Jesse is on tour right now! Check out a show and tell him Otis sent ya. www.jessedayton.com/ Here's the video of Jesse in the studio with Waylon. It's a beautiful document. ruclips.net/video/IM9Vfca7AeE/видео.htmlsi=hwt2nuCc4MHP895J
Thanks to Otis for getting the real stories out there and for letting the artists tell their stories and asking the right questions without being intrusive.
"The coolest guy in the history of Cool." This guy is great. Like so many of the top-level musicians you've interviewed, zero pretension, great humility.
“…cause if you get a bunch of great players together, and none of them have a good song between ‘em, it’s kind of, ya know, a waste of time.” Best quote I’ve heard in a long time. As an older player that learned that way too late, it’s gold I wished I’d found sooner. Belongs on a gold, guitar shaped plaque at the CMHoF.
Wow. Just unbelievable interview. What a cool man Mr. Dayton is. I hate to say I do not know much about him, but I am inspired to learn more after watching this. Especially to see it on the day Kris Kristofferson passed away, to hear Jesse say Kris jumped onto a bus as said "See you later Amigo!" What a great story to hear on this otherwise sad day.
Another great interview! You’re doing the Lord’s work here, Otis! (BTW, “Broke & Restless” has quickly become a standard with me and my songwriting friends.)
What a bitchin’ interview. Made me think of the Fred Eaglesmith tune - “Johnny Cash”. There’s a line in there that says, “Where were you in 1989/ When it looked like Johnny was on the decline.” Johnny still had a few cards up his sleeve… RIP in peace Kris. Like a good whiskey I needed to age before I could appreciate his goodness.
I was fortunate to catch Jessie on tour with Samantha Fish in Ann Arbor, and they lit up The Ark! I handed Jesse a cigarette case with a couple J's and a Shithouse Choir card inside, and I got a picture with them both! Thank you, Otis... you always deliver ❤️
Thank you Jesse for for these memories and stories and overlays when I was living in Portland in the seventies and eighties I had a friend that couldn't go see Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge they gave me tickets and I went and and Kristofferson was so drunk terrible concert but hell I was drunk and I was having a good time Rita divorced him right after that rumors was he was stepping out on her and I got to see Johnny Cash and June together and I got to see Waylon Jennings in a small B stage only about 40 of us we're out in the open field and we're all smoking pot and I met Waylon wonderful memories and by the way I'm sober today of 23 years thank you Otis love your Channel😢😅😊❤
I'm amazed that it took this long for someone to bring up Crook & Chase on the channel! If that've happened 10 years earlier he would have been on Ralph Emery's morning show on Channel 4 in Nashville.
Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler playing Poor Boy Blues gets my feet moving every time. Great interview of a man who can tell the stories of all my favorite singer/ songwriters.
Great interview. I noticed that Jesse is the second of your recent guests to make a record with Brennen Leigh, who you interviewed a while back. The other one was Ray Benson. I first heard of Brennen because Chris Scruggs produced her last album, and I learned about Chris Scruggs right here on Otis's channel.
Fantastic interview. I was so sad to hear that we had lost another one of my heroes but it did me some good listening to this. RIP Kris- you continue to be an inspiration.
This turned a horrible Monday into a wonderful chill cool Monday evening. Thank you for these great videos 🙏 So dang awesome ❤just subbed to Dayton’s channel. Please keep em coming. I ain’t one to blow smoke especially at strangers; Yall are fantastic story tellers
A new perspective on Waylon for me. And Johnny Cash as well. Very insightful rumination on these guys and the music they played. I really appreciated Jesse Dayton’s thoughts. Thanks!
These are getting Better and Better because they're getting deeper and deeper. Love the "analytical" aspect of musicians taking the story apart and laying it out like a car engine on a table.
Otis thank you so much for not censoring language on your channel like so many other great channels are letting YT make them do....much respect. brother ✊✊👊👊
Jesse Dayton's mention of musicians listening to other musicians very far from their own reminds me of an interview with singer Mel Torme (classy pop, jazz), circa 1981. He mentioned listening to Foreigner's new "4" album, I believe, and said he really dug it. What's so interesting to me is that I liked Foreigner and rock then, yet later came to appreciate singers like Torme. I saw him perform many years later, and was blown away.
Even before I had heard of Jesse I saw his name on a sign at a small joint a mile from my house, called Live Wire (in Chicago). I remembered that later and checked out 'Daddy Was A Bad Ass' on YT. I said, All right, I can dig that, and listened to his other stuff. Yeah he certainly is raw in comparison, but he by no means disgusts me!
I dunno Otis, maybe i need to play my guitar more and watch fewer vids, but you are a historian teaching vignettes of very human, completely important stories of people who really matter. People who are real and constantly reaching deep into this day to day swirl of life and holding up black and white sketches of what it means to be alive. Thank you, Otis.
This is a music man of experience. “10,000 hours on the bandstand and knowing instinctual song structure……..” Rock on good Sir Otis, and thank you for sharing
This is all really great!! thanks for this. Love the capo on the wrong fret story!!!! And Jesse is spot on with the whole songwriter thing, as far as how progressive Waylon and Cash were.
Otis. Totally speaking truth here, you are doing the Lord's work. Being a longtime Bay Area Talent Buyer - I like ti tell my stories. And I love that you seek those out. Thank you.
Anyone from Texas has been in a bar Jesse has played. He’s made a living playing all over the state for decades and he has a completely original style and puts on a fabulous show. He’s worked behind the scenes with many big names and he’s helped many smaller names get really big. He’s right about Waylon recording whatever songs Waylon liked, regardless of genre. Jimmy Webb, Shake Russell, Mickey Newbury, Billy Joe Shaver, etc. If you had a great song, Waylon would sing it. Jesse Dayton is a great story teller.

We heard about how to "Poltzerize" a song and now we've heard "Waylonize". I like when a proper noun gets turned into a verb.
