- Decided it was time to do the front U-Joints in the ol cattle chaser. It's a little more involved than just popping a driveshaft out, or in this case an axle, there's some special silliness that you have to do. Follow along for all the fun!

Guys, I get it. The radio is distracting. If I had a nickel for every time someone commented on it, id have, like 45 cents. Lets be honest, my videos aren't "viral". I do my best to provide y'all with quality content-- this one was an oops. You can still hear me though!
Great job partner thanks
Hey, watched your video on mute so I didn’t hear the radio until you mentioned it. LOL
great video man thanks for the help i need to get mine replaced on my truck i think im going to do it my self
@@travismotorsports9478 It's not a tough job for sure- hardest part is getting it on jackstands to be honest!
I didn’t mind the music but I’m more of a polka guy myself. You can play any my bands music were called bork and Bjorne and the flat chicken boys. Check us out we’re playing the route 10 industrial lodge in Bayonne New Jersey this Saturday. All you can eat Free shrimp on me just let them know Bork sent you.there will also be Semi fresh raw oysters as well
Great video, convinced me to take my truck to the shop. Labor intensive and I do not have all those tools, big vises, pry bars, snap ring pliers, etc. But I loved the video and it helps me to talk to the repair people.
Great video. I've been a mechanic for over 30yrs in the military, dealerships and mostly on my own vehicles. I've found that I can buy the tools, quality parts and do the work myself far less expensive than paying someone else to do it. Plus No One does the work as good as I do on my own vehicles because they either don't care, don't know any better or just hope the customer won't know/see where they cut corners, such as the simple things like cleaning up the dirty/rusted areas. I've rebuilt several front end suspensions, engine work, etc. using OTC or as good of tools and saved thousands of dollars. I appreciate you being another "good Ole boy" that is also intelligent and articulate so that the video is a good one. USAF retired also. Thanks again!!
Today, I used this excellent tutorial to swap out my u joints, hubs, seals and locking hubs on both sides, 2005 F-250 Superduty 6.0. The best advice was to get that 36" tuning tool from Harbor Freight Tools. Everything went perfectly. Thanks for taking the time to post these videos.
Great video, i came to see how to use the tool lol, but I really laughed when you said you couldn’t remember what they call the clip, then said you remove it with your snap ring pliers.
we (I) made a circlip fit from fastenal store, by grinding carefully to help it fit (the diameter was correct, the clip itself had excess metal that had to be removed)
Appreciate the video. Gives me the insight i needed before cracking into it. Didnt even know about the tool needed. Very helpful and to all those who complained... Well if you cant tune out the radio then you cant tune out a woman either...
I know that's right. Well said! It cracks me up when folks complain about a free video with free advice, regardless of the "production quality". Thanks for the comment!
All these pansies complaining about the radio. I enjoy the radio in the background. Also, you had me cracking up at the tuning tool several times. Thanks so much for this video. You've helped me more than you know!
Thanks for the video, it really helped me to understand, what I have to do. I have a 2000 F250 super duty. I guess there will be some differences, but I will work that out and great point about replacing the seals. Thx again. Great job.
I have a 2008. I did the driver side only as the other side was still very good. I did not have to touch the sway bar. And the abs sensor you can unplug from the other end if you are scared of braking it. Thanks for the video helped me a bunch!!!
Yeah, the drivers side doesn't have the steering link, that's why you didn't have to mess with it. Glad the video helped!
😂🤣😂 “of course mines covered up with some bullshit.”
Thank you for the video, I have a 2018 and used your video to replace my U joints
This guy and his radio…. Am I right? I mean are we all gonna sit here and not talk about the audacity of this freakin man?? I mean hell I got my bearings done and all but it was hardly worth the mental gymnastics the radio put me thru……(insert sarcasm now) 😂😂 great video!
And the comment of the month goes to....
Great video. Helped me see if the play in my axle with the hub assembly off was normal. Right @22:26
When I popped my axel off I wedged a socket behind the pry bar to get extra leverage it helped make it even easier.
when you said your that guy.......i couldn't stop laughing. Its like HOLD My BEER!
