Step 4: Know the basics when it comes to fusing mortar rack. I will offer a few tips and show you some of the racks that I will be shooting this July 4th.

I saw this video about 3 years ago and I'm going to use this technique to slow fuse a couple of milk crate racks for a small budget show. However I think it's going to be a good idea for me to cut the fuse coming from the shells to help slow down the show and not use so much slow visco. I think that will help clean it up a bit. Good video and that's nice to have something to come back to. I'll put up a video of how it all comes out. Thanks again
I found with quick fuss there's a pass fire problem, use tape this traps flame and heat guarantees ignition every time. Cover racks with aluminum foil, an ember could pre ignite the fuse, don't worry about taking foil off at shoot time it won't effect the trajectory. Great videos keep them rolling, thanks
Scott, Thanks for the feedback. This is my first year using quick fuse. I ran some tests with it and it definitely acts strange, and stay lit for 10-20 seconds after it burns. I have seen others using foil to protect fuses from embers. No need on a finale rack for sure since it will only take 2-3 seconds to ignite. My racks that I fused with safety fuse (30 sec/1') might be bit harder to cover just due to the fact that I put so much fuse in there to put time between shots. If you notice the fuse actually has loops in it in some place. Any suggestions on these racks to protect from embers??

The aluminum foil would protect the pre ignition from the embers of other fireworks before you ignited these. As for protecting rack, no worries I used crates like these for 12 years without a problem no melting or burning.

The motars in crates tend to bounce a lot, the plastic bottom acts like a spring board. I fixed that by placing a sheet of plywood on the bottom of the crate. First time making using a crate rack quick fused, the damn things where bouncing out of the crate lol
Yes, these racks have wood inside the bottom and on the outside. I the wood on the outside sticks out on each side about 3", I will then lay all the fireworks on a sheet of plywood and screw the racks down with a few small wood screws
I had some major issues with quick fuse this year had one 20 shot rack work perfectly the next 20 shot i had 7 that didnt get pass fire. i used cable tiea for both rack next time i quick fuse im gonna use tape.

I have had good success using leftover metal twist ties that I salvage from vegetables, etc.
That's what I do I order 500 pack for 7 dollars on amazon

Nice vid! I used zip ties before and found I'd have ignition failure between some ties. I tried a few different brands of fuse, not sure if it was the varying lacquer coating on the fuse or what, but I tried using yellow masking tape and I've stuck with that ever since. It seems to make the heat transfer better encasing the burn and haven't had a single fail to fire since. I just wrap each tie a couple of times with the tape and good to go. It's easier for me since I don't have feeling in one hand (not a firework accident lol) and it's tough to use the little zip ties. Great information in your vid, and big thanks for sharing the note on not cutting fuse with scissors! A lot of people don't know that. There was a July 4th house fire around 30 miles from here and the cause was the person setting up a rack in his garage was cutting quick fuse with scissors and it ignited. Only thing he could do was run. The house was a total loss. Thanks for your vids!

last year i put masking tape witch was a success but this year it would loose it grip so i zipped over the tape. i think the tape contains the fire a little to help fire transfer. i cut each shell fuse tip, many dont take fire well.
Had 150 shells and about 10-15 cakes. Had one shell not ignite this year... Pretty good rate of fire, but if one of those transfer fuses on my racks would have not made it, it would have ruined my show. Considering tape/zip tie combo next year

Wire cutters, no.
Use a Anvil Pruner with a copper or brass anvil.
They are the cheap. But the copper/brass anvil will never create a spark.
Never make or fuse a product in the house. If it ignites in minutes you will have hundreds of burning stars in that room as other shells explode.

Where did you purchase your pvc pipe for your mortar racks? Did you cut them to size? How inches tall was the wood plugs you put in the bottom of the mortar tubes?
James, this is not PVC, and I would not recommend PVC as it can cause injury of you have a shell explode inside. This is HDPE pipe I got from an oil field supply house. The plugs are about 1.5" thick.
I was wondering about using ABS. It has even more heat resistance and strength.
I would always recommend HDPE pipe because if you have a shell explore Insode the mortar, the mortar itself will not explode, it will just stretch or swell. Plastics will blow up and create shrapnel.

almost all online pyro stores will sell these with the plugs already installed.

Fiberglass is dangerous. Do not use fiberglass.
