From the description: "Hiatus Kaiyote performing unreleased track 'Shaolin Monk Motherfunk' during sound-check at The Workers Club, in Fitzroy, Melbourne."
I have been into this band for about two weeks. And I don't remember ever being so obsessed with a band quite like this one. Rhythm section is mad tight, the dude on keys is something else, and Nai is a gem unlike any other in music right now. MUCH LOVE to this band.
people saying her guitar is so silent dont know about the fact that guitars sometimes are supposed to barely make a sound. they just give atmosphere and are the bade to the sound
Less is more, as a musician who's been moving further and further from guitar, tasteful playing speaks more volumes about the caliber of musician than endless flurries of notes
That's pretty much the life of a rhythm guitar player. If you're doing your job well, you blend in the background. Not every guitar part is meant to be heard prominently, however if you take away the rhythm guitar part, you'll notice it immediately.
that one backup singers voice complements hers so well. it gets me. i love all the crazy beat changes i could listen to this for a day straight and not even realise it had repeated 200 times.
i wish they had added the back vocals in the album version like it's done here. i think it meshes with her voice wonderfully but also gives like a deeper feel to the song.
i have 0 music background, so I said that just from what i could perceive. Not saying the one in the album isn't awesome, but this was a nice different feel.
I consider myself to be an old man, these young musicians are just great. I don't know what else to say. I've seen and heard everyone there is to hear, this group is great. Period.
Here we have the manifestation of what a steady diet of 60's and 70's soul / fusion will evoke. So as a self proclaimed 'Music purist', i can assure you that HK is Music at it's purist (far beyond eclectic) Q: can you dig it? A: dig it, I can!
I heard this album years ago, but this is my first time hearing this live version of this track. Something about the way she sang "to be strung to yours.. almighty dot to dot" is so awesome(1:35) I wish was in the official track!
My TV was on mute in the background to my laptop and I looked up n saw Nai Palm being interviewed and I Kinda liked her style so Up came the sound and OMFG. I can't believe I haven't heard their music before. Shame on me I'm an Aussie too. I can't quite put my finger on their style and that's OK because I believe REAL talent can't be pigeon holed.
So much love to you from California, USA for the tremendous blessings you all bring to this world. How beautiful to be on the other side of the planet yet so connected. You are a gift.
Awesome experience you guys gifted us here in Brooklyn, NY. Took some time to give you props for that show but damn you guys are good! It's been a while since I enjoyed a show like yours. Much love, long live Hiatus and hope to see you back in NYC.
Seriously you guys are so amazing... I don't mean to leave comments on damn near every song page you have, but I don't care, you guys need to know that you have fans in The States...
I'm hearing a lot of collaborations that could be actually done with this group. Like for instance Jill Scott or Erykah Badu or India Arie for instance. Or even just like a jazz session like D'Angelo Raphael Saadiq or even Questlove I'm hearing common all over this I'm here in I don't know man this is so deep right now people need to come up with collaboration so then that way we can see various artists on the same type platform trying to sleep but this music is this is touching a part of me I'm so happy that RUclips decided to recommend this for me so thank you very much have the best day everybody
this is the first song I stumbled upon when I found this band. this is neo jazz and every good part part of music sprinkled on a fat jazz cake that I want to fucking devour high or sober. the drummer is fucking sick, Nai is my favorite singer after Amy Winehouse, the pianist is on another classical/jazz level and the whole band is a super group. I die I can't wait till I can finally see them live
Chelsea Barragan I agree with you on all points EXCEPT for me it would be Nai second only to Erykah Badu. But it seems as though I should take some time to finally delve into Amy Winehouse...if I could turn this off...but I CANT!!!
And this was a fucking sound-check.... you've got to be kidding me.
no. are you serious. they are amazing.
illest soundcheck in recent memory! the engineer must've been groovin haaard
From the description: "Hiatus Kaiyote performing unreleased track 'Shaolin Monk Motherfunk' during sound-check at The Workers Club, in Fitzroy, Melbourne."
Discovering Hiatus Kaiyote was one of the best things that have ever happened to me , thank God 😪🙏🏾
Happy you made it home 😊😊
Just discovered this band, it was a real hiatus in my knowledge, listening all days to their albums and solo work by Nai Palm, great stuff
Arguably one of the most iconic songs ever made
Nai Palm improved the quality of my life dramatically and rebooted my soul . . .
I have been into this band for about two weeks. And I don't remember ever being so obsessed with a band quite like this one. Rhythm section is mad tight, the dude on keys is something else, and Nai is a gem unlike any other in music right now. MUCH LOVE to this band.
Jose Arevalo Right? I just saw them on Jimmy Kimmel the other night, and now I literally cannot stop listenin
+Miles McKinley they were on jimmy kimmel!!??? i heard about them from prince.
+Jose Arevalo (Revlo) I would sincerely agree with you!! Love this band to life!!! The freedom with music is unmatched
Thats about how I feel. Just bought Choose your weapon. Amazing
check out the footprint project! They remind me so much of those guys!! Or the other way round ;)
people saying her guitar is so silent dont know about the fact that guitars sometimes are supposed to barely make a sound. they just give atmosphere and are the bade to the sound
They're looking at this from a guitar virtuoso perspective or something, not really soaking in what the music actually is and is trying to convey.
Less is more, as a musician who's been moving further and further from guitar, tasteful playing speaks more volumes about the caliber of musician than endless flurries of notes
The guitar is capable of so much colour. Whether it’s blistering solos, ethereal textures or one note grooves... It’s all about context.
That's pretty much the life of a rhythm guitar player. If you're doing your job well, you blend in the background. Not every guitar part is meant to be heard prominently, however if you take away the rhythm guitar part, you'll notice it immediately.
for people who says her guitar is silent: get good headphones/speakers
It's 2021 and this still is awesome AF
2022 too 🙌🏼
2023 too!
2024 babee
Even in 2024❤❤❤❤!
Nai Palm & Esperanza officially raised the bar. No turning back🔥🔥🔥
Honestly, I think this is better than the album version.
Neel Surti i agree

