training into a pure operatic technique, that probably wouldn't happen. The point of diminishing returns of that kind of detailed practice for someone of her level and style just wouldn't make eliminating *Every single little piece of tension* worth it. She makes this work really beautifully to the point that only trained singers and vocal experts would be able to notice the slightest tension, and that happens with singers of all levels depending on the day and their level of vocal fatigue. It's like the difference between 100% and 99.5% efficiency. Still an A+ in my book,.

    12 year old girls? If only that was the youngest. I've seen much younger kids sing it. 10 years old, even 8 years old. I've read from another vocal coach how bad it is for these children to be encouraged into this way of singing. They said similar things to you and also mentioned a badly shaking jaw and tongue, if memory serves. And I don't mean like the movement we see in Floor's jaw sometimes, I mean really major shaking.
    It seems to be a 'thing' these days, to see a little girl on Britain's Got Talent singing this particular song. The younger and tinier she is the better, as far as the show is concerned, or so it seems to me.
    If it's something that gets the singer into bad habits that might impact on their singing ability as adults, and given the subject matter, it seems really inappropriate and exploitative.
    I really wish you could do a video where you react to one of these really little kids singing it, and point out all the issues - how they are generating the fake vibrato and why that's problematic. I don't think you should, because I wouldn't want to put the child at risk of bullying and ridicule! I just wish it was possible, because it would be really interesting.
