- Ra'eese Aleem demonstrated his dominance over Marcus Bates in their rematch on Saturday night, maintaining his undefeated record. Aleem showcased superior boxing skills, eventually stopping his injured opponent in the 10th round of their 122-pound WBA elimination match at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Bates, who seemed to have injured his right wrist in the ninth round, refrained from using his right hand in the 10th round. Referee Gary Rosato halted the bout when Bates turned away from Aleem after absorbing a left hook to the body with about 50 seconds left in the final round.
The stoppage occurred at 2:18 of the 10th round. Judges Glenn Feldman, Tom Schreck, and Steve Weisfeld all scored the fight in favor of Aleem with identical scores of 90-81 when the action was halted.
Originally scheduled to face Tramaine Williams, Aleem's opponent changed to Bates on three days' notice due to Stephen Fulton testing positive for COVID-19. Aleem, 30, and Bates, 26, both experienced bouts lasting more than eight rounds for the first time in their respective careers.
Their first encounter in April 2018 ended with Aleem winning by unanimous decision in an eight-round bout at 2300 Arena in Philadelphia. Bates had previously alleged that his cut man, supposedly friendly with Aleem's team, had tampered with his water to give Aleem an advantage in their initial fight. Aleem, dismissing these claims, ensured there were no such controversies in their rematch.
The 10th round was particularly one-sided before Rosato's intervention. Bates managed to connect with a counter left hook in the ninth round, but Aleem had controlled the match, pressuring Bates and out-landing him in the eighth round. Aleem's consistent pressure and well-placed punches throughout the fight demonstrated his superiority over Bates.
