Hiatus Kaiyote: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Abby O'Neill | August 4, 2021
Melbourne alt-soul collective Hiatus Kaiyote tricked out its avant-garde recording studio, The Villa, and lathered it with props: a miniature desk, alien costumes, and loads of furry friends. Frontwoman Nai Palm shared with me the impetus behind the design. "I'm a treasure hunter at heart," she said, "and the beautiful thing about dressing a set with sentimental artifacts from my house is that I feel super comfy to perform." Every intricate detail of this Tiny Desk (home) concert evokes feelings of coziness, psychedelia and joyful performance art.
Launching into this brilliant performance with "Sip Into Something Soft," Hiatus takes us on a sweet and sultry journey through a host of selections from their new album, Mood Valiant. On "Rose Water," the tightness of the band (comprised of Paul Bender, Simon Mavin and Perrin Moss, and joined by their longtime backing vocalists) is on full display.
Hiatus Kaiyote came onto the scene with their debut album, Tawk Tomahawk, back in 2012 and created a groundswell of buzz among global music heads. Since then, they've gone on to win varying international awards and were the first Australian group to get nominated in the R&B category at the Grammys for best R&B performance in 2013. This uber-fun and exhilarating set will appease diehards and new fans alike.

I think the entire Tiny Desk community has been waiting for this one for a very long time. Thanks guys, for being some of the most inspirational artists I've ever known.
cant the music be enough? why the visual circus.....
@@RobertSlover, believe it or not, art is a multifaceted endeavour.

@Robert Slover, the creatures are from their Get Sun video, shot in their own recording studio. They used the color backgrounds before for a photoshoot. This is their regular space.

so glad Nai was able to beat cancer! so refreshing to hear them back together!
It's amazing to hear that!
i was devastated when i first heard she was diagnosed.. this band is so important to me
woah I didn’t know she had cancer. glad she beat it though :))))
God bless her🙏🏾
Amen !
Nai Palm simply possesses one of the best voices in the world. Absolute chills.
it's also not that easy to sing this well while sitting down. so impressed
Her happiness and positive energy shines through her music. I get a great vibe when I hear her laugh....
aBBasoLyOOtLy 😍🤩😍
I can't describe it any other way than she has brought me to tears by the sheer sonic and harmonic quality of her voice.
100% agreed
I also like how the singer is not visually in the middle. It’s letting the music showcase itself.
shoutout to the background vocalists, they really compliment Nai’s vocals and add an entirely new layer to the songs! i always love hearing them in live performances as well as on Nai’s Needle Paw album.
I thought Needle Paw was 100% Nai?
Hassan DuRant Nope, she’s got her gang of backing vocalists. They tour with Nai and HK in Australia. You can check the credits to be sure.
True they are good. But it's quite particular from them to have that soft low vocals mixing. Sometime instruments are as powerful and loud than vocals
@@gainsbarfromtokyo Ahhhhh cool, I knew she layered herself for the other albums and assumed she did the same for Needle Paw, but was experimenting with formant-shifting to get the background vocals to sound a bit different. Getting completely separate people to sing would definitely be a lot simpler 😂
Hassan DuRant Yeah that’s simpler, I do like the Porter Robinson voice shifting tricks though aha
after YEARS we’ve finally arrived. s/o to the loyalists who have been here since tawk tomahawk
Yooo!! Since Tawk Tomahawk! Yessir
It's been like an odyssey.... i the penelope them the ulysses it's been so long, finally they are home.
I've been waiting 8 years for this 🤩🤩🤩
Boom
Fame is a heavy price, beware for your soul, sell it away and you'll regret the day, stay true and forever life will thank you
BUT THE DRUMMER, EVERYBODY. HE HITS.
drummer is absolutly mind blowing
he is not a drummer, he is a rhythm sorcerer
Let me tell you, I literally went through a phase where I only commented for Hiatus Kaiyote to be on here on every Tiny Desk video😂. So to see the day come that they actually are!! I feel like this a dream come true, it doesn’t even feel real. I am so grateful. Thank you NPR❤️🙏🏽
Likewise friend! I want the same with King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, they need to do one at some point
Thank you! Your hard work has rewarded all of our souls
@@maxgill2594 Yooo so true! Maybe NPR assumes they can't do the quiet vibe but I think that'd be majorly underestimating them. Also not even important with the Tiny Desks From Home!
@@Merlincat007 I could for sure see them doing some acoustic microtonal stuff!
Grassroots campaigners like yourself is where the true power lies.
bass player is an absolute legend
Dude rips.
Absolutely!!
Paul Bender!
Bender!
Paul bender!
SHOUT OUT to the person who said "Why not try these at home"
Seeing how each artist lay out their vibe is a whole mood
The drummer is so unbelievably talented
he is not a drummer, he is a rhythm magician
Yeah, I love the way he uses tuplets.
Nubya Garcia: "I'm going to make the most aesthetic Tiny Desk set ever!"
Hiatus Kaiyote: "hold my kombucha....."
This really tickled me :)
yehhhhhhsssss...!!!!
Everyone takes us somewhere - no competition, just variety of experiences
@@lizricehi5 your absolutely right, loved Nubya Garcia's set just as much as Hiatus kaiyotes, because as U said there so different there incomparable. I was just trying to make a funny.
I chatted to Nubya at the end of a Hiatus gig in London and she told me they were her favourite band.
I swear to u now, hiatus changed my ears. I don’t listen to music the same. thank u for everything; to make music with such clarity yet such freedom just hits so different.
!!!!
Period!
took the words literally right out of my mouth
SAMEEEEE!
SAME!
Yesssss omg. I wish they would’ve done “Stone and Lavender” or “Red Room” too but I’m so impressed by the musicianship of the bandmembers and wow the background singers were amazing too.
I recognize those background singers from some really old videos of hiatus on youtube. Its nice that they're still a part of the group
Stone and lavender 😭🤩🤩
Right I was hoping for red room but it was amazing regardless
I wish they had done lace skull😇
Love the sza pfp!
Nai Palm has one of the most recognisable voices of the current generation
They are just perfect. And Nai is genius, wе all so lucky, that she defeated cancer to continue her art.
nai palm’s voice is one of those things that feel like a new experience each time you encounter it.
the band, the backing vocalists, the stage and their friends made this tiny desk such a pleasure to watch.

