Wonderful advice no matter what country you're applying for a job in. You should be interested in the company you're hoping to work for. Bragging about your accomplishments is always a no no. You can let them know what you hope to bring to the table without tooting your own horn. I began a new job in January. During my interview they asked what I was looking for. I replied, "I want to find work I love until I retire or die, whichever comes first. If you hire me and I'm happy here," I looked at the HR man, "You may have to pry my cold, dead hands off of the freezer door!" Without skipping a beat he answered, "Oh no, that's Louise's job!" Knew I wanted to work there immediately. We laughed and the outcome was, I got the job and am very happy. I love my job and poor Louise may have a very unpleasant task to perform some day!

I just wanted to also add something that might come in handy to everyone that was not mentioned in your interview. The strong Norwegian handshake! It was mentioned to me by the recruiter, who was involved in this job search. A firm handshake plays a big part in how you are perceived.

It’s a bad sign, in my experience, if a company expects you to hang out with your coworkers after work or on weekends. I would run NOT WALK. Here in the US such a company culture means that your life belongs to us and you’re never “off” work.
If you make friends with your coworkers and hang out with them AFTER you were hired, that’s different.

    • @YOURWAY2NORWAY
      @YOURWAY2NORWAY  5 лет назад +7

Yes, agree with you. Luckily you are not expected to hang a lot, just for mid years parties and team stuff. But many norwegians are friends with their co-workers, so the culture get influenced by this

Love this, I think my country (Australia) is an interesting mix of both things you guys describe. Boasting is a no no, showing what you can offer the company and your research on the job is most important and being humble and modest. What you can offer them is the main thing & showing you know the company and what they do/stand for & how you'll fit in perfectly to their culture. Making them laugh is a winner too. However, we work way too long and hard, often for no money, unpaid overtime is way too big, a bit like Japan, so saying you'd work 12 hours a day would be loved. It's a crazy country here, way crazier than Norway I think......you two are so much fun!

    Hi, Ronald and Mads,
Loved this video, as it was very enlightening, showing how far employment in the U.S. needs to advance...
Engaging with a boss outside of work is usually viewed negatively, as it interferes with employer/employee relationship.
Some employers here will secretely check on the applicants' social media pages and if they find something they dislike, it can negatively affect the interview outcome. Work hours in the U.S. can be brutal for salaried personnel. 80-100 hours a week (including weekends) is not unusual. To turn down the work can mean loss of job. I've known employers who've expected employees to answer e-mails and calls while on vacations.
Speaking of which, you two should do a grand tour of the U.S. Your subscribers would most likely house you, and you could introduce yourself to all of our foods, home made and otherwise!
Keep the videos coming. We need more screen time for Mads. Your videos have certainly entertained us, to the extreme, even on more serious topics. Ronald's explanations are informative and hilarious. When will you put out a feature length film?
    We love you two!

In Canada during the olden days, a person could be hired on the spot based solely upon first impressions and résumé. Nowadays it is a 2 or 3 interview process with one or 2 individuals doing the asking. To be honest, I am trained with 30+ years experience in the restaurant & hospitality industry and i f I am seeking a job it means that I NEED it Now, and not 2 weeks from now! In the U.S., it doesn't hurt to be over-dressed, especially when you work with the public. This doesn't include jobs like waiting tables, construction work, cook, etc.
Even jobs that doesn't pay much may require a jacket or a suit.

Thank you for this. I'm currently trying to apply for jobs in Norway. So a brilliant video. Here in the UK I work for the HMG (Her Majesties Government). I also am an interviewer. We have a panel of three and interviews are very formal and structured. All questions are competence based and you have to answer them demonstrating what you have done in the situation we have asked about. All three will ask questions and the chair (me) will cover off anything missed we may also delve deeper if we are interested or to help you answer better 👍. So jobs you will also have to sit an assessment centre, so a presentation of a subject you get 15 mins before hand, interview on that, a written of maths test. Like writing a paper of building a spreadsheet to solve a problem. Then another formal interview and sometimes a group exercise. How the hell I got a job and to were I am today I'll never know. Fingers crossed I can get a job in Norway 🤔

I am a retired engineer in America. During the 70's and 80's the way you got a job was either 1) Know somebody on the inside or 2) Send your resume to Human Relations (along with thousands of other resumes). 1) was a sure thing while 2) was a long shot. For 1) the manager of the person you knew on the inside would interview you and if your insider was well respected you got hired. For 2) you would be contacted if a hiring manager liked your resume. Also, male engineers wore ties until the mid 80's and then suddenly NOBODY wore a tie except the old guys. It quickly morphed from "Hawaiian Shirt Friday" to "whatever" 5 days a week. Exceptions were you still wore a tie to job interviews or if giving a presentation to non-company personnel. By the 2000's knowing somebody on the inside was less of a sure thing as you were no longer interviewed by a single person but by a "team" similar to what you have described. Back in the 80's one manager who hired me asked me if I was a smoker. I told him I thought smoking was awful, he smiled, and hired me. 20 years later he could have been fired for asking a question like that. I have no problem with it but I am not PC. By 2000 companies had websites where they list what they are looking for and you could apply online. A lot easier than mail or physically dropping off your resume.

