I’ve had a super rough day, feeling really just sad and not great. I’m glad I can across this video. I cried as I settled into the poses but by the time I came out of them I would have forgotten about that if not for the tears still hanging out on my face. It was super cathartic though, and I feel a lot calmer than I have in the last several days. Thank you for this video, truly.

Thank you for making this yoga sequence. I, like many others, have been having a rough year and was starting to feel consumed by grief. Then today I was at my breaking point when I got the news that my father is in the final stages of congenital heart failure. This video helped me to immensely in calming me down even with the crying I did at some points. Thank you so very much.

This was astonishing. Never before have I experienced a physical stretch that released emotional pain. The very first stretch of the video, the release of the right hip/hamstring, caused me to start crying. I just let it happen. It didn’t feel overwhelming or spiraling or painful like it usually does when I am experiencing a lot of depression like I am right now. It felt cathartic.
As soon as I came out of the stretch, the crying ceased. When I moved on to the left leg, no crying. Nor did I cry for the rest of the practice. It’s fascinating to me because I also have bursitis in my right hip, and I have to wonder if that might be connected to emotions that that part of my body is holding.
I have been interested in energy magick for a while and I have a book that a friend gifted me that I have been struggling to read due to my undiagnosed and untreated ADHD, but after this experience, I feel pulled to return to that book and try to get through it. There is so much that our current scientific model can not explain, so scientists and other “logical-minded” people brush it off as woo-woo. I am here to decode those parts of life.
Thank you, as always, for bringing us such wonderful content for free. This is life-changing stuff.

Warning, yin yoga is more likely to amplify emotions, so if you came in crying, you may end up crying harder. A lot of the time, that's what we actually need. But if you're trying to move out of that space, either because it's not a safe environment to explore that, or for any other reason, a flow or power yoga might be a little better suited for you right now.

It's my understanding that BKS Iyengar recommended avoiding forward folds during depressed mental states because this induces an internalized mental state that can exacerbate rumination and negative thought loops that are commonly experienced when feeling depressed.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, as this video sequence is primarily forward folds. Have you considered more easy backbending such as supported fish pose as a heart opener?

I find Hero pose difficult on my knees, what would be a way to progress? at 17:45, the windshield wipe side to side does wonders on my left lower back. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks!

    • @sarahbethyoga

Try a block between your ankles as a modification and trust that the progression will take time so no rush.

The wide legged forward fold is really uncomfortable for me. It's an effort for me to even sit up straight for a few minutes, not to mind fold over (I only seem to be able to fold over about a centimetre). So unfortunately it doesn't relax me because it is effort on my body. Is this a tightness in my hips? I am able to do a forward fold much easier when my legs are together. Thank you SarahBeth!
