Hey! Good review, but I have to comment on the two things you were troubled by! Number 1- when my battery ran out, I heard a beep and a click and in less than 2 seconds the other battery had kicked in and I was rolling! The second comment about pulling back the mower. I struggled a little, but by the second time mowing I figured out a technique. Just before you know you're going to pullback let go of the self-propelled handles and give it a little push-pull and it will easily allow it to be pulled backwards. There must be some sort of drive clutch that needs to disengage to free-up the backwards pull.
I experienced this on mine today as well, when using it the first time and found it quite useful when going uphill. If I were in a situation, going uphill, and needed to disengage the self-propelled motors, it would keep the mower from rolling backwards on me.
I have the 60volt and it does the same thing. I think it is a safety brake kinda, I think if you are pushing it up a hill I think it it would stop it from backing over you if you fell or something.
It acts like a hill holder. I haveca steep berm along the back.of my yard and it's make it much safer for kids or anyone that could have it roll back. It does have a good dead man as well. Just something to get used to if you feel you done need it. I just take the self propel off a little early.
I bought a Greenworks for $100 off at Tractor Supply. I'm in my 70s. I set it up quickly without help. Charged batteries. Started the mower and it took off!!! I mean really took off fast. I'm doing turtle mode most of the time. It cuts grass well, no issues. I'm getting use to how to turn it. I'm impressed, so now I'm going to buy the weedeater while the sale is still going on at Tractor Supply. Also, it folds up and can be hung on the wall in the garage or shop.
I only have 1500sqf of lawn, so I always only put in one battery. I too quickly figured out that I needed to release the propulsion lever before ending a run to pull back the mower to make a turn. It becomes second nature in no time. I'm enjoying this mower, never going back to gas, regarding garden equipment.
This is a fantastic review of this mower. I just picked it up last night and used it right out of the box. I found the rear wheel locking aspect a little tough at first, but quickly figured out to let the self-propelled lever go and disengage to make turning a breeze. I have the patience of a toddler so I didn't allow both batteries to fully charge. I used the 4 amp battery first to do some test cuts after letting it charge to full in less than 30 minutes. I'll test both batteries later today and see if I have the battery switch issue but as others have said, I don't anticipate it being an issue. Also, both of my batteries charged just fine. Hoping GreenWorks or Costco will get you a new battery at no cost if they haven't already. I mean, they have phenomenal warranties and I'll use and abuse them for the next 8 years and pound at that warranty anytime I need to. FWIW, I chose this one because of the steel deck over a Ryobi crosscut and this one was on sale at Costco for only $499.99 which is a HUGE savings over the Ryobi Crosscut mower. After initial cuts last night, I'm pretty darn happy with this mower and the warranty helps too. Still have a 17 year old John Deere rider (which for my yard size is truly overkill) but you can't deny the maintenance free aspect of a battery powered with this kind of cutting prowess. Time will tell if it's still this good but after about 24 hours, I dig it.
Just got this mower direct from Greenworks on an off season deal. This will be the first lawn I've had to take care of so I hope to learn more from your channel before spring!
I have had the non-self propelled 80v version for 2 years and it works flawlessly. Cleanup is easy. Storing is even easier. Batteries switch automatically but sometimes I use the bigger battery alone just to exercise all of them. One of the extra batteries I bought came with a free inverter. That inverter enabled us to have a small TV and a lamp in the living room during a 36 hour power outage after a storm. I love Greenworks products.
I have had 80V self propelled since 2019. That “glitch”, about going self-propelled up a hill with wheels locking, is on mine, too. I just stop self-propelling for a “second” before wanting it to stop. I can then maneuver it any way I want. If it “sticks” I just re-engage the self-propel for “a second” and unengage it, for maneuvers.
Thanks for the video. It’s on sale again next week for $529 at Costco. I feel like that’s a good enough price to give it a try.. will give my 15 year old Honda some rest, but I’ll hang on to that one just in case.
I have the 21in 2x24V mower that looks identical- I noticed if I had the self propelled lever pulled it won’t go back so I let it go and it won’t lock up. Luckily my batteries do switch over automatically. Great review!
Thanks! Also enjoy your videos! I’m new to the lawn stuff and wanting it to look good. I’m in eastern NC and my yard has tons of river rock- any advice would be great! Also have 3 dogs so the backyard is harder to grow but still trying!
@@TheLawnReview So a little tip with it locking when trying to pull it backwards: After releasing the self-propelled lever, you must push the mower a little forward first, before pulling it backwards.
@TheLawnReview Since the time of this video and my previous reply on your video, I purchased the 80v Greenworks mower with the 4aH battery. I really wanted the Self-Propelled with the 5aH but it was out of stock. About the only real 'negative' comment is that the mower is SO quiet that it can be difficult to know when the mower stops from the battery being dead or if clogged when mulching or bagging if the music in your ear buds are too loud. One of the big plusses however (other than my hearing being saved from not having to crank my music as loud), is the battery charges up fairly quickly, so when mowing my yard (close to an acre) I can swap to one of the 2aH batteries from my trimmer or snow blower and the mower runs just fine while the other is charging. This larger battery will likely be the go-to in the winter in my snow blower as well. I have a shelf in my downstairs study for all of the batteries and charging stations. Honestly, my lawn has never looked this good as my riding mower doesn't have bagging capability, so I ended up using the Greenworks on the entire lawn instead of just the trimming and tight areas.
I see someone else has already made the comment about how the wheels locking is a safety thing. Also if you buy it from Costco you get an extended warranty for the batteries for free. It adds an additional 4 years for a total of 8 on the batteries.
@@TheLawnReview have you seen an issue where it stops mowing and the batteries start flashing and you remove and reinsert them what it starts working again and has about 50% battery?
Wanted to thank you for your reviews. Just ordered this from Costco. I looked for an affiliate link but couldn't find one - sorry if I missed it. I subscribed and liked. I wanted to get the ego 12 amp from Lowe's but didn't think I'd like the whole Speed IQ control. Plus I couldn't imagine lugging around an 8lbs battery on a trimmer. No way can I justify the Milwaukee's price and I'm not invested in the tool ecosystem. Your review of the mower, trimmer, blower and hedge cutter convinced me this would be a good entry into electric. Coming from a smaller 160 cc Honda. Hoping for a pecan pie and not a drunk uncle! Be well and thanks again!
