That moment was the best. I am glad he shared his opinion, because I agree. If you ban content, people are bound to find worse content than the content that was banned. You cannot censor the entire internet, nor can you censor human interactions.
I very much agree with what Eugene said here at this point. I too, hope "Karen is happy". Lol. Parents need to be more responsible for what their kids are watching and it's not on the content or creators to do so on a free platform.

I laughed out loud so hard and loud at this line, yes when I have kids my wife and I will teach them. I saw all kinds of content as a kid because the laws and censors do not work, but I knew what was expected and what I wasn't supposed to be watching (even if I still watched it) based on my parents' standards. I loved how well Susan kept a straight face through this bit, even seemed a bit uncomfortable, liked the part where she was clearly laughing at him (not in a bad way).

I feel like she didn't actually explain *why* so many LGBTQ creators get demonetized, she basically just said "we do care"
helleswahn and it’s a consistently proven fact that certain lgbtq terms/tags do get flagged. Like acknowledge it susan whether it’s intentional or not. Dodging the question only makes it look more suspicious.
I also noticed as he brought the question up, the way she batted her eyes made me feel like she was saying "Oh here we go again" In her head.
She said it’s key words taught to the machines by humans I know sex is a key word so when they say same sex marriage or asexual etc I see them bleeping sex
The interesting thing is that she denys that there is a bias in mashine leading, but the bias can come directly from the data. She still thinks that "mashine learning" is a totally objective system... Which is not true. I like that Eugene pointed out that there are studies which show that RUclips is shit towards LGBTQ+ creators.
I thought it was crazy too because after dancing around the issue at hand about the demonetization, she goes on to talk about how RUclips cares about the LGBTQ community. But, it’s an obvious after-thought that was filmed at a later time (perhaps after consulting with legal/PR) based on her hair and scarf position, then going back to normal in the next shot.

CEO: We have a lunch policy that is very important to us, our goal is to keep enforcing this policy so to protect the humans.
I agree with Eugene. You cannot always expect to shelter children from adult content. Yes, basic regulations are necessary but parents must also be responsible. You can't always blame RUclips for its "mature" content.
The more adults try to shelter children from all things not suitable for them, the more likely the children are going to get their hands in them.

@@razorgiraffe its not the parents, its the children themselves that are the problem. They will try to get into things that are not for them just because they can and they are hella resourceful at it.
Adlyne Hyun yes this true. Although I don’t think parents should monitor their kids 24/7 just inform them of websites and get a basic lesson on websites to not be at. And maybe sometimes look at your child monitor and if they are watching something they don’t approve. Don’t blame the creator....just tell your kid not to watch them in stern voice and if they repeat this just keep doing it or even punish them. Because creators are here to just entertain your little kid but here to entertain a variety of people.

Yeah I am an education major and the first thing I was taught was about unintentional bias. So she is just trying to save face there.
I completely agree, but I do have to ask, can an AI learn to have subconscious bias?
@@peachypatrick The AI can only learn from the information it gains from people. So, if it is learning from people with a bias, let's say, people constantly flagging videos that feature LGBTQ creators, the machine will learn that those videos are inappropriate. So in that sense, yes it can form a "bias". Which is why her answer is stupid. You can't say that a learning machine can't have bias when it takes in information from people. A computer can't have bias, but an AI that is capable of changing its own behavior. Also the idea that a human team will fix the "mistakes" that the AI makes is insane. They could never staff that many people in order to get it right, plus the staff that does see videos have their own inherent bias, which again, makes the AI more biased. Sorry for ranting lol.
Patrick !!! AI machine will do exactly what it is told to by the code humans give it. So if it is being told something with a bias in (even if it is unconsciously done) then it will carry out that bias. Meaning the AI machine itself cannot have unconscious bias, but it can be carrying out bias actions if given an unconsciously bias code by humans.

It isn't, but it is their job to remove videos that are harmful BEFORE Lawsuits.
Yes but it is definitely their job to make algorithms that predators and malicious creators can't use to take advantage of children and to ensure they remove content that violates the community guidelines. There's channels that take advantage of the reccomended videos algorithm so that a child watching peppa pig can get reccomended a similar cartoonish looking video that contains graphic scenes of gore or other traumatizing content meant to harm these children. Age restricted videos can't even be watched by minors so that's not even an issue, its that they don't take down harmful content while demonizing things that aren't even explicit, such as lgbt content.