Shout out to an Australian band, paying respects to traditional owners, before showing the world how it’s done
yes land recognitions are so important and educational! its not just a empty gesture
i can always count on H Kaiyote for being about that life.
YES !!
@@emilyinfp704 it is an empty gesture
@@Gofaw so many people don't even think about who's land they are occupying, the least you can do to pay respect is acknowledge the history and privileges you are taking as a colonizers on native land not only for yourself but to makes others aware
I remember seeing them live in Stockholm a few years ago…literally felt like mdma.
Best live performance I’ve ever experienced.
Truly my fav band of all time
Same here - magical to see them live. Would love to see them again ...
Killer band. I discovered them 3 years ago, and have been enchanted ever since. Choose Your Weapon is definitely in my favorite albums of all time.
I have a mandrill holding flames tattooed on my leg
Choose your weapon is just something incredible.
I’m ready!!!! My heart stopped for a moment when I saw this pop up on my feed!! Please sing breathing under water!!! Thank you tiny desk for always finding the smaller artist and bigger ones but there is no one better than tiny desk! Please put it on Apple Music!
It's new album time. I would've loved to hear Shaolin Monk Motherfunk, but I'm sure they're kinda over playing songs from that album for the last 6 years
This. I was sad I didn’t see any of the songs I love. Still a dope set though.
@@SuperNompie
All these songs are off their new albums. So many good tracks imo.
(Rose water, Sparkle tape breakup, All the words we don't say)
I'm an old gal of 59 and I adore this band. Their music takes me on such fresh musical adventures every single time. Listening to Mood Valient constantly...just can't get enough. Nai Palm is one of a kind...and the rest of the band and backing singers are so on the groove and so tight. LOVE THIS
Perrin Moss is one of the most gifted players to come along in years. So clean
absolutly, upthere next to Chris Dave atleast
So overdue, but absolutely grateful for this
Nothing is overdue, this came just in time
Well she was pretty sick. They can’t do anything about it.
The mix on this is breath taking, every element is so clear
Mix is good, but musicians' phrasing and timing is exceptional. They mix themselves. I'm a sound engineer.
There's three keyboards in this room, it still sounds so clear
@@arunkarthikma3121 Or like 6! Haha

