    Torque spec for the housing is 25 Newton-meters, which is a little over 18 foot-pounds.
    Fortunately you used the ol imaginary torque wrench and that works better in this instance. Good video, thanks.

    Thanks for the video. I had just purchased a 2010 Sienna, and doing the research on typical maintenance items. I also have a 2008 Tundra that has the same oil filter type, and I learned from this video I had been doing the filter wrong, which I had figured as I've ALWAYS made a mess from the filter. I didn't know what I had been using to remove the housing was actually the drain plug for the filter.

    Nice job on the video. I wish you would do a video on how DIYers can safely lift the car in their garage with a floor jack and 2 jack stands. No one shows this!

    Beautifully orchestrated audio and video instructions for doing this oil change. It was a pleasure to watch.
    I believe Toyota went back to spin on filters with the 2019 or '20 models of Camry and RAV 4, and possibly others . Not sure if that happened with Sienna. My guess that they did this was that folks were properly disgusted with the propitiatory canister paper element approach for having to previously been able to use spin on filters, which was easier.

    Thanks. I hadn’t changed this type before. Unfortunately my filter plug was seized to the casing so had to pull it off as a unit. Minor mess. All good. Cheers.

      Same here. I just left mine as one piece. It’s obviously so tight that it’s not gonna leak. And it’s not much messier.

    Excellent! Every RUclips instructional should be like this. Unfortunately for me, I've DOUBLE FAILED doing this on my 2019 Sienna. After doing everything properly, the oil leaked like from a sieve where the filter housing seats against the bottom of the engine when I started it up. Pulled it out again, all o-rings, filter and everything checked out/properly installed . . . so put in a new filter, o-rings, oil, and it happened again! So checked with the dealer to give them a heads-up that I may have it towed over to have them to figure it out. Will check one more time to see if the housing isn't cracked, as the the last time it was done by the dealer, they tightened the plug AND housing so tight I needed a breaker bar to unscrew both! I am an experienced mechanic on both Toyotas and motorcycles, so I don't think it's me. Followed the above instructions (and manual) to the letter. Ready to pull what's left of my hair out!

      @salttram1 3 года назад +6

      YES, turns out the filter was cracked from being over-torqued at the dealer! They admitted no wrong doing, of course. NEVER let the dealer work on your vehicle if you can avoid it! If they can screw up something as simple as an oil change . . .

      @@salttram1 i just cracked mine and it's never been to the dealer. I knew i was in trouble when i had to reach for my breaker bar. i think toyota treats these as consumables. lol

    Do you always have to change the drain plug gasket? Also, where do you get the drain plug gasket?

    Thanks for the video. I wanted to make sure I was doing it right. Had to use an impact wrench to get the filter housing loose after a 3 foot breaker bar wouldn't do the job! First time using an impact wrench on an oil filter for me. He-man must have tightened it last oil change.

    • @TheWilferch
      @TheWilferch Год назад +1

      Proper tightening is "smidge" past hand tight when the seal bottoms out by hand....maye only 1/16 a turn more (yes!...maybe seen as 1/8" travel on the OD of the can !!). . I'm sure oil monkeys go maybe 1/4 or 1/2 turn more.

    It says 6.4 quarts but you only pour 5 quart (or 5 bottle and a little on the 6 bottle). Is it suppose to be 6 quart bottle and then .4 quart? Or am I counting the bottle you pour wrong? Unless each bottle pour is 1.5 quart then its correct.

    NEVER....NEVER.....use the 3'8 drive recess to RFEMOVE the housing....you can BREAK or ROUND OUT the drive area of the tool. USE the 27mm HEX that surrounds the 3/8 drive FOR REMOVAL. More robust. However, you CAN use the 3/8 hex to INSTALL the unit. Hint---> The spec tightness to install is 18.5 ft/lbs ( 25NM)...and beyond bottominig it out by hand, that value is AT MOST another 1/16th turn. Minor. Most oil change guys, the Toyota shops included.....go WAY too tight.