Nice video and explanation! I have this on the to do list for the end of the month. Thank you!
Great video. You showed me just what I needed to work on my 2013. Thanks for the tip on the tool, I would have just tried to make due with something else and likely wrecked something. P.S, I found your music selection very soothing. Good luck!
You can actually take the whole brake assembly off as on piece and save the step of removing the caliber and brake pads.
Nice job. I always put my lug nuts on the running boards too lol.
Tip... knock that vacuum seal out from behind before you remove the axle. I use an air chisel with a pointed tip to gently persuade it. Makes the axle come out so much easier. Like the videos and yes...lose the fn radio.
Appreciate the video, very helpful.
Glad to hear it!
i appreciate this very much! your presentation was easy to follow and im sure i will review this again. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
I wish I watched this beforehand... I put the inner seal on the shaft and now it's a pita to get the last little bit in
About to change my seals, I heard a old hub works for installing the seals. If you have one lying around might save some money. Thanks for the video! Music didn’t make it hard to hear you a bit 🙂
I have heard you can do that too with an old hub, I just like the idea of knowing I have it right where it's supposed to be. Appreciate it!
Thanks so much for your help!!
Happy to help!
You can save the step of removing the tierods, just cut the wheels all the way one direction, remove both wheelbearing bolts, then cut the wheels all they way back the other way and remove the last 2. I used a Cobalt 24 volt compact 1/2 impact gun. Its a little tight on one bolt but you can get it.
To have a pribar use the lug nut wrench thats under the hood works well no harbor freight needed.
Great video, thanks 👍👍
Good pointers on this!! Mine are about due, i can give mine a slight wobble
Thanks man it's my first time
Im lucky enough to have a 08 250 and a 2010 and wouldn't ya know have to replace both u-joints both trucks good video man.
Hex head hoopty magoos lol. Thanks man, awesome video.
Thanks for the advice man this really helped
Thank you buddy
lisle 38700 snap ring pliers are very helpful for this job
I'm watching your video because of USAF99... lol I'm retired USAF graduated basic 98.
Nice, I was in basic in...well, 99. Just retired Dec 1 2019.

You just saved yourself alot of money
sweet music, Mike!
Very informative!
Snap ring removal.. --->youtube magic
I didn't think the music was that distracting I could still hear what you were saying
Thank you or posting. Pry bar saved me, Workshop manual calls for punching the seal out from the back of knuckle... right.....
Great video, im subscribed!
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you.
You're welcome!
doing this to my 05 thanks for the video ive done said every cuss word available
Any time brother, hope it helped!
Giant tool and expensive seal? You’ve convinced me to leave it alone when changing out a hub assembly.
Snap ring
Thanks for the info. Hopefully next time you can turn the radio down so we can hear what you are saying.
Sun of a gun dont have that bushing set tool gonna have to make do with somthing.Think the only thing u didn't mention is the snap ring pliers need to be a long reach pair. We bought 5 pair and still had to borrow a set from a local garage.
Good Catch! I didn't even think about mentioning that!
You're my hero...
Thanks for the video.....with this work on a 2012 F 250? I heard some clunking when turning one way on my truck....I'm thinking that I will be doing this sometime soon. Thanks...
Honestly, I am not sure. I don't want to tell you yes and have you do it the same way and possibly tear something up. As far as I know, these instructions are only good 2008-2010. I would definitely do some more research before trying it!
How do you like those new shocks on her?
Is the ride any better lol
I thought about getting those
What is the part number for the inner seal?
I for got to ask mine is a 16 f250 with that tool you used part number OTC will that work for my year.? Thanks again awesome video
Thanks for taking the time and sharing your information and knowledge on this job. Especially appreciate the info on the OTC tool. Just curious, what part manufacturer did you use for the u-joints and seals.
