    I wish we did this type of work in the US. Crappy products that make things faster is what we do here and it gets depressing sometimes. One of the GCs I contract with buys the cheapest possible windows hes allowed to and sells the house to unsuspecting people who dont know the difference. I hate installing them cause no matter how good if a job you do its still junk being sold as gold for more than it should be. This man must be proud of what hes done in his life or atleast I hope he is

    What strikes me the most is the apparent collectedness and confidence with which he works. As an amateur woodworker, I aspire to his level should I ever have the opportunity to build a home. I also very much like his style of plane and chisels. This style of block plane I have never seen for sale in my country, the chisels are available but at insane prices.

      also, i noted that the lumber quality in building supply stores in Finland is much superior to the average German lumber in their Baumärkte...maybe because the Nordic folks have so much more visible wood in their houses? in Norway, also?

      Because they are asked and taught to do different work, with different/inferior material, at a different pace for a different market. Where did all the craftsmen go? People stopped paying for it so it naturally declined. Cost is a major factor. If UK customers started demanding this kind of work, it would come back. Craftsmen still exist, they often work in restoration.

      There is no place like the US and no people like the Americans.
      In fact… There is no place like (insert country) and no people like the (insert respective people).
      I’ve lived in Japan for 30 years. And there are people like this guy. But there are far more people not like this guy. I bought a house shortly after I came here. And looked at many houses. It took a while before I found a place that I felt could build our house. This company offered two different building styles, at least, for the framing work. One was more traditional Japanese, and the other word was the use of 2x4 made from Canadian fir. The 2 x 4 method was about another $15,000 more expensive and we chose that technique. This company had houses and Kobe when that major earthquake hit and none of them suffered any damage whatsoever. The thing that’s different there between the Japanese and American style framing with 2x4s. One is that the Canadian fir is some of the clearest 2 x 4 material I’ve ever seen and I for a while as a carpenter after graduating college. Second, is they heat up that nail gun because they use more nails and I’ve ever seen used an American house.
      Major companies have a high degree of quality control, and employees must conform to the rules and regulations of the company. Expectations are high But the smaller companies are a different matter. Many that I’ve seen are shoddy. Many have a “that’s good enough“ attitude.
      The guy in this clip is building a high-end house. Many common, if not most, houses now are modular design with wall panels, simply being hoisted up by crane in the linked together. Houses that are built by post and beam method are almost exclusively built with pre-cut post and beams. Those intricate joints are cut at a factory, loaded on a truck and sent to the job site. And many times the joints are not as intricate as what you see in true custom work.
      There are differences in cultures throughout the world, and Japan definitely has its own special blend. I don’t get to get carried away over this guy because there’s not a lot of people like him and and only a small percentage of the houses are built by guys like him.
      Oh, and those saws are nice! I use them all the time. They cut on the pull stroke, not the push. And the blades are replaceable.

      @liquidsnake6879 Год назад

      @@Zerpersande "There is no place like the US and no people like the Americans."
      Just go anywhere in western Europe lol in that case though it's reversed it's the Europeans that are just like the Americans due to cultural influence and not the other way around.
      It's actually quite rare for a country to be so culturally homogenous that it achieves any recognisably unique aura, most of the time they're like America, meeting halls where you can find any culture represented but nothing is actually unique and widespread enough to be characteristically American and sure i understand not everyone is like this, but they don't all need to be, just a sufficiently visible amount, in America and Europe you don't get this effect due to the higher focus on individualism

    I built trade show exhibits and displays for about 7 years and it always bummed me out knowing the stuff would be thrown away in a few years. Once I spent a month building solid fur and fur veneered stage components and yard furniture for Bill Gates because he was having a birthday party, for the wife who left him later and he (his employees) used it for a day and payed the extra fee to have it taken to the dump instead of having it disassembled and reused. Japan has reverence for craftsman, America sold the public on inferior product and replaced us with third world labor. Now a guy gluing plastic pipes together makes 3x what a skilled craftsmen can.

      I’d say “Only Bill Gates would pull a stunt like that”, but at this point, that level of hypocrisy by the entire “left” and their so-called “reverence” for the environment (or people’s hard-work, dedication, craftsmanship, or just beauty) is non-existent. They truly care about absolutely nothing but their own power, and sensational need to control people. But, I digress. I agree with you on the waste. I’d have loved to have seen those builds.
