I just looked like mechanic exchanges an oil filter in my Sienna. When he attempted to unscrew a filter housing - it was sitting so tight that he needed to use an extra long bar on his wrench. It looked so bad that I was affraid he will break something... So I did search some youtube videos like this one. Here is what I found that could be important: 1. You should clean well groove for both - small and large o-rings. 2. Use clean, new oil to "moisture" rings and apply oil on all rings - not only on tops when ring is already in the groove. 3. No matter what - before trying to unscrew a large fiter casting - remove - or loose a smaller cup, because when tighten - adds tightness to a large one. So When it is on tight - it will be harder to remove a large one. 4. When you install your filter - screw on a large casting first. Do it before tighting a small cap. Small cap put on and tight when a large casting is tighten within specs writen on it (or by the hand - if you feel confident you do it right). 5. I know - nobody cares, but oil is pretty toxic and nasty in general.. Using rubber gloves at that kind of job - just makes sense. Other than that - Nice video. I appreciate your effort. It always counts if someone wants to help others. Thank you.
Hey dudes great video you have helped me save a tremendous amount of money learning to do this myself with more confidence. Keep up the good work and great content.
Engineers needlessly make things over complicated. It's much simpler to have the motor use the disposable regular filter instead of having to deconstruct and rebuild the filter.
Thank you for sharing brother! I hate dealer scammers, if you go for quick oil change and they charge me $79 plus tax. I will try to do it for fun and not giving these scammers a business
Always use gloves. This oil is not regular . It goes deep to your skin and blood , then the risk of cancer jumps high. Be safe and blessed in the name of Jesus
Got my oil changed by vavoline in lakewood colorado. They didt out the drain plug back on tight. I worked two delivery jobs that day. And engine siezed by the end of day. Had to junk the whole car.
I have a 2017 Sienna and watching this video, in my opinion it is not worth it considering the mess I saw! My local dealer as much as I hate them charges $69.99 for the work including labor! They do it, replace the parts and deal with the used oil..so worth it!
For those people reading this....it seems for various model years of Sienna they used either plastic or aluminum oil filter housings for the 3.5L v6 engine. Can folks here confirm that the 2016 model year used aluminum?.....I think 2017 - 2019 used plastic.
Came here to learn how to change my oil but have decided I’ll rather just pay for the convenience but the knowledge of knowing how to is nice and useful I’m sure
I frequently have the same problem you had with the oil filter cap not coming loose before the full filter housing. No matter how carefully I torque tighten both of them, whenever I try to remove the oil filter cap (the small circular piece at the end of the filter housing), it always ends up turning the entire filter housing and once that becomes loose it's near impossible to get anything off. I end up taking off the full filter housing and then having to use two hands and some tools like a strap wrench in order to get just the filter cap loose. Do you have any tips on how to make sure the filter cap piece will come off before the rest of the housing turns? I think the difference in torque tightness is too small between the two which isn't a great design as this happens frequently.
Yeah. I had the same problem. Had to put the whole thing in my vice to get the drain cap loose. Hopefully next time it isn't like that since I didn't tighten as much.
Your videos have helped me keep my 2012 Sienna LXE in tip-top shape. I do have one question, my hazard lights have stopped working. I have checked the fuse, it's OK, the bulbs, they are OK, checked to make sure there is power to the fuse, there is, yet when I push the button, nothing happens. Do you have a video on fixing this?
idc what anyone says, no oil filter should be changed once every 20k miles. You need to change them as often as you change your oil. They are so cheap anyways. spend the extra 10 dollars ffs.
Oh god I bought this vehicle not realizing it had this dumbass filter design. Thanks for this video. Well done instructions; I'm fuckin hating vehicle manufacturers right now; first no transmission dipstick now this. I'm so disappointed. Literally making vehicles' designs worse.
Do yourself a favor, never use Fram on a Toyota. OEM is cheaper online. Toyota parts are sometimes cheaper. Definitely better. Watch Fram filters videos compared with the rest. Lower on the quality build than most others.
Fram Ultras are actually very good filters and have much better filter efficiency than OEM. Everyone thinks Fram sucks because of the orange cans. The Ultras are quite the opposite.
@ Sir Sweetness Obviously you don't know the difference between the three different Fram filters. The Fram Ultra Synthetic filter is very high quality rated for 20,000 miles.
Tell me one good reason why there is anything wrong with a 20,000 mile Fram Ultra Synthetic filter for a cartridge system. You're only replacing the element and o-rings. What is wrong with Fram's element or o-rings? Huh?
JackTannehillPromoter just check RUclips people cut them open and there are less pleads and crap cardboard. Also inner parts are plastic while other filters have metal.

Excellent video. I try to avoid Fram filters. Buy the oil filter from O’Reilly. Good quality Wix filters way better than Fram garbage

@Shawn Kemp my hazard lights
Thsnks.
The only thing someone might need is a oil filter wrench. You can buy one for like 10 bucks.

You don't prime the filter housing with fresh oil?
John Mardinly I guess they forget or just may be they don't know lol
How does one do that?
Cindy Fletcher just fill the new filter with the new oil before installation, so the filter wont be dry when starting the car.
It's not written anywhere in any official instructions but many consider it a best practice. I usually do it.
Maybe the reason this is not instructed is you would then have too much oil in the engine.
Oh god I bought this vehicle not realizing it had this dumbass filter design. Thanks for this video. Well done instructions; I'm fuckin hating vehicle manufacturers right now; first no transmission dipstick now this. I'm so disappointed. Literally making vehicles' designs worse.
Disculpa donde lleba el deposito de la licuadora para rellenar toyota sienna 2014 gracias.

Thanks
Just some advice, REMOVE ANY RINGS on you hands were working on cars.
Can you just put a regular oil filter?

I only buy the OEM filter for my Prius not only because its better, but because it is almost $2 cheaper at my local dealer.

did you have to jack the van or is the height ok? what oil type?
You need it higher

no crush washer??
Nope
Bill Pugh thanks i don’t have one either

lol @ the bucket
“Don't ask why we don't wear gloves." Because that's the Russian way.

But I decided after looking at that filter part I’ll fk it up I’ll just go to dealer and continue to get robbed
How many Quarts???
on my 2011 there's a huge oil filter, not just a little plug on the bottom. wonder why this is different
Huh?
What? you wore a watch and used the bucket to change oil in the garage....
Use rubber gloves!

What do you mean, he lost you? The video is showing how to do it. Use whatever filter makes you happy.
