I have been looking for this video for years. I am second owner, at 45000, and I now have 481000 miles on my truck. The few things that I have replaced in the truck would be, Water Pump, Alternator, Power Steering Pump and hose and Hydro-boost. It is a 6 speed, and is everything I could ask for. No real miss in the engine, just mileage and thinking about doing a full under cover rebuild. What would be the opinion should I open it, or leave it alone?
Start here: amzn.to/3AjMu33
This is the Archoil fuel additive and Oil additive. I absolutely swear by this stuff. Stiction is the issue with 7.3 and 6.0 injectors and the Archoil additive makes MAJOR improvements. I run a bottle in every oil change and a measured amount in my fuel at each fillup.
If it works don't fix it.
@@jacksmith730 lol, in my world if it ain't broke, then poke at it and fiddle with it until it breaks. Then fix it.
Hands down the best injector video out there. I was able to tackle a job i was scared to do alone, and save some money! Thanks!
Thanks man! Glad it helped out!
Best yet on injector replacement. Nice job and thanks.
Wow, thanks!
@@ProjectTimeGarage I’m subscribed 👍😎
Best 7.3 injector video so far.
Thanks!!
Thanks for your videos and responses to these comments. Update that might help some folks. Readers digest version! Truck smokes plumes, Powerstroke specialist says it failed compression test. Bad engine needs replaced $12,000. I seen your video and bought scanner. FORScan says # problem. Pulled injector and had it tested. It was over fueling at idle. Replaced one injector and truck no longer smokes.!!!! So your video and my gut instinct saved me 12 grand. So don’t openly trust mechanic shops. Not all are dishonest but not all are either. Good luck out there people!
Good catch - saved some $$$!
Love how he has a little pointer hand for this if all car mechanic videos had it, it would make things so much easier
The hand pointer is a muste for all repair videos.
My neighbor is a diesel mechanic he said it’s very crucial to clean the bore from any oil before installing. He said it could cause it not to seat and leak compression into the fuel
Yes, it's really important.
Need more people like you on youtube. Thanks for filming
Thank you!
Man I love your videos!!! I have never done injectors in my life. My 7.3 down needs a set, I was going to pay someone, you really motivated me to do myself. Ty sir!!!
Just take your time. It really isn't a bad job.
OMG.... AWESOME. FIRST TIME OPENING MY VSLVES ON MY 02 7.3 F350 AND CHANGING MY #8 INJECTOR. DEF HELPED ME DO THIS SCARY JOB! PRAYING MY ISSUES ARE FIXED POST REPAIR. HAVE CHIP AND MONITOR BUT DEF BUTING THE BLUETOOTH AND FORSCAN! DEF APPRECIATE AN AWESOME JOB YOU DID ON VIDE P. YOUR SOUND IS GOOD NOW.
Glad to help!
Great video. Really well explained and I loved that you made sure to show on camera the exact “movements” needed for removal of certain parts. Good stuff!
Thanks, glad it was helpful!
Im just about to wrap mine up. A couple of things that made my life easier. I used some much longer bolts with a nut and washer to replace the rear valve cover bolts. This way i didn't have to be a contortionist to tighten them back down. I also put the wiring harness on first, without the gasket. Then attached the gasket to the harness. This made it much easier especially on the driver's side.
Good info, thanks!
Great video! One addition. If replacing cups and injectors, put bucket at the tailpipe to collect the supersonic coolant and fuel mixture that will prove you have compression. Alternate plan is to have a bag of cat litter ready.
LOL, cat litter for the win!
Sir, This is by far one of the most informative video's I have seen on RUclips. Thanks for great content. I have a 7.3 that has an intermittent miss and suspect an injector issue. So the question is whether the Bluetooth device and app would help diagnose which injector is suspect?
Brad, thanks so much for the nice comment! I'm sincerely glad my content was useful. Regarding the Bluetooth, yes it will absolutely help you track down the suspect injector. The software is called ForScan Lite, it's free and available on the Google Play store. I have a link in the video description to the bluetooth OBDII connector I use. Other than that, you just need an Android device (phone, tablet, etc.)
Very descriptive review on multiple possible issues. Great detail and smooth explanation throughout the whole install. Great job 👏
Thank you sir. Much appreciated.
Love the details, was determined I needed a new set but turned out to be a bad internal relay in my fuse panel, I did a quick fix with a bypass and it runs great, I still plan on upgrading them with the truck being over 300k miles. I definitely didn’t think a 7.3 could suck fuel off suction to the point it’ll barely idle but it sure did, love the videos and hope future issues can be easily fixed
Where is this relay?
