Do you have any insight/advice on this as to if it's better for the peg/guy to fail than them hold and result in a torn tent instead? Thanks.

just watched all of your videos, and I love them. I am going to backpacking on a trail with high attitude (3500m )and crazy wind storms and snow next month, but I only have that 3F floating cloud tent which you viewed previously. could you recommend me some tent Which are capable for that ?
Thank you for taking the time to watch the channel, I really appreciate that 👍 I don't do recommendations or reviews. Everyone's experiences and environment will be so different from mine - I make videos about the the things that I do, in the places that I go, with the gear that I have. What I would say is that the 3F floating cloud is probably not best suited to crazy wind, storms and snow 😊👍🐶
Fantastic content, never seen this before thanks for doing it. You should be really chuffed with yourself . Did I see in a previous video you put extra lines in as well on windy conditions?
Hi Stuart thank you 😊 I carry a couple of lightweight guys to 'double guy' just the windward side - belt and braces in a big blow and you can sleep well 👍😊🐶
Another fascinating and interesting video Shamus. I carry the delta pegs as well as the standard supplied DAC tent pegs with my Soulo if the forecast suggest strong winds but have been trying to get some Big Sky International Tube Stakes for a while now here in UK to reduce pack volume....unfortunately even Big Sky's website in the USA don't appear to have them.
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 Thanks for the info Shamus. You are correct Easton do a 6" and 9" peg - just ordered some 9" pegs from Valley and Peak. Now just got to hope we are all allowed out to play again on Dartmoor after December 3rd.
Hi Shamus, I do love your adventures with Petra to some fantastic spots on Dartmoor, however, It would be fantastic if you gave the co-ordinates to the areas you visit. I know a few places in the area but have not as yet visited it all. Keep up the brilliant work.
Great video, really useful. The backing up pegs feature was handy, I''ll try that. Out of interest, how many extra pegs do you usually carry (say for example if your tent had 10 anchor/pegging out points)? Interested to know as I take about half as much extra and not all the same type. Just in case I need to replace a broken peg or add extra guy out points.
I use a bit of a mix of pegs; Vargo titanium shepherd hooks, some Alpkit V pegs but mostly I use Y pegs, I think from Camcleats. I have some Hilleberg Y pegs as well that came with the Soulo. Having a mix of pegs means I can usually get something in the ground and I’ve been lucky I’ve not had any snapped guy-lines, just the odd slightly bent peg. I have the Delta pegs but really only use them on a big family tent as they are a bit bulky. One thing I did with the shepherd hooks was put some red heat shrink tubing on the hook end so I could find them!
Exactly 👍 My Akto has about 4 different peg types in the bag - a tunnel tent is absolutely reliant on pegs, so I don't want to find that I can't get one solidly in the ground. I thought Delta pegs were meant for family tents too - but lots of people keep recommending them? 😊🐶
Nice video, thank you for the advice and guidence. Perhaps you could (if you haven't already) do a video on cheaper Amazon products and see how they hold up to the branded items....
@@outdoorsinspiration9284, I’ve never done it but i will start carrying four additional stakes and make some loops for back staking on the wind side during those windy days.
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 Look theres clearly a seriously high demand for these pants! forget your day job and embrace this new line of work selling pants.....
another request for trying out the delta pegs aswell!! would be great to get a real world opinion to see if the "legends" about it are true........sorry
One day 👍 for now though, I’m happy with what I do, with the stuff that I’ve got, in the places that I go. Mind you it would be good to do a test agains double pegged guys - 👍😊😂
Back staking also works well with large tents, so agreed. But I am very surprised you have not used Delta Pegs? The science behind them is simple but fantastically effective. Bit of an awkward shape to carry in a backpack but recently found someone who makes triangular... made to measure bags from Hilleberg Kerlon material, very good quality.
Yes, I will give them a spin one day I promise 👍 To be honest carrying three tube stakes weighs 33g and they sit nicely with my other pegs and as you can see, back staking is very effective 😊🐶
@@leonbaradino4554 Call it innovation? Engineering? whatever pleases, but they withstand forces of up to 72kg. That's a very strong (standalone) peg! Not for stony ground of course
I’ve just subscribed for your sense of humour, not watched the rest of the video. Similar ages with the same historical diet of Monty Python, Life of Brian, Carry On et al. 😀🥸👍 Having watched the rest of the video, got to say, good material, well explained and informative, I’ve been wanting to upgrade my pegs for a while now, but want sure which to go for.
Thank you Mat 😊 I really appreciate that. There are myriad pegs to choose from aren't there, I usually carry what the tent was supplied with and 2 or 3 more of a different shape and size for the 'just in case' moments 👍🐶😊
Great stuff, really enjoy and learn from your channel. General question. I’ve noticed in one vid that you waded a river. Do you not worry about wet feet? I try my hardest to keep mine dry. Gorgex lined boots. Seal skins and gators sometimes. Anyway keep it up Petra keep him out of trouble.
