In the late 80's I was in training with Wink Tyler at ARS. After completing Wink's courses he sent me to Arlan Studio to see if Stewart might have some work for me. While I waited to speak with him I felt someone come up behind me and as I turned slightly to see who it was I found that I had look up and up and to my surprise it was Ray. Have never forgotten that day. I've been a long time fan of Asleep At The Wheel. Thanks for all the great music Ray. Keep on truckin'. 🎸🎶
1976. Santa Cruz Civic. The Wheel plays a benefit for community radio KUSP FM. Thanks Ray, and cheers from the Micronesia Blues Society on the island of Guam.
The first time I saw (or even heard of) the Wheel was in Bismarck, ND on the Spring 2000 tour with Bob Dylan that Ray talks about at the beginning. Asleep at the Wheel blew me away. What a tight band.
Hell Yes, extremely excited to watch this LEGEND, I know he’s not dead. Listen how crisp his mind is, I know he’s got years of stories of back stage, back street, and after hour shit. Enough, I need to shut up and LISTEN ! ! !
I worked for ray( as did my brother and eldest son) and ray knows everyone. First time I met Willie Ray introduced me as an old beer hippie from San Marcos. Which was true but I was mortified. Lucky for me ibeing a beer hippie from San Marcos isnt a bad thing to Willie . I love those guys
Great Video, there will nevva be people in the country music like this again!!! I'm an old Vietnam Era Vet and grew up listening to the Greatest Music ❤!!!
What a treat to hear Roy talk about the good ol' days. Saw Asleep and Commander Cody in the early 70' at the fairgrounds in Eugene, Oregon. Been a fan ever since. Might have rocked with Asleep at the Wheel more times than any other band in the last 50 years. Thanks a bunch!
The funny thing about asleep at the wheel is they are a band of no time when I heard them in the 90s I assumed they were just a new band because they sounded like they were from the 50s. These interviews with Ray are priceless
Have loved every version of Asleep at the Wheel since I first heard tracks on KFAT-FM in Gilroy, California back in the 70s. When I heard "ain't nobody here but us chickens" I was hooked for life. Ray Benson is a national treasure.

This guy has recorded a commentary on Truefire which I believe is titled "Practice What You Don't Know" which is just as insightful as this interview. He always rides at least one rail that is philosophical and the other rail is purely practical. That to me is the true essence of Country Music.
Great stuff. ... Thanks fellas. Also, for whatever it's worth, that Jimmy Vaughn guest spot show went very well. ... Is considered amongst fans as one of Dylan's best modern shows .... Highly recommend tracking it on down & giving it a listen - Search YT with, Bob Dylan April 6, 2024, & it'll appear. Thanks again & best wishes out there
Heard Ray do Roly Poly at the state fair and first thing I saw after their set was a 10yo roly poly that won a blue ribbon in a pie eating contest. Sometimes the universe surprises you with synchronicity.
hee hee i make fun of Mick in that clip cuz he cant pronuncne Waylons last name he calls him Jenning not Jennings lol love em of course.....came acrost again recently the thesis that from about 68 or 9....Beggas Banquet into the early 70s for several albums the best american abnd were the Stones lol PS Shiny Kev and I were talking about you brother Otis and Ray him being from Philly his look and these great clips thanks!
25:54 hey man, you might think no one cares. Put it out online and see how many of us come out of the woodwork to save these old places with so many memories.

fantastic
Ray described the atmosphere of the early ‘70’s on Music Row really well. I was honored to meet him a few years ago in Meridian, Mississippi.
I say this with the upmost respect to every other guest you’ve had on this channel but Ray is by far the most engaging, interesting, and insightful.

Great job guys. Love the history lessons of our old favorite performers. So interesting, enlightening and fun.

My wife and I are going to see him and Asleep at the Wheel in Greenville, TX on December 20. Can't wait!

I’d like a playlist of the people referred here. I’d like to know their names and a short bio so a casual listener can connect the dots. Just my $.02

Melre was always one of my farvoite sniggers.