This is the actual vanguard of pop music and r&B. So good to hear experimentations in other compasses , so many nice rythms. Our ears deserve something different than the average 4/4 pop with "LA LA LA"s and "Uh uh uh"s

Just filthy..
Check his solo projects too, he goes by “Clever Austin”
thanks @@marcusflippen8296 for sharing
Dude. As a 50yr old drummer I've never heard anything like this- in parts he was slowing down and speeding up within certain measures. And somehow it is in time. I thought it was a mistake at first but he repeated it many times. Boggles my mind.
Hiatus Kaiyote is just a breath of fresh hair in a World that forgot musicality and the emotions a voice can make one feel. They're a gift.
NO WAY. NO WAY.
DIDN'T EVEN WATCH IT YET. WRITING AS I WAIT THE AD TO ROLL OUT.
GOD YES. HIATUS ON TINY DESK.
They deserve this, this band is the next big thing, their musicality is out of this world. Merging many genres musical styles

New album and a tiny desk? Feels like I've won the lottery! 😍
The amount going on per musician is bonkers
And yet, none of it is too much. Love this band
you just gotta love Nai Palm's habit of expressing herself in every possible way, through body language, makeup, decoration of the tiny desk with her bandmates and so on... truly inspiring
We are.... SO blessed. To have people with talented souls like this on Earth. This was AMAZING.
the way ''Get Sun'' came in 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥sheeesssshhhh
Yesss that was AMAZING!!
They deserve to be bigger in the R&B and Indie scenes. Love their music.
i would say they’re more soul than r&b
@@ariisayshii They're indie more than anything. I'd prefer to say "psychedelic" or "indie soul".
@@XxQueenChristinaxX if I remember correctly, they're all classically jazz trained. Part of what makes music nerds love them so much. They'd be considered neosoul more than indie. Prog R&B is just a long way of saying neosoul
@@LiftedGamingLoL I can hear the formal influence in their approaches and styling.
I disagree on Prog R&B just being Neosoul tho. Neosoul is quite specific to a time period - around late 90s to mid 00s, after that it began to decline. Alt R&B, contemporary soul, "trap soul", etc. are what came out of it but it really isn't the same. At this point it's rather underground.
@@LiftedGamingLoL And at the end of the day it's all under the umbrella of "R&B/Soul".
A very criminally underrated group
If there’s one group who Tiny Desk is tailor made for, it’s Hiatus Kaiyote
Love seeing the extended band on this, they haven't done this configuration in a whie. I think it really helps them showcase how good their vocal arrangements are and allows Nai to not have to carry all of it.
I've never prayed for a Tiny Desk harder than this one. My favorite band of all time. 🙌🏻
Meeeeeee tooooooooo❤️❤️❤️
Love that both maple glider and hiatus kaiyote recognised the aboriginal land they are on. The native population were treated horrendously.
Freshest band on the planet! Beyond Dope! Super Queen Nai Palm.....Ultimate Rhythm Masters! True Inspiration!
this set reminds me of one of those bands playing at a club in Star Wars or something. Love it, it’s so different & so them ❤️
The first thing I thought of was the cantina band in star wars!
Musically is it. If there is anything about this group. It must be called creativity and extreme talent. Music is save in these capable musicians. Salute from South Africa🙏
This performance hits so much harder after listening to Mood Valient all week on repeat. I remember when this Tiny Desk first came out & I didn't know the new songs but now that I'm caught up this is so amaaaaazzzinnngggg!!!
