Especially for this 10th anniversary Retrospect concert the Epica has invited the 70-piece symphonic Hungarian Extended Remenyi Ede Chamber Orchestra and the Choir of Miskolc National Theatre. Because of the great demand by international fans, Epica announced a live stream, called the Retrostream, on March 4, 2013. The one you hear should out Floor’s name was Mark Jansen. Mark and Floor are both former band members of After Forever. Mark is no relative of Floor but coincidentally carrying the same surename (Jansen/Janssen/Janssens is a very common name in the Netherlands, in the past meaning you were a son/daughter of Jan/Jans)
The thing that strikes me about this is how they blend together so perfectly. We know they are very good friends, of course. But even that aside, they are consummate professionals and make space for each other. There is absolutely zero ego here; it's just two singers having a ton of fun and celebrating each other. It's a beautiful thing to see! Edit: Oh, you don't like 12 year olds singing O Mio Babbino Caro? B-but it's a totally appropriate song for a child to sing... if nobody understands Italian 🤣🤣🤣

B B S.....They are good buds....Went to music school together as youngsters.....This was an anniversary concert for Epica. When you see the S shaped mic stand, you know Simone is there.
We could tell you loved this! Amazing performance by everyone! It’s not everyday you get to perform with an opera, a choir, a metal band - Epica’s 10th anniversary show had one with the lot! So many talented people came together to make this happen. The chemistry / friendship between Floor & Simone shines through and makes this song phenomenal! (Note - As Floor has a stronger / louder singing voice than Simone, comments elsewhere mentioned that Floor’s microphone volume was lowered to be a “balanced sound” of them both).
You might be ready for Ayreon. Both Flooor and Simone and so many other best of the best make appearances there. Before you know it you'll be listening to the Bards song and it will all make sense.
I saw that Ayreon got muted on Twitch. I hope you upload that to youtube. If you get trouble with Ayreon getting blocked on youtube you can contact Arjen himself and he can help get the video back. He's done that for other channels. He supports people reacting to his stuff and he emails with fans all the time.
3:45 - Not trained. but even I said whoa 3:58 - Cool story about listening. I am a live sound guy. One night the power went out in our venue while band was on stage. The band just put down their electrics, picked up their acoustics, the audience shut up, turned on their cell phone lights, the band coalesced into the light and did a set with no lights and no PA in a 1200 seat room and everyone could hear perfectly. I love music so loud it hurts. But, I can appreciate how much you can hear if the audience just SHUTS THE FUCK UP!
The advert you refer to, using an adaptation of the Flower Duet from Lakmé, was in an award-winning British Airways' advert (usually referred to as the 'Face' advert) from 1989, directed by Chariots of Fire director, Hugh Hudson.
@@BigBrainSinger The reason people say that has nothing to do with opera singing, but you're early in your Floor/Nightwish journey right now and will almost certainly change your opinion on that later down the road. 😉 Opera wise, sure they are very comparable though.
@@BigBrainSinger If you want to compare Floor with somebody else then it's probably Anneke van Giersbergen. But one tip, as a 'vocal enthusiast', look at Ayreon - The day that the world breaks down.. it's Progressive rock/metal, with a lot of astonishing singers (world top tier, you already know a couple).
Hey Charlie! I was first turned on to Symphonic Metal in 1999 by Metallica when they worked with Michael Kamen and the SF Symphony. I was a fan but became a superfan when they blew my mind with new arrangements of their music. It's like having a hot fudge sundae and thinking it can't get any better and then someone sprinkles the whipped cream with crushed almonds. I spent years looking for a symphonic metal band having fallen in love with the mix of metal and "opera". The first time I saw Nightwish was with Floor, Ghost Love Score. Within a week I'd listened to their entire Floor catalog and watched the documentary "Please learn the playlist in 48 hours". I've gone back and listened to Tarja and Annette. For most songs I prefer Floor's version, however, I do love Tarja's live version of Nemo and Annette's studio version of Amaranth. It seems like Annette's live versions get drowned out by the band. I'm sure she's a wonderful pop singer, however, Floor and Tarja seem to have the ability to project that power you were talking about at unbelievable registers while the lyrics don't get lost in the music. Both Floor and Tarja did a duet on "Over the Hills" live and it was amazing. You can definitely do comparisons as each has so much control over their vocals, but I love Floor as she seems to sing in the moment. I haven't seen any performance done by her that looks like it was "called in" meaning she's done it 100 times and "Oh Well" here's a 101. She gives her all and if you watch Beste Zanger's you will see how truly diverse her vocal stylings are. I would say she's one in a million, but as a vocal coach, I'm sure you know that already.
