Quiet. So quiet you could probably mow at night

Great power. I was not expecting it to be this powerful. As good as my 6.5PH gas mower cutting high lawn.

Wish the battery was a little easier to pull out.
Even though I didn't need a second battery I wish second battery could power mower without having to switch slots.
Final thoughts:
Overall I'm extremely happy happy with the Greenworks mower and I would highly recommend it to anyone. I think I will go battery powered from now on.

All of my outdoor hand tools are corded -- and even if I cut the cords occasionally, and I do, I still vastly prefer them. Used to own (for 12 yrs.!) a Black and Decker 18" mower, corded -- and LOVED it. It ate small tree roots, rocks, bricks, and heavy grass like a Cookie-Monster goes through chocolate chippers. It finally burned out (wires melted), and I tried to rebuild it twice -- I liked it that much. Ran over wires, yes (several times -- wire nuts and electrician's black tape got it going again); used a 50' extension cord and 120v 15 amp power, and LOVED it. I would buy more of those if I could find any new. The Greenworks 20'' mower my wife purchased when the B&D died cuts fine (stalls in heavy wet grass, but that's okay) -- BUT the batteries are good on average for maybe 20-30 minutes each (4 hr. type) and 15-20 (2 hr. type) in very DRY grass in my suburban yard; I have two 4 hr. ones and one 2 hr. (came with the mower), and often cannot even finish my FRONT yard, which is not that big. It takes two or even three days to do both front and back -- when with the Black and Decker, it used to take 3 1/2 hrs. overall in one day. I HATE these batteries and will not purchase more. When it goes, I will find a corded model again, if I have to make one myself.
been using a neuton for 15 years or so, heavy battery but the mower itself is super light. battery life is good for very small lawns only, I'm excited to try the new battery tech. this mower will probably be perfect for me.
also i haven't had gas in my house for 15 years, and that's great. no oil, no fumes, no exhaust, the noise is pretty much on a par with a fan as he says in the video. nice to see the big companies finally selling electric mowers.

I hate mine.. it did 1/4 of my lawn this 1st spring mowing and the battery died. Now, I cannot get the battery.
An added benefit the electric mowers that fold up and stand vertically for storage is that the blade is fully accessible for sharpening. It is not necessary to remove the blade from the mower. I use a Dremel with the sharpening accessory. It takes about five minutes.

Good review. I'm buying a used one tomorrow for $100 and this helps me with my decision. One other good thing I can see about doing away with gas mowers is you don't have to worry about pulling your arm out of socket trying to start one after every winter.
One other caveat about the cordless varieties though, is you really want to keep at least the battery (and charger imo) inside in airconditioned temperatures. Extreme heat and cold will play havoc on rechargable batteries so having a place for permanent storage in the house or garage is a must imo. Also many cordless tools will want to be kept inside as well as the oils in them can be finicky to extreme temp ranges.
If I might also suggest, I believe it's better to mow first, then weed eat. For one, the wed eater is there to just get whatever the mower can't reach, and for two, mowing first will keep your ankles out of the tall grass when it's time to weed eat.

This was a nice summary video of this mower. I’ve seen several but it’s the first one I’ve watched on the Greenworks specifically. I’ll be comparing everything I wife’s iPhone to this one. Nice drone shots and follow shots! I have about a 6000 square-foot yard so I probably will need an extra battery; what was the runtime you got on this battery? I’m in Wisconsin.
Great review! I went with the Kobalt 40v mower as they had it on sale for $239 this week, but, it's pretty much the exact same mower. The battery from lowes is slightly larger (5 ah) and is spring loaded, but, beyond that, pretty sure it's the same mower. Working great so far!
you bought the one i saw after buying the earthworks one. i'd prefer to have the extra battery power as i am running the batteries out as i finish mowing my lawn and once they are out, you have to let them cool before they will recharge (the charger wont turn on until they cool down).

Thinking about getting greenworks, would i have to get an extra battery? The back lawn and front can get thick. I have a ryobi and have it for years but as much as i like it but pain when i have to mow grass when its high up. Sometimes using 3-4 batteries to mow.