It's ridiculous that creators have to mark the videos as "for kids" or "Not for kids". The FTC allows a third classification, which is for "All ages", and RUclips is actively ignoring that.

@@anisa3277 Adding a general audience option would make it much less likely that an animation video or a gaming video marked as adult content doesn't get dinged by the FTC. That way COPPA can go cop a feel of the real violators of the policy.
Pistols O'Brien I understood what you meant. I was questioning how it's possible to do it. Seeing as they're trying to separate kids from adults since the ads and stuff to do with adults is bad for the innocence of the masses. I'm not going to pretend to understand the divide RUclips is making for content creators bc it hurts what little brain I have. But given that RUclips is a clear mess, how will they cope adding a general category where they will have to add some content creators to both kids and adults? Whilst having some content creators purely for kids or purely for adults? Or an I just over thinking this, since RUclips can't get simple right?
Pistols O'Brien adding to my last comment. I put down purely for kids channel's and content, bc of some family channels having problems with supposed paedophilia. Since I'm assuming that the various rules and laws apply both to kids watching videos and to kids producing content on the platform.
@@anisa3277 the thing is, general audience is accounted for in COPPA. For some reason RUclips is having creators pick between two options, where the third option would solve most of the issues. If you're in the partner program (I'm not, I'm just saying), you shouldn't have to pick between adults only and potentially have the FTC fine you, or kids content and receive limited ads.

I don’t want to throw too much shade here, I’m sure her job is EXTREMELY difficult and there are a lot of things to handle/remember. But the ‘statement’ about RUclips caring about LGBTQ perspective is obviously edited in. 😤 Her scarf is in a completely different position between that whole section. Was her PR person listening to the interview and went ‘oh right, we have to say something nice about LGBTQ’?? Just seems inauthentic. 😕

Just because you are motivated by money doesn't mean everyone is. She has screw-you amount of money that she can do whatever she wants for the rest of her and her children's life. Just maaaybe there's other things going on. It's so sad that the first thing you can thing of is money so maybe it IS all about the money,... for you that is.
But one major and almost most important reason RUclips gets complaints is because creators notice a negative flux in income income based on RUclips's decisions on their channel or videos. RUclips and the creators treat this platform as a business
@@anslemroland9630 That doesn't necessarily means that Susan just cares about the money. There are many people that work under youtube and to say it's all about the money is incorrect. Money is certainly a talking point but so is freedom of speech, safety and security. A big issue is that the problem so big and complex. It's pretty annoying when people treat these things like it's plain and simple.

This is why people are upset Susan. Just say it, and if it's too complicated for the average person there are methods of understanding it. Be directs and be clear and you will get compliance. Be vague and you will get backlash. Exactly what you're getting now
Maybe because youtube has competitors that would want any bit of info they can get??? or maybe because it would take too much time to explain the algorithm and that she's a busy person?? Don't tell me you've never heard someone say it's complicated.
One thing not a lot of people consider is that machine learning is inherently difficult to unravel and finding out how it reaches an outcome is near impossible. These algorithms are trained by being fed millions of examples and answers and they essentially adjust the mathematical formula behind them until it matches the examples they are given. This makes introducing bias a huge issue because it can then be difficult to determine how an algorithm is coming to a solution and where it picked up on the bias.
@@Palamdrone She's the CEO of a multi billion dollar company, she has thousands who work for her. Nobody could explain the algorithm? Nobody could type up a quick statement explaining things further? This was a planned interview, it's not like it was sprung on her and RUclips out of nowhere and they had to scramble to get statements together. I'm not saying she should have spewed it out right there, but have some answers. She or perhaps the previous CEO had to approve of the algorithm, they have to have at least some idea as to what it is and how it works. Also, who competes with RUclips? Traditional Media? Facebook? TikTok? No. There is no current other form of media that has such a massive successful influence in the form of video entertainment. There just isn't. Perhaps in the future, but wouldn't full transparency keep them going longer? If longevity is what you're going for then you want people to stick around and want to create great content on this platform. There might come a day where another platform comes around and RUclips dies, and the people choosing between staying and leaving think "Hmm, should I stay on RUclips? Well they treat their creators like shit, enable know paedophiles and perverts and I'm not even sure if my next video could be monitised since some robot decides whether my content is friendly enough. Oh! And I forgot the bogus copyright abusers who copy strike my content if a snippet of one of their videos was used in mine, even if the video if 2 hours long and the clip was 5 seconds. And even if I dodget ownership back they receive no penaltyfor constant harrassment. Yeah I think I'm going to switch platforms." Make things clear, have a department of your company dedicated to making sure guidelines are clear and consistent. Don't dodge questions, it's not going to get you anywhere. Hope that clarifies for ya bud.
@@bpfuels They designed the technology, yes machine learning works to teach itself however if the algorithm is consistently striking against content such as the LGBT community, there are ways of fixing that bias and not allowing the system to continue to hurt those creators. When the system was first started it's not like you can't tweak it. Just like any machinery, you make adjustments where its needed to continue to improve the results. Do you think we'd have the cars we do now if we just decided that in the 60s the cars we manufactured were good enough and stopped working on improving? Its unrealistic to have AI teach itself everything. Make improvements where the technology is lacking.
First of all plenty of people working for her COULD have explained the algorithm but they could also decide that it not appropriate or not worth the time to go into detail.
Plenty of company compete with youtube just that their not successful in doing so. Those are two different matters. They have video infrastructure teams and many other teams equivalent to youtube in goals and expertise. Poaching of talent happen very aggressively and tech get stolen all the time.
You speak as though you know how to fix all this problem so well so by all mean please apply for a position at youtube and fix this for everyone.

