this was the first evo i watched, it was early in the morning right after i had gotten out of work, i was betting on this match on salty bets with 1:5 odds, when snake eyez won i converted to learning grapplers that very day, this set is the REASON i play street fighter.
I love match breakdowns like this. Shows us casuals what high-level players may be thinking, but also saves us from having to rewind 10x to figure out what happened.
I miss SF4. I honestly believe it was the most amazing street fighter ever created. Played a good thousands of hours of it. All the tournaments, the hype, the beautiful comebacks OMG! Great analysis on this match. Cheers
Same man, SF4 is the best SF so far. The gameplay itself is so much fun, you can spend years on the training stage without getting bored. Combos felt incredible. You could pull of a great combo, lose, and still be proud of something.
Here's another tidbit I remember from the time - as certain points in the match when Snake Eyez is kind of rocking back and forth, that's him both maintaing spacing and repeatedly inputting half circles back and forward, so he can command grab on reaction. Insane stuff and great video.
@@Robozilla Makes me sad the way this game has gone by the wayside. 3s and ST scenes are super strong but bearly anyone plays SF4 anymore, in tournament or not. The SFxT scene is better. Here's hoping that guy who's doing rollback netcode for the game gets it finished.
There was this guy who would come in the arcade back in the days and just sit back and watch. And nobody ever knew his name. We thought we were the shit using Ken and Ryu. This guy used one quarter and kicked everybody's ass who came in there with Zangief. I learned that day back in the early 90's that Zangief is not to be mucked with.
As a Zangief player myself, there's a little important tip I could add myself. I'll break it down with the exact timing: - An important grappler tip, is to not always rely on grab, but use the fear of grabs to catch your opponent trying to escape. See also Alex Valle vs Bonchan. - At 7:55, SnakeEyez has cornered Xian, who jumped in fear of the grab. SnakeEyez hit him with a flying headbutt; this was on reaction, notice he did it a split second after Xian jumped. - Getting hit by flying headbutt is actually very dangerous, because it did 600 stun (this is a shoutout to a SF2 bug). 2 Headbutts will stun ANY character, which put the fear of death in Xian. - If Xian jumped again he would've been stunned/dead. He could also dodged with backdash, but backdashing in the corner is very risky because it's doesn't build distance, leading to an obvious punish. - Xian also could've done nothing, but if SnakeEyez saw that hesitation, he would've used a SPD. - At 7:57 Xian kinda took the cowardly way by using an immediate Ultra ("Reversal"). This was actually very unreliable, because most players only get hit by random Ultra if they went too committed with an active move. But still, he didn't expect it to get, he just wanted to run the clock like Round 1. - Unfortunately he miscalculated the time left, and paid the price. But still, he might not have made this mistake if he wasn't put in such a sudden moment of risk. Side note: I did get to play Xian in a casual in the same year, and did fluke a lucky win (was 1-3 LOL). He did admit for the rest of that year, SnakeEyez was a bit of a mental demon for him.
I remember watching this back when I was just getting out of high school. Man the memories I miss the greatness back then but I look forward to the history we will be seeing ahead.
Dude, that SoCal team got cooked by Snakes reverse OCV. One of the hypest and most improbable moments in SF history. Id love to see you do another video. Keep rockin it steady, SF4 style.
Another interesting video would have been Luffy. He actually won this evo and did so 1. barely ever competing in the USA, 2. Using a character no one was even getting “good” results with, 3. played with a PS1 controller and 4. Became the first European to win evo. Luffy was almost unbeatable around this time and xian was one of the few who could consistently beat him whereas snake eyes had never beaten luffy, (to my knowledge) and was eliminated by him in this tournament.
Xian can be quite an interesting subject too as he's the "average" player who got good and then won Evo on SF4 in a period dominated by japanese players. His environment wasn't the best (singapore is actually strongly against video games) but he became a champion... Because of his love for the game.
I was there in the crowd for the SoCal vs NorCal set That was the most hype I’ve ever been in a match and even more proud to be from Socal lol Snake Eyez was forever a legend to me for that
Snake eyes and Xian did a lot of SFV tournaments pre covid if you want to watch their matches and Xian is now back on the scene in Street fighter league.
I remember watching this at the time, & losing my mind! It's easily one of my favorite matches in SF4, I still come back to watch it years later! I love the quality, style, & editing you do for your vids, top notch content! I'll be enjoying the ride here, keep up the good work man! 👏
I think the reason why Capcom nerfed Zangief so much in SFV is bcos scrub don't know how to handle SPD, and they were trying very hard to attract beginners.
Excellent break down. Honestly I'm positive I enjoyed this video more than I would have enjoyed the match at the time. Your analysis and editing fully added value.
Gotta talk about Poongko's Seth during 2011. Shadowloo Showdown. His EVO run which he got top 3? And perfected Daigo was sick. Watching him dunk on Yun was breathtaking.
As a person who just has interest in Street Fighter/ Fighting games. that quick small little explanation of all the Terms you use in the video is just... appreciated.. LOL thank you
Snake Eyez bodied Norcal with a reverse OCV (One Character Victory, but reverse because he was the LAST CHARACTER/PLAYER FOR SoCal) during Socal Regionals 2014. Whole place was hype as hell. I didn't play SF IV, but good lord Snake Eyez knows his SPD ranges down to the freakin' pixel!
I was always really disappointed that Snake Eyes didn't throw himself into SFV more, as he was legitimately my favorite player to watch in SFIV. I realize that V wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but here's hoping he'll return to the pro scene in SFVI.
match breakdowns like this are so interesting and i could watch them all day, even though i play a lot more guilty gear over street fighter. amazing work!
Guilty Gear is such an amazing series and I'm slowly learning it so I can cover it too. They have such great players and hype matches that deserve the spotlight
Honestly one of my favorite EVO's and both Xian and SnakeEyez are the main reasons why. Both are incredible players playing what are generally regarded as sub-optimal characters but they've just devoted themselves to their respective characters so that watching them play is poetry in motion.
The fact that your breaking it down really help’s understand this more. I used to play street fighter ( not at this lvl ) just wanna say thank you for that!!!!! Definitely
That would have been the *perfect* time to hear the SF 4 announcer go "Incredible! I can't believe it!" That was an amazing match. Great job for both Snake Eyez and Xian.
SF back in the day, you could not reach high level play because it was easy, you had to know what you were doing. That's what made those moments so great to watch...👏👏👏
The combo at 3:00 is not a stance swap combo. Also, Xian is not hitconfirming at 7:50. Hands is safe there. If he were hitconfirming a single hit, he would have gone into EX hands cuz it gives him sweep afterwards. Great video my man. Still one of my favorite matches of all time.
5:50 I can't even think of a fighting game where pre-jump frames are throwable... I'm glad this popped in my recommendations to remind me of the match but the video feels like it's an elaborate troll with all the mistakes being well-known misconceptions
@@Basarapoil yea true I forgot to mention this one. The whole point of a 0+1f startup super is that you dont have even a single frame to enter prejump before the super hits.
