even joeys translated version of what yoel says is remarkably casual and JOEY. there are alot of phases that yoel says more formally
Yoels Spanish: " You always have to remember, you're an apprentice everyday "
Joeys translation: "You're a student everyday dawg"

To be fair Joey's spanish is not the best, and I mean like he's on that 90-95% level of dominance but that other 5% is the advantage that rarely someone that learns any other language (whichever it is) can learn, something that doesn't come with flash cards or text books but with being around that language 24/7. Take Joe's podcast with this 2 guys as an example and sometimes when Yoel said something Joey was either clueless or didn't get what he was trying to say or completely changed the meaning of the sentence, even down to simple words that he have never heard.

Jay Boogie This example is a bad one, but it does matter. Mistranslations can either (best case) lose a lot of nuance, or (worst case) be just plain wrong. Joe’s interview had both cases.

    • @miguela2790

@@gmt1223 I do feel like he uses some words that are completely unnatural as you can see that Yoel is hella cuban (Obviously way more cuban than joey) and he doesn't need to use a lot of the flamboyant word that joey does use. It could be that as he is not actually cuban but only has cuban roots he has this weird almost stereothyped cuban way of talking and he doesn't notice it but yes, I think that most likely he's trying a bit too hard to sound cool.

    • @aim6613
      @aim6613 5 лет назад +3

I honestly don't think he's trying too hard to sound cool. I just don't think he really knows that much Spanish too well, at least not to have a comfortable conversation. He misinterprets some words which sound similar and you'd think have the same meaning, but really don't. He knows enough to get the general point across in translation.

Here is a full translation for Uncle Joey and Yoel's podcast, maybe some of you guys would like to get a closer look at how it went down : ) enjoyWell
my man, yoel is a person who was born and raised in a humble town in pinar del rio called cuba
libre, people call it the rancho, I’m from there born and raise, raised like
all Cubans very humble, no shows on, playing baseball, running in the rain. Just
like all the kids in Cuba, I am not different than any of the kids from Cuba. I
always staying surrounded with my people. There was never any race issues,
white, black whatever, it was an amazing time those days, everyone was the
same, therefore there were no “oh they have more money than me therefore they
are better” so on so on. For everyone the most important thing was their
relationships with one another as a community. I have 3 sisters and 4 brothers,
my father was an amateur boxer, Number 3 in Cuba at the time, his full time gig
was a boxer for the national team at the Olympic center. Never really went to
the Olympic since he was number three. In those times we have magnificent
boxers in Cuba, and everyone knew our number one guy I his division Jose Gomez,
who was an amazing guy, the number2 guy was bernardo coma and no3 was my father. If those two men were not in the way my
father could have been number one, but he had two BADass men in the way. I’ve always wanted to box but my father did
not want that for me, he always said “I don’t really want you to follow my
footsteps” “”maybe try another sport” and then I came across a wrestling coach
who told me that I had a talent for wrestling, in the meantime though I tried a
lot of sports like baseball. But finally I choose wrestling; the coach told me
“your family has wrestling and boxers, that is what you are meant to do.” Cuba has a special system; they called it the
pyramid system that works very well. In this system they take you into sports
at an early age, I was 8 years old when I started. JOEY:
“and then when as you grow, cities like Pinar del rio, would go against Camaguey?”

    • @RonandBia
      @RonandBia 6 лет назад

?” Joel: yea, the system begins through neighborhood,
or “houses” and as you continue to succeed, you go and compete nationals,
internationals, so on. When I was 18
years old, I was part of the JR national teams, which was a change of life than
what I grew up as. In Cuba, as you join the national team, then you get better
“treatment” compared to the rest of the Cuban populations, you get more
adequate care. Just like everywhere else, the athletes are a priority. I really
feel that God gives the talent to the people and if you go to Cuba today, you
can see it. I truly feel that god gave Cuban people the Sports talent. I see
people with tons of talent to perform any sport; the other part of it is the
system that Cuban has developed for sports are magnificent. In Cuba they have a
magnificent way to train sports. Joey: when I was young in Cuba I was a
“karate guy” a Judoka- people would tell me that in Cuba Jude was the SHIT,
they would send you to japan to train or something like that?” Yoel: yea
it’s true, but you know this is true everywhere in the world, like the USA for
example, the wrestling team, they would send their team to Russia for 2or3
month, this is done in every country to help the athletes get more
experience. But I believe that the
essence that makes the Cuban sportsman’s superior is that Gift given from
God. Same as that Cubans are happy
people you know, that just comes with being a Cuban. If you were to take 3 to 5
people from Brazil, 3 will play very good football. That’s just their god given
talent to play football. Take 3,4,10 people from Jamaica for track, believe me
5 to 6 will be very good athletes. Joey:” in the summer back in the day in
the offseason the American baseball players would go train in Cuba, you know
metal sharpens metal. When you would wrestle in Cuba how many hours would you
train? No distraction no TV no internet.” Yoel:
it was 100% training and studying, then you go back to your house, you eat,
and then back to training and this is very depending on your age. I would only go home for Saturdays and
Sundays but besides that you lived in the schools. Stay in school M-F, there you would train, go to regular
classes, they would feed you. Also being
a wrestler it kept me from having to take part of the mandatory military
service. At 32-33 years old I decided to
leave Cuba because I wanted a better life for my family, I wanted to do mma and
I had dreams for my family.