Sweet, that was a pleasant find for sure.
Fantastic walk through on diagnosing and fixing the injectors. Great work!
Glad it was helpful!
That truck has come a long way. I look forward to seeing more.
You will see a lot more of it.
Great job brother I just started really doing some work on mine 7.3 2001 it was a couple days work but that’s because of work lol looks like fun quick note anyone that’s even thinking of working on a 7.3 “ OVERHEAD CREEPER “ talk about needed lol thanks again brother great video
For sure. The Topside Creeper will save your bacon.
Thanks for the video! The tip with the 5/8 wrench on the injector hold down was very helpful!
Nice work. You're helping me look a whole lot smarter than I would otherwise be.
LOL, thanks. RUclips does the same for me quite often.
@@ProjectTimeGarage Heck, I just referenced back to your video this morning due to the no start after reassembly. Thanks for letting me know I gotta be patient rebuilding that high-pressure oil.
Great job on explaining the important details! I’m glad I found your video and keep on coming with a good content
Great vid👍 I'll be draining my oil rails and pulling glow plugs and injectors soon. Thanks👍👍
Good luck with it! Not a bad job at all.
Wow, best video I’ve found on this subject. Nice, clean explanation, great descriptions and useful tips….nice job and thanks for putting it all together!
Wow, thanks!
32:15 all i could see was the copenhagen reflection on the screen 😂 great video. Real informative. I'll definitely come back to this video when i dothe injectors on my 99 7.3 powerstroke
Yeah, my buddy likes his snuff.
This is most definitely not your first rodeo. Awesome video
Thanks!!
Man that was a awesome video, just purchased a 99 7.3 295,000 miles runs amazing except I'm getting harsh shifts and can't figure it out I'm definitely subscribing !!
Thank you for making this video.
My pleasure!
I have a 2001 F250 with the 7.3 that is at 578,000 miles. Here is a list of all the work that has been done on it. 1)Under valve cover wiring harnesses. 2)There is no 2....... That is all that has ever been done. The thing is a train. But as I'm nearing 600,000 miles I'm getting real nervous about all the luck I've had running out. Trying to learn as much as I can, but just wish I was more mechanically inclined.
600k. I'd say it's been a good 'un.
Outstanding video! love the little hand pointer.
The hand pointer makes the whole package come together.
Great Detail.
Thank you!
Love the video I have an F-350 7.3 super duty 1999 with only 100.000 on it and I just noticed Fuel in pools on top of the motor . Fun Right? Now I have to find out where the fuel is coming from! But I love watching these types of videos it really helps me when I have a problem! Thanks, I subbed!
I'm gonna place my bets on the Fuel Bowl seals. Riff Raff, Full Force, Sinister Diesel, etc. all sell a re-seal kit. It's not too hard to do.
@@ProjectTimeGarage I will take a look at it in a few days Like I said I don't use the trunk much anymore I am retired but I bought the trunk brand new and Love keeping it in good shape. If you think that is the problem I will surely be in touch with you about it! I replaced the glow plugs a while back and that is when I realized there is a lot more work to do on these trunks than you think LOL! I have a 1994 f-350 with the Cummings motor and man they're so easy to work on I miss that part LOL! Love your channel Thanks!
Best video on RUclips entirely for doing injectors !!! By the way do they have that OBD scan tool for iphone users?
Man, I appreciate that!
I love doing injectors I’ve done them before they are so fun
Much fun!
@@ProjectTimeGarage yes very much fun
I don't know if it's just me but the first thing I always do on any vehicle is checked oil level before I get started.😁
lol, that and tire pressure.
Outstanding video!
Thank you very much!
I am new to diesel engines. This was a great video. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
I'm getting one of those obd scan tools. My truck is having some similar issues. Thanks bro.
No problem 👍
I like your pointer. It helps.
Thanks!!
Grt video you saved me so much time a money on my dads truck f350 7.3 99 model
Glad to hear!
After watching your video and your reference of where to buy the fuel injectors I gave them a call and purchased for my 7.3 1997 F-350 with over 408,000 miles on it.
I had been going through little things that need to be repaired that were affecting its performance got them all done and it help but still was having some issues. We have come to the conclusion it’s the fuel injectors and your video helped so much. ❤️
Thank you on all the detail truly helped!
I’m going to do High pressure oil pump next. Who do you recommend to buy from on the Internet?
My pump came from Full Force Diesel as well. I buy most of my stuff there since they're local to me. It's easy to just drop in and pick up same day.
Great informative walk through... my ocd is super triggered with the debris lingering above the open top end though lmao
Yeah, I get that a lot.
This video is great. Very informative and very well done....the music is blasting over the content.