Greetings from The Netherlands, (one of the)home(s) of metal queens 😜😍🐱👤 By the way they alsoo sing "Stabath Mater Dolorosa" at the same veneu 👀🐱👤🎶That was because you mentioned that "Flower Duet" and the name Floor in Dutch comes from Flora 🌹

As an ex- teacher the Dutch Rock education is on a different level... There are rock colleges here and pop colleges too... On the same level as classical music... Floor is a product from this education... That is the secret
Charlie, really appreciate the detailed explanations and analysis(of which I'm sure you could go deeper, however, there is only so much time), I do like when the average person react to performances, but yours expands more into the technical and even more artistic side of what these amazing performers are presenting to us. Thank you good Sir!!
I'm glad I can create content that you can appreciate in such a way! My goal is to open the enjoyment of singing (for listeners and aspiring vocalists) to as many people as possible. This is fantastic :)
This whole concert was amazing. Can you imagine This level of production for this genre of music ever happening in North America? This isn't even the first time Epica produced a show with full orchestra and choir. But Americans don't appreciate this type of music enough. Such a pity

And holy cow she hits notes... ♥ - Memories - Angels - Ice Queen - Mother Earth - Jillian... just to name a few :D If you try some of these, please enjoy!
I just discovered your channel and Sancta Terra is deffinitely a classic, both for the audience and the reaction comunity. Would you react to Epica's Unchai Utopia or The Skeleton Key from Omega Alive? Those are insane
To complete the set of the holy trinity of Dutch symphonic goddesses you are missing out on Sharon den Adel the vocalist of Within Temptation. They are a Dutch symphonic metal band that started the same time as Nightwish 1996. They are considered one of the pioneers of female fronted symphonic metal bands. She applied, and was admitted, to the conservatory for opera training but did not like it so she changed over to the arts-academy within her first semester. So apart from that short stay she is completely self-tough.There she studied clothing design and management and completed it successfully. She has mainly used these skills in designing outfits used on stage. To me Sharon is my all time favorite vocalist. That beings said i will agree to anybody that technically nobody is able to beat Floor but there is just a specific tone in Sharon's that connects to me. On top of that both vocalists come a cross like normal and decent people. I would not feel uncomfortable talking to either of them. If this got you interested then try "The promise" from their "Black symphony" concert where they were supported by full symphonic orchestra and choir. ruclips.net/video/39k1IQoeLAU/видео.html
its funny that you mention mezzosoprano and soprano at 13:00 cus simone is technically classified as mezzosoprano and floor is soprano classified :D (atleast on the albums its written like that...)
9:43 and 12:28 . To me, these parts (but the whole of their interaction on stage really) are a reminiscence of the "Flower Duet". Not note-for-note, but emotionally. [12:40 Ooh you said it! Nice, I am not crazy! ;))))] This is Flower Duet 2.0.
Flowers duet from Lakmé good shot....First time someone have asocciation just like me😅🤣 just so simply but no one before see this and sign it😅🤣Sorry my English language is awfull😅🤣
You mean you don't have first-hand experience on singing while pregnant? I wouldn't have thought ;) A few bits of trivia : The man who shouts "Floor Jansen" at the end with a growling voice is Mark Jansen (no family relation). Both he and Floor were together in a band called After Forever in the 90s/early 2000s until Mark quit the band due to creative differences. He went on to found Epica with his girlfriend at the time - Simone. Simone and Floor are close friends and have been for years - this is why they have such good chemistry on stage. Mark and Simone are no longer a couple, but they still work very well together. Simone is married with Oliver Polotai, the keyboards player of another metal band : Kamelot (in fact she was pregnant during this show which is why she didn't headbang as violently as Floor xD ) . Very early Epica (then named Sahara Dust) was in fact Kamelot's support band during their Epica tour (from their namesake album), and it is from Kamelot's Epica album title that the name of band comes from. Kamelot was the support band during Nightwish's 2012 Imaginaerum US tour, during which then-Nightwish-vocalist Anette Olzon fell ill minutes before their Denver show. Kamelot's session vocalists Elize Ryd and Alissa White-Gluz covered for Anette and the show went on while she was hospitalized. Nightwish's decision to go forward with the show upset Anette and she publicly criticized the band on her blog. This was the last straw in Anette's and Nightwish's already troubled relationship and days later, the band fired her, with Floor acting as her replacement for the remainder of the tour. We know the rest of the story. Elize Ryd was also considered by Nightwish as a vocalist - way back in 2005 when they fired their first vocalist, Tarja Turunen. They thought Elize was too young and inexperienced at the time and went with Anette instead. Elize went on to found her own band, Amaranthe. Unrelated to this, on their first album with Anette, Nightwish released a song titled Amaranth. Is your head spinning yet? XD
Can you comment on how Floor keeps singing as if nothing... after she does her windmill??? Do you think that should affect her singing or her breath support???
