nice vid..the teleportation thing is kinda like training wheels for new vr users to help with simulation sickness. The vast majority of regular vr users will be using normal smooth locomotion (like in the second clip) For most, the sickness is temporary untill your brain adapts.
If you have never been in a VR enviroment before the bigest thing that doesnt translate in a video is the scaling of the world, its like you are actually in there and is usually the "aha" moment when people first put on the headset
I never understand how people get the hang motion in VR.
I'm a newcomer, and I'm starting to get used to it, but I've been playing for weeks, and I still get nauseous after 5 minutes of motion. I'm really glad Alyx has so many options to fit people's comfort.
"Teleportation" in VR for people who get sick after few minutes in headset. It has to do something with motion sickness, when brain does not compute why your eyes "see" you moving but everything else says that you standing still. It's rather "feature" than main mode of transportation.
Always hyped to see your videos guys.
Thank you for that! I had no idea what was going on. Lol! It makes so much sense now. -Rudy
@Matthew Johnston It is actually true, a lot of people, even now when VR is kinda limited (expensive) about 50-60% getting sick during session. I'm the lucky one :P
This is definitely the game to get VR for.
Puffycheeks I’m not even a fan of the half life series and I agree 100%
being able to grab things from a distance is a feature only in some VR games such as Boneworks where you basically use the force to grab things, but in Half-Life: Alyx they did this by making Gravity Gloves that is basically a Gravity Gun for your hands.
I think this is potential GotY material. The amount of polish and detail for a VR game is insane. Too bad I don't have the equipment though. I'll have to wait for a possible PS5 port for Sony's next VR headset. I'm strictly a console player, so even that demands a lot of my wallet.
Won't happen for PS5 since it doesn't meet min hardware requirements for legit VR. Maybe if there is a PS5 Pro with more modern hardware may be able to do it. Won't happen for many years though. Sony would also need to build a VR kits that can do room-scale and meet presence. Recent Sony patents can be a clue to that happening one day.
Sell the peasant-box and get yourself a PC. The upfront cost is a bit more, but you spend far less long-term. Also, legit VR is WORTH IT.
It is in my opinion so hard GOTY 2020 BUT the VR-Aspect held it back (which is just sad actually because it is one of the most revolutionary games release this decade)
I think it is actually very likely that it will be a day 1 title for PSVR2 whenever that comes out for PS5
It's just the 0:50 mark and i'm already glad i clicked on this reaction. You don't hear headcrabs being called crab heads every day y'know.
😂🤣😂🤣😂. I'm here for your entertainment. -Rudy
this is set between HL1 and HL2 and yes, the gravity gloves are meant to be early versions of the gravity gun tech, they are much much less powerful though, you're not gonna be using the gloves to lift heavy objects and blast them long distance.
grabbing things from a distance is a common VR mechanic, it avoids people having to bend over and move around to grab every little thing, which can get tiring when you're playing for hours, and also makes it easier when you're playing seated. in this case they made it into an integral game mechanic, and fit it into the lore of the game with the gravity gloves.
the 3 videos you watched were actually each showing off one method of movement, teleport, smooth and dash.
smooth locomotion is where you move around with a stick same as any game, that is the way most people play VR games.
teleport is the most comfortable way to play for people who get motion sickness, you point where you go, the screen goes black, and then you are standing where you pointed, no visible movement.
the 3rd mode is a bit of a hybrid, called dash, it is basically teleport, but instead of the screen going black, you sort of quick dash to the location, if you rewatch a bit of each video and pay attention you will see the difference with each, in the end which ever way to play, after a little while they all feel like second nature and you dont notice that much.
being valve, they put a lot of work into all the movement modes, whichever way you play, you are traversing the game world, you cannot teleport past things that a player using smooth locomotion could not move past, you cannot skip stuff by teleporting, you cannot sneak past an enemy by teleporting from cover to cover, the enemies will see you as though you had walked across that space.
the amazing thing is this game has been designed to be super easy and welcoming for people completely new to VR, but is also the pinnacle of current VR tech and a full deep game with lots of complex VR interaction. so it is also super exciting for those of us that are long time veteran VR players, often games are one, or the other. so you should have a great time with HL:A even being totally new to VR. they have also put a lot of effort into making sure it works well with every major PCVR headset out there, it has not been made just to work well on their own hardware.