I bought my 1st lawnmower when cordless mowers had just come out and we didn’t really want gas stored in our garage… 1st time homeowner at the time. Same home, 12 years later, I’ve gone through at least 3 if not 4 Cordless lawnmowers, meanwhile people are walking around with the same gas lawnmower. The problem is you can only get 2-4 years out of the batter and then when that goes, you also need to replace the blades, starter etc. So how much does that all cost? More than a new mower.
The best one I had is my current one, it’s got a 40V 5A battery but that is $150 USD to replace. My grass is very dense and I have a very steep hill, so I’m going with a self-propelled gas mower this time, if you maintain them properly you can get 15 years out of them, not 2-4.Yeah you will need to buy the gas and possible repairs other maintenance, but it’s worth it. I used Self-propelled Toro gas mowers when I worked in landscaping, we would get used or refurbished ones and they would get through the toughest jobs, had to have a 20 Gallon can with us if we had a full day ahead of us but they could go all day.
Also, cordless are not used commercially, they would require multiple batteries and would likely overheat. Now you can get a Briggs or Honda engine, you would have thought we would have gone away from gas engines by now, nope, if you want something to last you’ve got a get the gas...

i got one at menards and it does come with 2 batteries now. however, my lawn isnt much larger than his and certainly not as long as he let it get and i luckily had a 3rd battery from the weed trimmer we bought and i had just enough juice to finish it. my whole lot is only .2 acres with a house, shed and porch. i really like the mower but wish i had done more research and looked at the 80volt kobalt mower that is $40 more than i paid for this one. good luck!
One thought for you up northers - when you put a gas mower away for the winter, you often have to take it to a lawn mower shop to get it running again in spring - if you're not a mechanic. And unless you get the really big boy, gas mowers tend to choke in tall grass.
I bought a certified 22" push mower and its amazing. has a powerful 175cc motor that cuts through grass like nothing. Its the most powerful gas mower ive used so far and its surprisingly light.

Never! Drain all of the gas including the carburetor and the mower will quickly start in the spring with fresh gas. Many gas mowers have a drain bolt near the bottom of the float bowl for this. If no such bolt, then loosen the hex head bolt that holds the float bowl to the carb. Gas gets old so use new gas.
This is a really compelling product to me. In terms of actually run time how long does it last? How long does it take to recharge the battery? My yard is very large, so I'm hesitant to buy a electric mower but this one seems promising.
If you have a large yard I bet two batteries should cover it. Id say it takes me 30-45 minutes to mow my lawn and as you saw it was only half way down. And the grass was really tall because I wanted to push the mower. I think the battery takes about 3 or 4 hours to recharge. If you're not in a hurry to buy it you might add it to your cart and watch it till the end of the Summer. Lawnmowers usually go on sale at the end of the summer on Amazon.
the recharge time on the batteries is quick enough that you can swap them out as you go. (I have a lowes 80v Kobalt). by the time you wear out battery 2, battery 1 is recharged. if you buy other tools, I have a trimmer and a saw, you end up with alot of batteries (I have 5) so power is never an issue
it really varied based on lawn length and sharpness of blade. if the lawn has not been cut in 2 weeks then you will get a lot less time. with these battery powered mowers that mulch, it is extremely important to cut every week and keep blade sharp. wet grass and leaves also make a difference. in my opinion after having a greenworks for 2 years they are only worth it for small lawn you cut every 7 days. why? because i also have the cheapest mower you can buy the weedeater from walmart. it has started 1st or second pull for over 10 years cost half as much as a battery powered mower i have only changed the oil once and added oil maybe 4 times. it does not mulch but can easily handle grass that has not been cut in more than 2 weeks with a dull blade. not as quiet not quite as light but a wider deck. only maintenance is to run it til its empty before you store it for the winter and add oil when low.
lol good idea, review etc....one note looking at your fence...maybe you should review Stains, peint and paintbrushes...just saying :)

The place whose lawn I mow just got a mower like that. I couldn't figure out to start it - the instruction manual is TERRIBLE. This video has helped me some. Now how do you turn it off?

Would be interesting to see a follow-up after two years. I just got what I think is the same mower, 40v / 6aH battery, and did about 80% of my 4500sq ft lawn on the charge straight from the box. It'll do the whole thing with no problem after a full charge.
I looked at many cordless mowers and the greenworks impressed me most with its solid build quality and hefty weight. Whereas other cordless mowers feel like something from Barbie's playhouse, the GW feels, and even looks like a "real" mower.
I also got a 7 year unlimited warranty, and a fantastic price, so it was a no brainer decision for me!
I'm really impressed by the mulch function, btw.