I'm 15 minutes in and she's barely answering questions. I hear the same words over and over again which is fine because it's her job to answer questions posed to her. It's frustrating however that there's a lot of just filled words not really giving an answer. We get that RUclips is a business and it makes money from advertising. That means that if you don't make videos that appeal to advertisers, you won't get paid. That's fine.
I'm actually really miffed about her "Creators on the Rise" bit. Yeah sure, RUclips has a great lottery spotlight system, once you're already monetizable and have 5-digit followings. You know what would be really helpful? Put a line of code into that suggestions feed that requires one of the 5 top videos in the "what to watch next" column comes from a channel with less than 5 figures. Less than 4 would be even better. The actual small creators. I've been uploading for 1.5 years and I'm only at 635, yet half the time when a new subscriber leaves a comment it's "wow, why don't you have more subs?" "wow, why isn't this shown off more?" I'm sitting here like that's what I'd like to know! I've got my title, description, tags, thumbnails, etc. all worked over. I've got an edited caption file. I post about every new video on all my social media platforms. I heart and reply to every new comment. I collaborate. If I'm doing all these things AND the audience I do have thinks my channel should be bigger, why isn't it? This is why small/new creators feel like there's nothing in place for us.
Also, who else hates it when RUclips itself calls someone with 50k subs a "small" creator? If that's small, what am I? Microscopic?
this all just puts into perspective how small we are compared to the people with money and power. they continue thriving off of this caste system where they tell the people at the bottom that "everyone has a chance at making it to the top" but that's simply not true. yet, people still buy into it and keep working and getting nowhere. that's because they (unintentionally/possibly intentionally) keep things out of reach by making policy changes and putting up barriers for people to have to work with. my belief is that youtube is part of the oligarchic reign over our capitalist society which means their biggest concern is making money. they're a business that wants to keep growing. they want their employees (content creators) to be generating enough revenue to sustain and advance their technology. the way to generate revenue is through ads and video monetization and views etc. idk if what I'm saying is making any sense at this point, but, I truly dont believe youtube is actively trying to support small creators like they claim.
@@ardenleewilson8766 It made perfect sense. Don't loose your head over this. This is just one platform doing businesstricks while playing five finger filet with their content creators. It has switched in 2014 circa, when people started to regularely upload. With that the pace took off, but also the backlash had no chance to set in, cause there were no reflection breaks. And the faster the pace, the bigger the revenue. It's amazon, just for creative work, which does not work, since then it looses all it's creativity, organic flow and appealing factors. We are beginning to step into the endphase of wave one RUclips. I hope you liked it this far, from now one the freak show will just get bigger and bigger.
well i do think it can be hard to get smaller creators on the rise, there are so many large youtubers that the general following goes towards them, youtube cant help what people choose, as of right now their trying their best, we just need to be patient and supportive, helpful, give postive feedback. if these issues are so awful to everybody, why not just leave the website?
Even if you get to 10k, 30k, 100k or even 1M subscribers, you still won't get views a lot of the time because RUclips will literally delete you from those subscribers pages. Your subscribers are nothing. There are channels with a million subs who get 2,000 views per video. The only thing that gives views is the algorithm, which measures only by clickbait, keywords and watchtime, favoring exploit, low effort garbage like ASMR, and other than that, works only through total randomness or what RUclips tells it to favor, which is late-night talk shows and promoted content ONLY. You have no chance in hell.
I think there is also a lot to be said for understanding how the things are promoted, and statistics to increase your engagement, for instance with your channel I took the time to watch your introduction video, and one of your recent videos, and while I loved the content of the video, things such as design of channel art (icon and banner, and thumbnails) and microphone quality are things that could if worked upon could impact your engagement significantly. Additionally, the amount you personally promote videos and whether you work with other creators, even small ones, should impact your growth a lot!! Like with any business vying for essentially customers (viewers) what you invest in terms of quality will impact success. This isn't intended to insult but rather as constructive criticism to help you, as you seem frustrated with engagement.
He should ask her why Onision is allowed to have a RUclips channel.