    • @RonandBia
      @RonandBia 6 лет назад

      I
couldn’t make it to the ufc in Cuba. When you want to get to a better level or
stage in your life you have to go after it, you can’t just stay in the same
place. If you stay surrounded by the same environment there everything stays
the same, people need to venture out to where there are better options, and the
best option for me was to get out of Cuba, you have to follow your dream. In Cuba people watch MMA, I would watch old
school MMA, vale tudo, also and when it was referred to Ultimate fighter, Tank abbot’s
era. All those things would Filter down
to the Cuban people through means of DVD’s, sometimes people that would come
into cuba from others country’s would bring this dvds and people would rip it
and copy it and pass it down. When I used to watch this I would say, “I can do
this, not only can I do this, I can be the best at this.” The time I decided to leave cuba I said to
myself “well my time here in cuba has come to an end, im gonna start my life
outside of cuba.” I told a selected few in cuba that I was planning on leaving.
People that I was was very close to. I told them “this is what I need to do for
my people and family, I might achieve this thing im seeking or maybe I won’t
but im gonna risk my life to try to reach It.” im gonna do everything I can to
reach my dream and be a champ, train like a crazy person. That’s when I went to train in Germany with
the national Cuban team, and when I won the grand prix, I called my little
brother who is a boxer in Germany and told him “ listen, I don’t want to go
back to cuba” he said “are you sure?” to told em “yea im never going g
back” in Germany I continued wrestling,
until one day I saw a MMA competition they were having and I told me self im
going, even though I never had training I knew that I could fight and not only
could I fight, but I could win. I stayed in Germany for 6 years, and it took 11
years to see my family in Cuba. My son who stays in Cuba has a different mom
who we split up and never really talked after that. But the mother of my children I met in
Germany, she is CUBANA-GERMAN. LEE’S QUESTION ABOUT LOVE FOR CUBA BUT
WANTING TO GET OUT: I love cuba, I have a passion and love for my country,
if you ask people who go through an exodus of their country, if they love their
country, they say “ yea I love my country” no one says the opposite. I love my people, I love my country, I love
the people I played with when I was I kid, when I go to cuba now, I cry, I see
this people and I cry, you know, it just becomes part of your essence. If someone says I don’t love my country you
are an empty man, you are nothing, a nobody. Joey: when you were a kid did you ever thing about leaving Cuba? Yoel: never! When you are born you say,
“Im was born here I will die here! In this same house, when you are born you
look to the left, you look to the right and you see your mother your father,
sister, brother your entire family and you say this is my kingdom, this is all
I need.” In your mind you say I will die
here with my people, you don’t have this thought of I want to go out to another
house, you only think of “this” many years later. The same way happens when you grow and see
that your life pushed you to where you are now, if life pushes you down, you
push back for better. so then you move away from your parents’ home, because
you have a wife and a daughter, kids.
You make this move to improve the life of your kids not to improve your
living situation, but to improve theirs.
When you leave you parents’ home, you don’t think about going to another
house, to another house country city, language or culture. That’s why I say if
life pushes you, push it back, if life is not giving you things that you need
to give the best to your family, you have to find it where it is. JOEY: I know the suffering you been
through because all Cubans go through it. So then you are in Germany, you join
the first mma fight and did you win? YOEL:
I won, knockout. With no amateur fights, right into it, they
told me you cannot do amateur because you have Olympic background, so I was
like OMG, alright…. I was scared because never trained you know, im still
learning right now, im a pioneer im learning at the moment and I try to

