The texture of the body finish is due in part to both the metallic flake in the paint and the very thin top coat. Normally a couple of layers of clear lacquer top-coat would be built and wet-sanded/polished back, this is a thin skin finish which omits some of the final finishing process steps.
Nitro finishes are thin by nature, orange peeling is an error, not a feature. Also orange peeling like this implies a few, very thick, coats were sprayed.
5:06, It is a 5-Way Blade Switch (it is NOT a toggle switch). In 1965 the Fender Stratocaster would have used a 3-Way Selector Switch. Fender did not introduce the 5-Way Selector Switch until 1977.

Yeah but all the players back then would put the blade switch in-between 1-2 and 2-3 to get those tones. so why not use a 5 way instead? Some time tradition isn't as good as modern. Someone should tell Gibson this lol. I have a feeling in 10-15 years there wont be anyone left who really cares about the vintage guitars. They will be too expensive and play like shit compared to what we have today. To each their own. But i would put my mim players plus again this and other vintage spec guitars any day.
I like this one a lot; the blue and creamy colors pair well together, and most of the tones I thought were very awesome classic Strat sounds. And lastly, the unique finish makes it more special, so yeah, this is a big win in my book
They got a few '65 specs spot on- transitional decal, small headstock but thicker than earlier '60's headstocks, about the same thickness as CBS strats. Body contour looks right as well- I think they did a really good job on this one- bridge pickup sounds really good in my opinion.
Fender has several different lacquer finishes they use for specific models and production runs. High gloss, flash coat, thin skin, and even relic ready for custom shop guitars. The orange peel on this guitar is most likely intentionally applied, which by the way is quite challenging to apply as evenly as it is on this guitar. It looks beautiful and well done. I’m surprised nothing was mentioned about the beautiful dark rosewood board, cleanliness of the inner cavities, and the absolute overall quality of the craftsmanship. This guitar captures the true looks and sound of a vintage guitar. Outstanding…!
Austin, as a future Curator of a Guitar Museum I feel you need to expand your knowledge concerning guitar manufacturing. The thin-skin finish is just one example of not clearly understanding what you are seeing/feeling. I really think Yourself and all of us could greatly benefit from a full tour of both Gibson USA and the Fender facility in California. Just my $.02 Cents.
MIJ baby!! This is lovely - sounds boss too!. I'm more of a tele kind of guy but man...I wish I had one of these. As for the finish, I suspect that nitro is deliberately done. It looks fire! A thinner coat can showcase the grain, possibly allow more resonance and..well...it's a little cheaper to apply. MIJs are always impeccably crafted IMO. Thanks for sharing, bubba!
Bought one of these a few weeks ago. Build quality is solid, feels very high quality. I was skeptical about the pickups at first but they are actually really nice. Some low output strat pickups sound muddy with too much gain, this one really cut through and stay very defined. Even the bridge pickup is voiced great for rock and metal. The bridge pickup is a bit too twangy and low output at first so I put a fralin baseplate and now its perfect.
I have a 2008 American Vintage Hot Rod '57 in Candy Apple Red "thin skin" nitro and it's got orange peel too. Maybe not quite as rough as this MIJ, but noticeable.
I love everything about this guitar. The color, the finish, the sound, and the specs. I think the orange peel finish will age really nicely and have a wonderful relic that will make each one look even better with age.
I just bought a 2004 crafted in Japan 62 reissue on Sunday at the Philadelphia guitar show. It is BETTER than any USA model I have owned. I am not a fan of the truss rod at the bottom of the neck and I am hoping when I need to adjust it I can access it by taking off the pickguard. Otherwise aside from low output pickups (vintage style) I love everything about it
This band played with another Japanese band with 2 Fender users in the band Called LÄ PPISCH in 1994. They played their Greatest Hit “Paya Paya”. The bands were so happy there
Those are incredibly rare and expensive sadly. The only one I can find is going for roughly $7k, and seeing how Takanaka isn't exactly a brand name in the US, I doubt he'd make the investment
Was just looking on Fenders site. Apparently they have some new pickups that are going in certain models . Pricing over 1k to 1k plus depending on the models. If you ever get a chance to or haven't as of yet you've got to check out Baby Saster. She was masked before it was required but it was for privacy. But she can rock a guitar like nobody's business.
Hey trogly I wanna tell you thank you for your show. I always watch it as soon as I get of work and that you make such consistent new content is amazing. I've been watching your channel for all my musical life and hope you read this. Again I appreciate everything you do for your viewers and guitars themselves.
It's close. The first difference I noticed was the truss rod position in the neck. The AV, AVII and Custom Shop reissue guitars have truss rods closer to the fingerboard. That finish will likely crack and chip easily, making a natural relic happen faster.
My Classiv Vibe 50s has all the aged hardware. Beautiful vintage style strat. It was rather affordable too being a Squire. Although mine does have a humbucker size cutout for SSH, except I would have to drill new holes if I want to get a prewired SSH pickguard, so it's not a drop in upgrade like 60s and 70s (if they had the cutout). So strange seeing mine would be easier to upgrade, even with having to drill new holes, it's easier than routing a new cavity.
That's a very nice and awesome Strat! I wish I'll buy that guitar that is seen in the video. It'll go nice in my guitar collection! Love your videos! Thanks! 👍👍👍❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Beautiful looking Strat! Love the color and rosewood fretboard. Really diggin how this one sounds too, quite surprised at that neck pickup too. Even though it's basically like a standard Stratocaster as far as the total options and pick up selections go they are still pretty versatile guitars for what they are, very nice! 👍
I like everything thing about that sweet Strat. I have a CS WW 10 ready relic Strat and it’s the same type of super thin nitro finish, IMO it sounds a little better and it ages quickly. I heard you channeling some SRV Trogly, well played. The pups sounded vintage but maybe a little overwound like Texas Specials? Great video, thanks!
Hi Trogly, I bought one of these a couple weeks ago from a dealer in Japan. I've worked with this shop for a couple years now and have purchased close to 20 guitars from them. I've never been hit with a customs tariff until this past purchase. I've researched the US Tariff Schedule and it seems that electric guitars from Japan should be tariff free? Do you have any experience with this?
Looking at the truss rod and you most definitely would want to take the neck off for that adjustment. My MIJ Geddy Lee jazz has the same adjustment and it’s damn near impossible to do when the neck is on without chewing up the body or the screw adjuster
I kind of like the textured "orange peel" finishes tbh. It feels a bit more rustic and honestly I just like having some texture to things haha. Lovely guitar though, that metallic blue is *chefs kiss* and it sounds pretty damn nice as well. I'm generally more of a Tele or Offset Fender person, I've never really found a strat that vibed with me, but still, this is a nice looking and sounding instrument.
I love the fact it is a signature guitar without the artist proof name on it. If I spend $2100 to $6000 on a guitar. It’s still my guitar. It would not be my guitar with someone else’s name on it. I’ve never been a fan of signature guitars 🎸
This reminds me of an 80's Elite Strat that I once had with a 3 push button pickup selector, knobs that pushed in I think and some new type of noiseless wafer pickups with no pickup poles in a beautiful blue burst. I didn't like them radius. I preferred a flat fingerboard.