Yeah, I noticed it too. Didn't sound that way in pre-production.
Amazing video very thorough and informative. Would you happen to have a video of removing a stuck/broken glow plug in a 7.3?
Thank you but I don't have any info on extracting a broken glow plug. Most of the time it involves pulling the head. Hoping for the best for you!
Great video. I have to do this today, and this video made my life much easier. Thank you for posting.

Awesome! Thank you!
Great video! Lots of good information, to-the-point, one of better diagnostic and how-to’s I’ve aeen
Great to hear!
After replacing my turbo I am so not looking forward to this but at least I know my old turbo wasn’t bad 🙃
It's actually not too bad to do.
holy hell man. this is the by far the best video Ive seen on injectors yet. and I've watched many. Thanks for being an outstanding instructor. question, why wouldnt you change the injector cups? in your experience, is it not necessary? thanks again
The only failure I've seen on cups is they could crack. In my experience, it turns a few hour job into a two day ordeal shince you have to wait on the sleeve retaining compund to cure.
Very help video. Greatly appreciate it
Thanks!
Just commenting because this is a good video. Hopefully someday putting big honking injectors in mine, along with a fancy turbo.
Thanks Chris!!
Great video, love the very detailed instructions. What engine monitoring are you using ? I love it ! I am Running a 2003 E450 Decommissioned ambulance with 127,000. #1 injector just went out. This video is perfect.
Thanks. I have a full video on the monitoring solution I'm using: ruclips.net/video/fm05PqT18IE/видео.html&lc=UgyMXr_I78iJGFg2htd4AaABAg
I would of used air to clean off the engine first. Great video and I like the pointer!!!
Good tip!
I always spray it down with good degreaser and pressure wash everything before I work on it because I can't stand grease and I don't want any dirt or grime falling into the heads.
Video is just what I needed , Thankyou for this
Awesome, glad to help!
Watching the lubrication of the injector before assembly cleared up why Ford fanboys like the 7.3 so much.
LOL
Omg the Haynes repair manual says NOTHING about not removing the breather box... I came here cause I'm having a bitch of a time removing the furthest back bolt and now I learn that I have to get new Orings with my truck torn apart in my driveway. Thanks alot Haynes... Holy f**k I am heated right now.
Breather box just makes it easier to reach everything. As for the injector o-rings, you *may* get by with reusing them, but with time and heat cycles, the rubber/viton will harden and become much less easy to seal. The reason to replace them while you're in there is because it would be awful to get it all back together just to find out one of them isn't sealing.
Rich men North of Richmond! WoW
Thanks!
The only issue I see here,is tell folks to clean up the top of the head before removing the VC.And pulling the injectors.
During the removal of the drain plugs in the oil rails,it looks like you have a ton of needles, dirt and leaves that can fall into the opened up head.
Im not saying your video was wrong, just keep it clean.less headaches down the road.
Great point! I appreciate the input. There's no such thing as too much information.
I am currently using this video as my guide for my 99 F250 but I do have a question. At what point did you change the oil? After you evacuated the cylinder before trying to start or what? I have the injectors and glow plugs out now and the amount of carbon build up on them is insane. Can't wait for the new ones to get seated and see what kind of improvement that will make.
I made sure it ran, then immediately changed the oil.
What app was running on the tablet? I’d like to see what my HPOP is putting out. This video is SUPER helpful. I know my truck is lacking for power, I do a lot of heavy towing with my 7.3 and want to make sure it’s running tip top
The app is called Torque Pro. I have an entire video covering the basic setup of it on the diesel trucks.
Awesome video so much so I'm gonna get me that foreskin app and stuff even though I roll an idi...we use wrenches and sharp tools to diagnose we don't power stroke any foreskins most of us lost em in the 70s or at least in the 90s
Long live the IDI!
Pulling the drain plugs from the under the valve cover isn't necessary because if you crank it over it'll just push it all out the glow plug hole anyway. Just seems redundant unless I'm missing something.
It's really about the amount of oil that drops into the cylinder without removing the plugs.
Very nicely done video. Curious what the Samsung app was showing all the juicy info while test driving.
It's a free app from the Google Play store called ForSCAN. It's a Ford specific OBDII software. Very nice stuff.
I love your videos. Did I miss something, what was the Archoil used for? I have a 2001 f250 7.3. Do you recommend buying Injectors from the same company as your friend?
I use the Archoil additave for my oil and fuel in all my trucks. I do recommend the injectors from Full Force Diesel. I've used a whole bunch of them.