Hi Adam, thank you 😊 As long as my feet can stay dry, I keep them dry. Sometimes I just accept that, due to circumstances, they’ll get wet. It doesn’t bother me very much to be honest, unless it’s very cold 👍😊🐶
Well it's outdoors inspiration and you inspired me to make a video like this but with extra terrains. Have a look see Shamus and tell me what you think!
Crikey! It's a good job you had boots on. I think it's a total of 4 guy lines they've wrecked for me now - I tend to use a more rounded profile peg for guy likes now 😊👍🐶
one disadvantage with the MSR Groundhog style Ys - they will really hurt your foot if you tread on them. One went right through the bottom of a kid’s beach shoe.
where are the affiliate links to these pants? and can I get them in italian merino wool? Great videos as always, your real world tests and knowledge is what got me suscribed
Alas, yes thats the one, Dean 😂 Sorry, buddy - I swapped them out for some relatively cheap Y pegs for the Hex ground anchors - for some reason, the stock ones are as soft as cheese 👍
Double pegging could save you in a storm. Never heard of it before. Excellent review. You just missed the kilo pull test on the single titanium V peg ‘the right way around’. That’s what I use. Best lesson on tent pegs by a mile. Thanks.
I have some abs plastic screw thread pegs that are brilliant in really soft peaty soil where nothing else grips- it’s a really deep thread, so offers a hell of a lot of resistance to coming out, you screw them in like a normal screw, so they keep the soil structure intact, without breaking it up. A lot of my camping is in woodland where normal pegs come out with no force at all, so these are indispensable, albeit, they are very chunky so take up more room than a bag of normal ones.
It's a guilty pleasure watching things like this. But by far the most balanced view, albeit that really you should have looked at 3-5 pegs of each design and taken an average. But since the lovely Petra was in the video I think I'll overlook that ; -). I think I'll be packing a few extra pegs with my Soulo should the wind look to warrant it. On that topic, in your experience is there really any value in using all 12 guys with the Soulo when two guys are going to one peg? I've only had my Soulo out one and it was calm, but my thought was to go down to six plus two guys, placing the two 'extra' guys on the windward side with their own pegs. As per others, the double pegging idea is new to me too, but a simple but effective solution.
Thank you, it's an interesting point about the guys, I suppose it helps distribute the forces the tent structure - but I hadn't given it thought until now 👍
I tried out the double peg idea last night during Storm Bella. I didn't doubt it's value, but I now know it's value in practice too. It was a wild night on soggy, stoney ground but my double pegged guys didn't shift a millimeter 😁
Very interesting Shamus, I had seen you back stake before in one of your videos and was impressed as I’d never considered doing it previously. Do you find length of guy lines has any bearing on their effectiveness in severe weather? Is long most effective or short better? Is there any optimum length in your experience?
Thank you 😊 I think longer brings greater stability to be honest. Too close to the tent and it's not supporting the structure, it's just holding it down on the ground. There will be an optimum length and that's where you have to use judgement to see how much stability it is realistically adding 👍😊🐶
increíble, tan solo un poco de prueba y resultados magníficos. me encataria poder tener subtítulo en español si fuera posible eh aprendido mucho con solo la ilustracion. desde Argentina un abrazo Maestro
Terrific clear vid Shamus. Bit concerned that you lost one guy in 50mph winds, and almost another. Were they chafed already or was it all down to one night’s storm wear do you think?
Hi Peter - The tent was a Hilleberg - brand new, first time up, after about 1 hour in 50mph wind. The guy lines are superb quality, but Y pegs can be abrasive. It has happened twice before, each time using Y pegs 😊👍🐶
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 my two months old Allak2 came from Hilleberg with V pegs with a rounded back. But the notched top that catches the guy could chafe I suppose?
All the pegs that bent took a higher load. I’d rather keep my tent in high winds than keep my pegs straight! Double pegging is awesome, reminds me of old school Royal Engineers stuff.
I wish I could 😊 It's the same method I used to form ground anchors as a rope rescue specialist - we put people over cliffs with this method - albeit the stakes are 4 feet long and an inch and half in diameter 👍
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 Interesting.... static cliff rescue in NZ on grassy top cliffs uses waratah fence stakes - which are made from BHP steel and have y section.... they were meshed in a ground mosaic to generate the ground anchor....

Everyone's experiences and environment will be so different from mine - I make videos about the the things that I do, in the places that I go, with the gear that I have. What I would say is that the 3F floating cloud is probably not best suited to crazy wind, storms and snow 😊👍🐶
Excellent video learned a lot , cheers
Thanks Ash 😊 Those Big Sky International Tubes do go in and out of stock quite a bit, I think Easton do a similar product, but I may be wrong 😊👍🐶
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 Thanks for the info Shamus. You are correct Easton do a 6" and 9" peg - just ordered some 9" pegs from Valley and Peak. Now just got to hope we are all allowed out to play again on Dartmoor after December 3rd.