Thank you Hiatus for bringing real music to the lives of everyone Down Under and all over the world. BIG love
I'm still not sick of this song. I bet I hear it at least once a day on my playlists.
Ive been clicking from video to video, they literally do not have a below standard song...real quality!
This blew my mind live. If any of you can see them in concert, DO IT.
I am a musical facist. These guys can be in my new world
that groove switchback at 2:19... whoo-ee

GIVE IT UP FOR THE DRUMMER FOR FUCKS SAKE. This band... wow
I never thought I liked drum solos until I saw them play live this summer. His name is Perrin Moss.
whoispham LOOOL yeah he does go hard on the drums though
Kenghis I'll never get it why so many people dislike drum solos
I could listen to her all day
Kara Hurley I do, all day every day
that one backup singers voice complements hers so well. it gets me. i love all the crazy beat changes i could listen to this for a day straight and not even realise it had repeated 200 times.
Whoa! Where has THIS song been all my life?!?!
Yes,thinking the same🤩😂
Im so late this song has kids in 2nd grade and I want to know the same thing.
Wow...my youngest daughter asked me to watch this video, and I'm glad she did. An amazing performance!
They are playing here in Minneapolis Minnesota this coming friday
i wish they had added the back vocals in the album version like it's done here. i think it meshes with her voice wonderfully but also gives like a deeper feel to the song.
Are you kidding me? The album version has, probably, the most amazing vocal blend.
Fucking awesome.
i have 0 music background, so I said that just from what i could perceive. Not saying the one in the album isn't awesome, but this was a nice different feel.
Why cant we get real music like this on the Radio? This is a great example of true musical artist. Get work!!!!!! keep it coming!
this is what should be playing on the radio and not the same 5-10 crappy songs over and over again. I wish you guys the best of luck.
I consider myself to be an old man, these young musicians are just great. I don't know what else to say. I've seen and heard everyone there is to hear, this group is great. Period.
I was on tiny desk and some one mention this group man i am.hooked.
KILLED IT!!! This is the perfect blend of electric, r&b, jazz, hip-hop, soul, and funk... forever a fan
Nai Palm is the truth!!!
Love from South Africa! Obsessed with the band 🥰
Here we have the manifestation of what a steady diet of 60's and 70's soul / fusion will evoke. So as a self proclaimed 'Music purist', i can assure you that HK is Music at it's purist (far beyond eclectic)
Q: can you dig it?
A: dig it, I can!
Sho nuff!
Oh my goodness, I LOVE this band, they're the mofo bomb; still rocking them in 2020 and 4ever!!
I heard this album years ago, but this is my first time hearing this live version of this track.
Something about the way she sang
"to be strung to yours.. almighty dot to dot" is so awesome(1:35)
I wish was in the official track!

One of my favorites from you guys. That part from 2:05-2:20 always reminded me of a Mr. Bungle tune.
That baseline in the intro along with the guitar riff. I really love the first minute of this song.
never had this much goosebumps from a song before.
This band has so much street grease on it. Love it!
Oh man, I hope this and Jekyll get released eventually. So good!!
2:18 was the last time I believed in my musical expectations. I've been a very happy skeptic ever since.
Gongasoso dude! You said what I felt and feel! I like to be challenged musically
