    I 100% agree with this video. I was talking to one of my casual friends about what anime’s I watched and I brought up Evangelion and he was like I heard about it do you recommend? and it’s like such a difficult question to answer because i know he’ll probably end up enjoying it but then again it’s a show that’s very different and I didn’t know if he’d like all the psychological stuff. and it was just much easier to tell him nah rather than explain that. I also feel like because as people in general we find it hard to tell others about our mental health and the entire show revolves around that so I felt like me telling him I recommend it is almost like me telling yeah I’m not doing to well mentally which isn’t something you usually say to a not very close friend

      Thats a very interesting point, i haven't thought in that what we like in media could potentially reflect on how we are feeling mentally, which with that in mind can be really rough if a person is struggling. Thanks for the insight, i hope your'e doing great man!

    I watched Evangelion at a very particular time in my life, at the lowest of my depression. It left a huge impact on me and I still cherish the time I spent with it. Eva also was the first anime I REALLY got interested in, and was my gateway into Japanese media, more specifically, mecha anime and kaiju/hero tokusatsu (live action works with heavy usage of special effects). What I'm trying to get at here is, while Eva is GREAT, it's not as unique as people may like to think, as it is heavily derivative of works (like most things are) such as Ultraman, Kamen Rider, Gundam series, Space Runaway Ideon, Mazinger Z, and Devilman.
    And the whole idea that "Evangelion is not about the robots" is kinda disingenuous, considering said robots do play a huge role in the story; it feels more like when people say this, they are comparing it to their idea of what mecha is, rather than actually comparing it to similar shows.
    In conclusion, if we're talking about mecha anime that are too controversial to recommend, GaoGaiGar is really good but holy shit all those flashing lights oof ouch

    • @therealfizzberg
      @therealfizzberg  10 месяцев назад +1

      you might be right - i also tried to come over the point of what mech animes actually are, counter what people think they are, but maybe should have been more firm on that point. I have not seen the show GaoGaiGar but if you recommend it i'll definitely give it a go. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I hope you're doing better!

      Evangelion is closer to an earlier project that Hideaki Anno worked on along with the entire GAINAX crew: "0800: War In The Pocket"...made in 1988, it's ALSO a sobering deconstruction of the powerfantasy-dominated, Mecha/Military genres, as well...
      Mature works like this are simply not recommended.
      To paraphrase the creator's sentiments on the Anime Fandoms: 'I live in a nation of children. Adults read pornography on the subway in full view of actual children'(It's disgusting) Hideaki Anno
      Themes touched in his OTHER PRODUCTIONS:
      "Gunbuster"(1988; "Ender's Game" homange/PRO-Japanese Imperialism?!) & "Wings of Honneamise"(1987)(a rebuttal of Japanese Racism/Imperialism!)
      Also check out his Liveaction works like "Ritual" and "Love & Pop"(WOW!)
      OR, his latter cameo directing/acting in 2nd half of "Gurren Lagann" and "FLCL"(he is the "fat housecat" with big testicles)
      "Evangelion" is actually UNDERAPPRECIATED. It's not some fluke. It's a culmination of a valid Human Condition message, by a Kubrickian master of his craft.🤷🏿‍♂

      @@ynraider While it does seem some Gainax staff worked on Gundam 0080, Hideaki Anno himself did not. You may be confusing it for his contribution to the mechanical design in Char's Counterattack. As for everything else you bring up.... I don't care? Eva's super funny to me cuz people always praise it for the wrong things, the deconstructions of mech anime attributed to it are things the original Mobile Suit Gundam should be credited for over 20 years prior to Evangelion (inspiring Anno himself heavily, Anno in one interview citing CCA, the first Gundam movie that wasn't a compilation of episodes, as defining his generation), but that doesn't at all diminish the genius of Evangelion or its quality, and it's the series' unique amazing qualities that I wish more people praised.

      GAINAX worked on CCA AND 0080, alongside 0083, those are the top 3 UC Gundams...
      Anno is a mecha fan of the utmost caliber, seeing as how he DESIGNED some of the msot iconic Gundam units as well!
      His inspiration from Gundam, was the machines, NOT the Human Condition narratives, as he was PRESENT when those were crafted!
      And Tomino/Anno were BOTH inspired by Gao Nagai! Only Anno carried the torch.