I have that exact mower. The self propelled is powered by the rear wheels. It takes a second or so to engage/disengage. If you try to turn by lifting the front wheels off the ground, while it's still engaged, those rear wheels are still in self propelled mode and will not move, leaving divots. I have the GW chainsaw & leaf blower. Those also take a second or so to turn on after pulling the trigger.
I think that is an issue that Greenworks needs to address. They need some kind of slip differential like a car so you can turn without disengaging the drive function. Right now it's operating like a drag race car designed to go in a strait line, posy-traction !
I bought this last summer. I also experienced the failing battery. Greenworks replaced it with no hassle. They didn't even require me to send the defective battery back and believe it or not, I sold the defective battery "as-is" on eBay for $30 plus shipping. But I digress. My complaint with the mower is that you can't mow very close to walls or edging. The geometry of the mower simply won't allow it. So I need to use my string trimmer to hit the areas the mower can't mow. I also avoid using the self-propel feature as it sucks up too much battery power. Fortunately my yard is fairly flat. Overall I'm happy with the mower. It's a bit noisier than my neighbors electric mower but that's not a big deal. I'ts still way more quiet than a gas mower. No fumes, no gas, no oil, no air cleaner. maintenance. Win.
You should have held on to that battery. The Interstate Battery store, rebuilds them with their own warranty for around $50 bucks ! Pretty cheap, when you consider the price of a new one. It's always good to have a spare lying around, as you probably have already found out !
@@fposmith I have several Greenworks 80V tools and plenty of batteries. Additionally because I purchased the mower at Costco the warranty on the batteries is extended and they replaced the battery. I'm good with selling a defective battery for $30 and getting a free replacement from Greenworks. But it's good to know that Interstate can do that. You didn't mention what capacity battery innards are for $50.
Great review as usual and the Green Works was on my list to replace my old gas mower. Have you had a chance to try the KRESS mowers yet? I seen videos from a couple of landscaping companies who use the prosumer version and they swear by them, but your reviews are more focused on exactly what you found, and sound advice. Thanks for all your efforts reviewing products and advice for lawn care.
Quite enjoy this motor! Agree about the production lot issue - no issue with batteries or switching over. It won't turn/reverse immediately out of self-propelled mode, so I just let that up about six inches early. Went about 10 months before I realized it had a Turbo button, though.
@@TheLawnReview ...I do now! It was actually your lawn mower comparison review - I was like, "oh damn, the new models this year have a turbo button". Little did I know…
Great channel, man! Please keep up the content! I bought this exact mower from Costco a few months ago when it was on sale for $499. I do like the mower but my biggest complaint is the same one you had. The rear wheels lock up when trying to back the mower up unless you roll it forward first. Major PITA! My gas powered Honda HRX never did that. It is so annoying, I may be purchasing the EGO 2156SP to replace it. Did you experience the same phenomenon when you tested the 2156SP? Seems like people are saying it's a deliberate safety feature in these mowers. The EGO would cost me $250 more. Would you consider the 2156SP an upgrade to the Costco Greenworks? If the EGO does the same thing, I may as well keep the Greenworks. What say you, The Lawn Review?
I think the Costco Greenworks is better for the money. The EGO doesn't do that with the rear wheels. Really tough trade off but if you can chunk out the cash you may want to get the EGO
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet but for the turbo mode, it’s made to automatically stop turbo after a couple seconds. It says it drains the battery quicker and suggests only using turbo mode when needed. Just thought I’d mention it incase someone wanted to know!
It has sensors that give a little more juice to the engine if it starts to bog down. The Turbo button is for when you see something coming that you know you should really need a "Combine" to cut ! My tall wet grass, it cuts like butter ! I haven't used the turbo button yet !
I think the products are great, I just bought this mower yesterday from Costco and ready to use it today .... but I had greenworks blower and 16" chain saw and love it ....
FWIW I use my mower will into the fall season, mostly to mulch leaves. When it gets below 60-55 degrees, my Toro wont start the usual way. I have found that if I put a hand held hair dryer pointing down at the base and wrap some water heater insulation around it, let it sit for 5-10 minutes WHILE I AM IN THE GARAGE WITH IT. After that it starts with a pull. Being able to pop a battery in and go would be really nice.
Awesome review! Looking at this mower, wondering the lifespan of the batteries... debating between this one and a toro gas recyler self propelled 22" mower.... Any thoughts? Thanks ☺️
@@TheLawnReview thanks for the reply, need to buy one sooner than later as my current lawn mower broke, any feeling you can give me on which to go for now?
The batteries have a four year warranty from Greenworks, and Costco kicks it up to eight years for the machine and the batteries. The extra four years warranty is applied when you register the unit online with a copy of the Costco receipt ! I did mine last night. It took less than five minutes. If you don't have a scanner, you can take a photo of your receipt with your cellphone and upload it to your computer. Greenworks has a link within the registration process to upload the receipt. The whole process was very easy !
@@fposmith It is still electric just not self propelled. I bought that a few years ago because it uses the same batteries as all my other Greenworks tools. So I have 4 batteries which with its rapid charger easily enables be to mow my lawn without ever having to wait for a battery to charge.
@@fposmith Because perhaps he lives on flat land. Or maybe they didn't offer a self propelled version when he bought it years ago. Or maybe the self propelled versions at the time were gen 1 and not very good. You see there are many reasons. Think it through next time.
Thank you for doing a review using the mower on a nicely maintained lawn. So many of these reviews are done in pastures with excessively high grass and weeds or fields with hardly any grass at all.
I like how you completely glossed over the lettering that says extended 8 year warranty when you register. I have been looking at EGO and Husqvarna, and both only offer 3 years max.