@@ashbrooks2857 - That's great news on the pegs - I'm hopeful for the wild camping 😊👍🐶
Hi Shamus, I do love your adventures with Petra to some fantastic spots on Dartmoor, however, It would be fantastic if you gave the co-ordinates to the areas you visit. I know a few places in the area but have not as yet visited it all. Keep up the brilliant work.
Thank you Don 👍😊🐶
I use the MSR ground hogs. Their light and I’ve never had any issues with them.
Hi Perry, they are a a much respected stake 😊👍🐶 Thanks for watching again 😊
@@outdoorsinspiration9284, I’ve never done it but i will start carrying four additional stakes and make some loops for back staking on the wind side during those windy days.
@@Wondering_Fireball - It's always worthwhile having that in your back pocket, so to speak 👍😊🐶
If you like the Groundhogs, have a look at the MSR Cyclone - they're Groundhogs on steroids... Lots of steroids...
Are those Mario pants Merino?😂 I’d pay for this content, after 35 years outdoors I’m both validating my knowledge and learning new tricks.
Thank you David 😊 Merino Mario Underpants - That would be a great 'What Three Words Location' 😂 Thank you for watching 👍🐶
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 Look theres clearly a seriously high demand for these pants! forget your day job and embrace this new line of work selling pants.....
another request for trying out the delta pegs aswell!! would be great to get a real world opinion to see if the "legends" about it are true........sorry
I can do socks as well 😂
One day 👍 for now though, I’m happy with what I do, with the stuff that I’ve got, in the places that I go.
Very unscientific.
Very interesting.
Going to upgrade my back staking combo. Enjoying the content.
Having watched the rest of the video, got to say, good material, well explained and informative, I’ve been wanting to upgrade my pegs for a while now, but want sure which to go for.
I had a Y peg ruin a very expensive pair of boots as it sliced through the side as I walked passed one.
😂😂😂 Merino, good call - less 'whiffy' 👍 Thank you 😊
I personally use MSR groundhogs and have got Alpkits version of them too.
Hi Jody, I think I have some appkit ones somewhere - The silver ones I have were GoLite Y pegs and are a tough as anything 😊👍🐶
Another great video shamus
Unfortunately that looked like a bent hex peak peg to me 🤣
New pegs on the Christmas's list 👍
Alas, yes thats the one, Dean 😂 Sorry, buddy - I swapped them out for some relatively cheap Y pegs for the Hex ground anchors - for some reason, the stock ones are as soft as cheese 👍
Great advice on pegs.
Double pegging could save you in a storm. Never heard of it before. Excellent review. You just missed the kilo pull test on the single titanium V peg ‘the right way around’. That’s what I use. Best lesson on tent pegs by a mile. Thanks.
Thanks Ivor 😊 There were so many permutations that I could have tried, but I had to draw the line as it took me 2 days to edit 😂
Great information.
Thank you Marina 😊👍🐶
I have some abs plastic screw thread pegs that are brilliant in really soft peaty soil where nothing else grips- it’s a really deep thread, so offers a hell of a lot of resistance to coming out, you screw them in like a normal screw, so they keep the soil structure intact, without breaking it up. A lot of my camping is in woodland where normal pegs come out with no force at all, so these are indispensable, albeit, they are very chunky so take up more room than a bag of normal ones.
Interesting, a friend of mine used to swear by something called 'swizzle pegs' - I can't find a reference to them but a very similar concept 👍
@@thewestonfront - Fantastic 👍👍👍
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 wow, pretty quick then, and the Hilleberg cordage is good too. Maybe I’ll stick with my Vs which seem less abrasive.
@@petergilbert72 - Ive replaced the Y pegs on the guys for my Anjan 2 with older Hilleberg V pegs which have a nice rounded edge to them 😊👍
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 my two months old Allak2 came from Hilleberg with V pegs with a rounded back. But the notched top that catches the guy could chafe I suppose?
@@petergilbert72 - I've not had a problem with those, they are DAC - the same as many MSR pegs 👍

Hi Anthony 😊 thank you 😊👍🐶
🤣🤣🤣👍😉love it great vid 👍
Hehe 😂 Thanks Wayne 😊👍🐶
All the pegs that bent took a higher load. I’d rather keep my tent in high winds than keep my pegs straight! Double pegging is awesome, reminds me of old school Royal Engineers stuff.
Except the Big Sky International tube stake - that took 35kg and didn't bend 😊 and took 35kg. But yes the others bent because they held so well 👍
Thanks very informative
Thank you 😊🐶👍
evening shamus and petra .
Hi Danny 😊 and woof from Petra 🐶👍
I wonder if you could patent your back staking method - so innovative yet common sense, but only an expert outdoorsman such as yourself.
@@markusmilne8566 - Thank you 👍 We did some experimentation, thinking we might change, but found what we had was great at what it did - and could be locally made by any blacksmith. Off the shelf fence posts sound great though 😊👍🐶