One of the best videos I’ve found so far. Looking into upgrading on my E99 but most recommend changing cups, is there any to tell ahead of time if cups need replacing? I’d rather not mess with them if possible.
Typically I don't replace them unless there's a clear failure.
Hi just wondering if a guy shouldn't change injector cups too since he is already in three? Thanks, great video.
I actually get that question a lot. My thinking is that they typically don't fail unless they're overheated, or something else gives up. I have a video series on changing them out, just never done it unless they start leaking.
Great Video Guys! Definitely will use this when I install new injectors in my 7.3 truck in the near future. One Question, what is the name of the app ya’ll used with all those gauges?
The app is called Forscan Lite. It's an Android only app
Great video! What is the gauge setup at the end of the video on the iPad? Would love it for my excursion.
Thanks, I have a video covering the gauges: ruclips.net/video/fm05PqT18IE/видео.html&lc=UgwaNTn3tN41ZXWEh1R4AaABAg
Good simple through explanation
Glad it was helpful!
My question is what's the order of cylenders the buzz test does? Like the first one was no good in your video which injector was that under the valve cover
It buzzes in numerical order 12345678 - Number 1 is on the front passenger side, 2 is the next one back on the passenger side and so on - number 5 is front driver side
Good stuff
Thanks for the visit
I like how you did this video...
Not offhand, but it's a pretty popular subject, so there should be plenty of RUclipsrs talking about it.
Oops, sorry. This comment was intended to be for your question about the 6.2 gas channel.
Thanks for the comment!
Making it look easy.
Thanks!
I replaced all fuel and jacked her‘s and your video helped tremendously thank you.
We also replaced the high-pressure fuel pump got all parts from the store that you recommended thank you! We are having a very hard time starting the truck we have oil pressure at start or tempting to start at 400 pounds so we’re thinking that the high-pressure oil pump needs to be replaced? We did hit it with a little quick start I know it’s not recommended but it did fire and start and it ran for a bit and oil pressure went up to 1200 and then fell back down. I’m gonna order the high-pressure oil pump and the IPR valve. I was just wondering if you can give me some input and some advice to get this thing up and running.
Thank you!
Basically, if the icp is telling the IPR to open up and let high pressure oil into the system, then it should start. Typically a good rule of thumb is about 500psi in order to start the truck. If you're unable to build good cranking pressure, then the HPOP can't deliver, or there is an internal leak somewhere in the system (like injector o-rings). Since injectors are new, and you didn't pinch an o-ring putting them in, it's very possible that the HPOP is the culprit.
lmao the first step had me weak
LOL, gotta start somewhere....
Looks like the bafx obd2 scanner is no longer available. Will any Bluetooth adapter work with the app you suggested? Thank you
Man, I wish I could find a replacement one.
I downloaded the app and bluetooth OBD because of your video. Thanks for that lead.
Is the there anyway the Forscan app can test what injector has bad O-rings?
Not really, it's basically limited to electrical tests.
Hey I’m just replacing number 8 injector on my truck how would I turn the engine over without it starting so that I can keep it from hydro locking?
Jump the solenoid on the passenger's side while leaving the key off.
Everytime I’ve done injectors on a 7.3 it ends up hydro locking. I’ve never removed the oil plugs. Could that be the reason? I’ve always noticed fuel draining when I pull the injectors. Thanks
I'm sure it is the reason. I've never had a hydro lock doing it this way.
Great video. Can you send link of reader on Amazon?
That reader was discontinued I think. I've looked for a repacement but havent' found one.
Got to doing mine and the high pressure oil plugs are stripped... hope i can go around that
May try using a bit larger torx and hammer it in there.
How long did it take cranking it over before your truck finnaly started? Im having that issue now big time
It takes a bit of time. Say a minute or so total crank time. Best if you can get a scantool that will read the high pressure oil system. It needs to be around 700psi before the injectors will work.
Good job. But what was the reason for replacement
Low on power, hard starting cold, a lot of them failed the cold buzz test.
Great video, but question - do you install the 2 oil drain plugs before evacuating the cylinders, or after?
I generally do it after.
Great content , I'm learning a lot. I bought a 6.0 two weeks ago , knowing NOTHING about PowerStrokes. Been driving Cummins for a long time but never worked on them either cause , I never had a break down with one of them. Three days after buying the 2004 6.0 , it wouldn't start. Seems the FICM was bad . Got one coming , hope that does the trick. So , my question is are the 7.3 's and 6.0 similar enough that after watching this , is the same procedure and parts basically the same for the 6.0 ? Thanks for the video !