We just got the 80V Greenworks Pro mower, based on this and other reviews....And a different mower came in the mail. Doesn't have all the manual turbo mode type adjustments. No "dashboard". Perhaps it's a newer version that streamlined or automated some of the functionality? Not sure, but we love it. Our grass was super long as we hemmed and hawed about which battery mower to get. One charge ate through both the back and front yard, with a second run over the back. On one of the highest settings, to be reasonable, but still, impressive. I get a good feeling about this choice. It was about 650 Canadian, so not cheap, but I think we'll like our decision.
With talk of only going straight with drive mode engaged, can you drive mode mow a tight circle around, say a Toyota Prius for example, because all the drive mowers I have ever used where able to do curves. When faced with a squareish piece of lawn, I cut the outside edge two or three passes, then cut the corners with a curve and keep moving, not having to constantly do 90 degree turns alot. Go back later to get the missed cut corner grass. I once tried diagonal stripes. Having to completely turn around after each straight pass, screw that, no way. Mow lines disappear quickly, no problem. I drive a Prius. Good videos.
Just used mine for the 1st time this weekend, no battery problems, power source switches over automatically without issue, runs same with one battery with or two for extended runtime installed, reverse too soon after power drive forward is annoying but quickly learned to release power drive sooner before reversing understanding it probably does this to prevent roll back when power drive was used on an incline to assure the operator has control before allowing it to roll backwards. I only briefly used turbo mode, don’t know if there is a timed limit and did t see one in the owners manual. The folding handles are awesome, so easy to use!
I have the Greenworks 80v Snowblower (and some other tools) and normally charge the batteries inside the house, but accidentally left the battery in the cold garage this past winter and was afraid I had killed the battery by letting it get too low. When I would put the battery in the charger, it would charge for 5-10 seconds and then blink red. I saw elsewhere that if the battery is TOO low it will cause the charger to go into protect to prevent too much charging. Instead of jumpering from another battery (what some youtubers did) I would instead slide the battery on for 10 seconds, not fully latching in place, then slide it out of charge just as it was about to go into protect (red). I sat there for 5 or10 minutes sliding the battery on and off the charger every 10 seconds or so... and soon it would charge for 30 seconds at a time... and then a couple more short charge cycles and it resumed normal charging and has worked fine ever since. Moral of the story, when the battery starts cutting out, swap batteries and get it charging. Deplete the battery completely and you'll be doing the cha-cha-charger slide like I was. 😆
While it doesn't quite have the torque of the 110v corded model, both are WAY WAY better than waking up at 5:30 with a snow covered driveway, yanking a 2-stroke pull cord, pumping the fuel bulb, more cord pulls, fiddle with the choke, more pulls with excessive cursing, go back inside to warm up for a few minutes before swearing and trying again. I can knock out a single car width down the drive in the time I would have otherwise spent just starting the damned thing! :D@@TheLawnReview
It's mostly sunny when I mow. The battery meter is useless in the sun.😢 I had all the issues mentioned.. I will give this mower one more try before deciding to return..
Love the mower. On sale for $499. Mowed 2000 sq feet, tall head 6-12 inch. Then went over again to level 2. 4000sq feet. When 1 battery drained, stick it in the charger while I was using the large battery. Small recharged in 30 min. Most of it I pushed. The 2nd cut I self propelled. Took out 12 inch high no problem.
Sounds like you had 4 or 5 serious problems-i call that a hard no junk. Most of those problems would require bringing it back to costco or a repair shop with a brand new mower screw that.
I reckon the roll back feature is there to make sure the lawnmower doesn't slide down a slope, so it won't roll back on you unexpectedly. Give it a moment and I think it allows you to roll back.
I got the 40v used online when I needed to fix my push mower. Left it outside all Canadian winter, sorry neighbours... Still works fine somehow. I still use it on big inclines because of how light it is and around places where I have debris around because it just stops the blade pretty quick as soon as it hits something so I know I wont loose a leg. But I keep forgeting that I have to press the button before pulling so I keep ending up on videos like this. But other than that, sweet little thing that is. Love how quiet it is too.
I have the same mower that I got from Costco. The 4Ah battery failed right out of the box, it won’t take charge, which prompted me to claim warranty.. what a headache that was. Also, it doesn’t mulch at all, but instead just cuts the clipping as if bagging. I couldn’t see any noticeable difference of the clippings when bagged, side discharged or mulching. What am I doing wrong?
My son bought this mower and found the smaller one didn't hold charge for very long. It seemed to use both at the same time when mowing and he got just under 60 min first time. He charged little one again and got 20 min to finish front yard. (1/2 acre or less) My husband's mower uses one batter and then you turn key and use the other. I don't understand the 2 batteries if both are discharged together.
Cons: 1. Plastic throttle and safety where you know overtime you will break it.😂 2. The locking wheels for safety takes a bit to get used to, just stop the self propel then you can roll it around corners or back and forth. 3. Read the directions. I didn't and just watched a video and didnt know the self propel speed actually adjusts from left to right, no just slow and fast. So you can put the grey thing in the middle for half full speed. 4. If you and your neighbor are friendly and use each others tools they will want to use it 😂. Pros 1. I like that i didnt have to break out the gas and oil, no cleaning a filter, no pulling a starter. 2. Putting it together was 2 screws. The unpacking and throwing away the cardboard was harder than the assembly. 3. Sadly I hardly every cleaned the blade and undersides of my gas mower because of tipping it with gas and having to scrape. This folds up with the underside of the mower exposed so its really easy to clean both the front and underside of the mower where the balde is. 4. Its made to fold and stand, so it doesn't take up a ton of room like a gas mower. 5. Its much quieter than a gas mower.
I just unboxed mine and assembled it. I haven't mowed more than about 20 ft. of grass with it yet, but I agree with you about the propulsion and blade control levers. Man, they feel cheesy, and I hope they don't get broken. The rest of it feels solid, though, and my first impressions of build quality are good with the exception of the levers. Hopefully mine will be free of quirks.
@TheLawnReview Going on year 2. I love it. Nothing has broken. No gas and dealing with a pull start is awesome for my 57 year old delts. For yards that are 5k Sq feet or less I really see these electric mowers taking over the market. I just ordered 2 more 4ah 80v batteries from Costco even though the original batteries still work fine.
You just have to push it forward a bit before it will go into 'neutral.' Also, I have to occasionally stop and push the battery back in as it will lose contact.