The U-Joints are direct from my local Ford house, #3249. The outer dust seal is SKF 16510. The inner 4WD Vacuum seal is Timken 710492. Be careful on the vacuum seal, some trucks had a different sized shaft. You'll have to measure your driveshaft diameter inside the knuckle to ensure you get the right seal.
How long did it take you per side on this?
Good Stuff, Great Tips👍🏿😀 but your choice music needs help😜
Yeah, that's the last time I just let a country station play in the background on an Alexa... 🙄
Bruh!! You know I watched your video. And I had my outer axle seals in the right way. But I took it all apart because I was second guessing. The way you told us is not right. It should be flipped. Cost me $60 because I ruined a new seal that was in proper the first time
I am more than happy to admit if I am wrong, nobody is perfect. I am however, in this instance, pretty sure I am correct. What year truck and axle were you working on? 2004 and down is a different seal and is easy to confuse. 2005 through at least 2008 is this seal and installed the way I said. The two seals DO look similar, however they are different both in the way they look and get installed. Also, if you look @13:29 I haven't removed the seal yet, and the old one is present the way I describe to install it. That's from Ford.
Mine is stuck on the cv axle part 6697? I can’t get it off
Thanks for the loud music in the background. It drowned you out, bro.
Can I drive on mine for another week? Just realized they are both shot, just bought the truck
usually good for a while, truck may "hop " at 25-40 mph, but won't detonate for years
im doing this on a 97 ford explorer i'm guessing it's more or less the same
Great Video. Do you have the seal numbers and u joint number by any chance? Please and Thank you
Did i miss the u joint part ?
The point of the video is to show how to get down to them, pressing u-joints in and out of a driveshaft or axle is pretty straight forward. For most viewers, it would be a very tedious watch if I were to show that. On the flipside of that, you aren't the first comment to mention this, maybe I will do one detailing what I do to change them.
Taking that hub off where there’s 4 bolts on the back side is going to be impossible 😂 the bolts and threads are so rusty and a bad spot to cut then
little bit of PB blaster on them and let it sit overnight, I have never had a problem even on the rustiest of truck. If you're in the salt belt, you might have a different experience, but hit them with a needler before trying to remove it.
@@USAF99 my bolts were rounded off lol I had to pound a socket on and barely got it ofd
@@nick7.3 Well....lol, that'll keep it from being "easy" that's for sure. Glad you were able to get em off!
I heard music but it wasn’t distracting like all the crybabies are saying. lol
😆😆😆
Would a bad axle seal cause hub bearing wear by any chance? And when you change your wheel bearing assbly, am I able to pull out the axle ever so slightly play?
Hi Ariel, the bad seal doesn't cause bearing wear. It is the other way around. More specifically, a bad bearing could cause the seal to deteriorate over time, but the biggest contributor to seal damage is a bad u-joint on this axle shaft. The bad u-joint will cause excessive play in the shaft which will destroy the seal in short order.
@@patriotmotors6011 gotcha just wanted to make sure. Your statement makes sense so yeah, could you feel this play in the axle when it's on the ground, wheels on as it would be as you're about to drive it?
@@kuningmuda Yes, play in the ujoint is clearly identifiable, depending on how much it is. I'm doing ujoints on a 2012 F250 right now. I'll post a video on my FB page later. These joints were totally shot. A blind man could have spotted these.
@@trm64 okay let me know if you get to posting it, I'd like to see the play when vehicle is on the ground. I think I should be good then on my end but I'd like to see
@@kuningmuda Hi Ariel, I'm getting ready to upload some short clips to show you the before and after. I didn't take any pics or video of the u-joint before I removed the driveshaft, but after seeing how bad the damage was, I think you can see how easy it would be to spot that problem.
Giving you a like because I like it, but you gotta bring your camera in closer main. It's hard to see from this distance
As soon as I type this, you move it in closer 😂 my bad 😂👌🏽
I have an 06 f-250 can you send me the info on the seals you used ? I was replacing my hub assembly and those seals are completely wore out and I wanna make sure I get the right 1s.