interactivity is VR at large, but this game takes it to a next level. everything you are seeing is next gen af
I dig! -Rudy
The teleporting is just one mode of movement you can pick from. It's the best one if you're prone to motion sickness. As for grabbing things from a distance, that's a pretty standard feature of VR games for accessibility since not everyone has a huge room. One other thing I noticed was that you thought the reloading of the shotgun was an animation, it isn't. That's the player doing everything
The animation of the shells going into the gun is done by the player?! That's crazy! -Rudy
@ Yes, everything you see apart from the cutscenes, is made by the player. That is how vr works, you should really try it
@@matansornothing1761 Dang! Excuse me for sleeping under a rock. Lol. That's mind blowing immersion. -Rudy
@ The shells automatically going into the gun is an upgrade you can purchase, so that part is an animation. In the first and second trailer, that's the player manually reloading the gun. It seems as if the gameplay videos are in the order of the game progression.

@ You can also see where you purchase gun upgrades in the first trailer
If you haven’t tried VR recently you really owe yourself a go at it. Find a local VR meetup and jump into recent HMDs and content. Start w easy/comfortable experiences first, e.g. Beat Saber. HL: Alyx has incorporated all the learnings from the last four years or so. Lots of options for comfort (and accessibility) in it and the polish Valve seems to have put in it are nothing short of epic. I’ve been a software dev for 30 years and VR is the first truly game changing tech I’ve seen. We still have a ways to go but the current state of the art is absolutely worth investing in. Thanks for your comments/reaction. 👍🏽
Thank Alan! I appreciate the insight on everything. I'd definitely like to try it out and experience it in person. -Rudy
You need to buy a headset since your PC is VR ready :)
Seems like you would enjoy VR tbh
8:33 i know right, i think this going to be succc because gordon voice is so iconic you cant replace it. Shame on you valve!
gordon's voice actor died in a freak train accident :(
1:53 yes you can normally walk in real life to controll the game and move, crouch or lie down etc .
If you had a big enough room you could play the entire game just walking in real life.
Problem is alot of people have small rooms so the teleport/joyststick walking is needed.
for the reactor, since he had questions about teleporting - ruclips.net/video/9RgfvBnWHuM/видео.html
Thanks! A lot of other comments have shown some light on the matter. -Rudy
I like to think of 'teleportation' as 'Blink' from the Dishonored games.
@@grichard1585 that's actually a pretty good way to think about it. And it makes sense. -Rudy
I mean, the trailer looks great but I'm hoping Valve is as honest as they were before and the game turns out as such. I'll expect downgrades in lighting, animations, and the other sorts. If this turns out to be the actual result.... VR is going places.
It's 4 months later and there were no downgrades from these videos in the actual game
Looks good.
Kind of ruins some moments because you keep asking if it that's normal in vr or not. Why not just appreciate it for what it is instead of second guessing if its alright to appreciate it because its a first in vr or not.
Because every time we are surprised, someone online tells us that it's "not a first for VR!" BUT then we have comments like yours... Lol can't please everyone. - Onix
@ There's nothing wrong with being impressed with something if it's the first time you see it. The comments will come and correct you, but that's you're genuine first reaction to it. They can tell you it's already normal in VR afterwards in the comments and that's cool. What's not is you're genuine first impressions getting ruined because you're second guessing everytime. Just react to the moment and let the comments comment about it later.
8:33 I‘m wondering how this would affect immersion in a vr title. Also a shame it’s not the original voice actress of Alyx.
That's a fair point. Hopefully it won't be like Aloy In Horizon Zero Dawn. -Rudy
It would have been nice to have the original voice of Alex. But she is at least 16 years older in real life. You have to bear in mind that this is set before Half-Life 2 so she is even younger than Alex in Half-Life 2. Her voice needs to represent this.
It had to be Half Life: Alyx instead of Half Life 3 because the original voice actor for gordon died tragically, and there's just no way to replace that voice
Wish this was on psvr
Yup. Would definitely make it somewhat easier to swallow. -Rudy
Nah, psvr is by far the worst "VR" system. I wouldn't actually call it "VR" since it can't reach presence and can't do room-scale. I would recommend against it. That system pushes people away from legit VR.