    • @RonandBia
      @RonandBia 6 лет назад

learn something new every day, you’ll stop learning the day
you die and have the mind like the great architect says, mind of a child. JOEY: I always talk about the mentality of people
who come over from other countries, the mentality is different, I always have
to be doing something that lead me to my goal, all those years doing drugs and
all fucked up, it lead me to become a comic, I was arrested and all that
madness lead me here. Yoel: I went to strike force first, a
very hard fight with the ex champ, I believe he had recently lost his title,
Rafael fejiao, let me tell you, like I say, everything I see in life is
positive, because if I won this fight you know who would have been my next
fight, Sanderson, he would have been the next fight and would of destroyed me.
Till recently he is undefeated, he had experience, he would of fucked up my
career, one hit in the jaw my jaw wouldn’t of been the same and yea I thank god
for doing that. after Rafael I went to the ufc, after 2 years of not fighting
for a neck surgery and god was good: like always he allowed the ufc to see good
in me, after 1 fight in strickeforce.
The ufc took over strickeforce about 1 month after my fight and they
knew that I WAS GOING to have surgery, not even had it yet. And they still
said, ok “he is coming from a knockout loss and he is gonna have surgery who
god knows if he is going to fight again”, they still said, “ ok ill pay for the
surgery, and ill still take him”
I took a 2 year of rehab and shortly after the operation 4
months after I started to train, normally people take 1 year just to run after
the operation, and after 4 months I was already hitting pads, I felt my neck
get stiff and tense, but I was my lifes financial support. So yea I get the
operation and 4 months after I began training, after I started training 7
months they called me for the first fight. Vs Clifford star, and thanks god I
won knockout of the night. And here we
are moving forward. And yea I still love Cuba and will love it till I day, im
Cuban. I still have a son, my parent’s
sister’s brothers and friends and history. Even though im outside of Cuba im
still makes history in Cuba. JOEY: did
you ever meet Fidel? Yoel: Yea I met
him, I shake his hand and hug him and all, when I was 22 years old. I became a champ at 20 years old. And when I
won the champ It was 1999, I at that point had other medals, in the 2000 Sydney
Olympics won silver. Fidel told me congratulations, all the athletes in cuba I
was always top 10 in cuba including all other sports athletes. But in Cuba to
make it it’s a whole another world. JOEY: ASKS ABOUT STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN: YOEL:
I heard stories of that, im only 41 years old I dint live it, but I know about
it. In cuba now u hear music of
everyone, Jay-z it doesn’t matter. Some
places now have internet they have it in sections, like cafes. And thankfully
god has kept my family healthy and everyone is doing good.
      JOEY:
TALKS ABOUT HAVING SADNESS: YOEL: I understand what you are saying because
it happens to me too, I also go through sadness, and it doesn’t matter if u
leave at an early age, do you know Moises history in the bible, Moises doesn’t
remember nothing about his family, you left cuba at 3, but Moises mom put
Moises in his basket but in his soul he loved his Jewish people. He saw a
Egyptian hitting Israelite and he felt bad because he saw of course a human hit
a human but also because he knew that that was his people. And that’s what is
happening to you, you feel sad because you feel like you left a piece of you
behind. You know sometimes you don’t have to say something because a gesture
says more than a thousand words. You see her you hug her and cry and that says
it all, because what can you say? You don’t have anything to say but you have
to “do” things like hug her because, you haven’t hugged her for 52 years, there
is no point in saying anything, you should just hug her for the amount of time
you haven’t been able to, that’s it. JOEY talks about not knowing how rough
Cubans had it until 1985. YOEL: this is the biggest problems humans have in
their spirit, that we don’t want to forget the past, you

    • @RonandBia
      @RonandBia 6 лет назад +1

have to forgive the people, you have to forgive and forget,
the worse diseases is hate. And this is a way we are born, and because the
route of life we will die. This was not something that god planned out, it was
our choice to separate from god and because of that we die. Because of that choice its normal to get
sick, to catch a cold a headache a knee pain a cough just like everything else
being normal, sanity and cures. June 8th
im fighting for the championship and im blessed, I tell god thank you for this
opportunity and this talent, you’ve placed me in this route and I take it with
love and all certainty that im here because you want me here, “take me there
and I’ll go” -- People are gonna have to
pay to see what’s gonna be different in this fight. Every day it’s a different
day, but I trust in god that im gonna be not how I feel now, but better and now
I feel good I feel good im weighing 208lbs.
LEE ASKS ABOUT HOW DOES HE TAKES
HIS FIGHTS WITH SO MUCH PRESSURE FROM HIS “PEOPLE”
YOEL: I was gonna tell you that you are talking
about my attitude but you have the same as me.
      JOEY:I like when
people tell me that I cant do something, that’s what gets my dick HARD.
      Joey: this is what
he wants to eat (lee), he wants to move to Miami for this
      -------I got hungry
as fuck watching the food so I just had to stop and get me a pan con croquette ;)