Should be a TIMKEN 710685, but make 100 % sure with either your dealership parts department or wherever you are getting your parts.
Mine are shot, is in dangerous to drive on them until I can get them fixed?
They should be fine, just don't use the four wheel drive and put torque on them until you can swap them out.
Obviously, it goes without saying that, unless I saw them I could not give you a definitive answer and driving the truck with a known worn part is dangerous, and at your own risk.
Axle replacement f350
Just buy the tool and some good .09 snap ring pliers save money and time
Hey, so uh.....was the axle shaft hard to turn once you put the outer bearing back on? And did it free up at all after you drove the truck? I'm putting mine back together and it doesn't feel like it did before. I don't think I'm going to hurt anything by putting it back together and running it, but I'm just wondering.
Hard to turn, no. It should feel a little tighter but not hard to turn. Did you use the installation tool I used on the vacuum seal? Did the U-Joint move freely before you put the axle back in? If the U Joint is stiff give the caps a couple sharp smacks with a steel hammer to set them correctly. You might just have one off center slightly.
@@USAF99 Yep. I did on both counts. Thanks for your help, bud!
@@USAF99 2nd that, u joints prolly need some set up help
Is the outer vacuum seal on the manual lockouts as well?
You know, that's a good question. I would assume there is something there but maybe not as critical. Use Fordparts.com and your VIN number to see a breakdown of your front axle to see what is required for this job on your vehicle. Be sure to report back, I am interested in what you find!
Change the title to include the year of the vehicle I'm looking for videos on 80s model Fords and all I find a late model cuz nobody titles them with the Year of the vehicle
How do you know that you need to replace
Excessive play (there will be "SOME"), locking or popping while turning (spin the u-joint to different positions and ensure the wheel can steer freely).
Did you have wander in your steering wheel I'm trying to find a fix for mine
steering gear box
I thought you're gonna show how to1 replace to U joints
What year is this truck?
2008
Round House.....made in America.
Right down the road from me actually!
Don't use those harbor freight jack stands theres a open recall on them, and the new version that they replace them with!!!
No kidding? Damn. Ill have to see about that, I couldn't lift this big SOB off me if I had to! Thanks!
@@USAF99 be safe
It's a tuning tool lol
I ordered 6695 for my 2000 f-250 4x4 will this work ok
Instead of that tool couldn't u just use the old hub
Not and get it to the correct depth- its much easier to just use the tool. Those seals are far to expensive for "try it and see" in my opinion, but I suppose it could be done.
The title is video is changing F-250 front axle ujoints and seals, at 16:10 minute mark you say I'm not going to bore you with changing the U-joints and axle seals, not trolling Im just laughing I thought that was funny as hell
I get what you're saying. It is kinda funny. The intent was to show how to get TO them and change them, not to actually show how to remove/install U-Joints which is a fairly mundane and straightforward task.
Nothing like an overly masculine truck guy changing axle parts to 17 y/o girl music.
Was there a question in there Bob?
@@USAF99 Yes, do you like Miley Cyrus or the Dixie Chicks more?
@@bobadler3097 I don't know-- Both are horrible abominations of Country Music. It's Alexa dude, whatever plays plays.
Can't hear because of the music
You know every video I've clicked on so far says how to change U-joints and I can't find a goddamn one that shows me how to install the damn things everyone keep skipping over it what the hell is wrong with you guys everything else is Patrick Lee common sense
If everything else is common sense, the universal joints should be literal childs play. Hence why nobody shows it.
Yeah the problem is though if you remove the Caps not knowing that there are needle bearings in there you can screw things up a bit if you're too rough or haphazard thinking it's just solid metal or that there's some sort of ring bearing inside. Everything else you can do with a ball joint press or a socket and a hammer
you said the abs sensor is 400 dollars wow
It shouldn't be, if I did, that is incorrect.
Shut the radio off
You ever get the feeling that you have commented before reading the other ones and it might have been mentioned one or twelve thousand times? Yeah. Me neither.
Thank you
