No matter what i do i always get black toenails. When summer comes and I always wear flip flops, I just paint my toenails with a tan colored polish.....
I have made-to-measure trainers and don't run ultramarathons, or even marathons. In fact, I rarely run more than 7 miles, and my most common distance is 4 miles, but I always have raised and/or black toenails, most of which eventually just fall off quite painlessly. I have just got used to it. At the moment on the left foot I have one missing toenail and two black toenails and on my right foot I have three black toenails.
@@motivationtheoryrunning Exactly. People always look at my feet and toes - well, my toenails - but I wear black toenails as a badge of honour! (I live in the hot and humid climate of SE Asia and so always wear sandals.) Maybe it is the climatic conditions but my toenails always grow back in just a few months, not the 6-9 months most people say. Also, there is usually a half-formed 'replacement' already under the old toenail when it falls off.
my stupid second toes are longer than the rest and both go at the same time. you can try to coat the crap out of it with nail polish in the hopes that it hangs on long enough for the base to grow in a little. and cut a bandaid in half, wrap it.
Had a very similar experience with my first black toenail. No trauma, just a pair of Salomon shoes that were about .25 of a size too small. Felt great at the start but two toenails were inflamed the next day, turned blue, then black. I gave the shoes away. Good topic for new Ultra Trail runners.
My right foot is one size bigger than left one..and I discovered it the hard way of course!! So, when I buy running shoes, I go for almost 1,5 size bigger than the size I use for everyday shoes: I now use a 42,5 size, New Balance and Altra. Even at work I need bigger shoes and my female colleagues are always surprised by my feet size 😁.I' m like a Bigfoot girl...but no nails issues, and no one has stolen my working shoes yet 🤣🤣
Funny video John. I have the same situation: left foot slightly larger than the right, second toenail gets mysteriously traumatized ( I run on roads so no rocks or roots), then you have to wait months for it to heal. You have a good toenail for awhile, but then you're back to groundhog day! I'll probably have to give in and upsize a half, but the right foot may not like that and fight back with its own problems. Lol 🤣
@@Jyattapra I can’t have any shoes with toe spring, I switched to Altra and I got a urea cream as my nail grows out to keep the skin soft. Also antifingal I put on the nail to prevent me from getting nail fungus. I didn’t have it but it’s a good preventative. Keep the mail filed down so it’s thin as it grows in etc
My left foot seem to bare the brunt of it , not just slightly larger but also weaker than the right and tends to swell up a bit from old injuries, i think. Much of my weekly running is done between 3 and 5 AM, so in the dark. Though I'm very familiar with my backyard trails, just the other day I stopped my left big toe on a root. But everything is covered with leaves righ now and likely I didn't have enough coffee either. Comes with the territory though I feel and I prefer the trails over boring pavement any day.
Not eventually it just separates from the toe and will fall off if damaged enough. It could take weeks or even months. Another mail will start to grown in
I haven't lost a toe nail yet but I have gotten blisters on my pinky toe. I'm still trying to find the right shoe that doesn't let that think tear a hole in the side of my shoe.
😂🤣🤢 That's some Silence of the Lambs stuff right there!! Your poor kids! 😂 I'm still nursing my first black toenail from nailing a rock in my crocs. I don't think it's cool at all...I mean, crocs! 😆 I'm glad to hear about the self surgery... my husband wanted to, but that was far scarier to me than losing a nail.
@@motivationtheoryrunning true but id rather it prevent black toenails and ill gamble the other issues. i was running barefoot and doing great. started wearing shoes again for races and now got a black toenail. podiatrist wanted to do a biopsy but i need a second opinion before that. i had this blood toenail before.
@esantone0398 black toenails and having them fall off is never been an issue for me. There’s zero way I would run in sandals in the cold mountain trails, snow rain, mud and I would eventually kick a big rock anyways because cause that happens in shoes with me 😂
My toenail started to get loose after my run today. I am 14 years old, so I naturally was getting self-conscious.

I always have the nails on the 2nd largest toes black...always. Lol
Best way is to ignore it. Got 5 and I'm fine.
Yep let em be and they work themselves out. So get massive blisters under theirs, not sure how....those need to be addressed by a podiatrist
@@motivationtheoryrunning honestly, impossible to prevent blisters or chaffing from long runs.
For the most part you are right, but there some things people can do to not end up with a complete dumpster fire of a foot afterwards.
your videos are looking so clean!
Thanks man!
I feel less concern after watching this video ,thank you

Ouch, yeah it’s a tough way to learn, can’t use the shoes and lose toenails...

Yeah, it’s a crazy life for feet!!
That’s a rough one!
I get them just running regular marathons I went to a podiatrist he gave me great ideas
What are those ideas 💡?? Please tell me I am afraid 😭

I always love trails over roads too! I forgot to add in my tip of pick up your feet to avoid this stubbing of toes....it hurts..lol

If a runner stubbs his toe in the woods and no one is around, does it make a sound? 🤔

my toenail has lifted... but its still connected in the one corner. Should remove it or let it completed grow out?
I really don't know, use your best judgement...
what a disgusting topic...still smashed the shit out of the like button 😁
Hahaha, yeah it is …the black toenail video is fun too😂😂
@@motivationtheoryrunning you sure mean the blister video 😉 yep it is and exactly that brought me to this one here 😅
Hahaha, I can’t see what video the comment came from in this app…so I assumed it was the blister one 🤣😂.
Great tips! Never ran an ultra and have actually been curious about toenails falling off, cause it seems like a common theme
Thanks, yeah it happens but not a big deal. It’s when you can prevent them and don’t and cause some damage.
I got my big toe black from basketball and people saying it will fall off and I'm confused because if my toenail falls off won't it bleed a lot

Funny we all have feet and yet we all have different issues based on so many factors when it come to foot shape, gait, foot strike and so on.
Compression socks give me black toenails 👣

anyone think barefoot sandal running can help prevent this sort of thing?
It may help one thing but cause other issues I believe…

Is it dangerous??to have a black toenail
Nope, not at all