People are way happier because of it, everything is at slower pace. Working from 8 am to 7 pm.. what?? Nei nei! 😂 There’s so much more work offers in Norway, the Netherlands is overpopulated and getting a job is hard and you’ll need to brag your way into even getting an interview, though in Norway you’ll need the language in most cases, there’s a lot more question for employees in many professions. Loved this, pretty funny! In the southwestern US (New Mexico, where I live, but also Arizona and California) the level of formality in dress is generally "casual business" unless you're going for upper-level business or management which would be suits and a tie or a nice dress for women. Generally there's also only one interviewer and directly in charge of the position you're applying for. You'll be asked about general experiences you've had, anything that stands out on your resume, and almost always they'll ask silly things like, "what's your greatest weakness?" (and you're meant to say something vaguely not that bad while turning it around into a positive). In upper management and business, they want to know how good you are at schmoozing and if you're a team player (generally, will you work late without being paid overtime, or help people with things outside your main job description).

Great video. I learned something more about Norwegian culture. Thank you again. Oh and I can’t believe anyone would expect to get a job in another country without speaking at least a high intermediate level of the language.
I would like to say I’ve had panel interviews and it’s kind of common sense to make eye contact and speak to each person in the group equally. They are there for a reason. And someone might be very quiet and not ask you any questions so you ignore him/her and then when you leave they won’t like you or have positive things to say about you. You should treat each person equally and respectfully. And you should make complete eye contact and listen quietly when someone else is speaking. Just my cross cultural thoughts. 🙂 I like that Norway hires mice. Saves a lot on salaries and overhead. Short lifespan and no whining about vacations. 👍🏼

Hei Ronald and Mads. This is great- so funny, I love the 'workplace' setting and love Rob in 'casual clothes' lol! Things have changed, I remember an interview in Oslo in the early 1980's, as I shook the interviewer's hand he clicked his heels together, you would never see Norwegian male do that now! Very old fashioned. In the U.K. you are generally expected to wear a business suit and are often quite formal. The difference here is that you are expected to sell yourself. A long running joke is that you may be asked 'Where do you see yourself in ten years?' Ha!

Ronald and Mads, Norway sounds and looks like a nice place to live. It's almost like the government and employers are aware a proper work/life balance makes for a more productive and happier worker! The gov't. and employers here in the US don't care about happy productive workers, really. Every once in a while we'll hear about a company that cares about it's workers, but it's rare! P.S. As a programmer for most of my life, I've had an opportunity to interview many candidates. One thing I would always do, is to ask the candidate an obscure technical question they were unlikely to know. My fellow employees never understood why I did it, but the reason wasn't because I expected the correct answer, it was to see if the person was honest enough to simply say "I don't know" or if there would try to bs or invent an answer when they clearly had no idea. Is this a technique that might be used in Norway?

Interviews are very similar here, though the way to dress will be different depending on the job and the region you live in. Here in California near San Francisco, it's a very casual culture, so it's not so necessary to get dressed up for most interviews.
I agree that the first meeting is definitely about chemistry!

In the US I always had job interviews with one person at a time in the room with me, though in might have to talk to as many as three people, sequentially. Often between interviews they made me wait in a waiting room, where other people would pass by and peek in. I'm naturally friendly, so I would smile at them, and I always got the job. Interestingly the one job I didn't get was when I let someone pass without smiling at them -- I must have been tired or something that day. So yes, while US companies certainly want someone competent, they also want someone who will get along with others.

Very truthful advice, you have to acknowledge all the people in the room, it's like that in the USA too, don't ignore any of the people, give them all equal attention. Except for the work life balance, that doesn't exist in the USA!

Thank God I nearly always worked for myself... I did have one job interview... the Boss, who was a tall man, just took one look at my four & a half foot height and decided (mentally) I would be useless... I was smart and offered to work for two weeks trial, for FREE & he agreed... In the end he was blown away with my skills and hired me full-time with a raise immediately... When I left after three years to travel to Europe for an undetermined time (when I went to Norway)... he paid me a huge bonus to be sure I would come back to work for him again. I came back nine years later and he immediately offered me a big amount of money to work for him again...

Awesome video :) Here in NZ is pretty much the same. If you apply for a technical role, people would expect you to come in t-shirt and jean. If you come in a suit, then people would tend to think that your technical skill is not that good and you are trying to hide your weakness behind your suit. Chemistry is definitely very important and to get that probably the candidate would need to understand the local culture. A little bit of humor and smile/laugh won't hurt as well here. Not sure if humor can be accepted in Scandinavian countries, since the people tend to look very serious :)

We dress up in the U.S. for job interviews. How much depends on where you are applying. We send a resume so they know what you are qualified for. If they weren't interested they wouldn't have called for an interview. I agree you shouldn't brag. I personally find bragging distasteful. Your resume tells them about your qualifications. You should be interested in learning about the company. Great advice. Love y'all too.

My experience in the US has been a 30 minute "screening" phone call by the recruiter or HR to see if you have the skills and their salary request is in alignment with their budget. If you pass the screener, you get an hour with the potential manager over Skype. If you pass that, you get 2-4 hours in person with 3-4 people and you have to present examples of your work like they were potential clients. Then you wait for the call. Your only follow up is a thank you email to each person. If you get an offer, you can negotiate salary.
You do dress casual. Nice slacks and blouse or button down shirt. Tell them how you feel you can fit with the team and organization. Research the people who are interviewing them and talk about what you have in common. Tell them how you can hit the ground running because you have experience doing the job responsibilities. No one has ever asked about my hobbies until after I get the job.
You only talk about money with the recruiter/HR. NEVER with the manager or other people who interview you. If HR is in the interview, you only talk about money when it's just the two of you.
