No joke about the punching a hole in the filter. I ignored that bit of advice and it was a huge mess. Trust me, punch a hole in the filter and let that drain.😂😂😂
I love doing my own oil changes. Nice addition with the magnet. Never thought about that one. Those quick change plugs make me a bit nervous, but I can definitely see their benefit.
Nice video. Love the quick change valve - but they do have a downside if folks live on a rutted or rocky road: the valve hangs lower than the stock plug which can make it vulnerable to road debris. One good hit and oil can escape. Take care.
That looks difficult 🤨 You are brave tackling that project in this heat. Let us know if ya need anything while Yvonne is gone or if you just need some company. 😃
Thanks for the vid. I've always had the dealer I bought my truck from change the oil but I have been contemplating starting to do it myself. Actually the most they ever charge me was about $78 so it's not much of a money saver doing it myself. You didn't show how you get your oil filter off. I was wondering how difficult that is on one of these powerstrokes. I've only done oil changes on my Harleys and lawn equipment.
It’s pretty easy to get the filter off, I’ve been using the same filter wrench on my 7.3 for years and it helps a lot. The grips don’t get too close to each other because of the filter size, but if you squeeze it together it gets tight enough on the filter to hold it while you spin. I usually give it about 4 or 5 small turns with the wrench until it’s loose enough to spin by hand. (Side note, I have small hands and probably don’t have the arm and grip strength that a normal person should)
Bill - Great points. I do the same notations on my car and house air filters. I only changed my cars' oil 2x in my life and decided I'd just pay to have it done. Is that plug metal or plastic? I've never heard of it and may try that because it costs me an arm and leg to have my oil changed with synthetic oil. Thanks for the info. Also, some municipalities recycle used oil at the solid waste centers.
@@theupsideofdownsizing Thanks and you're welcome. Is that plug universal? I am really wanting to try this thing. My oil about due for a change. FYI I got that hitch on and am putting the video together now!
So what happens to the shavings that are attached to the inside of the oil pan when you remove the magnet. Next time you do an oil change and take that magnet off, now you have a lot of isolated metal shavings floating around your oil pan. I don’t like it. The magnet on the filter is ok because your throwing it away. Unless you plan on removing your oil pan each time and cleaning it, this is a very dumb idea. I would suggest buying two filter mags that wrap completely around the filter. They are very powerful and if you cut open your filter, you will see the metal particles completely trapped around the inside circumference. That’s the best way to trap metal particles.
@@charlesrutherford4785 NO. If he pulls the magnet there will be metal particles in the oil pan left behind and a simple oil change will not flush out ALL metal particles and debris. The only way to insure that there’s nothing left behind is to pull the pan and clean it. Just like they do with transmission pans.
@@ron4413 Well, I have 2 filter Mags on my filter and I’ve cut it open and found a lot of metal debris trapped on the inside wall of the filter. I’d rather it be trapped there than washing around in the oil.

Just use a sharpie to write the mileage on the inside of the windshield. It wipes off with rubbing alcohol.
Fumoto valve is sweet!
Great tips on the hose and magnet!
Congrats on breaking 1000 !!!!!
Nice tip with the magnet, never seen or heard that one before. =)
Thanks, obviously not my idea, but I know a good idea when I see one. 👍
That fumoto thing is the Man!
If you ask the O’Reilly’s cashier; they can give you a blank oil change sticker

You sound like Paul Harvey “good day” lol nice to see you like the t4 I love it as well!
Can also write the mileage on the bottom of the filter. Nice vid.
Thanks for watching. I keep the mileage noted on the windshield using a sharpie. It's an easier reference point for me than under the truck.

Funny how interesting piling up rocks and changing oil can be.

Is it important to warm up the truck prior. Like you had said you did

If he pulls the magnet before changing the oil, anything caught by the magnet inside the pan will drain out.

What magnet is this? From where?
I got it on Amazon. It's a rare earth magnet. Neodymium magnet. Available on eBay as well. Mine is about 3" long. Thanks for watching.
