Another clear helpful video. I find a merino buff extremely useful in winter. It's cosy around my neck while I warm up but light and easy to stuff in my pocket if I get too warm. Just come across this video through a suggested list, I have to say it’s the best video I’ve seen on explaining layering systems. I’ve been doing outdoors for years and work to the exact same principle but using this for others to learn is brilliant. Love it well done!!!

I used to spend a lot of time on Dartmoor, in fact it’s where I cut my navigation teeth. Miss it very much, so it’s lovely to watch your videos and see the places I used to know so we’ll.
Big thumbs up, great video on the layering system. I always feel alittle pressured to buying the dearest and best gear but your right it's not all about the cost. As a landscape photographer I struggle sometimes finding the right clothing for the situation.
Thank you Karl 😊 It's a much underestimated activity, you have to carry quite a bit of kit in with you, so you are exerting quite a bit of energy, and then suddenly having to switch to a sedentary activity while you watch, adjust and wait - layering is so important for you, isn't it 👍
I watched a documentary of why a woman died, ended up frozen to death on a winter snow covered mountain in New Zealand. One of the contributing factors was that she was wearing top and bottom base layers with 100% cotton. The expert findings was that the base layers once wet with moisture, draw away her body heat. Cotton is most def a no no, in such extreme conditions! As for midlayers, a top mountaineer explained that he goes high end with base layers, soft outer shells, and hard shells; other than that he uses cheap insulating mid layers that just do the job of making himself comfortable. The odd time I look on Ebay for those high end products at a 1/2 to 1/3 price from those guys who used it once or twice and gave up! Love a good deal!
From a Canadian point of view your information is very accurate in presentation in regards to effectiveness and cost. My only other preference is the addition of a hood to protect you from the wind. Turning your back to the wind with the hood up gives your face a chance to warm up when temperatures are extreme. I personally prefer some wool as a comfort factor as well as it’s ability to insulate even when wet. When you have no other options you just adjust layers as required. Bring one extra layer than you think is required because it does you no good hanging in you closet. Before you start your expedition start with a good meal to provide fuel for the stove in your body. Your body cannot burn what it does not have plus it is easier to carry by consuming rather than carry. Then you focus on enjoying the day.
Excellent video- as starting to think about sensible kit was very useful and I appear to be going alone the correct lines! Thank you - still not sure about layers at night time
I've definitely picked up on my error. The base layer, it is rough on my nipples 😳 so I put a t-shirt under it.🙄. So I have a fitted t-shirt, base layer. Down jacket, gillet and outer jacket. I'll have to rethink that. Missing that Rab instead of the t-shirt but in the right order. The trousers. I'm new to this so I bought baselayer for under the trousers. Or as my wife calls it, tights without feet!!! But the interesting and important thing you did say was sizing. I bought large for everything. I think I need to visit 'GoOutdoors' with the layers on and try stuff on. Really appreciate this. Seen your bio. Incidentally years ago I worked at RCC Pitreavie Castle where all rescues from 52:30N and above were coordinated. We worked closely with the MRTs as well. Great guys. Much respect to you. I suspect that you worked a lot with our counterparts in the Southern Region at Plymouth before it was disbanded and handed over to civilian RCC. Worked at Pitreavie from 79-84. The good old days, pull up a sandbag.
Hi Shamus, another great video of yours. Like you I am a paramo lover and I think it would have been great to include that brand in your layering video. Of course it is not about the brand itself but more about its technology/design which as you for well, reduced the need for layering. I am a pro photographer (and fellow youtuber) based in Scotland and it took me over 10 years to find my perfect system with the Halcon jacket and dbh long sleeve neck zipped 200 merino base layer. The velcro system of the jacket lets me ventilate when in motion and the whole system shelters me from the scottish wind. I do have Rab Alpine light down jacket that I use in combination when in stationary for a while to retain heat. That is my long testimony. Any keep up the good work and if you ever come up to Scotland, I’d love to meet you.
