My son had about 6 of these spells between the age of 6-18 months. But one VERY important point that you have failed to mention is that it ALWAYS begins with them CRYING. I just don't want anyone believing that these toddlers are simply holding their breath like the animated girl in that cartoon clip you played because THAT is not what happens. It always begins with them being so upset to the point where when they cry, they can't catch their breath. If you have ever seen or heard a child that had his finger caught in a door or drawer, it is so painful that when they let out that first cry there will be a very long pause where they make no sound at all because they "can't catch their breath", thus leading to this dilemma.

I thought the same. Whenever I try to explain to people what happens if my girl is really tired and cries BIG cries their immediate response is that she is being manipulative or naughty. And they kind of don't believe me when I say that her emotions take over and she can't get that breath she needs. She is NOT doing it by choice. She's now 3 and it happens far less. It is horrific every time it happens it takes me back to the first time it happened and I thought she was dying.

My baby does both kinds of BHS. It’s the most scariest thing to witness to your child. One time - he became cyanotic, had a seizure, lost his breath and stayed cyanotic to the point where I had to give him rescue breathing and then give him a sternum rub to gain his breathing back. That was the worst episode we had with him. We took him to the children’s neurology unit for an over night stay. We did a full panel of tests from blood work and EEG. All tests came back normal. No Iron deficiencies etc. I don’t know if they tested for lead levels. I’m here watching your video because he did it again. We called 911 because he was foaming during his seizure and my husband was alone with my 5 year old and I wasn’t around. It was so scary to get a call like that. Please, any advice would help greatly.

If there are any parents that have babies that have this next time, they have a cry, make sure to breathe in their face breathe in their face blow a puff of air in their face. It helps release them from the cry spell.

My daughter would absolutely not have a breath holding spell if she didn’t get what she wanted. She would only have them when she got hurt. So you implying this is the terrible 2’s, is completely false! A true breath holding spell does not happen when a child does not get what he or she wants. My daughter actually grew out of it by the age of 2. We still don’t know why she had them in the first place.

My son When he falls or hurts himself he has these episodes he turns purple and his teeth are closed and he twists his hands and it can last forever I don't know the exact time maybe 40 seconds but when this episode goes away he goes back to being a normal child, an ambulance was present after the episode and his vital signs were normal, do I need to go to the doctor? I don't want a CT scan for my son he is only 3 years old

Could it be related to Ondine's Curse? I thought it can only happen at night during sleep but just checked AI and it said, "While the condition is more severe during sleep, individuals with Ondine's Curse may experience symptoms even when awake, highlighting the complexity and challenges associated with this disorder." It's a congenital disorder.

Sorry, but you forgot 1 really important thing! BHS is NOT just holding their breath! They are crying too much/deep, that they are unwillingly holding their breath. Not by purpose! That is a big mistake in this video.
You are a doctor, why aren't you telling the whole story of Breath Holding Spells? Watch every video of children with Breath Holding Spells here on RUclips and you will see: It starts with crying!

I had same experience. But it was quite opposite. I started feeling dizzy and in a matter of few seconds, I lost consciousness. My husband was in front of me and he tried to hold me when I was feeling dizzy. I fell in his arm loosing consciousness. And after few seconds i regained consciousness and immediately started having shortness of breath and gradually my breathing stopped. I was screaming but no sound was coming from me. My breathing completely stopped and I thought I will die in a few seconds. It was most horrific moment of my life. My question is why did I experience this? Is this breath holding that you're talking about? Also I have severe anxiety issue and had anxiety attacks a few times.

Hello Dr. Omar, we will be headed to a follow up visit with my son’s (he is 21) new neurologist next week, he had one or two seizures two years apart. Went to ER in November when he has last seizure did full neurology work up found tiny 2 flair they said was nothing abnormal. He is currently taking Keppra. We finally have a follow up from November. Can you give me any advice on what questions should be asking? He has been fine since November, but this is all new to us. The Keppra was keeping him up at night, do you suggest any other type of medication that he could take once a day? This is one question I will be asking. Anyhow, just thinking of whatever advice you could offer me would be helpful. I thoroughly enjoy your videos. We can’t believe how long and how hard it is to get into see a neurologist.

My 3rd child did this often between 9months-2 years old, always occuring at the beginning of a cry from being hurt or surprised. The trick I did was blow gently in her face for a few seconds to get her to reset her breathing reflex. It worked 80%+ of the time. Rubbing them on their back, arm, leg also helps.

The kid in the first clip has been diagnosed with a form of epilepsy since then (I'm not sure the channel owner is aware of that) and was having a seizure in the clip. He wasn't having a tantrum to get anything, he's literally a baby having a seizure.
There's been cases of babies not even 24 hours of having BHS. They're not even a day old, they don't even have a concept of throwing a tantrum to get what they want. It can be caused by pain signals, and hunger is a pain signal, so a baby feeling hunger for the first time can be enough to trigger this. They're not badly behaved children 🙄