Facts
So here’s the thing - they’re both right. Machine learning algorithms can only learn from the data you feed them. Thus, if RUclips feeds clean data that isn’t homophobic, then theoretically there should be no problems. But Eugene is right that it must come from somewhere because there are problems - that somewhere is humans ourselves. There’s a great book, Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code by Ruha Benjamin, that talks about this in more depth. Actually really interesting to read from the diversity and anti-racism perspective!
LGBTQ+ content gets flagged by algorithm, uploader files appeal, gets manually reviewed by YT staff, but most YT staff is in much poorer countries where wages are cheap and people aren't as progressive. Staff denies appeal, algorithm learns that LGBTQ+ is indeed troublesome. And the cycle continues. Susan knows this.

At this scale that could mean tens of thousands of video be incorrectly flagged. It's a very difficult problem because you don't want to overfit that data as well.

Bruh when she said that their machine learning program can only learn “what they teach it” even though it’s being exposed to millions of hours of content every day.... my little comp sci major heart sunk. She either doesn’t understand how it works (unlikely, she is very intelligent and has been involved with RUclips and google for a long time) or she is deliberately misleading the listeners. Many, many AI programs have been found to have created their own biases. Yes, it only learns what its shown, but when it’s being shown MILLIONS of hours of content, it’s ridiculous to act like that’s all being guided by humans. The subtext of what she's saying is that youtube policy determines what can be learned because it determines what content, what kinds of content, what shape the content can come in etc. of videos used to learn. So, for example, if youtube determines no videos w/ children can be uploaded; it's defacto dictating learning (we would be teaching it about adults and not children intentionally).
Maybe because people are quick to take arms to every little thing she says or doesn't say. e.g. you have no clue about the topology of their network nor to what extent are they training on their model or the metadata being used. Additionally the context of this video is non technical so I'm sure she's very sad about your poor ole comp sci heart.

She definitely was using a deflective tactic while “answering” his questions. Instead of answering the question head on, she started off my trying to relate to content creators, then told him what he wanted to hear without definitely giving him an answer or bold-face lying.
It wouldn't have been disrespectful, it would've been righteous... But it would've probably been against the rules of whatever contract they signed in order to interview her, and it ultimately would have also led to negative repercussions for the Try Guys channel, so of course he didn't say what was really on his mind.

What good would it do?
Chris Hansen has very valid points but you want someone who can conduct the interview from a (fairly) neutral perspective. As important as it is to address things, no one can actually answer questions effectively by being bombarded with a bunch of problems
She probably would rather not have chris hansen interview her because he has no stake in the youtube game really. He could move his platform anywhere and be ok cause his fame didnt come from youtube. I have a ton of respect for Eugenes work however compared to chris hansen, his whole livelyhood is in youtube and cant risk loosing it. Also chris hansen is a senior journalist that knows how to ask the right questions and wont let it go. He gets to the answer he wants with out letting people give the run around like she did in this video. This was a smart move on her end because she wouldnt have come out as damage free as with Chris

Susan, ever since you became the CEO in 2014, the platform has gone down hill. You need to either step down and give the job to someone who understands, or actually listen to the creators and users, *not* data charts and graphs.
Double ads suck, but people can deal, however the favoritism towards certain channels, mass demonization, blacklisting, a copyright system that is easily abused, and the lack of care about the actual creators are just the tip of the iceberg if what's wrong with the platform.
It's not RUclips anymore, it's a mess of guidelines left intentionally vague and an algorithm that is against you unless you start out with at least a million subscribers.