Excellent video and way of getting across very useful information. I especially liked the, up hill hat off, once on top hat on !! As an excellent way to regulate heat. My hat comes off and on, so does a buff but I will make more of a point to check and be more precise. Also the LHG (Long Haired General) needs to take note of this one but who am I to remind her !!!! 🤣

Good advise Shamus. Up here in West Yorkshire your waterproofs spend less time in your rucksack😮. I’ve found wearing running leggings under breathable waterproof pants is comfortable, they are good at carrying moisture away on climbs and stay put. I agree with the comment on getting walking pants with side vents for dry weather . Keep em coming👍👍
Thank you, Dave... 😊 I don't want to give the impression it's dry here... Dartmoor has the highest rainfall in the county... But when it's forecast, most people stay at home 👍🐶😊
I love the way that you talk sense. There is so much crap spoken about kit but the essence is that you get what works for you. I always emphasise when I am training that should get the best kit that you can afford. So many times I see DofE parents buying stuff that their children don’t need. If you are only going to use it the once get the stuff from the DofE kit list. If you are going to do this bad a hobby get the best stuff for you. When I started out, and to be honest for a long time I became a gear whore. But over the years I have discovered that I go back to the same kit every time. Keep up the good work.
Absolutely, Ian 👍 Although I may use 'nice' gear, I use what I think will suite me. The outdoor market has a strong 'fashion drive' and unfortunately that never stands still 😊🐶
Thank you for your clever insight. I’ve been resisting the purchase of technical tops, pretty sure it isn’t my best look, lol! But we went for a walk the other day, and the weather changed into a pretty blowy rain storm. We quickly realised my ordinary thick clothes weren’t up to the job, so we sat in the car and watched your video over a flask of coffee. Convinced, husband marched me off to a retail store! i’m now the proud owner of a long sleeved base, mid layer, rain coat, hat, gloves and boots. ( how lucky am I? ) I’ve worn them twice already, first for a cycle, then yesterday for a walk, what a difference it makes, thank you for giving us the nudge, there’s nothing stopping us enjoying a good walk now. P.S I love my old cheap water proof trousers too 😁👍
Thanks Shamus really appreciate this video as you might of seen because I'm trying to catch up with your videos I've just been watching the camping video's but this had a bit of interest from me because I'm useless at knowing all the classes layers and I sweat more than most. I love the way you explained this and normally I do wear a cotton t shirt although I'm slowly changing that and with that I wear a cheap mountain warehouse thin flees thing and that normally does me until it gets very cold😁👍
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 fjallraven, Patagonia, Rab, Mountain Equipment, Montane, Berghuas, Rohan , worked well for me .. I mostly enjoy wearing fjallraven. ..
Great video again Shamus, i too use a modular system for insulation & it works a treat (up to now). Thanks for all your insight and experience. It's the old saying - you get what you pay for (in most cases), it can be expensive but living next to the Montane factory shop has certainly helped reduce the cost haha
Another informative, clear and concise video. Picked up some good tips, firstly for me to ditch my cotton t-shirts when out walking ! 🤦♂️🙈 hasn’t thought about the gilet!
Buffs - neck warmers, head warmers, hand warmers, emergency nose wipes, can’t imagine now not having one with me. Original buffs, summer buffs, merino buffs, winter buffs (lovely for skiing). ❤️
Interestingly I've found airspace osprey range of rucksacks keep my back cold due to the sweat where by my mariposa snug on my back with no real gap conversely keeps me warm. Not ideal in summer but in winter my go to pack for that reason.
Lucky Prince Andrew......... not needing a base layer. Add a 'w' to 'layer ' is probably what he needs more. Another great video Shamus. I use the Montane Terra Trousers also. Amazing what difference the air vents in the side can make. Also handy to loosen them off when walking up steep hills. Just gives that bit more movement in the leg/knee area. Another great video Shamus, always look forward to your videos.
Shamus, firstly hope all is well with you and yours? Recently saw one of your videos and have watched a good few more. In my opinion they are professional, informative and much appreciated. I would like to start taking my 16 month old ‘F S’ a bit further afield with his walks and possibly look at the camping side also. May I ask what type of boots you use? I appreciate your comments on all the other clothing, much appreciated, Regards David.