@@TheLawnReview Love it. Third season with it. I try to push it on the flats when I can to save battery life. Have a Honda HRX217 too and prefer the Greenworks. I was given a Dewalt 20 volt mower with no blade and that is a rattly thing. I don't like the front wheel drive or the small wheels. It DOES cut okay though....I had to buy a blade adapter and blade from MTD - I think they must make the thing. It requires 2 20 volt batteries to even turn on and I use the Flexvolt batteries in them and get decent runtime. Not sure if draining the batteries that fast is good for them though.
$600? Might as well get an EGO. I got an Atlas from HarborFreight. $200 for push mower, $125 for 80V battery, $60 for charger. So all together under $400, I mow my lawn front & back, only about 2000 sq ft, only uses about 30% battery.
@@fposmith 1. I go to Harbor Freight often. 2. Not a Costco member 3. So main battery mowers I've seen are at HD or Lowes. They are pretty pricey. 4. To get a mower, charger, battery for less than $400, to me was worth it.
"How did you manage to push the cable inside the handlebar?" Could you kindly explain the method you employed to successfully insert the cable into the handlebar?
Right before the Milwaukee mower came out, I got one of those green works from Costco. I needed to replace a very old and worn out JD walk behind mower. First one I returned the whole mower kit because it had a shorted battery that smoked the charger. The replacement made it 1/3 of the way through my yard, then the freewheel clutch for the self propel failed. Tried to finish by pushing the mower to finish and then it crapped another battery in an amazing smoke show. I was then going to go with the Ego, since my neighbor had such great luck and it felt better than a Ryobi, but the usual suspects couldn’t tell me when one was going to be in. Then the Orange box got the Milwaukee and had the whole lawn care kit on sale for a blow out intro price including 3 12.0 batteries. Not one single issue and it feels like a gas mower. The ego kinda feels like a heavy plastic starship, the Milwaukee is heavier and more rigid than the greenworks. All 3 *even with my limited experience with greenworks* have very good power.
@@TheLawnReview I am using the Milwaukee and it’s lawn care bundle it came with. It is still amazing and my wife, who has no mowing expertise can handle it just fine. My mother in law needs a mower, but she’s on a tighter budget. I’m recommending the ego to her.
Great review you mentioned how it feels like a gas mower with steel deck etc. would you say it feels lighter than a gas mower? That’s probably one of the only reasons I would switch to battery from gas, something easier to manoeuvre with s 21” deck.
Hey Marc! Thank you for the question! It’s 25 lbs lighter than my Honda gas mower. I would say it’s considerably lighter. Easier to maneuver than gas but with the lighter weight comes less “control” because if you’re lawn is really bumpy then it can kinda jostle a bit more! Give it a shot from Lowe’s and you try it out for like 30 or 60 days and return it no questions asked.
Took mine back to Costco today. Battery quit charging. Less than one year old . Save the box. Easy return. Now 100$ off. Not sure if I will rebuy. I gave away my old Honda and my friend never used it. Says I can have it back. Might just do that.
Why didn't you just call Greenworks ? They would have sent you a new battery immediately ! What your saying makes no sense ! Just rebuy now ! You will save $100 get two batteries, a quick charger that will charge the 4AH battery in under 45 minutes plus an extra blade !
Had my 60v greenworks mower for 3 yrs now, my switchover system works perfectly, it slows down, switches over to other battery full turbo speed, instantly
2:47. Sweet potato pie...that's what I'm talking about! 4:35. Maybe I walk too slow, but I have 0.5 acres and it takes me at least 1:20 to mow it. I would be concerned about running out of juice with this mower. No way I could cut my yard in 65 minutes...I have a pretty big and wide berm hill in the backyard that is 3 feet high from ground level. it slows me down.
Hmm - yeah if it takes that long then this battery may not get you as far as you need. You can always buy another battery to slap on here after the first one dies.
If you get the one from Costco, it comes with two batteries and takes both batteries at once. When the first battery runs low, the second battery kicks in so you can finish the yard ! It also comes with a quick charger. It will charge the 4AH battery in under 45 minutes ! It comes with an extra blade as well !
can somebody please let me know what ride height is best for this mower, I have been using the default setting which I think was 4 on this mower. I recently came to know that I might be cutting too low, because of the amount of weeds that grew this season.
I bought the GW 21' today at Costco for 499.00. Like the mower itself, but the battery life leaves something left to be desired. Read all the reviews on this mower and people were saying they were mowing the upper 40 acres. I have a 1/3 third of an acre lot with a 2000 Sq. Ft. house on it, and a small wooded area. I charged the batteries 4 times and just was able to finish mowing with the help of my old gas powered Toro.
@@jaymes7521 there must be something defective. I have 10k Sq feet lot. Picked up the last one at my Costco for $499. Maybe 5k of grass... didn't even need the 2nd battery. Only issue I had was figuring out how to get the LED light to go off. Wasn't able to do it (but maybe operator error?).
@@jaymes7521 This is the most convoluted statement I've seen here . Upper 40 acres ? Charged the batteries four times on the first day ? What are you smoking ? I want some ! It must be some good shit to make you hallucinate like that !
Have you tried only using one battery at a time? I fully charged it today and while I used that one, I had the other one charging. Well like 5 minutes in or less, each time I used the self propell for like 2 seconds (I didn't need it I was just testing it), like 5 seconds after it would turn off on me a few times and then it wouldn't let me turn it back on. So I was wondering if you need both batteries for the self propell or do you think my battery is defective?
Hmm - that's weird. I had the same thing happen when it was supposed to auto-switch from one battery to the next when one died. What happens when you put both in?
At 4:25 you talked abt able to mowe 3/4 acre of lawn. Do you have slope in your lawn? My batteries died very soon and was able to mow 1//4th my 3/4 acre lawn.. but out of that 1/4 lawn, 3/4th was slope For now, my impression.. plan 3 days of mowing on a 3/4 acre job.. Unless you are a RUclipsr where this is your job and can spend whole day charging and then cut
Well I am a RUclipsr where this is my whole day. But that doesn’t sound right - I can easily get my lawn mowed on one charge and it’s about the same size… Did you have the self propelled function doing all the work?
