Have you ever had this issue? 😬
Loss of nail? Yes, caused by a long distance hike. Not pretty :0
Few times and have lost a nail each time. 😛
I had this issue one time. Fortunately, the new nail grew in my toe looks like new now. It did not really hurt, but it was very unsightly.
At least once a year. Nothing helped, not even perfect shoes or changing the running style. My doc said it also depends on the architecture of the foot. Mine must be bad 🙄. At least it does not cause any pain, it only does not look good.
I had not gone for a run for about 8years. Then went out and did 10k with my brother. Both big toe nails turned black and later falled off.
I have been running for 40 years (33 marathons, 60 triathlons, Ironman) and worked in a running store in college. It's pretty simple: 1) Get shoes that fit like a glove. The fable of thumb's width room in the shoe is stupid. Any movement in your shoes will provide constant beating on your toes nails, and more importantly in shoes too big, you lose the support the shoe was designed for (if you slide in the last, everything moves and is not in the right place). The shear force upon your foot while running is huge. Unless you eat a bucket of salt before your run, your feet are not going to swell that much, footwear uppers are soft, pliable materials- not the leather shoes Bannister ran in. Get shoes that fit! 2) Trim your damn nails. Trim them closely, the less nail exposed the less chance of injury. Keep after this. 3) If you run marathons, it's going to happen from time to time, fact of life. You are choosing an endeavor that is not natural to modern man (people in our generation sit at desks all day long). It's not just the race day, it's months of big weeks of mileage. You could always get your nails surgically removed😀
I'm a simple person....I see "black toenails" in the title, I click
Are you a distance runner or your algorithm just is that good?
Had black toenails twice and each time it took about a year for the nail to fully recover. Found out that one of my toes (the culprit) was longer than my big toe. Went to professional footwear store, and bought a pair of shoes that are a bit bigger. I sometimes also put a plaster onto that toe before running (for more cushioning - weirdly it stops the nail from getting black) and avoid the feet to get wet. Have not had a black toenail ever since....
THANK YOU. This is a problem I'm having right now.
It is worth mentioning the effect of heel drop. My toes were battered by 12mm drop shoes but in a very similar fitting shoe that had a 4mm drop the issue stopped immediately. In hindsight I recognised that my feet had been constantly trying to slide down the 12mm drop and excessive heel striking was jolting my foot forward on each stride.
I have also found that shoes with a stiffer sole seem to let the foot slide around more.
Finally, choice of sock material makes a difference for me. Merino always works for me as it seems to grip the insole whereas some man-made fibres are more slippery.
This is a really good point and often overlooked by a lot of runners.👍
As long as the shoe fits nice and tight heel drop is no problem at all. I've been running on trails and roads for 35 years i'm a heel striker used to drops ranging from 4 to 12 mm and never had a black nail in my life even on very steep and techy trails. It's all about the fit !
Started wearing Altras - never had an issue, feet feel glorious
😧 I'm about to start couch to 5km training soon handy to know this 👍🇬🇧
Living with a black toenail right now. My issue was running in a new pair in a 70.3 without them being completely broken in. Great video thanks.
Hi John, I'm new to running. How long do shoes take to break in ? Does it make a huge difference to the toes, assuming size is correct ?
I recently just started running and i blame it on the people who got me into running. Now i got black to nails and some of the nails were badly injured and came off. I’m hooked on running and i can’t stop it!
Try you a shoe fitting in the afternoon as you're feet have naturally warmed up and the socks you'll likely to use come race or training days 👍☺️
You guys are amazing in all the content you provide. Curious how you ultimately decide what videos to make? Do you listen to viewer suggestions? Or primarily discuss amongst the GTN team?
Another vote for Injinji toe socks.
Been using them for years as run 2-3 half’s a week. I still lose the odd nail but never as many & they keep althletes foot at bay as I have sweaty feet as well. Remember to get shoes with wider toe boxes when you use them‼️
Yup, I have one at the moment, middle toe, right foot, after a long run. It’s happened once before, exact same toe, so based on that experience there’ll be a new nail growing underneath and in a few more weeks the top one will fall off and all will be good... until I do it again!!!