      @@ynraider Ah, so you haven't seen any of it. Fun.
      MSG is about love, human connection, interaction and communication, the trauma meme is a part of a lot of Gundam stories, but that's not what the franchise is actually about. As Gundam X had explained, and as was always the case to everyone who was paying attention, Newtypes aren't a subspecies, they're random people who just have the power of extreme empathy, which is all that being a newtype is, y'know, the communication theme, newtypes being the next step in humanity's evolution is explicitly and specifically Zeon propaganda, Zeon being an allegory for Nazi Germany which, yes, used Fascist talking points, obviously. Being a newtype, crucially, isn't genetic, aside from the fact that every human might be a newtype. As for Zeon's "mythos", it's a parallel to pre-Nazi Germany's complaints of economic exploitation that's been happening for decades prior to Hitler's rise, who used said fact to gain power. Also, uh. Amuro being good at killing is at no point presented as particularly good, aside from the fact that it helps him not die it's taken an extreme toll on him.
      It's funny you ever bring up Stardust Memory, as it contains pretty much the only instance in the series of a character who spouts Zeon's Fascist propaganda without ever being challenged on it, Anavel Gato.
      I warmly recommend you watch some MSG, you'll be very happily surprised with its actual messaging on these issues.

      @Peasham 8 месяцев назад

      @@ynraider Gainax is exclusively credited as working on CCA and G Gundam. Anno never designed a single Gundam or Mobile Suit, his biggest contribution was designing background ships for CCA. The future president of Gainax wrote the screenplay for 0080, but wasn't a member of Gainax at the time. There is zero evidence of Gainax working on Stardust Memory in any capacity.
      Anno had cited Tomino as one of, if nothing his biggest inspiration multiple times, citing CCA as the movie that defined his generation. He had nothing to do with the writing process of any Gundam series, as stated, his contributions were entirely minimal, as were Gainax's in general.

      Hideaki Anno began pitching Evangelion in 1993, at bars frequented by Otaku/veterans in Anime production.
      FUNFACT:
      1)Allegedly, "Serial Experiments Lain" was birthed when other creatives overheard Anno's psychological/psychotic rants for funding.
      2)Once Evangelion became a massive success, SEL/Cowboy Bebop/GiTS/darker/mature shows were greenlit!(not allegedly, the creators confirmed this; EvaGeeks Forums had interviews)

    Introducing NGE to people is like introducing people to Drakengard/Nier (video games by Yoko Taro, shares writing and themes with H. Anno). Not only do these pieces of media go heavily into dark stuff and symbolism, as you said, but also they require patience and multiple viewings. Both are open to interpretation, and I suspect people today don't have the patience for OG NGE and Drakengard 1. I could be wrong, though.

    I personally think it is hugely overated. It is falsely deep (we got the metaphor and the implied meanings, you don't need to drag it over 2 episodes) and is basically just the author dumping his depression on others. It was interresting before the "plot twist" at the end but the author couldn't finish properly and absolutely destroyed everything before. It's what can happen to those stories that build it all to rely on the ending kind of like Darling in the Franxx who just went screw the plot it's aliens.
    I'm not trashing for free evengelion by the way. I actually love those deeper animes, my personal favorite animes are Madoka Magica which is a masterpiece unbelievably well crafted and deep and Kill la Kill which is deceptively deep with it's message about women that flew over most people's head that took it at face value.
    It's the kind of things I'd say watch it for yourself and make your own opinion and I would then add that I personally think it's trash. Totally would warn about the sexual assault though, both the hospital scene and the pedophile tendencies of Misato.

    • @therealfizzberg

    NGE is a great anime and a huge cultural landmark, but yeah, it's not something I'd like to rewatch let alone recommend to normies. The first stumbling block is how pathetic Shinji is; it takes 8 episodes for Asuka to show up- the show is a slog until that point cos Shinji and Rei are so spineless and lifeless; then things get abstract/hard to follow (especially the last two episodes).
    The lore of NGE is crazy good; the globalist conspiracy mystery stuff is great; the classical and jazz music is quirky; the Angel designs are very creative; the themes of loneliness/isolation/escapism, etc. are timeless and well executed; Rei and Asuka are basically prototypes for the kuudere and tsundere tropes. For those reasons and more NGE is a hugely important series.

    Maybe you have to be in the right place mentally to enjoy it, im not sure. I do know that it is legitimately great.
    The best stuff is all the things that happen between the mech fights.

    Most mecha anime aren't about the mechs, and NGE is one of the most mainstream recommended shows ever.

    • @therealfizzberg
      @therealfizzberg  10 месяцев назад +5

      yea thats exactly what i'm trying to shed light on - but i have to disagree thats its "one of the most" mainstream recommended shows. it's definitely one of the most accesible (streaming wise and easy to get into) mech animes out there, but if we are talking mainstream anime then death note, naruto, one piece, dragon ball and the likes are miles ahead. Its much easier to recommend death note than it is to recommend NGE. What i think as i also mention in the video is that a lot of people know of NGE, but have a skewed idea of what it actually is. Like i also know of - lets say "fifty shades of gray" but i haven't watched it, therefore my idea of what it is, is most likely very different from the people that have actually watched it. But thats just my opinion. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

    it's a work of genius. who cares if you "like it"? the final episodes were impacted by the cult terror attack and other elements.

      Yea i agree! it's literally my favourite as i also mention in the first minute! i actually havn't heard about the cult terror attack, what is that about? sounds really intersting