@TheLawnReview Appreciate your reply. Yes, it took me 3 charges to do about 0.5 acre of my lawn. Yes, I was using self propeller for my entire yard. I did notice that my 2amp battery was dieing in first 5 mins, leaving no charge. May be because of faulty battery I had this bad experience. Will be calling in Greenworks support or will go to Costco to replace it.
I was reluctant because for the price because of the 1 large 1 small battery issue as Costco chose to spec it 2 big batteries would have been much more appealing IMHP
If you smell after using your leaf blower , try using non ethanol gas and a high quality 100:1 synthetic oil. Clean your air filter and put a new spark plug in, cleaning the spark arrestor will also make a huge difference .
My experience is that the batteries last longer if you bag. Seems like the motor doesn't work as hard because it does not have to work as hard if you bag.
We just purchased this mower from Costco. When we were putting it together, we couldn't get the upper handle attached because there was so much cord. Is that normal? What do you do with the extra length of cord?
The mower has a 21” cutting width, but it looks like you only cut around a foot of new grass during each pass. Is this because the mower is battery powered, or is that just your mowing preference? Great video. I decided not to get this mower from Costco after watching this.
Hey Ken! Thanks for the question! I’ve always done that regardless of gas or electric. I like to overlap cuts because I know I’m getting everything that was pushed down from the wheels on the previous pass.
The blade adapter is plastic for a specific reason. The motor's shaft is quite a bit thinner in diameter than a gas mower. As a result, they made the blade adapter plastic so that when someone inadvertently hits a stump or large rock, it breaks the blade adapter instead of bending the shaft. Much less expensive to replace a plastic blade adapter rather than an entire electric motor.
Im not really into battery equipment but i did buy a greenworks 60v weedeatet its better then i thought it lasted as long as my stihl gas weedeater.but as for a lawnmower to me i domt think they have the power of the gas.my 170 cc briggs can shoot the grass 5 feet or more my neighbors battery ooerated luckily 3 feet leaves clumps
Why didn't you just take it back instead of complaining about it ? Something is obviously wrong with it ! There is not a manufacturer on the planet that has a 100% defect free record ! You got a bad one ! I'm sorry that happened to you. Take it back and get a replacement. If the next one has the same issue, then you know it's a bad "lot" ! Greenworks should be notified immediately so they can pull that lot from the floor and find out what happened instead of keep selling defective mowers to unsuspecting customers ! The one I got from Costco operates flawlessly ! It does everything it say's it's suppose to ! I am very happy with it ! A great mower at a great price ! No one in the industry can beat them at this point ! It's just unfortunate that a reviewer got the bad one !
@@TheLawnReview Well, OK then. I just got mine a few weeks ago. I love it ! except for having to let up about a foot before you try to turn. That takes some getting use to !
Ryobi rep walks in to a bar and said "We just launched our OPE at Home Depot. Round of beers for everyone!" EGO rep walks in a few minutes later and said "We just launched our OPE at Lowes. Round of beers for everyone!" Greenworks rep walks in and says "We just launched our OPE at Costco." Other 2 tell the bartender "Tabs are on that guy."
Those kind of problems with battery and battery transfer would not impress me. I would want a new mower to do what it is suppose to do. It would go back to seller.
Hey Gregg! You’re right, I overlap every time I cut. It helps ensue I get a consistent cut. Adds a little bit of time for me. But less time than having to do a double mow
Hi Tyler, great review and info. At the end of the day, its about the cut quality for me. How does the mulching cut quality compare to a Toro Super Recycler or a high-end Honda? Thanks!
Hey Matt! Thank you for the kind words! If money is no concern, have you looked at the Milwaukee M18 Fuel mower? I’ve used a Honda (GCV 190 engine) and it’s collecting dust right now because of how much I like the Milwaukee.
@@TheLawnReview there is a slight time delay for the trans to disengage. just let off the paddles one or 2 steps before you finish the row, so the wheels roll forward at least a quarter rotation not under power, and it will pull back no issues. I know that's a compromise, but it's the way it works. Thanks for the good content.
It's a safety mechanism. In SP mode you cannot pull the unit backwards. You need to turn off the SP, push the mower slightly forward to unlock the wheels and then it will go in reverse.
Whats the return policy at costco? Could u return this mower every so often to keep getting new batteries?😂 costco no questions ask returns are the best
This mower is on sale for 499 at Costco right now. I think you got a bad unit as well. Mine hasn’t had any of those out of the box issues. Thanks for reviewing this mower and putting it on my radar.
I bought the same model as yours, and I love it! I only 2 issues: 1. How you were able to insert the handle so easily during installation? I could not slide the excess cable down through the rail, so I had to struggle to snake the cable into the space above the handle release. 2. Like you, my 4Ah battery died after around 4 uses. My voltmeter showed it was at 73V, but the charger did not “see” it, so after attempting to charge for 5 seconds, the charger fan would stop blowing, and the red LED would start flashing. There’s another RUclips video that used the 2Ah battery to “jump start” the dead battery, which also reset it so that the charger could see it again. However, I just called Greenworks (their number is on the battery, and they sent me a new one within a week. Since they didn’t ask for the other battery, I will try jump starting it to see if I can revive it. Another tip: The left battery is used first, so the Greenworks customer service rep recommended I put the 4Ah battery in the left slot and the 2Ah battery in the right slot. The 2Ah battery is essentially your reserve battery.
Interesting - must have been a weird handle thing you had. Glad to know your battery hack and that you had a good experience with their customer service.
Not sure how you could give this approval with all those problems, no way would I buy this from the review, many other 21inch battery power mowers to choose from.. also review was very helpful but too long
I have the 21" 80-volt mower and it is a piece of shit, I hate the dam thing. The biggest issue is it is a pain in the ass to get the wheels to un lock to pull the mower backward.
Thanks for the response, Peter! I actually got a replacement for this one and now it works like a dream after you get it figured out.
Yeah you gotta get used to turning it off before you make turns @@JeffBrown1966
Yep - they make great products. Glad you liked yours. Are these your first battery powered lawn tools?