Hello David, thank you. I have numerous boots to be honest. It really is down to the shape of an individual’s foot. Scarpa Trek GTX have a narrow heel cup that fits my foot very well. 😊👍🐶
Only really discovered the benefits of body warmers/gillets a few years ago, i run very hot when moving but I'm cold when stopped, so for me body warmers are great Fantastic videos again Shamus keep up the great work......onwards and upwards 👍
Good video, happy to know I'm doing it right to a certain extent.. Wish I had taken into account I would need oversized waterproof for winter for when I have down jacket and fleece on. 👍🙏
Exactly the system I use on the school run, often look very uncool but I’m cozy and dry so winning. I have to tell myself to put on gloves though, I never find them very comfortable so don’t tend to bother with them but always regret it when my hands start hurting.
We're new to this stuff so, since April we have been collecting layers (costly for 2 when you like Rab) We have put them to the test a lot and they work very well! I have hyperhidrosis so, a sweatband is also a must have! We've found that we need a smaller rain shell for summer and a larger one now, to go over the layers! I found you this morning and i have liked and subscribed! Great content and i love Petra!
Really informative.its made think about what I'm wearing when I'm out working (landscaping) I'm thinking about getting another Wax jacket I'd like to get some gortex waterproof trousers but I know they'll rip to easily.i shall now look at a base layer.thanks seamus...or is it diagress.lol big hugs to Petra.steve
Thank you Steve. You'll wreck GoreTex landscaping, get cheap over trousers - Breathable membranes like GoreTex need to be kept clean. to be effective 👍
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 just a quick question base layer tops are they the same as the MMA tops.called rash guard s. they're like quite tight and seem to wick moisture away?
Hi Shamus. Another simply explained subject. Well done. I made the mistake you discussed about buying a 'Michelin Man' style garment almost 20 years when I spent a small fortune on a beautiful Gore Dryloft jacket that you can wear down to about -20c. It's beautiful but absolutely useless in the UK as you spend the whole time sweating your pants off! So, as you said better to buy several different layers of even the cheaper brands to wear in changing conditions than go out spend a fortune on one lovely big expensive jacket. Great top tips as always and I'm sure HRH will enjoy the personal mention? Until next time. ATVB Graham
Hi Shamus, love the videos and of course Petra. Do you have any thoughts on the Pile shirt, next to the skin alternative to the layering system. I've read some articles by climber Andy Kirkpatrick which are very interesting. I did buy a Snugpak pile shirt, it is very breathable but was a touch warm ( I think I do run a bit hot). Andy also talked about having a good base that keeps you warm when wet, with a breathable windproof on top. I would love to hear your thoughts. Cheers, Chris
Hello Chris 😊 a lot of people swear but that method, Buffalo etc. I tried it and found I just couldn't regulate heat very well and found it uncomfortable - except with very cold climates where I would wear a buffalo as a mid layer while working hard and then a down jacket over the top for further insulation when stopped. But that's me, I'm not an expert, I only know what works for me. I often forego the mid layer when wearing Paramo, that isn't technically speaking waterproof (it has no hydrostatic head) but it's relatively warm and paradoxically is actually waterproof 😊👍🐶
Thanks for your reply. Yes, I found it too warm. I do like the simplicity of it, but to be honest, I'm happy in a base, hat, headover & glovers most of the time. Cheers for now
Hello Graham, I assume you mean the one in the. vestibule? It's one I made myself from an old footprint from another tent. it covers the vestibule and is elasticated out to the pegs - I made it for my Akto, but it fits the Soulo as well 👍

P.S I love my old cheap water proof trousers too 😁👍
Fantastic 😊 I am pretty sure that gear will serve you well. Enjoy the weekend, it’s very wet and wind here 🐶 Stay safe 👍
Fantastic video's .... very well presented, great content, some of the best on RUclips ! SUBSCRIBED
Thank you 😊 That is very much appreciated 😊👍🐶
Thanks Shamus really appreciate this video as you might of seen because I'm trying to catch up with your videos I've just been watching the camping video's but this had a bit of interest from me because I'm useless at knowing all the classes layers and I sweat more than most. I love the way you explained this and normally I do wear a cotton t shirt although I'm slowly changing that and with that I wear a cheap mountain warehouse thin flees thing and that normally does me until it gets very cold😁👍
Thank you
Enjoyed watching your video
Great knowledge learned
After being a keen outdoorsman I mostly wear fjallraven head to toe ..
The best ..