You can leave it in there. I usually don't. I have left it there for 2 weeks before though. It shuts off when its done charging. Also I left the battery charged and after all winter it still had 2 bars left so the battery doesn't drain that fast.
How does it mulch?
If the space where you store your mower gets below freezing during the winter you'll want to bring the mower inside your house. The electronics of the motor control board have poor resistance to freeze-thaw cycling .

I like gas cars because of the range, gas mowers because of the speed, gas snowblowers because electric ones can't work in deep snow (which comes often in Minnesota) but electric chainsaws because of their ease of use.
But I'm not sure about electric side by sides.
No headlights? I live in Texas and the when the summer heat hits triple digits, mowing my lawn at 5 am with headlights makes a BIG difference.
@Michael Bowman - I own one. Its a Ryobi 20 inch cordless brushless electric. Bright LED headlights for night mowing.
@Michael Bowman - I sure doubted the headlights. Never thought I would use them. But they took me by surprise. I can see great at night.
@Michael Bowman -- Its a manicured urban lot. No snakes. Sticks yes. Mower mulches 'em into dust. Haven't had to go to ER yet. I think you would be surprised. You can see the cut rows BETTER at night with the headlights beaming across the grass.
How does one clean the Greenworks chordless lawn mower. All Lawn mowers need cleaning and spayed off once in awhile.
I've sprayed it off several times. Its no problem. I just don't sprat much on the battery compartment. I've had no problems with the water.
I wish my neighbor had that. He mows late at night.

works in a slopy terrain?
It was a great mower until it quit working. Mine worked fine for a few months, now when I use it, it runs for a few seconds and then just stops. Turn it on again, runs a few seconds and stops. It is not a battery issue, does same on both fairly new fully charged batteries. Any ideas. I have not been able to get thru on the customer service line yet.
Did you mow on wet grass after raining? If yes, some mud may be stuck inside into the mower and prevent the engine from working.

Issues with this mower: Batteries do not last, 5AH will run for about 20-25 min and are expensive The underside gets clogged with grass more so than the other mowers I used. Try a different brand perhaps...

I bought one in the first year with 2 batteries it worked great second year now it seems like I need a third because the batteries don't last that long they did the first year i stored to batteries in doors I wonder if you're running into the same problem as I?
I have the 4Ah batteries and they seem about the same life as at first. I got the second battery for $80 on an amazon sale. I got it because I have the leaf blower, chainsaw and weed eater too. Maybe get the bigger size.

I went battery powered 5 years ago, never will go back to gas. Just sharpen the blades and replace the battery every 5 years, easy.

How much run time you get with one charge?

Id say it takes me 30-45 minutes to mow my lawn and as you saw it was only half way down so you probably get a hour to hour and half run time. And the grass was really tall because I wanted to push the mower. Yeah I throw in on the charger after each mowing. Same with the Ryobi weed eater then its ready go go anytime.
The hour plus long single charged run time is very good. Keeping the mower and the Ryobi on the changer day after days ready for the next use is a bit risky, isn't it? There are so many Lipo battery accidents during charging.
Yes I worry about leaving it on the charger too. I take it off the next day or that day if possible. I just put it right on the charger right after use so I don't forget. I did check the battery and charger after the charging light was off and nothing was warm so I think it shuts off the charging is done.
WIth lithium batteries its better to keep them topped off rather than drain them all the way. They will last a lot longer. You also want to store them at less than 85 degrees, so dont leave the battery in your mower in the garage.

Just beacause I was doing my Mother in laws house then she told a friend so now am mowering her yard. inshallah I can make a nice buessness out of this. I have a Lawn mower 80 V I bought at Costco... works ! Except the batteries the left battery works the right battery will not... states that it is charged, the round signal is dark. If I put the battery in the charger it will not charge or at least show completed... when I mow the yard the left battery works and when that is exhausted you would think the right battery would take over... NO! Greenworks Customer service is horrible does not work either number. So I will need to return item to Costco.
DO NOT RECHARGE before next time. Keep it charged at 2 bars as long as possible, in terms of weeks.
I bought a 20 inch 40V on amazon and it dies on thicker grass.