Love it - thanks so much for taking the time to respond and glad to hear about your results!
Thanks for information how to turn the mower. I haven't been letting go of the self-propelled mode.
Can the light be turned off
The best deals on these seem to be from Costco !
Just got this mower direct from Greenworks on an off season deal. This will be the first lawn I've had to take care of so I hope to learn more from your channel before spring!
Thanks for watching! Hope you stick around
How much did they sell it for?
I have had the non-self propelled 80v version for 2 years and it works flawlessly. Cleanup is easy. Storing is even easier. Batteries switch automatically but sometimes I use the bigger battery alone just to exercise all of them. One of the extra batteries I bought came with a free inverter. That inverter enabled us to have a small TV and a lamp in the living room during a 36 hour power outage after a storm. I love Greenworks products.
Glad you like it! This one’s only Hangup is the adjustment to the self propelled
Once you get used to it, it aint all that bad!
Thanks for the video. It’s on sale again next week for $529 at Costco. I feel like that’s a good enough price to give it a try.. will give my 15 year old Honda some rest, but I’ll hang on to that one just in case.
Let me know how you like it. The self propelled function takes some getting used to but it’s nice.
I have the 21in 2x24V mower that looks identical- I noticed if I had the self propelled lever pulled it won’t go back so I let it go and it won’t lock up. Luckily my batteries do switch over automatically. Great review!
Thanks for the kind words - glad you like yours!
Thanks! Also enjoy your videos! I’m new to the lawn stuff and wanting it to look good. I’m in eastern NC and my yard has tons of river rock- any advice would be great! Also have 3 dogs so the backyard is harder to grow but still trying!
Mine work great ..... got lots of good compliment from people that I knew
Wow! That's a rave review. Glad I could be helpful and really happy to hear about your experience!
I see someone else has already made the comment about how the wheels locking is a safety thing. Also if you buy it from Costco you get an extended warranty for the batteries for free. It adds an additional 4 years for a total of 8 on the batteries.
Yeah that's incredible. Thanks for commenting. Also can grab the $1.50 hot dog and soft drink combo at Costco.
If you let go of the drive shortly before stopping it will free
@@Phantomrooster29 Thanks! Learned that and still use this one all the time. Greenworks sent me a new one.
@@TheLawnReview have you seen an issue where it stops mowing and the batteries start flashing and you remove and reinsert them what it starts working again and has about 50% battery?
@@Phantomrooster29 That happened to me with the first one of these I owned. It didn't really change from one to the other.
Thanks for watching - I really appreciate it. Hope you like yours! Once you get used to the self-propelled function then it really is a great mower.
Are you happy with your purchase? Glad I'm not crazy.
It is meant to be like this to give time for motor to get power.
Ha! Now, I know why I'm having such a problem turning. I've been tearing up the lawn. Thanks.
Win.
Glad you like yours so far!
I really appreciate the kind words!
No I haven’t used Kress before but I’ve heard of them. They don’t sell them around where i live.
Thanks for the review. Was deciding between this and a dewalt and the Costco one is 400 cheaper, so going with that.
Good move
Quite enjoy this motor! Agree about the production lot issue - no issue with batteries or switching over. It won't turn/reverse immediately out of self-propelled mode, so I just let that up about six inches early.
Went about 10 months before I realized it had a Turbo button, though.
Glad yours is going well. Do you use the turbo?
@@TheLawnReview ...I do now! It was actually your lawn mower comparison review - I was like, "oh damn, the new models this year have a turbo button". Little did I know…
Now, that's a helpful review, thank you.
That’s why we exist!
Thanks for the review. I’m hoping they fine tune some of those issues, and I’ll consider one.
I still use this all the time - if you can get it for a good deal then its a great mower.
Great video thanks for sharing, what is the runtime on Turbo mode?
About 3/4 of the normal run time - appreciate your comment and kind words
Yea, Costco just raised the price by $30. It's still a bargain at $529. !
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet but for the turbo mode, it’s made to automatically stop turbo after a couple seconds. It says it drains the battery quicker and suggests only using turbo mode when needed. Just thought I’d mention it incase someone wanted to know!
Good point, Katy!
Both of those are great products we've used. Let us know how it goes!
Wow. That is a serious problem haha. Battery would definitely just start
One the issues I have with greenworks is the customer services, but the products are well made 👌
Agreed - mostly great products.
Awesome review! Looking at this mower, wondering the lifespan of the batteries... debating between this one and a toro gas recyler self propelled 22" mower.... Any thoughts? Thanks ☺️
I'm doing a full review comparing battery and gas coming soon
Good review. I am thinking of upgrading my Greenworks push lawn mower to a self propelled one. So I have been wondering if it is worth it.
It’s pretty good once you get used to it
Why would you ever buy a push mower ? Are you a Masochist ?
@@fposmith It is still electric just not self propelled. I bought that a few years ago because it uses the same batteries as all my other Greenworks tools. So I have 4 batteries which with its rapid charger easily enables be to mow my lawn without ever having to wait for a battery to charge.
@@fposmith Because perhaps he lives on flat land. Or maybe they didn't offer a self propelled version when he bought it years ago. Or maybe the self propelled versions at the time were gen 1 and not very good. You see there are many reasons. Think it through next time.
Amazing review, how is this not a 100K Sub channel!
My man!! I appreciate that!!
Thank you for doing a review using the mower on a nicely maintained lawn. So many of these reviews are done in pastures with excessively high grass and weeds or fields with hardly any grass at all.
Thanks for the kind words! I hope it was insightful!
I like how you completely glossed over the lettering that says extended 8 year warranty when you register. I have been looking at EGO and Husqvarna, and both only offer 3 years max.
I took advantage of it and they sent me a new one. It's a great mower. But confusing.
Interesting. Glad you are sticking with it!
It's relatively cheap compared to the other brands with worse reviews ! Aye !
@@TheLawnReviewso our batteries died quick. Worked for like a half hr
Thanks for watching!
Glad you liked it! They sent me a new one and I'm going to break it in this weekend.
How do you like it?
