Donaghy is a freakin' liar. He fixed games from 2003-2007. The gambling data / spreads confirm it in the games he officiated. He was not blackmailed by the mafia. It was pure greed and arrogance.

@@MrAmrmnabil True, his still a criminal, in the sense that he bet on NBA games, which at that time was illegal. But he did not bet on games, he himself reffed, which also was confirmed by the FBI, nor did they find any evidence that he influenced games he reffed. The FBI also confirmed that he won money on around 80 procent, of the bets he made. And if he didn't bet on games he reffed, but only on games reffed by his colleagues, how would you then explain such a high win share percentage? A colleague of Donaghy's Scott Foster received 134 phone calls from Tim Donaghy between October 2006 and April 2007. That was the same period during which Donaghy admitted to betting on NBA games. The report said that Donaghy called Foster more than any other ref and that he didn’t call any other official more than 13 times.
Also, when Donaghy called Foster, he mostly used the phone that he dedicated to gambling-related phone calls, and the phone calls stopped abruptly when Donaghy said he stopped gambling. Scott Foster is still an active ref in the NBA.

The NBA got just as much help in that as the teams that the crooked refs helped. None of the media looked too hard at it because they all would have lost revenue from broadcasting NBA games if they exposed the truth and the league lost viewers. Even media outlets that didn't broadcast games wanted to stay on the NBA's good side so that in the future they wouldn't have a tarnished relationship with the league when they might negotiate a deal to broadcast NBA games.
Every corporate entity tied to the NBA stood to lose money if they didn't try to hide the truth, and they all looked the other way.

Any sport that has big tv ratings gets rigged. NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB, NCAA football and basketball. It’s all blatant coercion when you see the difference between straight games and rigged games. Refs will call fouls in key moments, make a player sit. The mob use to rig the games then tv money got involved and the leagues have to much to lose to let small market teams win. UNC vs Gonzaga blue blood vs mid major. Gonzaga couldn’t breathe without a foul being called. Seattle vs Pittsburgh Super Bowl, so many phantom bad calls vs Seattle it’s sickening. Warriors vs Cleveland, Green gets suspended, curry gets 2 quick fouls in the first quarter. I could go on and on. Another big factor is look at how Vegas is going to win. Seattle vs Denver super bowl, the only people that made money was Las Vegas. All of those miraculous comeback wins from the patriots. It’s all about the money and everyone is sucker for buying in on it. They’re not even classified as a sport to the government. They are classified as (Entertainment)!!!!

All of the "small market" teams continually get screwed even to this day due to league/refs rigging the games. The Indiana Pacers had one of the best teams year after year during the 90's and were cheated out of a championship time and time again. I'm not getting into a pissing match with haters-- so save it. They had guys they could rely on but not the "G.O.A.T. franchise players" whose endorsement could sell millions and millions of jerseys which is what the NBA insisted on before they would arrange for a team to win a title. Sadly, "love of the game" in all of its honesty and integrity wasn't enough for the league and its officials to just leave well enough alone and let the players' performances decide the outcomes of the games. The NFL is just as bad-- the Colts were repeatedly screwed over in the post season. It takes far less effort for the NFL officials to change the outcome of a football game successfully and they can do it with far less exposure than the NBA officials risk (what actually seem like a minor miscall at the time can easily shift the entire momentum of the game drastically changing the course of the game within several plays). So, I'm done with all of them! I couldn't wait to be a father and avidly watch a basketball or football game with my kids like I did with my father growing up-- now... I really can't bring myself to inflict this type of disappointment on my children that these falsehoods create for their fans...

I always wondered about games getting stretched out in a playoff series in any sport. It seemed so obvious at one time. The only reason the fans got lucky on this one is because the FBI was wire tapping others in an unrelated case. It's the same way the IRS nails people: Not the guy that wrote the check but the one that cashed it. Then they work backwards. I think this guy is generally being truthful. But like any other convicted felon, there are parts to his story that simply aren't believable. Does it really seem NBA referees would lower the bar so low that they wouldn't call fouls at the beginning of a game because of a $20.00 tip to a ball boy? WTF? It seems like bullshit. And when you consider the paranoia about gambling in pro sports it's hard to believe tipping would be a reality with ball boys. What teenage boy do you know that's a basket ball fan that wouldn't love to be a ball boy for one minute in an NBA game, let alone the rich fathers willing to pay so their son/daughter could have the experience? Tipping? We know this, Tim is a convicted felon based on what he did, not why he did it or what the others involved did. His wife divorced him the same year he was arrested.
I do agree with the NBA being a money making business and that practically anything will become baggage should the golden egg get messed with. Face it, and I mean this, the NBA has been operated by smart, educated Jews. The current commissioner has a law degree. I'm not complaining ............The former and current commissioner have done a fantastic job. Both pro's that understand branding and how important protecting it is. You better believe the NBA distanced themselves from this guy. I think the damage he did to the sport wasn't the money he made. He confirmed what many fans wondered............why was Jordan and now Curry allowed to travel, palm the ball, carry and do all sorts of other things that an average player would get called for. Watch Lebron James take three or four steps before a dunk..............it's embarrassing to the game. I often tell a buddy of mine that most of the current NBA players wouldn't last 10 minutes in a high school game with a competent ref.
Fans need to understand, like Tim said, is entertainment. It's a hybrid between athleticism and entertainment. The fans don't want to watch as Lebron James gets called for travelling after he takes his typical three to four steps before he slams. Tim was dead on with his assessment of what NBA brass really want; the stars to shine and to be given preferential treatment as it's them the fans come to watch.
In the end Tim stars in a low budget film shown at a film festival, visits his kids every other weekend. He has a history which will follow him to his grave. All this for telling the truth.