Only if this video was uploaded earlier I would have not lost my nails , RIP toe nails 😂
My second toe on my right foot is longer than my big toe, and that causes all kinds of issues. It got black while I was marathon training, then I ended up losing it after the marathon. I have to buy socks that are a little big, and make sure they aren't tight against my toe when I start running.
You lose the nail and not the toe right? 😳
@@HikerWantsToBattle whole foot! lol. Yep, just the toenail
Thanks for the great video. Every time I run with Nike Alphafly I will get one or two black toenails which is quite a problem. The shoe is in my normal size with 2cm length margin.
Ella I also get this with the Alphafly did you ever solve it or found a hack to stop it?
Hey, I found all the advice very useful, but I have to correct you on one tiny thing: it's a myth that nails need to breathe. The visible nail is dead tissue, especially the upper part. Nail polish not only does not affect them "breathing", but it protects them from humidity.
But there is a downside. Polish prevents you from noticing that it's time to trim your nails. Especially on the feet that are more protected than our hands, so the polish can last a very very long time. So make a note to remove it every 10 days or so.
I swear by the runner’s lock 👌. Learnt the hard way (nasty blister) that elastic laces should not stay in the shoes all the time. Mind you, I use the same pair of shoes for my races and training.
I only had black toe nails when I started running. I went to a running shoes store and ask them about it they said you need to wear a bigger shoe size than you normally wear. Haven’t had any black toenails since.
Shoes with a wide enough toe box are really important-not just a wider shoe but enough room at the front for your toes to spread and move properly. Toe socks are brilliant too. Ps not sure why I chose to watch this while eating my dinner!
@GTN would be good to have a poll of how many are having this issue. I suspect a lot. For me starts after 70k per week even with multiple shoes in the rotation.
Hmmm, personally I don't know many long distance runners who have all their toenails, personally I'm between 4-8 at any given time.
I’d also recommend to have socks that are not too tight on your toes. Once I put them on, I pull a little bit on the front as to have a little extra space for my toes.
I have never heard of this as somewhat of a newcomer to runner. I'll take my knee injury over this all day from running
It's actually possible to train and teach the body to move the feet up without pushing the toes super hard straight up.
I actually had that problem and lifted my toes every time I wanted to lift my feet, instead of just lift my feets. A couple of weeks of sensible, really focused technic-training and I learned not to lift my toes super hard straight up anymore.
The same pink colour in all the toes can be boring sometimes. Unless there are aches, one or few of them changing colour once a while doesn't hurt much... 🤔😉 However, points noted with gratitude....
I had a black toe nail. I was more bothered about losing it than anything! Simple fix at the podiatrist. I found it was wet weather that caused mine though!!!
I got black toenail from longboarding. I changed shoes and solved the problem, the offending shoe did not have a great fit at the toe part.
When the Trans Gaule race came through my area, I went to meet some of the athletes. Many of them had cut the top off of the front of their running shoes to expose their toes. But I'm guessing 18 days and over 1100km through France in the middle of summer, is an extreme race.
I appreciate your knowledge being shared miss. #Godspeed
Mine have just gone super thick. About 3 x as thick. Painful after a run, and difficult to cut.
100% I have this problem too-it’s horrible AND a badge of honor 😉
Nice shoes, my colleagues at work in the hospital use those but expensive, i use only asics 😁
For my marathons I use gel toe tubes which work fine !
Two and a half (haha) black toenails now. Lack of consistency in shoe design seems to be an issue; I keep my 1,000+ km Nike Pegasus 36 because it does not cause me any such troubles, whereas the newer Pegasus 37 fits in a very slightly different way and causes me all sorts of problems.
I once told a receptionist at a hospital that I had a black toenail, and she just acted as though she didn't hear that, so I never got it treated.
Injinji toe socks and vivo barefoot shoes with naturally wide toe boxes allow lots of toe freedom and protection. Worth a try?!
