- Amilcar Vidal demonstrated his preparedness on Saturday night, especially against legitimate middleweight contenders. Although the unbeaten Uruguayan showcased some defensive flaws, he secured a majority decision victory over his toughest opponent to date, Immanuwel Aleem, in a closely contested 10-round, 162-pound bout on the Jermell Charlo-Brian Castano undercard at AT&T Center.
Despite being just the third opponent to extend Vidal (13-0, 11 KOs) beyond the second round and the second to go the distance with him, Aleem (18-3-2, 11 KOs) produced strong moments of his own. Judges Ruben Carrion and Glen Crocker scored the fight 97-93 in favor of Vidal, while Anthony De Los Santos scored it even at 95-95.
Vidal, who had previously secured three consecutive first-round knockouts against unbeaten opponents, faced a more experienced Aleem. Vidal's body attacks slowed Aleem at times, but the resilient Aleem managed to withstand Vidal's power overall.
Despite Aleem slipping to a 1-2-1 record in his past four fights, the fight was a fan-friendly opener for the "Showtime Championship Boxing" tripleheader. The action-packed 10th round followed a memorable ninth round where Aleem and Vidal traded hard shots from close distances, entertaining the crowd thoroughly.
In the eighth round, Aleem's left hook momentarily stopped Vidal, but the latter retaliated with powerful head and body shots. The ninth round showcased a back-and-forth exchange of power punches, with both fighters embracing respectfully at the final bell.
As the fight progressed, Aleem continued to land hard shots, including a thudding right hand in the sixth round and a left hook that got Vidal's attention in the second round. However, Vidal's strategic body shots and aggressive approach wore down Aleem over the course of the bout.
