  • Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy, who was found guilty of betting on games he officiated, recently gave an interview providing an insight into his life in the NBA. Donaghy became a referee following in his father's footsteps and after having two unsatisfactory jobs after college. After starting his officiating career in the minor CBA league, he got onto the NBA's training program, slowly working his way up to become a referee in the major league. He described his early years as challenging, facing harsh criticism from players and coaches. However, he persisted and eventually moved up the ranks, also referring in playoff games. His salary grew from $80,000 a year plus bonuses to $300,000 when he retired. Donaghy goes to detail his gambling and subsequent FBI investigation, which led to his prison sentence. To hear more, check out the full interview above.

A team with the fewest shot attempts in the paint leading the league in free throws for example.
A team winning 23% of their games with x official compared to 58% the rest of their games.

However interview wise, whoever conducted this interview sucked. He said all right like wrapping up the video around around an hour 12 minutes, the video should’ve ended there, not just him bashing the poor guy, stating how much he fucked himself. And not only that, but throughout the entire interview, he would just chuckle at random points, where it was very insensitive, or would ask a question made for him to not look the best. No shit he did bad things but you conducted him for an interview for now let him share his story.

The lakers took 27 free throws in the 4th quarter of game 6 of the 2002 western conference finals vs the Kings. 27 free throws in the 4th quarter!!! The kings were up 3-2 in that series and the NBA wanted to prolong the series for more money. Whoever won this series was going to win the championship. The Nets were the eastern conference champs and in was a consensus that they had no chance versus either team. They eventually got swept by the Lakers in the NBA finals.

This interview is a big reason why I don’t watch sports as much or enthusiastically as I use to do. Every league is scripted/fixed to a point. It’s definitely not a conspiracy at this point. So many times we all seen blow ref calls on clearly foul/penalty plays. It’s sad we all spend time money, energy rooting for our teams and behind the scenes. The league has a narrative they want.
Not saying it’s completely 100% scripted/fixed. Some team’s definitely disrupt things. But this interview sheds tons of light on all professional sports. Honestly I would luv retired umpires/officials/refs to tell their inside stories. I bet they have plenty to say about league higher ups wanting certain calls or outcomes.