@@marielaoquendorodriguez670 I did noticed when Simone was a little out of breath but when Floor began to sing I thought it was more an “effect” she wanted to make in than part. If that is she out of breath she definitely hid it very well 😂

Hi!
I suggest you:
Tarja - Supremacy (live Woodstock)
Tarja - The Reign
Tarja - The Undertaker (live in Milan)
Tarja - Slaying the Dreamer (The End of an Era DVD)
Tarja - Ghost Love Score (live)
Tarja - Victim of Ritual
What a voiiceeeee!!
Mark Jansen from Epica played in After Forever with Floor Jansen (No relation)
You might be ready for Ayreon. Both Flooor and Simone and so many other best of the best make appearances there.
Before you know it you'll be listening to the Bards song and it will all make sense.
I was waiting for the reaction to the male choral voices coming in as an antiphon under the female choir's runs. I wasn't disappointed.
They are amazing together those 2 - Europe's finest
👍 🤘 🤘
I saw that Ayreon got muted on Twitch. I hope you upload that to youtube. If you get trouble with Ayreon getting blocked on youtube you can contact Arjen himself and he can help get the video back. He's done that for other channels. He supports people reacting to his stuff and he emails with fans all the time.
This is great to know! Thank you!
Now, Stabat Mater Dolorosa, same show.... and many more. One of the best live Shows ever...
Epica is an awesome band
You should react to:
The obsessive devotion
(Retrospect10th anniversary)
Someone tells him to check also Delain (especially The Gathering which is done with Marco Hietala)
3:45 - Not trained. but even I said whoa
3:58 - Cool story about listening.
The advert you refer to, using an adaptation of the Flower Duet from Lakmé, was in an award-winning British Airways' advert (usually referred to as the 'Face' advert) from 1989, directed by Chariots of Fire director, Hugh Hudson.
yaaasss i'm glad i'm not the only one who thought of the flower duet while watching this!
good to see you discovered another of our dutch ladies of metal =) a few others left to discover. have fun on your journey
They're both amazing! Someone said you can't compare floor to anyone, but I disagree. This is a POWERHOUSE Duo.
@@BigBrainSinger The reason people say that has nothing to do with opera singing, but you're early in your Floor/Nightwish journey right now and will almost certainly change your opinion on that later down the road. 😉
Opera wise, sure they are very comparable though.
I was waiting for your face when they did that little harmony phrase... Did not disappoint.
I'm half Dutch and PROUD of it!
@@BigBrainSinger 👍👌
@@BigBrainSinger Welkom aan boord broer!
Thank for this reaction. Did somebody already request Floor Jansen and Henk Poort performing Phantom of the opera?
Should try devil and the deep dark ocean!
Ooooooo, yes please !
seconded. Think, mini-opera.
Geez this was SUCH a good reaction.... dUDE!!!!! This song, though, is like the ANTHEM OF HUMANKIND! It is also the quintessential example of what Symphonic Metal should be... SO SICK indeed!
Loved every minute!
Best wishes from Namibia 🤟🏻🇳🇦🤟🏻
Imagine that chorus being played in Avengers Endgame during the last battle against Thanos when the MCU ladies storm forward 😆
BRUH
Then we would have a cool song in a shit movie
From this same concert, a pure operatic piece along with the orchestra, Simone and Floor singing Stabat Mater Dolorosa, the audience of metalheads loved it!:
EPICA - Stabat Mater Dolorosa w/Floor Jansen (Retrospect 10th Anniversary DVD I)
The flower duet with these two would be awsome!