The basics are the same, It's a HEUI injection system, so high pressure oil actuated injectors, IPR, ICP, FICM, etc. None of the parts will interchange, and they're in different locations, but they are very similar in the basics. I also have a 6.0
@@ProjectTimeGarage . . . Thanks much for the reply. It's gonna be a learning process for me but It's always good to learn new things. I bought this one because it has an 8ft bed and I want to put a truck camper in it. My main truck is a 2016 Ram 2500 , It just has a 76" bed . Between your awesome videos and a few other channels I'm sure I will get my 6.0 up and running !
Are these aftermarket injectors? Looking at buying an old 7.3 with 330k. Needs new fuel injectors, so this may save me a couple thousand in repair costs!
They are reman factory injectors. These came from Full Force Diesel. I've used a bunch of their injectors and had good results - plus they are close to me so I can just drive there and pick up stuff.
Will this forscan injector self test work on a 96 7.3 powerstroke?
Thank you sir your video help me a lot
Most welcome
I live south from you. I got a f350 7.3. Would you be interested in doing some work on it for me? I didn't know if you work for public or not. Thanks. Great video!
No sorry, I have a full time job and a RUclips channel that keeps me so busy that I can barely get time to breathe. The best shop out there (in my opinion) is Powerstroke Specialty in Buford Ga. Look up some of their vidoes on RUclips. The channel name is Powerstroke Help
Someone please tell me where to get the tablet with the gauges. When they are test driving the truck at the end...how do i get that set up instead of gauge pod?
Here's a link: ruclips.net/video/fm05PqT18IE/видео.html
I had the injector out and turned over the crank with the harmonic balanced bolt to spit oil out of the injector hole, I had the glow plug left in. Is this a sufficient enough evac or do I need to take out the glow plug. Just changing injector 8, scanner said 8 and the oring was cracked
I'd say you're fine.
i hooked up my truck to multiple different scanners and nothing pops up on any of them could i get help to know what the problem is
The app called Forscan is probably your best bet.
Can you diagnose a knocking injector through this app? Or how would you go about diagnosing an injecto knock?
Not easily. Best way I've found is an automotive stethoscope. Cheap, easy and it works to locate the knocking one.
Hi. While pulling one injector I got a lot of oil pouring out. I did pull the drain plugs first. Is the best way to evacuate all the oil from that cylinder by pulling glow plug and cranking? Or should I do something else also? I haven’t cranked it at all yet. Thanks for your help.
That's exactly how I evacuate the cylinders on all of them I've done. Replace all injectors, leave all the glow plugs out and turn the engine over.
Thanks, I only changed one injector. Want to make sure that’s the issue before replacing all. I wasn’t sure if I could only remove the one glow plug to evacuate cylinder. Seems like I could but I never done this before. Thanks for responding I appreciate your channel sir!
Scanner link says Android phone only. Is there a Apple version? Says both phones in the video work. Just checking before I order it. Thanks and great video
Have a look at my channel. I just put out a video last week covering everything OBD2, ForScan and Torque Pro, including how to side load the apps. Should be helpful.
Excellent thank you. And amazingly fast response time.
Do all stock 7.3 trucks have that device to attach the FORscan device? Or does the truck have to be tuned to use that FORscan device?
No, the stock trucks will do it straight from the factory. FYI, I have a video coming out on Friday March 3rd that goes over everything OBD2 and Powerstroke related for the average guy.
If I'm just doing two injectors on opposite sides can I just take those two glow plugs out to evaluate the system?
I've done it in the past. It worked for me just fine.
0:39 what’s wrong with it is easily found by starting with the blue oval in the front! 😂ok kidding aside nice vid I need this for my excursion, thanks mister!
I actually LOL'ed at that! Is that 7.3 Excursion 4x4?
@@ProjectTimeGarage yep! 01 4x4 with a 7.3 she’s a cool truck! Super heavy but it sure is a dog so I’m sure your playlist will be what I’m doing for the next month on it 😂
@@Lonewolf23-26 Cool, that's a very desired suv
@@ProjectTimeGarage yeah took me a year to find this one and I got a great deal, but I know why she’s got some gems hidden under the hood for me.
Great video, do you just snug the oil rail plugs back in or do you mess with a torque spec.
I use the ol' torque elbow on most things that aren't internal engine, or suspension.
I found there is a place here that fixes and recalibrates fuel injectors. Friend said it cost him around $100+ to have his done for his 4 cyl car. Thoughts on this type of service?
I'm skeptical that they'll rebuild the HEUI injectors for that price. The repair parts alone for those injectors is WAY more than $100.
Great video BTW. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
Do i need to wait for the drain plugs to get all the oil out before taking out the injectors?
They drain pretty fast. Give it a couple of minutes.
