Hey Jake, Top Shelf Aquatics here! The piece you're referring to is our mother colony of Jason Fox Daisy Dukes that we have been farming in store for years. We enjoy displaying our colonies at shows so that customers can see what frags would look like when they mature and grow. To be clear, we had zero intent to sell that piece but when asked what we would let it go for, of course we will give you(and anyone really) a number. I'm sure it would be easier and cheaper to sell wild colonies but we've chosen to fully embrace aquaculture and become truly sustainable instead. When you're in town we would be happy to give you a behind-the-scenes tour of our aquaculture facilities.
Man some hot corals , the hobby has changed a lot since the trade bans. Can’t wait to see more of the coral farm expedition and diving videos they are by far my favorite .
Yes indeed..i went to a west coast coral show here in cali lat saturday men the price of the bubble tip way top of the roof i was expecting to be a little cheaper but i guess not never going going back to that show
@jake how is the Kalkwasserreactor going and could you make a video about the diffrences between kalkwasser and calciumreactor. I am not sure what I should get. Greetings from Germany.
Really enjoyed the video, I prefer a longer and more in depth video, Being from the uk means I don't get to go to reefapluza, so I look forward to seeing these kinds of video, Keep up the good work
1 question,,, how the heck do you remember all these names of species?? Lol, top notch as always and thanks for all you do! I learn more each and every vid! 👊
Random one for you Sir....have you ever considered doing a mangrove terrarium/tank it would look nice and bring in the outside to the studio while still staying on track with things....ya just might start a new trend good Sir ;)......the clotting is looing slick btw ill be buying one :)
Before I set up my freshwater paludarium (which is the terrarium-aquarium hybrid you're probably thinking of!) I had wanted to set up a saltwater tank, which I had not done before, and grow a mini mangrove forest in it. But, I heard that mangroves grow exceptionally slowly. I still think your mangrove idea is awesome but I wonder if it's worth it. Who knows, maybe they don't grow as slowly as I thought!?
Those croc island scollys come from where I live in australia but we don’t get the nicer ones here I think the collectors send the majority of the nice ones over to America because they can fetch top filler for them
could you try out the new polyplab phone filter? Eat Sleep Reef did a review and it seemed good for phone videos. maybe you could do a video on it as well?
@@LobsterLube I have no hatred for coral, quite the opposite, I love corals, I love there natural forms and colours. I will admit I hate so called designer names people give to corals and then charge a stupid amount, because you can clearly see that this piece, is a super ultra neon australian gold diamond deep-water rare coral.
Just five months ago I was able to buy a single head torch for less than 100$. Now people are asking for obscene amounts for the same kind.. more than 3x the amount.
To all the posters here pricing other people's corals saying they should be this much or that much why don't you grow your own first and then price them at whatever price you want? If you haven't gotten the news most shops have not received any Indo corals in more than a year and most of these have been propagated and carefully cared for them for a long time. My hat goes off to these coral sellers as they put in long hours and invest tons of money trying to acquire, maintain and grow the very best for most hobbyists to enjoy. Good video, but please show more vendors and more corals and maybe just maybe less of you. Just a voice over would have worked.
I have never been to RAP. QUESTION. Are the prices jacked up due to people coming to spend money. You know like going on vacation. Things are priced high because they know you are on vacation.
It's just that the 'high profile' corals carry such eye catching price tags - I think next time I'll focus more on the 'normal' and affordable corals, and especially the sticks.
Glad someone said it, re: cost of things, dude gets shipment in, hits the lottery with one having an odd color morph, or maybe he's the first to get what's going to be a series of shipments, tries to cash in and gouge the shit out of anyone willing to pay the price.
Well from MY point of view, 'dude' is a noobie-expert who doesn't realize coral XYZ is actually common and slaps a name on it to sell to even less experienced buyers.
@@ReefBuildersVideo Oh I know, I don't even look at the coral vendors (unless I know the guy) at any of these shows anymore I'd rather just see what new tech toys are coming out. Plus I feel like a rave considering how blue the vendors keep their corals under. I get something costing a lot because it is in fact a rare piece, or shipping from Australia with wholesaler costs makes it expensive but when you see every other vendor with the same color morph/coral in their bin you really have to question how rare it is. I've been in the hobby around 2 decades now and I've seen everything getting fancy names slapped on it since back when Steve Tyree was LE'ing labels on corals :D Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to crap on the stateside aquaculture side of the hobby, I get that it takes big resources and times to grow these things out, but the other side of it is people trying to make as much money as possible off any unusual color morphs that they happened to get in a random shipment or something.
I agree I’m sick of the pothead names potheads give corals. I’ve been in the business for 30 years. I really hate when I describe a coral by its scientific name and the person says some stupid thing like “Dude you have no idea what you have or what you’re talking about. That’s a Cylume Stick Dildo Bounce Acropora”.
Doesn’t WWC charge $1200 a table for these shows?? That’s what I heard, vendors have to charge outrageous prices just to break even!! While WWC makes a few hundred grand as the host! That’s not right!!!!
Let the record show that WWC creates this show for ALL vendors and they definitely put their vendors above their own booth - they could easily have a ginormous booth up front and bring almost as many corals as everyone else. However they really use RAP as a time to let all coral vendors and farmers shine and they set up their own booth in a low key area almost in the back.
Reef Builders , probably true but u still didn’t address my complaint, or deny it, didn’t reef stock Denver charge around $800 a table?? I was told by a guy who used to live in Denver , moved, but thought it was way to expensive for a show!
Wow you didn't have to bash us like that but I understand you don't know the history behind the item and what it took to culture them fyi we named bta to separate lineage not for sale. Anybody in this that knows any better no bta with yellow tips will not cost a $100 and I had the cheapest high end bta at 10" to think I was excited to see you smh
Well comments you said made us feel as if we were the example one we don't name corals the hobby does two we don't set prices once again the hobby does. Once a coral has been ran through a auction a few times and sell at a similar price every time you start to learn what it's worth you can't fault us for what the people in this hobby are willing to pay for something that's limited and appreciated. But anyways not trying to be a prick love y'all doing the amazing work just we could have talk more being that I was a fan!
I can't help but dislike the collector crowd. Basically it's tending to be that anything interesting gets slapped with a bombastic name and price tag. I pretty much refuse to spend over $100 on any frag, so my tank is stocked with common stuff, no-name nice looking wild imports, and cuttings of 'fancy' stuff from rich guys that don't care to make their $ back.

Beautiful corals, great video Jake. At least a small chance for us who cannot attend it to somehow "be" there :)
I got 3 head purple monsters and 1 polyp of utter chaos for $30 total reefapoloza is AWESOME
What a killer spread of corals! I wish I could have made it there this year.
I don't have any questions, well not after your 4digit price tag. Another fantastic job at capturing footage for us 👍🐠
Some epic corals there.
Would love a video on native coral habitat, not so much sps but lps and zooanthids ( light levels and water flow )
I appreciate you giving your opinion on some of the prices of some of these corals. Great review!
Will White yeah same thought here. Definitely keeping it real. The people’s reef builder.