Id pay big bucks
The live orchestra and choir is really awesome in this, you do not get that often.
As an ex- teacher the Dutch Rock education is on a different level... There are rock colleges here and pop colleges too... On the same level as classical music... Floor is a product from this education... That is the secret
Damn ....Floors windmill is like WTF!!!! free energy for the whole planet!
Symphony and Metal are like chocolate and peanut butter.
Such a pity
I do, Ian... I do 🥺
If you are interested in hearing Floor performing while 7 month pregnant you should react to "Raskasta Joulua - Oi Jouluyö - Floor Jansen".
It's a metal version of the Christmas song "O Holy Night".
Retrospect show is still THE best live show I ever seen. Around 4000 spectators at the Klokgebouw in Eindhoven, Netherlands.
They sang Stabat Mater Dolorosa at the same concert you HAVE to watch it ❤️❤️
Stabat mater dolorosa juxta crucem lacrimosa dum pendebat filius.
The thing on all of these, nightwish, this - the visuals definitely add to the sound experience.
Man I got the same reaction to the part that almost sounds like the Flower Duet!
Simone and Floor sound similar-ish because they were taught by the same vocal teacher 👩🏫
The same vocal teacher is Amanda Somerville
Because of Floor And Nightwish!
Floor had her 1st child/ she was pregnant onWacken!❤
lyrics
A place which I have searched a thousand times
To finally free myself
Forever wasn't ever long enough
I will refrain
I feel a passion washing over me
To shed the skin I'm in
This evolution will empower me
Now truth begins
And you will not find me
I am safe in here
I'm where I want to be
It's a place where a wish will be granted
Come, you'll see I'm right
It's a force that will live on within you
Dark as day is light
It's a place where your dreams will be slanted
And will always be
It's a force that was sent out to win you
Just you wait and see
Take one step closer to the borderline
Where night and day unite
This mortal coil I've gone and left behind
On holy soil
And you will not find me
I am safe in here
I'm where I want to be
It's a place where a wish will be granted
Come, you'll see I'm right
It's a force that will live on within you
Dark as day is light
It's a place where your dreams will be slanted
And will always be
It's a force that was sent out to win you
Just you wait and see
You will not find me
I am safe in here
I am where I want to be
So leave me now in peace
And you will not find me
I am safe in here
I'm where I want to be!
It's a place where a wish will be granted
Come, you'll see I'm right
It's a force that will live on within you
Dark as day is light
It's a place where your dreams will be slanted
And will always be
It's a force that was sent out to win you
Just you wait and see
It's a place where a wish will be granted
Come, you'll see I'm right
It's a force that will live on within you
Dark as day is light
It's a place where your dreams will be slanted
And will always be
It's a force was sent out to win you
Just you wait and see
One of my favorite Epica live performances:
Epica - Unchain Utopia (OFFICIAL LIVE VIDEO)
The guy who's "growl shouting" Floors name is Mark Jansen (Not related), Floors former bandmate in After Forever and founder of Epica.
Simone Simons the female front vocalist from Epica was several months pregnant.
Have you ever heard of Ayreon? (=Arjen Lucassen himself) ‘The Day That The World Breaks Down’ ‘The Source’ ruclips.net/video/oFuMKdrzPqU/видео.html
Talking about pregnancy, when Floor was 6 months pregnant in December 2016 she sung ‘Oi Jouluyö’ (O Christmas Night) live beautifully ruclips.net/video/ym1Wc5dmUYc/видео.html After giving birth to her daughter Freja she did the same song again in 2019, so if you’re wanting to discover differences between those two to prove that statement here is the link: ruclips.net/video/6asFfKqE2vg/видео.html
Other great female vocalist you will like to watch you :
- Marcela Bovio (from Mexico but mainly operating in the Netherlands)
- Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation)
- Charlotte Wessels (Delain)
- Dianne van Giersbergen (Ex Libris)
- Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering)
Remind me to add this one to my Spotify playlist...
Love your analysis of songs ..... brilliant !
Thanks, Stewart!
Finally, somebody else who heard the 'Delibes moment'. I thought I was the only one who heard the Flower Duet in there.
Boom, great minds, Graham!
I've already sent a request to Floor for the two of them to do the Flower Duet. No answer yet, but I didn't expect one. But that would be amazing.