You always say these guitar should provide vintage specs without being a custom shop. In my eyes they are just reissues. The Fender custom shop is not known for making guitars with a 7.25" radius fretboard and vintage frets.
The color is stunning. I particularly like the darker tone of the neck and headstock. Seems to me what with the bone nut and the proper single coils...this shouldnt be viewed as anything but a top teir Fender if the name and provenance is what gets you off. Fender North America needs to make some of these in various colors. Idc if its usa made or mexico made. Give us choices between poly or nitro for less than $2k.
I don't know what it is but the neck and the headstock look amazing the finish they did on that looks way better than the American. I know this is quite controversial but this is the truth as a Les Paul player every Japanese Les Paul I have played whether it's a Burny, tokai,or epiphone from Japan.. they're all better than almost every American Les Paul I played and believe me I wish it wasn't true because I love Gibson but it's true I played enough of both in every Japanese guitar I played that's high end is Miles ahead of Gibson's just the attention to detail is amazing
Dude, I need this axe! Is it true bypass? Are the knobs frequency compatible? Is it gig bag worthy? Can it get me the EVH "negro sound?" Asking for a friend

Welcome back everyone! A great MIJ strat, trogs
Sounded GREAT!
Wow!!! I wish the fretboard was a little darker!!!! Gorgeous looking guitar!
Dude, I need this axe! Is it true bypass? Are the knobs frequency compatible? Is it gig bag worthy? Can it get me the EVH "negro sound?" Asking for a friend
I don't know who the guy is but his signature guitar is awesome. Anyone catch if it's available in the UK?
For what ever reason, I always find that Fender uses prettier and darker Rosewood on almost all their guitars, whereas Gibson can vary A LOT..