I've always liked the Fjallraven brand, but oddly enough don't wear it. It has a very good reputation 👍😊🐶
Thank you 😊 I would be camped outside the shop 😂 Fantastic 👍
Another informative, clear and concise video. Picked up some good tips, firstly for me to ditch my cotton t-shirts when out walking ! 🤦♂️🙈 hasn’t thought about the gilet!
Hi Michael, I carry the gilet because it's also a lighter 👍😊🐶
Buffs - neck warmers, head warmers, hand warmers, emergency nose wipes, can’t imagine now not having one with me. Original buffs, summer buffs, merino buffs, winter buffs (lovely for skiing). ❤️
They did exist before 'Buff' of course 👍 'head over' was the term... and cap-comforter 😊
Interestingly I've found airspace osprey range of rucksacks keep my back cold due to the sweat where by my mariposa snug on my back with no real gap conversely keeps me warm. Not ideal in summer but in winter my go to pack for that reason.
That is interesting, Peter 😊 I never really gave it much though, but of course many rucksacks have 'air' backs and 'vent channels' don't they.👍
Lucky Prince Andrew......... not needing a base layer.
Hi Brad and thank you 😊👍🐶
I’m so pleased I came across this channel, you have definitely earned a subscriber 👍
Thank you Clare 😊 I appreciate that 😊👍🐶
Really useful content. Thanks for taking the time to make and share such well made and informative videos. ATB John.
Thank you, John, it was a pleasure to out the video together 👍😊🐶
"Our body's way of regulating heat, generally, is to sweat.....unless of course, you're Prince Andrew". 🤭🤴🥵
Well.... the man said it on TV 😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
Boom tingz! Top notch content as always.
Thank you very much 😊👍🐶
Good video mate!
Thank you Scott😊👍🐶
😊👍🐶
Thanks Shamus, I will definitely have a look at them, much appreciated 👍
Only really discovered the benefits of body warmers/gillets a few years ago, i run very hot when moving but I'm cold when stopped, so for me body warmers are great
Fantastic videos again Shamus keep up the great work......onwards and upwards 👍
Thank you Andy. Yup 👍 Body warmer is what I call it to... When did it become a gilet? 😂
Good video, happy to know I'm doing it right to a certain extent.. Wish I had taken into account I would need oversized waterproof for winter for when I have down jacket and fleece on. 👍🙏
Thank you, it's a common problem, because we try on jackets in a T shirt don't we 😊🐶👍
Really like your approach, and you kept my interest throughout. Great stuff (and I was in Wistman's Wood myself a couple of weeks ago; lovely place!)
Hi Dave, and thank you for commenting 😊 - It's a beautiful place isn't it 👍
Exactly the system I use on the school run, often look very uncool but I’m cozy and dry so winning. I have to tell myself to put on gloves though, I never find them very comfortable so don’t tend to bother with them but always regret it when my hands start hurting.
Yes I certainly don't like gloves, but soon feel it if I don't wear them in the cold 😊👍🐶
Just the video I was looking for 😁 keep it up mate, love em all!
Nice one Greg 👍 Thank you 😊
We're new to this stuff so, since April we have been collecting layers (costly for 2 when you like Rab) We have put them to the test a lot and they work very well!
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 I'll stick with cheap and cheerful but maybe I'll get some quick dry trousers
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 just a quick question base layer tops are they the same as the MMA tops.called rash guard s. they're like quite tight and seem to wick moisture away?
@@stevegrover7852 - I've never heard of that Steve ?
@@outdoorsinspiration9284 I'll send you a link on Twitter
ATVB Graham
Hi Graham - a good jacket for the pub then 👍😂😊
Hi Shamus, love the videos and of course Petra.
Cheers for now
Background looks like a screen saver!
Great video bro!
Thank you Alex 👍😊🐶
Great work, subbed
Ow do 😊 thank you 👍😊
Hi Shamus I forgot to ask you when you go camping what is the light weight ground sheet you use ? Thanks Graham
Hello Graham, I assume you mean the one in the. vestibule? It's one I made myself from an old footprint from another tent. it covers the vestibule and is elasticated out to the pegs - I made it for my Akto, but it fits the Soulo as well 👍
Outdoors Inspiration Thanks Shamas 👍
Hahah Prince Andrew! Great info as always mate!
Thank you 😊 Well, he said it 😂