Got one today, big left toe. Right is ok.
All toe nails go to heaven.
Maybe you guys can petition On to make more wide shoes? The cloudstratus was a heaven sent for me and I use it all the time even for short runs. Before that, I’ve always had blisters on my toes and, one time, I thought the toenails on my small toes were gonna fall off!
one of my nails went black post marathon in april. Now its split round the back and flappy. I have another marathon in a couple of weeks. What can I do? KT tape it?
The thing that sucks the most is the cost of finding the 'right fit' :(
I have a few raised toenails. I bought a big nail clipper but it's still not big enough to trim
Would zero drop shoes help avoid black toe nail?
Before moving west to settle the territories, Americans often went to a dentist to have all their remaining teeth removed and replaced with prostheses. That's because the territory they were settling usually had very few towns. And they were far away. So if one of their teeth became infected, there was no professional help they could count on. And tooth infections were not only common (dental hygiene was in its infancy, and bread was not as free of pebbles as it is today), but also quite dangerous. I wonder if one could do the same with toenails. Maybe not as a prophylactic measure, but if it is a chronic problem? (Obviously this would be a serious surgery that must be performed, if at all, by a doctor. Which I am not, so this could be a ridiculous idea.)
I was running around Bath today 👍🏼 with a black toenail 🤢
injinji toe socks forever! when the time comes i will be buried with them on
This is me right now. I was wearing the wrong shoes and I was walking long distance. Now I’m treating the infection. 🤦🏽♀️
1/2 size bigger tyres & 2 pairs of thinner socks cured my black toenail “badge” 😬
Both of my second toes are longer than the big toes. When I’ve done longer trail runs with a lot of downhill, I’ve had tons of pain for a few days afterwards. I wonder if I just need to build callouses on these toes. Or try those gel toe protectors.
I tried toe protectors but still doesn’t stop the pressure on the toe. I’m trying several things, but mostly plasters!
Black toenail badge confirmed!
However, what I have now is mystifying me...
Fourth toe out from my big toe on my right foot. The outer edge just back from the cuticle is red and incredibly painful when pressure is applied. However there’s no blister, no broken skin and the toenail doesn’t appear to be in growing. Does anyone have any idea what this may be?
I bought new Nike workout shoes so I’m good now. 👍
i prefer Joe Nimble shoes !
nail are very strange and very complicated
You can also just get them surgically removed !
TIL that "Chiropodist" is a precursor term for Podiatrist.
Guys this video really gave a lot of tips but Isn't that wrong to go with a waterproof pair? How will the aur inside the sweat inside will go out and fresh air will go in? It can also cause restriction of blood flow and resulting pimples and acnes on your feet, which is horrible don't do that :)
Just heat a pin up and have some fun =) Enjoy
Mine shot blood in my face ...
I got black toenails some time after I started running, it happened when I started to increase the weekly mileage (when I started training for a half marathon). Hopefully it was mild and went away quickly. Getting the right shoes and the right size goes a long way to solve this problem, and this sometimes require a bit of trial and error. Also do not increase your weekly mileage too much too quickly, be patient with yourself.
Is it dangerous??
Yes 🙈🙈🙈
Compression socks give me black toenails. 👣
Also cut your toe nails straight across
I run many miles never had falling or black toe nails , just need good shoes and groomed nails to avoid issues. If you have issues try a different shoe. But I guess everyone is different
i wonder how many new subscribers from people with foot fetishes GTN obtained from this video? 🤣🤣
how did you overlook the obvious advice, cut your nails! treat your self to a nail pedicure.
i'd be interested in a similar video for nipple chafe :S anything over 10k and I end up with one painful one.
You must have missed the part I mentioned keeping your nails trimmed.
Tight fit shirt saves your nipples. Loose shirt that moves constantly up and down on you is gonna chafe the nipples more easily.
☝🏼
3 felt down after my asphalt 50K🤣
I tried to watch, but only got to 1min 20 sec 🤮