While it doesn't quite have the torque of the 110v corded model, both are WAY WAY better than waking up at 5:30 with a snow covered driveway, yanking a 2-stroke pull cord, pumping the fuel bulb, more cord pulls, fiddle with the choke, more pulls with excessive cursing, go back inside to warm up for a few minutes before swearing and trying again. I can knock out a single car width down the drive in the time I would have otherwise spent just starting the damned thing! :D@@TheLawnReview
It's mostly sunny when I mow. The battery meter is useless in the sun.😢
I had all the issues mentioned..
I will give this mower one more try before deciding to return..
It took me a bit to get used to, so try it a few more times
Ca, mon man, just cup your hand over it ! I mean, really ?
Love the mower. On sale for $499. Mowed 2000 sq feet, tall head 6-12 inch. Then went over again to level 2. 4000sq feet. When 1 battery drained, stick it in the charger while I was using the large battery. Small recharged in 30 min. Most of it I pushed. The 2nd cut I self propelled. Took out 12 inch high no problem.
Wow that’s awesome. Thanks for watching!!
Sounds like you had 4 or 5 serious problems-i call that a hard no junk. Most of those problems would require bringing it back to costco or a repair shop with a brand new mower screw that.
I ended up loving this mower as I got used to it
I reckon the roll back feature is there to make sure the lawnmower doesn't slide down a slope, so it won't roll back on you unexpectedly. Give it a moment and I think it allows you to roll back.
Yep you just have to disengage the self propelled function
I got the 40v used online when I needed to fix my push mower. Left it outside all Canadian winter, sorry neighbours... Still works fine somehow. I still use it on big inclines because of how light it is and around places where I have debris around because it just stops the blade pretty quick as soon as it hits something so I know I wont loose a leg. But I keep forgeting that I have to press the button before pulling so I keep ending up on videos like this. But other than that, sweet little thing that is. Love how quiet it is too.
Even messed around with it with my home made portable solar station. Honestly had a lot more fun with this than I should've.
That’s awesome! Glad you’ve had fun with it!
You should have returned it to Costco!!
I think it supposed to switch from one to the other, but had a tough time doing that for me.
With the wheels locking and not going back stop the mower push it forward a little then it will unlock and go back.
Thanks! I'll give it a try. They just sent me a new one.
Cons:
1. Plastic throttle and safety where you know overtime you will break it.😂
Pros
Great summary! How long have you had yours?
I just unboxed mine and assembled it. I haven't mowed more than about 20 ft. of grass with it yet, but I agree with you about the propulsion and blade control levers. Man, they feel cheesy, and I hope they don't get broken. The rest of it feels solid, though, and my first impressions of build quality are good with the exception of the levers. Hopefully mine will be free of quirks.
@@Dwigt_Rortugal Once you get used to it, it feels a lot better. Hope you like it! Make sure to check back in
And, it's got headlights ! So you can mow at night, when it's cool !
I’m not sure what you mean. I like sweet potatoes, broccoli casserole and my drunk uncle is the life of the party!!!

You just have to push it forward a bit before it will go into 'neutral.' Also, I have to occasionally stop and push the battery back in as it will lose contact.
Interesting - hadn't heard of that trick. How have you liked yours so far?

3. So main battery mowers I've seen are at HD or Lowes. They are pretty pricey.
4. To get a mower, charger, battery for less than $400, to me was worth it.
"How did you manage to push the cable inside the handlebar?"
Could you kindly explain the method you employed to successfully insert the cable into the handlebar?
Sorry for the delay! I used a flathead screwdriver to cram the cable down in there!
@@TheLawnReview Thanks for answering the question and informing me about the procedure. I appreciate it!
Which one are you using now? We did a long review of the Milwaukee as well you can check out, and it is our favorite. Feels just like gas.
@@TheLawnReview I am using the Milwaukee and it’s lawn care bundle it came with. It is still amazing and my wife, who has no mowing expertise can handle it just fine.
My mother in law needs a mower, but she’s on a tighter budget. I’m recommending the ego to her.
BS !
Anyone have an idea if you can turn off the light in front? Just wondering if that could save the battery a bit..
Wondering what the difference between a Gen II and what currently on there site.
They used to sell a black one that I think is on Amazon still, but had to make a different exclusive model for Costco.
I think some of the Kobalt mowers sold at Lowes are rebadged Greenworks mowers and this may be one of them.
Yep 100% I've heard that straight from Greenworks
Took mine back to Costco today. Battery quit charging. Less than one year old . Save the box. Easy return. Now 100$ off. Not sure if I will rebuy. I gave away my old Honda and my friend never used it. Says I can have it back. Might just do that.
Wow I hate to hear that! Seems crazy about the battery. They can be finnicky for sure...
EGO was having a big deal with extra batteries and lower costs and stuff I got all my stuff I like it
Why didn't you just call Greenworks ? They would have sent you a new battery immediately ! What your saying makes no sense ! Just rebuy now ! You will save $100 get two batteries, a quick charger that will charge the 4AH battery in under 45 minutes plus an extra blade !
what kind of grass is that??
Tall Fescue
Had the issues you had been solved?
More so have to get used to the self propelled function. Otherwise this mower has really grown on me and I use it all the time.
Had my 60v greenworks mower for 3 yrs now, my switchover system works perfectly, it slows down, switches over to other battery full turbo speed, instantly
Love the mower now
Depends on the type of grass you have. If you have fescue I would crank this to the highest setting.
Battery all day for me. Nice review.
Yep. This is my first season handling my own lawn care. I love not having to deal with gas.

Also you mentioned the battery doesn’t switch automatically.. seems problematic
Yeah that got annoying fast
Any opinions on the costco 80v greenworks offering for $530 vs. Ego 2135 at lowes for $600 ?
I would go EGO and get other EGO tools in their 56V battery lineup
@@TheLawnReview thanks for the recommendation.
@@TheLawnReview It worked just fine when I put both in. Just thought I could use one while I charge the other.
