  • VICTIM TO VERDICT: 'Christmas Parade Rampage' - WI v. Darrell Brooks | When #DarrellBrooks drove his red SUV through the Waukesha Christmas Parade he killed six people and injured more than sixty others. But that wasn't all. He would take that chaos he created at the parade into the Wisconsin courtroom of Judge Jennifer Dorow in one of the most bizarre trials in American judicial history.

He said himself that he didn’t believe he hit “that many people”. Hitting one was too much. He tried everything possible to obstruct the process of the court. His behavior was atrocious. His tactics of intimidation of the judge and witnesses were irredeemable. I’m glad the woman who spoke during impact statements told him to stop rolling his eyes, etc. That she had been watching him on TV acting out and how disgusted she was. No one was in judge Dorow’s shoes. Despite what people criticized her for being too lenient, in time we were not there. She was up against a pure evil opponent. I know she prayed to God for patience and wisdom in handling Mr Brooks. She did an outstanding job making sure DB received a fair trial where there wouldn’t be enough evidence in appeal for a mistrial. If she had to go overboard in dealing with Brooks, then she did what she thought was right. TGBTG!

His statement of not thinking he hit that many people was just one more lie. An habitual liar, manipulator, predator, etc.
Yes, Judge Dorow went out of her way to accommodate DB throughout the trial. At sentencing the heavy gavel was coming down and she was through with his yelling and ridiculous objections. I honestly believe he did not know how to spell 'pledge.' Happy Thanksgiving. @@cynthiatucker2147

I agree with everything you just said. This man is a monster and his anger got the best of him because number one, he had a woman who is much more powerful than him that he had to answer to and number two, his anger and frustration were palpable. He had no idea what he was doing and the prosecution obviously did. Each time the prosecution did something he didn’t understand, he’d get angry and call “unfair.”
It wasn’t unfair. It was the prosecution knowing what they could do, legally. His ignorance of the law is what ticked him off so much!

@@matt_canonDarrell Brooks' mother spoiled him to the point of entitlement and believing that he could do no wrong. He also had an extremely short temper that was frequently on display towards his ex-girlfriend Erika Patterson whenever he would viciously beat her. During the initial investigation into the Waukesha Christmas Parade attack; there were claims that Brooks had mental health issues, but he was evaluated four times by two separate teams of clinical psychiatrists and psychologists during his incarceration at the Waukesha County Jail awaiting trial; two for the defense and two for the Prosecution. After their evaluations; they came to the same information: Darrell Brooks had no history of mental health issues and had never been diagnosed with any mental illness that could hinder his ability to know right from wrong. In layman's terms; Brooks was not insane and fully aware his actions were wrong, but he simply didn't care about the consequences.

His mother called him a "caged bird". Here's my answer in verse dedicated to our true crime community.
I know why the caged chicken sings
    A free chicken clucks
    right outside the hen pen
    and nibbles
    those corn seeds
    thinkin' they'll never end
    But the caged one
    lives in unending fear
    of the inmate next door
    who his life will tear
Once that green soap is dropped
and the lights have gone down
    "Objection" he cries
    before hitting the ground(z).
    The caged chicken sings
    with a fearful trill
    of those things unknown
    that baffle him still
    like relevancY, hearsay
    and everything law
    and taKit agreements
    remorse, honor and awe.
This narcissist's standing on the grave of our dreams
    we've all seen the havoc
    we've all heard the screams
    yet he's playing games
    and gives people looks
    he opens his throat
    to croak "Not Darrell Brooks"
    And his tune is heard
    on the distant hill
    for this caged chicken
    is a monster.
    His mother is sobbing
    but no tears of remorse
    she should have thought better
    'fore his acts she'd endorse.
    This poem is ending
    enough has been said
    forget him, I tell you
    to our world he's dead.

And the way the male prosecutor shredded him and said Darrell brooks is a registered sex offender. Darrell brooks interrupted him because he didn’t want anybody to know that he was a registered sex offender and the prosecutor said I’m not done yet and Erica Patterson was let off the stand to never be seen again by Darrell brooks I have to believe that he only had her testify to one to say look at me I do what I want I argue with the judge, and since the last time you seen and talk to me, I became an attorney and two I think it was a chance for him to get to see her because I truly believe she did not contact him or write to him, and he wanted to see her because he told her happy birthday, and then became the Darrell brooks that we all knew

I know that Judge Dorow got a lot of flack for the number of things Brooks got away with, and a lot of people put it down to her former defense work.
I think that she had a nearly impossible task: a clear psychopath who was psychologically capable of conducting his defense who was clearly doing anything that he could to delay the inevitable. She had to do what she could, within her authority as judge, to get the trial to its completion.

Not only that but the judicial situation really tied her hands on what remedies should could use to counter his actions:
      1) Criminal Contempt - What would 30 more days be to someone who is facing and got 6 Life sentences plus 700 years in prison and was in custody already. He would have continued knowing that the sentence was meaningless.
      2) Civil Contempt - This is what Brooks actually wanted because he knew if he could get this, he could delay the trial indefinitely. Judge Dorow knew it too. Again, he was in custody to he would have simply refused to behave.
      3) Bind and Gag - I kinda wish she would have done this during her sentencing remarks but in a way, it is probably good that she did not. During the trial, it would only have lead to a mistrial or an overturn because how could Brooks represent himself if he was bound and gagged.
      4) Removal - A full removal would have again delayed the trial and rewarded Brooks. However, the Waukesha County Courthouse is brand new (I think it opened only 3 - 4 months prior to trial) and thus had state of the art technology. This allowed the judge to remove Brooks to another courtroom where should could mute him but at the same time, he could participate in his defense and represent himself. This was the best option she had to keep the trial moving and she used it.
Now, as to Illinois vs Allen, the key words Brooks missed was "at least" when they mention the possibility judges have to remove contemptuous defendants such as Brooks. SCOTUS also said that no one solution would be the right one for all trials as each one is different. The SCOTUS justices were wise to give judges wide latitude in dealing with defendants like Brooks and I doubt he will win an appeal on being removed. In fact, if the courts allow arguments, it might be only to update Illinois v. Allen so that it covers modern courtrooms.
Judge Dorow had a bad poker hand in this situation and yet she played to the best of her ability to win the pot at the end anyways.

There's just not enough that can be said about Judge Dorow. She dotted every single i and crossed every single t to make sure all bases were covered. Her grace and dedication was exactly what was needed in dealing with this fool.
I would give anything to know what his day to day life is like now. I wonder if he thinks about when he's alone in his cell.

It is so incredibly tragic, not only for what he did, but that we as a community, as a nation, will show more guilt and more sorrow for HIS actions than HE ever will. Prayers for the victims of this tragedy, prayers for their loved ones, and God rest the souls of those who were taken from us on that day. May all afflicted, by the pain and suffering this man caused, find peace and hope this upcoming Christmas.

That is the Judge’s courtroom. It’s not on you’re time when you want it’s when the judge wants when the judge wants. I’d never think about going in a courtroom as a defendant or not and even think about acting the was DARREL BROOKS did. The disrespect for the court and victims says a lot about what Erica Patterson went through.

it probably felt disgusting for everyone in that courtroom to have to listen to DB show such utter contempt for literally everyone: contempt for the judge, prosecution, witnesses, the jury, and most importantly, the victims and their families. Then if that weren't enough, listening to his mom argue mental illness and to portray DB as a "victim." Then listening to his grandmother tell the victim's families how they should feel. I can only imagine the silent teeth-gnashing as everyone fought the urge to personally throttle him.
