  • Installing modern ceiling lights will make your house look way better. This tutorial will show you how to change out old ceiling lights with new modern ones. And you'll do it without getting shocked or dropping the light on your head!! Both of which have happened to me (in the not too distant past).
** Electrical work is dangerous. So please turn off the electricity to your lights at the circuit breaker or fuse box before doing anything else. You should also use a voltage detector to check that the wires in the light's junction box are not live or have electricity running through them. Voltage detectors, in my humble opinion, should be in everyone's tool box. They are less than $20 and can save your life. Once you're sure the electricity is off you can start your project. **
Check out my video for all the details and a step-y-step guide.

Awesome video! So many videos showing, "connect black to black. connect white to white" YAWN. Finally a video that shows how to deal with a RED wire! Oh, and my new light fixture manufacturer's written instructions weren't helpful either :-( But then, JEFF TO THE RESCUE! Thanks so much!

Excellent Illustration of Steps provided during the Video . I have attempted all various techniques and failed at, Watched too many different You tube Videos of Installing Ceiling Light Fixture and still Failed UNTIL I watched your Video and came thru a Eureka moment. My Ceiling Power Outlet is similar to the one you have shared in this video and tears of Joy are flowing thru my eyes at the moment after understanding what I should have done correctly to get the New Ceiling Light Fixture to work with my Electrical Outlet in the ceiling. I was connecting 2 Black Wires with the Red Hot wire and the Switch ON/OFF was not working. Watching your video I learned that the 2 Black wires should be simply capped OFF and returned back into the Electrical Outlet. Thank you so much for Sharing .

Hi Jeff, I would like to install recessed lighting. I bought a gizmo to cut the holes, but would I need an electrician to do the wiring? There is no overhead lighting in that living room, so I assume there is no wiring in the ceiling, although there are electrical outlets on the walls. Thanks!

    • @HomeRepairTutor

depends on your comfort level with wiring. If you're not comfortable and worried about safety I'd recommend getting a licensed electrician to do the work...worth the peace of mind.

9:13 put the safety screw not too tight. i had this kind of lamp, had its glass fall on the floor, break apart. the safety screw should be turned tightly, as tight as possible. thankfully the floor was carpet so the fall of the glass didn't break the floor