Zena the goddess and Red Sonja. two valkeries on this world. pure awesomeness
🤔 In the same show they also do Stabat Matar together!
Can't wait to hear it!

You should totally watch their duet of stabat mater dolorsa from the same show!!
There's another duet from this tour you might enjoy.
Same Show, also Floor and Simone: Stabat Mater Dolorosa. Gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it.
Just in case that you didn't check out Epica thoroughly yet:
- Cry for the Moon
- Consign to Oblivion
2 songs that you really need to hear.
Also, check out Kamelot.
Male singer, but also very impressive.
- The Haunting (features Simone)
- Liar Liar (featuring Alyssa Glyz-White - hope I spelled that right - from Arch Enemy)
- March of Mephisto (features Shagrath from Dimmu Borgir)
- Don't you cry
Songs that are very welkl done and should give you a glimpse of what Kamelot is able to do.
And to complete the Dutch Triumvirate of female Metal singers: Within Temptation.
Singers name is Sharon den Adel she's selftaught as far as I know. And holy cow she hits notes... ♥
- Memories
- Angels
- Ice Queen
- Mother Earth
- Jillian...
just to name a few :D
If you try some of these, please enjoy!
I just discovered your channel and Sancta Terra is deffinitely a classic, both for the audience and the reaction comunity. Would you react to Epica's Unchai Utopia or The Skeleton Key from Omega Alive? Those are insane
Check out all of Floor's songs from the 'Beste Zangers' (best singers) TV show.
Making our way through!
if floor and simone do the duet of flowers, i'm ready to die, my life will be fulfilled
If you enjoyed this, check out their duet of Stabat Mater Dolorosa, same concert. AMAZING!
Did you notice the shape of the microphone standard? S like Simone
The first time I heard them harmonize Lakme' popped into my mind.
fifty years ago Jon Lord of Deep Purple already composed a concerto for rock band and orchestra... early cross-over
To complete the set of the holy trinity of Dutch symphonic goddesses you are missing out on Sharon den Adel the vocalist of Within Temptation.
Listened to Sharon last night 😁 will put that video up soon
this video also makes me redefine 'vocal delight'
Great Reaction. You should do Epica - Unleashed from this show. Its awesome.
Yes, the first time that someone mentions Delibes - i think - Lakme. So I wasn‘t completely off.
Yes! Interestingly Delibes isn't known for anything else other than that opera... and it is never performed! Just the duet all the time.
@@BigBrainSinger Sort of the operatic equivalent of "Black Betty", then? ;).
@@alanfoster6589 oh indeed
I really want to see you react and analise Stabat Mater Dolorosa from the same Retrospect concert... heartmelting performance.

😁😁😁😌😇
Just a little snippet Charlie, the song is about a suicide bomber who thinks he's in Heaven, but is actually in Hell.
Holy damn hell 😳
@@BigBrainSinger A very fair summation. :-)
@@572Btriode glad you caught that 🤣
maybe you want to hear the metal side of epica try consign to oblivian live at the zenith
its funny that you mention mezzosoprano and soprano at 13:00 cus simone is technically classified as mezzosoprano and floor is soprano classified :D (atleast on the albums its written like that...)
Both are still types of sopranos :)
9:43 and 12:28 . To me, these parts (but the whole of their interaction on stage really) are a reminiscence of the "Flower Duet". Not note-for-note, but emotionally. [12:40 Ooh you said it! Nice, I am not crazy! ;))))]
This is Flower Duet 2.0.
Flowers duet from Lakmé good shot....First time someone have asocciation just like me😅🤣 just so simply but no one before see this and sign it😅🤣Sorry my English language is awfull😅🤣
Perfect! I think it would be great 👍
You mean you don't have first-hand experience on singing while pregnant? I wouldn't have thought ;)
A few bits of trivia :
The man who shouts "Floor Jansen" at the end with a growling voice is Mark Jansen (no family relation).
XD
This is awesome trivia, thank you!!!
You can find floor singing o mio bambino cara on youtube😁
Can you comment on how Floor keeps singing as if nothing... after she does her windmill??? Do you think that should affect her singing or her breath support???
They both were out of breath for a few seconds it’s very hard to notice because they’re so good
@@marielaoquendorodriguez670 I did noticed when Simone was a little out of breath but when Floor began to sing I thought it was more an “effect” she wanted to make in than part. If that is she out of breath she definitely hid it very well 😂