At 4:25 you talked abt able to mowe 3/4 acre of lawn. Do you have slope in your lawn? My batteries died very soon and was able to mow 1//4th my 3/4 acre lawn.. but out of that 1/4 lawn, 3/4th was slope
For now, my impression.. plan 3 days of mowing on a 3/4 acre job.. Unless you are a RUclipsr where this is your job and can spend whole day charging and then cut
Well I am a RUclipsr where this is my whole day.
But that doesn’t sound right - I can easily get my lawn mowed on one charge and it’s about the same size…
Did you have the self propelled function doing all the work?
@TheLawnReview Appreciate your reply. Yes, it took me 3 charges to do about 0.5 acre of my lawn. Yes, I was using self propeller for my entire yard. I did notice that my 2amp battery was dieing in first 5 mins, leaving no charge. May be because of faulty battery I had this bad experience. Will be calling in Greenworks support or will go to Costco to replace it.
@saurabhm19782 return it!
I was reluctant because for the price because of the 1 large 1 small battery issue as Costco chose to spec it 2 big batteries would have been much more appealing IMHP
You can definitely buy an additional battery but I agree - not sure why they would do it that way.
If you smell after using your leaf blower , try using non ethanol gas and a high quality 100:1 synthetic oil. Clean your air filter and put a new spark plug in, cleaning the spark arrestor will also make a huge difference .
Thanks for the tip! I'll try that!
Sounds pretty simple. Yet nowhere near as simple as slide in charged battery and go.
My experience is that the batteries last longer if you bag. Seems like the motor doesn't work as hard because it does not have to work as hard if you bag.
Interesting - I wonder if the bag helps pull air in and makes the cut more efficient?
Greenworks pro 80v or Ryobi Crosscut 40v ?
Greenworks
@@TheLawnReview is the 60v greenwood also a good option ?
We just purchased this mower from Costco. When we were putting it together, we couldn't get the upper handle attached because there was so much cord. Is that normal? What do you do with the extra length of cord?
Hi Linda! Yes I dealt with that a bit. I used a flat head screwdriver to cram it in!
Can you mow the entire lawn in turbo mode? Or is it only for a couple passes?
You can do the whole thing turbo if you want.
You don't really need it ! Cuts through wet, tall grass like butter !
Were you able to get a replacement battery? How was the customer service?
Did the rear wheel reverse get fixed? How?
Still working it out! Luckily had the one from my blower to use. I'll keep you updated.
Can you use a battery powered lawn mower in damp grass?
For sure! Might be a little less effective than cutting it dry but yeah it won’t mess with the electrical components or anything
Those mowers don’t break I had mine for 8years I leave it 120 degree sun and rain hurricane 0 issue man…
You are only cutting half a mower width at a time, this will put less stain/work on the mower. But twice as long to cut the lawn.
Yeah that’s how I like to do it
i have the trimmer from greenworks (40v) and for the pricepoint i think its pretty good value.
Yeah they have some really good stuff
Great info, thanks!!
Thanks John!
Is the blade adapter plastic?
Parts of it are plastic, yes. But seems extremely durable honestly.
Can you buy the plastic blade adapter?
you just have to practice disengaging the drive for a couple feet, before maneuvering.
The one in this video didn't disengage - I reached out and they sent me a new one.
That’s a good point. Electric mowers still have a way to go but have improved a lot
What is on the floor of that shed
Whatchumean? Astro turf?
I don’t think you watched the full video. I use this mower all the time now. Just had to get used to it.
@@TheLawnReview Well, OK then. I just got mine a few weeks ago. I love it ! except for having to let up about a foot before you try to turn. That takes some getting use to !
Ryobi rep walks in to a bar and said "We just launched our OPE at Home Depot. Round of beers for everyone!"
EGO rep walks in a few minutes later and said "We just launched our OPE at Lowes. Round of beers for everyone!"
Greenworks rep walks in and says "We just launched our OPE at Costco."
Other 2 tell the bartender "Tabs are on that guy."
hahaha yeah its a surprisingly good place to grab people
Those kind of problems with battery and battery transfer would not impress me. I would want a new mower to do what it is suppose to do. It would go back to seller.
We did take this one back and exchange it
Not trying to be picky/snippy, but it appears that you’re only making half passes when you mow and not using the full width of the deck ?
Hey Gregg! You’re right, I overlap every time I cut. It helps ensue I get a consistent cut. Adds a little bit of time for me. But less time than having to do a double mow
Do they do firmware updates?
No I don't think it has connectivity...wish it was like a Tesla though!
@@TheLawnReview Thanks!
@@TheLawnReview M18 not good. I try it already, to many problems and is 2.5 time the price. Sorry mate.

hahaha thank you!
I had the same issue with the back tires locking up when attempting to pull the mower backwards. Returned it to Lowes.
Really? So weird. Never had that happen before.
@@caseyewald6964 Thanks for the detailed response - how did you figure that out?
It's a safety mechanism. In SP mode you cannot pull the unit backwards. You need to turn off the SP, push the mower slightly forward to unlock the wheels and then it will go in reverse.
@@jessicamorrison3521 Figured that out the long way - still super inconvenient to do every time I make a pass.
Whats the return policy at costco? Could u return this mower every so often to keep getting new batteries?😂 costco no questions ask returns are the best
I mean yeah you could…
This mower is on sale for 499 at Costco right now. I think you got a bad unit as well. Mine hasn’t had any of those out of the box issues. Thanks for reviewing this mower and putting it on my radar.
Thanks - I've been using it often and have really grown to like it.
I bought the same model as yours, and I love it!
I only 2 issues:
Another tip:
The left battery is used first, so the Greenworks customer service rep recommended I put the 4Ah battery in the left slot and the 2Ah battery in the right slot. The 2Ah battery is essentially your reserve battery.
Interesting - must have been a weird handle thing you had. Glad to know your battery hack and that you had a good experience with their customer service.
Wait till you try to get replacement parts!
They replaced this one for me! The whole mower!
Not sure how you could give this approval with all those problems, no way would I buy this from the review, many other 21inch battery power mowers to choose from.. also review was very helpful but too long
Thanks, Nick. Once you get used to the self-propelled thing, it is actually pretty sweet. I've come to really enjoy this mower.
Which model number is this?
Not sure - this is the one they sell at Costco
